Sony Pictures (Taiwan) has confirmed that Jay Chou will be cast as Bruce Lee's Kato in "Green Hornet". Yesterday, many American movie magazines such as "Hollywood Reporter" and "Variety" had reported this story. French director, Michel Gondry who replaced Stephen Chow with Jay praised, "Jay is incredibly unique and charming and fights like a wild dog!". However, American netizens are displeased with Jay acting as Kato, posted messages to bombard and sarcastically said "Who is he?"
Michel Gondry revealed, when Jay Chou auditioned for "Green Hornet" not long ago, he and Seth Rogen (Green Hornet) had such great chemistry and he did well. Cast as his idol, Bruce Lee's Kato role, Jay is very excited, "It is an overwhelming experience to take on a role made famous by Bruce Lee. I won't try to be Bruce Lee's Kato -- I will try to bring my own interpretation to the part. Of course, it is a dream role, and I am looking forward to the challenge."
American netizens don't know who Jay Chou is
Although with the director's support, the American netizens are extremely displeased with Jay acting as Kato and posted messages to bombard him. One netizen even left a message saying "Who is he?" pointing out that he lacks popularity. Another netizen thinks that Jay is not suitable for the role of Kato, and sarcastically stated 4 points; not charming, no acting skills, zero attractiveness and lousy command of English. Another netizen also mentioned, "Jay Chou! Are you serious? Who approved this cast? If Bruce Lee is still alive, i bet he will ask the same question." Someone even suggested that they should look for someone with a good command of English like Lee Hom or Donnie Yen, or even the pro fighting Thai action star, Tony Jaa is more suitable for this role than Jay.
Diaz "falling in love" with Jay
As we found out, the movie "Green Hornet" has a very impressive cast line-up, with Oscar winner Nicholas Cage and sexy Hollywood star, Cameron Diaz involved. In the movie, Cage will be acting as the triad boss, Mr X while Diaz will be the Green Hornet's secretary, Lenore Case who is attracted to Kato. In the Bruce Lee version of The Green Hornet, Lenore Case is one of the few who knows of Green Hornet and Kato's secret identity. Diaz in this upcoming version, is a crime thriller fanatic and even managed to gather evidence of her husband's extramarital affair and falling in love with Kato afterwhich.

The Green Hornet series premiered as a radio program in 1936. In 1940, the Green Hornet comic series began and it was produced as a movie in the same year. It was only made famous by the television series in 1966 in which the low-profile Bruce Lee left a deep impression and even led the Kung Fu craze in America, however it was cancelled after only one season.

it should be interesting seeing Cameron Diaz chasing after Jay...

LMAO...this article is so funny! especially the part about :

i'm not necessarily sure that fighting like a wild dog is something to be proud of ...it sounds so savage and all (and it totally cracked me up because in my imagination, a wild dog and charming are on opposite sides of the scale )

OMG, I thought Cameron was going to be Seth Rogan's love interest, not Kato. LOL, I hope Jay's suitably prepared for this role. Of course I'm rooting for him, but I worry about his level of English skills. As for the rest of the critiscm, clearly, these people know nothing about Jay! I'll admit that I admire his skills as a singer more than an actor, but I thought he was really great in both Secret and especially Curse.

I thought about the English, too. I have a feeling Jay has been taking lessons here and there.
It's frustrating to hear about those netizens who bashed Jay for being an unknown. Well, of course they don't know who Jay is. They're not exposed to his work like someone who lives in Asia where Jay's heavily active in the media. It doesn't even make sense to criticize someone so harshly just for being a newbie to the U.S. movie scene. After all, even A-listers like Tom Hanks had to get there start somewhere...
And about the casting choice... If Jay and Seth had screen-quality chemistry like the director said, then I really couldn't argue with the director's choice. I'm definitely rooting for Jay on this one.

Re: [10/08/09] Jay as Bruce Lee's successor, French director "YES", netizens "NO"
when i first read this, i was super upset.. but i mean, i guess i can understand because nobody in the U.S. knows jay. I mean, people who would be into Green Hornet.. so naturally, if you were really into some comic (or whatever it is), and some unknown SINGER was picked to play one of the main characters...perhaps you would be upset too. of course i will see the movie for jay no matter what, but i will be honest..acting and martial arts are not really his forte. i guess i'm biased because i have a bit of martial arts background, but i would honestly say that someone else might be more appropriate for the role (i do not believe stephen chow is one of these people). well, whatever... i'm sure jay will still be cast, and he will win over audiences, if not for his martial arts..his charisma ;)

Re: [10/08/09] Jay as Bruce Lee's successor, French director "YES", netizens "NO"
omg, the comments that the netizens gave was so harsh! And the comment that jay fights like a "wild dog" is pretty insulting. It sounds like they're looking down on him. If they don't know anything about jay, then they shouldn't insult him like that. well, like you guys said, us fans are rooting for jay.. :)
