Places to go in Hong Kong

Hey there! I know there's another topic for HK peeps, but that one is almost up to 500 posts, so I decided to open a new one, with another HK topic. So in this topic I would like to aks people living in HK, or people who have been there to give some places worth visiting in Hong Kong. Sight seeing, restaurants, and most important: shops, are all welcome. My reason for this topic? I'm going to HK this summer! (yeah, I know it's humid and hot in summer, but can only go in summer for four weeks). So, do you know any good places? Let's discuss them here! Pls be more specific than: 'some restaurant in the south'

I'll start

I've been to HK three years before, also in summer. I remember going to a nice Sushi restaurant in Kowloon, if I'm correct, called Katiga (Japanese Food Shop). This year, I'll definitely go eat some more sushi, cause I heard it's not expensive.

I'm thinking of going to HK next year, i want my hotel to be located in the middle of the shopping complexes like when i walk out of the hotel lobby, i'd be expecting shops. So maybe stay around harbour city shopping complex but heard it's all branded stores in there. I don't mind cos i love them stores but going into them once is enough, not a place where i'd be shopping everyday. Is Nathan Rd a long strip of shops?

Hey! Does anyone know anything about the Book Fair or Fashion Week Fair in Hong Kong? I know they will held when I'm in HK, but I was wondering if anyone has ever been there, or can tell me more about it, like what you can do there, whether buying things there are cheaper etc. These are the links I found, but they're not really informative.

hrmm, i heard the cameras in Hk is quite cheap ... anyone can give me a price of a 3.2 megapixel camera price in HK

but how about tips on where to eat on a "budget"

ive heard that even Mcdonalds and Pizza hut is quite expensive in HK...

lunch meals and dinner and oh how about that Jumbo restaurant? they serve dimsum there right? where do you get the best dimsum in HK...i saw national geographic presentation on dimsum about a couple of months ago...i forgot the restaurant...but they did mention the Jumbo restaurant...

tips on where 2 eat on budget?? yum char in hk is already a bargain i think compared 2 yum char in nz... there r a lot more choices and they always hav specials... well in hk u can always wait 2 eat lunch after 2pm/2:30pm coz dats when they hav afternoon tea specials and its often quite cheap virtually everywhere...mayb coz i liv in nz and everything is SO expensive (food, housing, clothes, electronics) i find all things in HK really cheap =). there r alot of places that serve good dimsum... chinese restuarants in 4 or 5 star hotels is a good choice e.g. Dynasty---but of course good quality food cums wif a price.

The best thing about HK is that you can eat something like won ton noodles for $10 or eat at a fancy restaurant, the choice is endless. There is such a wide variety of food to choose from, I think Hk has the most restaurants/eating places per square foot than any other place, so you definitely won't starve! You'll certainly find something to suit your budget. McDonalds expensive?! i've never heard of that in HK! i don't find it expensive, not that i go there much, but i guess it depends where you come from.

I think the Jumbo Floating Restaurant is mentioned because it's been around for such a long time, 25 years, so it attracts a lot of tourists (you may find many tour groups visiting) and i guess if you haven't been before it'd be nice. I remember going as a child and it's a unique dining experience, it's a brightly lit float and apparently has live bands from weds to sat. For dim sum i would recommend the Tao Heung group restaurants which my dad likes and believe me, he is a picky eater! You have to order by ticking a list of dim sum menu in chinese, but you can ask for an english menu and match the numbers instead! Nowadays, this is how dim sum is ordered, but in the more traditional restaurants, ladies push around carts and shout out what they have or if you don't understand, you an always go over and lift up the bamboo lids to see for yourself, it'll be fun! Most restaurants offer dim sum at cheaper prices after the mad morning and lunch rush.

If you like 'Italian' food and you're not too picky whether it's authentic or not, then i'd suggest Fat Angelo's. It's value for money; you get a salad and hot bread with the meals and unlimited soft drink refills. There are 2 portion sizes; not so big and big! they are designed for sharing so remember to bring friends! http://www.fatangelos.com/ Personally, i've always enjoyed my meals there.

Other budget places are probably the local cha chan tengs or dai pai dongs (which are sadly, slowly disappearing), only problem is that you have to know chinese as the majority of menus and specials are in chinese and the staff don't speak much if any english. However, you can always look around you and see what everyone else has ordered and just point!
