View Full Version : Anyone like J-Rock?

Anyone here into J-Rock? It can be any form of Japanese rock -- whether it be Dir en grey (who I personally can not stand, but that's besides the point), X-Japan, Luna Sea (<3!!), Pierrot, or any other J-rock band.

I like j-rock quite a bit. At least, I did. Until L'arc started releasing songs like Killing me (much love to the remake of Round and Round though) and Gackt decided to do a ballads album as did Glay. Now, I'm just kind of depressed and trying to amuse myself by listening to AKFG and Merry.

Merry? XD; That means you're into like, MUCC and all that too, huh?

I'm surprised you have issues with Gackt & ballads when you listen to Jay! XD; He's like... well, yeah. >_> I'd put him up there on the same level of Gackt. Just with a twist of R&B and rap. XD;;;;

Me. I only have 3 things I'm interested in now these days: Sugizo, The FLARE, and Luna Sea.

Sad, considering the fact that the list used to incorporate Gackt, Dir en grey (UGH >_>), Miyavi (X___X), Pierrot, machine, etc. etc.

Whee XD So there are actually J-Rock lovers in J-C.net huh? Awesome! I've been a big fan of j-rock for a while now :) And my tastes are quite varied too ^_^; From Gackt (which is more popish rock, if you think about it) to L'arc to Deg to Meri to Kagraa... ::list goes on and on and on::

The group that I'm incredibly in love with has to be D'espairsRay though XD I'm eagerly awaiting their first full album (rumored to be release in February? -- hopefully it's true), which is a nice change from their two mini albums and singles release. Too bad I didn't live in Berlin or Paris when they had their mini world tour over there ::sighs::

twilighthush: ohh... you used to be a Pierrot fan? i used to be crazy about them, but not so much anymore.. they are still nice to listen to though :) haven't had the chance to listen to their new album yet, have you?

linny: o c'mon... L'arc isn't that bad XD but i guess i can hold that opinion for myself, since i was able to see them live in Baltimore this past summer XDDDD

jiayi: I unfortunately have absolutely no interest in listening to any more crap that DEG wants to put out. -saku- was quite possibly, the worst thing I've ever heard in my entire life. >_> They're trying too hard to be Slipknot-meets-Linkin Park-meets-Murder Dolls and it just does NOT work that way. I liked it better when they were just trying too hard to be Luna Sea. At least they sounded good then, though personally, Kisou's my fave album.

I still like Pierrot, though not as much as before. I haven't had a chance to hear Pierrot's newest yet -- I need to get it from slsk. Been lazy with the downloads though. xD;;;! I heard two songs from the new album. Smiley Skeleton and the b-sides that came with it were pretty good. :D

Not that big a fan of DesRay -- though all my friends are crazy about them. Their sound is a little too ... I'm not sure. But it's nothing I haven't heard before, if you know what I mean.

Lol. Harsh comments towards DEG. I don't know about them trying too hard to be like other bands though, since I've never understood how people can compare artists/groups to other artists/groups :| There are only so many different music styles out there, so to me, the comparisons sometimes come off as a bit farfetched, ya know?

Oh~ yea, I've listened to Smiley Skeleton and it's definitely a Pierrot song ^_^ Have you seen the MV? Heh, Kirito so cannot use a sword -_-;

Hm, I guess I agree that D'espairsRay sound isn't anything all too new compared to all the other jrock bands, but somehow it still feels like they have their own personal twist to it, ya know? Oh well, I still like them nevertheless XD Besides, they had Sugizo do a pretty interesting solo in Marry of the blood :)

For DEG, I am quite sad with Saku, but am hoping for better when their new album drops. THE FINAL was pretty good. I don't know what happened with Saku. @@

As for Pierrot, their new album is crap. Well, it isn't CRAP CRAP, it's just everything sounds the same. Pierrot's songs tend to sound alike, but this time, it's really apparent. Their sound this time is harder, so if you like their heavier songs, you'll probably like FREEZE. I honestly think Smiley Skeleton was the best song on that album.

As for Gackt and me not liking his ballads, it's not so much that I don't like his ballads. His old ballads are really good. It's just lately, his voice has been REALLY nasaly and it doesn't fit for a ballad. And the fact that he performs the same songs on lives all the time kind of killed some of them for me ... like Last Song.

Right now, I'm really liking FAKE?. They freakin rock. And of course, Inoran was from Luna Sea. I used to be really really into Luna Sea.

JiaYi: Oh my god. Don't even get me started on the 289375982375983279587 similarities between Luna Sea and Dir en grey. It's actually SICKENING how much was literally ripped off from Luna sea by Dir en grey. XD;;;!! I'm actually contemplating making a website for how much of a ripoff DEG really were back in the day. xD!

And yeah, I know about Sugi playing for DesRay. :D I have the song.

linny: FAKE? are great. I love them. Ken Lloyd is way cool and Ino <333!! Much love for Ino :D! And Luna Sea!~~! I'll always, always love LS. I'm still crazy about LS. :D

It sucks to hear that about Pierrot, dude. >\

Also. How the hell do I change my tagline underneath my username? Any clue how the hell I can do that? X_X;;; Or do they do it for you? O.o;;!! Nn. Do you have a SN by any chance? :D

JiaYi
01-22-2005, 02:09 AM
Haha, okies ^^ Won't get you started then...

Hm... yea... that's the problem I noticed with Pierrot sometimes... but I might like their new album then... if what linny said is true about the heavier sound.

Oh.. the tagline? It changes automatically after you get a certain amounts of post. I forget when it starts to change though... after 100? --a

How about SOAP? i quite like them. Haha. Of course that is quite a bit coz ken & Sakura are in there... And as everyone can easily tell, I am a laruku fan. Hehe.

I agree with Linny on Gackt. His new ballads are getting boring and very much similar stuff going around. I still think he's very pretty though. hahaha.

Where do you guys get your jrock fix? I can't seem to find any online... So I know next to nothing except the more popular ones..

And I don't like DEG. I like AKFG and Orange Range is not too bad. What do you all think about Janne da Arc?

Where do you guys get your jrock fix? I can't seem to find any online... So I know next to nothing except the more popular ones..I sadly haven't been keeping up with j-rock a whole lot, at least, not since k-pop started sucking away my life. That and random Cantonese songs. @@ I USED to get my fix at bunko, but since bunko's closed, I've just been idling around. Going to mp3 rotation sites are pretty good to get a couple songs here and there. I have no idea where to get new stuff now that most of the popular BTs seem to be closed.

I like AKFG and Orange Range is not too bad. What do you all think about Janne da Arc?AKFG IS SO MUCH CRACK. Loved them ever since hearing Rewrite and then watching one of their music videos where they "dance" down a wharf, following an elf. Kimi no machi de wasn't much different what with the synchronized swimmers being attacked by a giant red lobster. As for Orange Range, only one word is needed: LOCOLOTION!!! XD!

I haven't had time to really listen to Janne da Arc, but I've liked what I've heard so far. Right now, I'm having a little trouble distinguishing between La'Cryma Christi and Janne da Arc, but... heh. ^^;;

What do you guys think of Penicillin?

laruku: X______________X ARE. YOU. SERIOUS?!?!?!? You can't find any online!? OH MY GOD WOMAN!! Go download SOULSEEK! http://www.slsknet.org like, right now!! X_X!!! It is God's gift to J-rock, seriously.

I have about 60 gigabytes of music and video -- and about 75% of that is all j-rock. :D! 20GB is devoted to purely Sugizo/Luna Sea/The FLARE, and the rest is just my collection.

Janne da Arc ... they're bouncy and cute. But I don't care much for their music. It's a little too produced. Then again, they're on Avex, so wtf could we expect, right?

Yeah, this MPAA crackdown is really freaking annoying. Bunko was the shit, seriously. Loved it while it lasted, but -- alas -- nothing lasts for long. ;o;

AKFG's SHINY. Love them heaps. Sol-fa's such a smash, It topped the Oricon chart! :-)
Orange Range's MusiQ's pretty good too.
Anyone heard of Nightmare [Naitomea]? Their Tokyo Shounen's very nice, was addicted to it for like weeks.

xD; I'm personally not at all a fan of Nightmare. Frankly, they sound like oldschool DEG. XD *Death*

It goes like this:

Luna Sea -- > Dir en grey -- > Nightmare --> Gazette

Hmm~~~~~ Other bands... Schwein and Buck Tick are faves of mine... I LOVE Atsushi Sakurai <333~~~~~~~~ Just adore him to no end. FAKE? is great -- so is J.

You should check out The FLARE and Sugizo.

I'm a HUUUGEE J-Rock fangirl :excited: My fav bands are Malice Mizer, Moi Dix Mois, GLAY, Pierrot, Nightmare,Gazette, D'espairs Ray, Dir en grey, Ayabie, Janne Da Arc, MASK etc etc x_X

Well I kinda lost interest with Dir en grey coz of SAKU @__@ But Machiavellism is not bad though.. :-) And I really love Pierrot's Private Enemy and FREEZE albums :brows:

Is now embracing new bands :shifty:

linny
03-08-2005, 04:03 AM
I didn't like FREEZE as much as ID Attack. I don't know. It seemed like one song blended into each other. Smiley Skeleton was definitely a high light of that album.

HAS ANYONE HEARD THE NEW DIR EN GREY ALBUM YET? I must say, after hearing saku and Machiavellism, I was a bit weary of which direction they were headed in, but their latest "Withering to Death" seems like a good offering for the fans. A lot of the songs sound like throwbacks to older ones they've made while still headed towards that industrial sound that they've been gearing towards (like, THE FINAL style?).

It sort of makes me wonder though. This doesn't seem like an album that has any new styles to offer. Is this an album to develop what they've been experimenting with thus far or is it a filler album to appease fans who said they have turned sell out after hearing saku? I know that saku was not the greatest received single among fans.

Curious, curious.

At any rate, I'll have to listen to this album more to get a full feeling of what they've done, but I definitely like RVGRK, Jesus Christ R'nR and Kodou. XD

Yup very many people did show up. A museum was built for him. Many even tried to commit suicide. Everytime I watch the funeral I get really sad about it. So much of his music will be missed. He was a very crucial person in visual-kei.

Hey, well I am pretty new to J-Rock my absolute favorite as of right now is L'arc En Ciel cause every time I hear a new song I just love them more and more!
My friend just told me about a group called Glay, he said they are similar to L'arc and that I might enjoy them...

jbalibean
03-09-2005, 11:13 PM
Harmonycloud I love L' arc en Ciel also!! My favorite song by them is Niji, have you heard it? Obviously, I'm a huge Hyde fan, but I also like some of Gackt's stuff during his Malice Mizer period. Psycho Le Cemu is pretty good too. I have never heard of Luna Sea, but I also don't have much time to search for new bands. Currently I'm trying to dl a few bands that look good: Kagraa, Aburadako, Onmyouza, and Merry. Anybody know or like any of these?

neena
03-10-2005, 02:23 AM
lol, i'm hooked on J-rock...my favorites are Miyavi and Dir en Grey. Miyavi is very talented when it comes to guitar playing. Dir en Grey have very good lyrics...and i like both their style of clothing because their very unique! (especially Miyavi's style)

linny
03-10-2005, 02:35 AM
jbalibean - I've listened to some of both Kagrra and Merry and their both fairly good indies bands. I like Merry more for some reason, but that's just me. You should definitely check out Luna Sea if you have time! They're an old disbanded group, but their music is really good. I LOVE their pieces with violins in them ("UNTIL THE DAY I DIE" and "Providence" anyone?).

HarmonyCloud - GLAY IS A DEFINITE MUST! Some people don't like them because their fairly pop (probably more pop than rock), but they have some top notch songs. Their lyrics are more uplifting than most and their music is more simplistic, but the energy they have is just admirable. It's just fun watching them perform live. Their recent offerings have been a bit disappointing, but overall, they're a good band. The fact that they've been together for 10 years is impressive as well. XD~

Hi everyone  It's me, I like all J-rocks. Exactly I prefer J-Visual rock such as Dir en grey, Nightmare, Malice Mizer and Vivid. Anyway I still like all J-rock bands. My most favorite bands are Dir en grey and X-Japan. Haha...they're cool! :excited: Err...and for Dir en grey, in my opinion, their music now is change from the past. They use too many of electronica sounds. For me, I don't like it. I prefer their original sounds. Shinya's drum and Kyo's vocal are enough. lol. I forget...I like Shinya and Kyo. Haha...

Ok...nice to meet J-rock guys here, I'll drop my post here if I can.

i looove jrock.....i first got introduced to this kind of music through an anime called Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040...the opening theme was by Priss Asagari [i fink thats how u spell it] and i fell in love wif....as i started watching more anime..i was exposed to this kind of music..and i was drawn to it....my next step to jrock was GLAY. sum people say it ain't jrock..but i fink it is....lol....and then it kinda just went from there...from Luna Sea to Dir en Grey to Gackt to Pierrot.......the ist just keeps on growing....
GLAY are number one on my list along wif Luna Sea, Dir en Grey, Gackt..etc...
Luna Sea are a great band so i wuld recommend this band to anyone interestied in jrock....the best song form them is probably 'storm' or 'love song'.......

I've been realy getting into jrock lately.... I think most jrock bands are quite talented!

ShuiMei- Is remioromen rock? I never knew that! Even though i've only heard one of their songs, from 1 litre of tears, but it didn't sound that rock to me.
12012, Ayabie, Sid, Gazette, Kamikaze Boyz, Alice Nine, and more. Lawl.
Wah you like gazette? I think they're awsome! Who do you like out of the 5? I love their vocal, ruki! He is so adorable, and his voice is awesome too! The guitarists aoi and uruha are one of the best so far. Oh, and the drummer, kai, he's really talented.
I've only discovered 12012 recently, haven't heard of any of their songs, but they are really cute!

I have a friends who absolutely loves gazette. And she's totally jealous of me cuz i have the same name as her favorite drummer, kai. haha...it's pretty sad.

I LOVE J-rock. I only have a couple of songs from each band, but there are sooo many. My favorite is L'arc~en~ciel, but i also love 12012, AKFG, and Last Alliance.

J-pop is awesome too. any of you guys like m-flo, orange range, ai otsuka, or FLOW?

Yeah apparently everyone knows remioromen from the 1 Litre of Tears drama xD I've never seen it, I think the songs on it are 'Konayuki' and '3月9日'? They're not rock in the hard sense, it's more "laid back" and "mellow" like Mr. Children or Quruli

ShuiMei- yeah, it's konayuki and 3月9日. If you haven't watched 1 litre of tears, you should watch it, it's really good!
I see, how many people are in it? Do they play their own instruments?

Wah really? That's really cool, the same name: kai! I want my name to be ruki, but i guess it doesn't really suit for a girl XD

but it sounds so sad! XD I mean "1 Litre of Tears"! I actually cry really easily, but I don't mind crying so long as it's happy in the end, but it sounds pretty depressing xD everyone tells me to watch it "because you'll cry so bad" o_o;

There's three members in remioromen, and they play their own instruments :) The vocalist also has the job of playing the guitar ^^ and then there's the bassist and the drummer. They've got some more 'upbeat' songs but they always sound more subdued to me because the vocalist's voice is very um.. "hollow" sounding? If that makes sense xD

Vit ahh I can't watch 1 liter of tears, or I would shed 1 liter of tears:cry: I cry way to easy too! I actually started to cry at one part of ice age...I think thats sad lol

Oh Ruki looks so cute in the pics u posted Vit! He reminds me of a vampire

I love L'arc en Ciel also! I wish they would come to the US so i could see them live! Hyde came but only to CA and I am on the other side :bleh: But I am excited that IMF started playing Hyde MVs!!

Same! I wish they'd come too, or at least that I could go to Japan and see them live sometime. It's a pity that a lot of us listen to so much asian music but live half way around the world from them.

ShuiMei and Harmony: It is really depressing, and i think you'll cry 1 litre of tears. It's not really a happy ending though, if you've watched the front, you'll probably guess the ending. she'd die sooner or later
But it's so good, and it's the only drama that made me cry so much! just give it a go!

ShuiMei: i should go find some remioromen songs. I think they made it into the oricon charts before, when 1 litre of tears just came out!

harmony: which one? I didn't upload any ruki pictures..
if you are referring to this..

Yeah, 'Konayuki' sold insanely well, I don't know how well they did on the Oricon prior to '1 litre of tears' since I don't pay that much attention to the charts anymore ^^; If you liked their songs you should hear their other ones, I don't know if you'll like them, but personally I love xD They're not a huge favourite with me but I enjoy them

It really is depressing isn't it? Oh yeah, I'm definitely avoiding it xD I like happy endings and feeling gratified after crying my eyes out. If there's no happy gratification I get really mad at the ending ._.; LOL

Ruki? My avatar & banner. He is the vocalist for Gazette [don't tell me you don't know gazette too ><"" haha] But i love them ( and him). He's awsome.
Ryutarou is kawaii of course.. I have to agree with you!

I'm not a fan of dir en grey, i think some of the people are a bit scary. Maybe they're too rock for me?

fearless- thanks for the recommendations, i'll check it out soon!
ShuiMei- Hehe, i guess I can't make you watch it then. But if you are bored/ have nothing to do, please watch it! It won't dissapoint you! it's a really good show.
remioromen ne~ i guess i have to do more research on them before i listen to more songs of them. So far, i don't even know what they look like/ their names XD

I heard some Gazette on youtube, they are really good! Ohhh Ruki is the guy on ur ava! hehe I love his hair! I have this weird obsession with j-rock guys hair, they always have the coolest hairstyles!
I am not the biggest fan of Dir-en-gray but this will be my first concert to a japanese band, I am going with my friend who is a dir en gray fanatic so it should be fun anyway.

I haven't been to any jrock concerts, and i don't plan to go to one. Because i've seen in concert videos, everyone was so high! It's kinda scary, you know how in some songs the jrockers scream their lungs out, and the crowd are all so high & they jump etc. I think it's a bit scary =X haha

Jrockers have the BEST hairs ever! They have like perfect straight hair ( some of them are so dry though! Permed it too much).

I love the way their hair sways when they play the guitar

diru is pretty cool, the lead singer (kyo?) his voice is so awesome!
what i like most about his vocals is how large the range is. He could sing like any other rock star, but he can also do that screaming deal which is really energy pushing

The guitar work on certain songs is also very awesome, but i don't know their names either

Marmalade chainsaw and the FINAL are my faves from dir en grey

I love gazette's songs! Ok, I do love their song, but their looks is just extra.
I love the way they play their instruments and gets all the fans so high in their concerts.
Listening to JROCK is never boring. You can really listen to the voice, the instruments, background etc. It's really cool! I especially love Uruha's solo, almost in every song. The way he plays guitar is so cool, but also very talented.

So I think, to be a jrocker is not easy. Different to, say- chinese pop, where the artist don't need to know music, don't need to know how to sing, all they need is face. That's what makes jrock appeal to me, because all their songs are so cool, and they play it themselves. Some also composes their own songs.
