Best singer-composer? (besides Jay)

These choices are all pretty good and famous ones! They're all pretty talented singers, so pick the best one.

Most of them write and compose all of their songs, except tanya and leehom (he didn't use to compose all of them). Some even compose for other singers.

I heard a lot of JJ lin's songs.. and his songs like "Dou Jiang You Tiao" - O... So sweet!!! , "Jiang Nan" - So romantic!!!!!!! and a lot other hits.. all are so melodious!!

I heard Lee hom's Love Love Love... It's like... the music is so.... messy... and it's really a 20th century music... It's too messy.. and i don't really like that composition...

And Tanya.. and Penny... and Mayday and FIR plus Tao Ze all are not bad lah... but I think JJ's best among these nominators... hehez... JAY's still the BEST of all!

i chose Lee Hom as i think that his music isn't as mature as David Tao's and isn't as youngish as Jay's. It's somewhere in the middle, so i guess it is quite listenable especially with his soothing accented voice. His music carries a bit of western flavour and i enjoy his songs.

and I personally support them, such as Lee Hom, JJ Lin and Ah Xin.
But my vote went to David Tao. His melodies are beautiful, the lyrics of his songs

I agree, dou jian you tiao is a pretty sweet song! When I saw this topic, JJ was the first person that comes to my mind. Other composers is good too, but the second most good that I like is JJ!

I am torn between Lee Hom, Tanya and JJ Lin. :worry:

Lee Hom latest album is simply great! I like almost every song inside the album. His MV Forever Love lives up to my expectations. He is more involved in this album as well, even directed his MVs.

Tanya is one of the very few female singer-composers. I feel that she is quite under-rated. Her slow ballads are really soothing to the ears.

JJ Lin is another singer-composers that I like. I can't get enough of his dimples and his boyish grin. His first 2 albums were great and he composes every song in his album as well. I love his song Jiang Nan and Endless Road! And I can see that he did improved a lot from his first album.

So my vote goes to... JJ Lin. :wink2:

I voted for David. His creations are excellant and they are definitely more matured as compared to some of the other artistes featured in the poll.
Personally, I don't think that LeeHom is really that good a composer though he does have his standards. F.I.R. has definitely been 2004's best newcomer but their stuff is mostly radio-friendly hits. JJ Lin is the most improved singer in 2004 and Tanya Chua has always been good in her own genre.
I like Mayday too. Their lyrics are always good and even though their 'band' sound may not appeal to me as much as R&B, they are talented. Jue Jiang has got to be one of the best songs with the best lyrics.

your argument is kinda flawed...fast music is copying American music? Even after he intentionally added chinese instruments to create an individual chinese style? So i guess basically anyone who has a fast song is copying American Music. I mean i like DAvid Also, as much as i like leehom, but it's just that i disagree with the fast music copies american music. I'm not saying david isn't a good composor, i'm just saying leehom isn't a copier.

There are several singers that compose a little bit, but that's not enough to be considered a singer-composer. She probably only has 3-4 self-composed tracks out of all of her songs. The ones I picked compose most of their songs and compose a lot for other singers as well.

David Tao's good but somehow his music just doesn't affect me the way Jay's does.
LeeHom, good also and very cute but like above, doesn't affect me a lot except for some songs.
Mayday's talents tend to get ignored, all of them are so good as individuals and also as a band. But once again, not a lot of their songs affect me a lot.

So I chose JJ because I was impressed with his second album, to the extent I played his album on repeat mode for almost a month. That's quite a feat because I'm utterly biased towards Jay. :tongue:

I like David's older songs better than leehom's older songs. But i like leehom's newer songs better than david's newer songs.

Anyway i think they both have extreme talents and both have superb voices.

But i think what breaks the tie is that leehom produced/arranged/composed/wrote almost all the songs on his newest album and directed some MVS as well so i'd go wtih leehom. Also i'm still impressed someone who learned chinese at 18 can write almost all the lyrics to his new album haha.

i like david tao. he is very talented and has a good music knowledge. although he gets ideas from other songs, he stlye it in his way and that is what makes him distinctive.
