Was playing an online game and realised that people are speaking vulgar words, you know those chinese or dialect one?
and those are like young kids, maybe 12 or 13 years old.
then i posted another thread in another forum and people say it is okay to speak vulgar words and they feel proud to do that.
What is wrong with this world?

Is our language slowly degrading??

tell me about your opinion.

i think that those words wouldnt be so vulgar if they hadn't implied something hurtful or degrading.
but most people use those words as an added emphasis (an example would be "that's so f*ckin cool")
it's like the word diao. it's real meaning is taboo, but now that a lot of people use it as an emphasis instead of something that some prefer not to be mentioned, its use is fine by many.
i think that's the problem with censorship, it makes everything much more taboo and bad than it really is.
i'm fine with others saying those things, but i prefer to not do so myself, even though i slip up sometimes... :shy:

if it was me from the past i will say vulgarity is super normal to me in life....i came from a hokkien family. hokkiens are kindda easily provoked and very very 'high'...so its very normal for them to be harsh on their words.

i admit i did use those words before. but then eversince i went to church i kindda stop using them...i mean try not to use them..

some of the words are quite ok..at least they are acceptable. but then others like..the f word is really very rude. i personally dont like guys using that words.

I can't stand people who use vulgar words as well.

I think those people who use vulgar words excessively just goes to show that either they have got improper upbringing, or that they are people who don't even give themselves any respect. Some people nowadays even think that saying vulgar words makes them cool, which is just so wrong.

I am a Hokkien myself, and I don't think that Hokkiens are easily provoked or gets very very 'high'. People from other dialects use Hokkien words as well. So there is always this misconception that Hokkiens are rough or speak vulgar language.

I don't really mind how they are used. You can't exactly dictate how a person should act so it should be alright as long as you feel you are doing the right thing. I basically agree with khupno0do here that a vulgar term when used in a derogatory manner to someone which insults that person's moral being or which insinuates something is what makes it disgusting. Or if it's being used disrespectfully like, someone's bf calling his gf "b*****" for example, even if it's for fun. Why would someone think being called a b**** is fun!?

vulgarity is permissible if uttered off guard, like say, at the heat of the moment...
but then if it's a regular thing as blinking one's eye, then it's ill breeding! :bigyuck:

Vulgar to some are perfectly alright but to me its so wrong.

But seriously, they would get over the age whereby they think that speaking vulgar are cool and hip. Even if they tend to use vulgar, you must then see how they used it.

like what khupno0do had said, its just like saying [its so damn cool] or [its fu*ckin shit] Gah, they're merely cursing. Dont do it over-board of course, who can stand a person cursing the whole day long?

Using vulgarities to express yourself only demonstrates your poor vocabulary and also poor communication skills. There are more intelligent ways to express your anger than by using vulgarities. If you really want to insult somebody, say something of substance so that the other person will be unable to come up with a retort.

i do not oppose vulgarity neither do i condone it.

i dont think it's right, if you curse excessively. maybe once in awhile would be fine, but definitely not when it's being treated as punctuation marks.

i hate people who use those words like in every sentence they say, it gets really annoying. but then i do agree that there are certain times, where those words are PERFECT for describing stuff. sometimes i use those words and kid around with my sister, but like never out in public, unless i get really pissed off

If you really want to insult somebody, say something of substance so that the other person will be unable to come up with a retort.
For example, if someone insulted your mother, you could always say, "You spineless twit! Only your lack of courage drives you to insult a woman so divine. You truly have no gut. Your own lovely mother would be ashamed. Now! FEAR MY LINGUISTIC SKILLS." The person you were insulting would probably be so creeped out, they wouldn't know how to retort.

And saying vulgar words in general is not a good thing. I admit, there are instances when you are really angry when such words just come out, but I don't think it's acceptable in everyday conversation or should it be used to refer to specific people at any time. It is ill breeding to use it constantly and not have a care.

NO, NO and NO. For one thing, It's rude. For the next, imagine you are the one being scolded. It's just not right. I'll never use them.
Some of my guy friends scold others using vulgarity. I will look at them for a few seconds and just look down. [It's my habit to stare down. Evenwhen I'm walking. I dunnoe why.] They eventually get my meaning. ^^

i cant stand it when people use them....i will either ignore them or just tell them not to..its really rude...its like having no table manners to me....
i dont use them.....i mean there are other words to use and other options...but i have lots of little cousins who already learning vulgar words....but when i hear them i have to tell them off.... i dont think its right...

"For example, if someone insulted your mother, you could always say, "You spineless twit! Only your lack of courage drives you to insult a woman so divine. You truly have no gut. lolz....that's a funny way of retorting...wonder if sum1 can come out with sumthing like that in an instant...i definitely can't...hehe
for me, i dun think it is right to use vulgar words..it is very disrespectful....n not to mention disgraceful too. but i do understand y some youngsters use it in every single sentence they utter.....it's because they think it's cool. n we can't change the way they think about it cuz almost evry1 around them thinks so too. n usually(not always)...the parents does that...n that's where the child picked it up from...it happens in my family(cousins...etc....)...not in my immediate family though...so i kinda understand....haha
but it's acceptable if sum1 curses in anger...sumtimes we are engulfed by emotions n in dat sudden state, it is acceptable....that's wat i think anyway

hmm.. i don't know if i agree with that. it's definitely become pretty common to use vulgar words but that doesn't mean it's right. one of my friends has developed the habit of using the f word quite a bit and honestly, it bugs me a lot. i don't think it's very classy no matter how common it's become.

I think it should be wrong. I think it really shows how bad the person is if he or she uses it. But it is becoming quite common nowadays. I think sometimes out of anger people may use them but we should try to make it to a minimum.

hmm.. vulgarity is not my cup of tea.. hahhah.. :D even when quarrelling, i perfer to speak logically instead of using vulgarities.. i think vulgarities really should not be used in any case.. it will only worsen the situation.. and some hokkien vulgarities targets parents or something personal (i hope people who speak hokkien understands what i mean:brows:)

It depends really, sometimes if i'm really mad then i'll use vulgar words but if i'm in front of like 10 year olds i won't use them. i used to use them to emphasise something i wanted to say but after a while i realised it was stupid so i stopped. i think it's irresponsible to use vulgar words infront of kids who could copy them especially when they could be broadcasted on the media like songs with 'motherf***ing' and songs about 'h*es' and stuff- it's just stupid.

I'm always careful who I swear in front of. I've never swore in front of my parents and I never will although I did accidentally say the F word in front of my mum because I was watching football and one of the players did something realllly stupid  I wouldn't swear in front of kids either. I'd also watch my mouth at work because you wouldn't want your colleagues to start thinking that you're a foul mouth, would you ?

But I admit that I swear in front of my friends whom I know don't mind me swearing. Hehe.

hmm.. yea i think vulgar words are wrong but it does depends. for me i only say them to my self liek 'shit i made a mistake-lost a game. and my favorite which i never use " oh d***ation"
though it depend whether you're sayin with attitude. cuz sayin them like they are normal words are okay or just for fun- like sayin the movie " meet the fockers"
but when a person get mean and start sayin like every other word like the f-word, then is just dumb, make me look down to them.
plus these days vulgar words have so many meanin that they replace some words we use to day. for example the f-word. "this is f***ing( really/very) wrong, i wanna f***(sleepwith ya) tonight, this is f***ed (messed) up, F*** you! (kinda like shutup).
but really we got millions of word out there that are way nicer and more polite, yet we use these words, whhhhyy???!!! oh the humanity

yeah, i dont swear in front of my friends, only the close ones, definitely not in front of little toddlers. although my dad caught me calln my sister the f word. i think it's good that these words arent allowed to be said in public, cos when you actually say it, people know that you mean it, that you're really angry/excited etc. i hate it when people use it as an everyday vocabulary, it's just plain retarded

i honestly dont see the point of using vulgar language. you could just as easily say something a little more allayed instead of cussing your head off. i think that when people use vulgar language, it just means they arent as intelligent and cant think of any other words to use but those ugly ones (: just my 2 cents

slurpjay
01-11-2005, 09:17 AM
Well, I'm fine with vulgar language aslong as it's used in private between consenting parties. Sometimes my friends and I cuss and its fine but swearing and such really shouldn't be brought into chatrooms or any other public areas.

"don't their parents teach them well?" --> I'm sure almost all parents do, but kids are so easily influenced, especially in online games. No matter how hard parents try, they cant be around their kids 24/7 to make sure they arent being exposed to vulgar language.

i don't condone the use of vulgar words. i really think that its all up to whoever is using it. if its agains your morals, fine, and if you really don't care, say whatever the hell you want. i personally do use a lot of "bad words"...and i'm not proud of it. but i don't find it all that offensive. i think that since everyone around me uses it all teh time...its just kidn of become part of everyday conversation. and when we call ppl "b*tches" or say like "f***"...we don't usually mean it that strongly but we use it anyways jsut because its so normal. i try not to use words like that around ppl who would be offended by it or i don't know whether they would be offended or not. but i use it. a lot.

rosiean86
01-26-2005, 03:46 AM
I think it's wrong, but I know most people use it for emphasis. I used to swear quite a lot, but I don't now-unless I'm truly truly angry or suprirsed. To me, the F word is the most taboo word..so is motherf*****. I don't like guys who use that word too much and loosely.

I don't like the fact that it's become such a common part of everyday conversation, and that little kids are learning cuss words from us. I mean..I know a lot of ppl who, when they meet someone who can speak another language, they first off ask them how to cuss in that language. I find that horribly absurd.

I dislike vulgar words, but I do swear sometimes when I recieve a shock. (like if I suddenly trip in the middle of the road and the lollypop man has to drag me to the other side ) I'm careful not to swear in front my mum, and extra careful not to do i in front of my dad. I know who won't mind if I do it a little, and I'm trying to cut it out.

I do use vugular words to swear though I tried not to say it too loudly. It is a good way to vent off anger for me. But I'm trying to substitute vugular with some more polite. Actually my swearing became worse recently.. Sheesh.. I think swearing is wrong but no one is perfect so once in a while swearing is ok..

Hmm wow this is a good topic cuz there are so many opinons about this, but I admit that I do swear and use vulgar words, espeically when I am mad, but it's a bad habit, I know, something that is really hard to change. It's like wheneever I'm pissed off the first word that comes to mind is F*ck..or S*ht..it's really bad I think, so I dont' try to use it whenever I can. Some people believe that it's their mouth and their mind and they can say whatever they want, but honestly I think people really do need to be careful what they say around others because other ppl might get offended to hear such foul language. Also, this goes into anger..I don't believe if your angry you have right to yell and scream, other people dont' need to know ur business, and I know a lot of ppl think this is right, but saying vulgar words and swearing doesn't make you anymore powerful..so yah..I think it is wrong, but we're all human, and can't really help it..we can just control it as much as possible

as long as it's not constantly used i think it's okay. now and then, everyone swears. don't tell me YOU never ever sweared! =P

but i think swearing in front of lil children is wrong. especially children pick up words very quickly!! i mean, you actually can see that on the street, or particulary in school.. sometimes i'm really wondering: how come such a lil kid can swear like that already?? i mean, they even talk to eachother in such a vulgar way..

so in my opinion using vulgar words now and then, is okay.. but using the f-word like the osbournes do, is just TOO much!!

02-02-2005, 03:59 AM
It's not wrong or right, unless your religion states that it isn't right. Personally, I think it's just crass. You (generally) don't cuss during a business interview. As much as vulgar words express a certain amount of anger, I'd rather substitute it with another word.

canuck_girl39
02-02-2005, 04:45 AM
like cici bebe said, it's not right or wrong. personally, i don't mind some cursing every now and then, but i know some people who swear on every other word, and that's totally annoying. i think swearing makes you look stupid, cuz it shows you're not intelligent enough to think up other words. i'm not saying i don't cuss at all, but people have to learn to keep it on the low.

freebird_brown
02-10-2005, 01:45 AM
i don't see why swear words are different from any other word except that some people get offended by them. so i say, just be courteous to those who would be offended and realize that the words are colloquial so don't say it in a business interview or watever.

it amazes me how a simple word can cause such emotions lor... i mean, if u think about it.. vulgar words are simply words.... it amazes me how humans can denote so much meaning to a word... anyway, yeah, i agree, when u use vulgar words, it does make u seem uneducated or ignorant.. when i was younger, i used to use vulgar words a lot.... but now, i just dont... dont feel the need to.... i dont no, its kinda weird.. cos words like f*** and sh** just kinda lost its "relieving anger" usage at the moment for me... but... i do not like other ppl using vulgar words too much either...

ohhhh i just thought of something that sayin vulgar words can be a good thing. lol. but yeah. well just look at hk movies these days, once in awhile they would have someone say shiet or ass. and the funny part is that they got some weird accent like a british-cantonese accent to it . :wink2:

I'm a well educated writer.

I use vulgar words all the time, especially in my writing when dealing with subjects that are unconventional and... well, vulgar.

It's a shock factor, personally.

There was a time, fifty years ago, when words like "damn" and even "God" would've gotten you in trouble. 8,D; Funny how time changes, huh? Now television allows words like "bitch", "ass", and various other 'vulgar' terms slip right by the censor radar.

b*tch! @$$!!! f*Ck!!

these words are often censored or put it in a way (like the above) to somehow lighten the harshness..why? bitch is the equavalent to a female dog...to me, a female counterpart of an animal is not at all vulgar, after all, how often do you see words like hen (female chicken) censored? the ass is a part of a human body. f*ck..haha i have a better idea..view the link below..its actually quite hilarious..sheds a whole new light to the "F" word...

Vulgar words are just words. Words don't really mean anything when you speak them without meaning them of without thinking about it.
It doesn't make you a better or cooler person just because you use vulgar words. It also doesn't necessarily make you a bad person because you swear.

then i posted another thread in another forum and people say it is okay to speak vulgar words and they feel proud to do that.
What is wrong with this world?

Is our language slowly degrading??

I don't think our language or society is degrading. There will always be gentlemen and ladies who do not speak rashly or rudely, and there will also be people who just don't give a hoot about manners.

At the end, there is no right or wrong about vulgar words. In my opinion, you can have your own opinion on matters and how you use words, it is only wrong when you are intentionally hurtful or mean without saying anything of substance.

I try not to use vulgar words so often although sometimes I do when I get angry and lose my temper. But I think it is quite unnecesary to swear most of the time. It would only make others angrier. So it is best to think wisely before speaking, no matter what words you use.

I think vulgar words should not be used at all. It is offensive and unnecarssary(I think that's how you spell).I personally do not use them as I feel they are inappropiate. People may think using these words are 'cool' but actually, it doesn't.
I think people use those words because we hear them everywhere, films, streets, t.v or even in songs. there are people out there who will follow or copy there idols in whatever way. So if a small child liked a certain Actor or actress and this particular actor/actress swore, the child will copy, the child will copy and it will stay with them as they grow up. I think this is the sad bit.
I mean, what is the good things about vulgar words? the word 'vulgar' says it all, those words are really 'vulgar'.

But can it be helped?

yeah i think i agree that people tend to copy what their favourite actors or actresses say in television shows... because it would boost their intelligence, impressionally.

Well, if this is the sad bit.. then maybe its right that such shows should be censored and parents shouldn't allow children to watch such shows..

Definition of vulgar. vul·gar adj. 1. Crudely indecent.

crudely indecent...

definition of crude:
1. Being in an unrefined or natural state;

indecent..
2. Offensive to public

crudely indecent
being in an unrefined state offensive to public
which is also the definition of vulgar

language should be simply understood as words used

so vulgar language would be unrefined words offensive to public

so unless you are a unrefined person that like to offend the public, refrain from vulgarities..

why is it offensive?

maybe people don't understand the definition of those bad words.. but all they know is that it is an insult, and then the basic reaction would be to get angry... so they feel offended.

haha.. i did a school project on Vulgarities.. whether vulgarities is good or bad.. erm.. i tink there is no right or wrong.. i tink is how u interpret it as.. like for example u scold some when u are playing cs.. is that consider as right or wrong? i personally tink is alright, because u are not using it to scold someone.. but the opposite team, might b offended.. and start a fight.. so my point is using vulgarities is alright ONLY at the right time.. it do add some spice into the conversation.. :P

i am the kind who totally detest people using vulgar words.if i hear any of my close friends speaking of them, i will tell them nicely that i wont tolerate it if i hear them again. i just cant fathom why people speak of those words. it just reflects on how unrefined they are. maybe its due to the lack of vocab one has?i am not sure. i have friends giving me reasons like this.

I used to use them often but now I don't use them that much but they do still slip in sometimes. When I'm angry though, well yeah...I swear...a lot.

haha.. i did a school project on Vulgarities.. whether vulgarities is good or bad.. erm.. i tink there is no right or wrong.. i tink is how u interpret it as.. like for example u scold some when u are playing cs.. is that consider as right or wrong? i personally tink is alright, because u are not using it to scold someone.. but the opposite team, might b offended.. and start a fight.. so my point is using vulgarities is alright ONLY at the right time.. it do add some spice into the conversation.. :P

I don't think it's right to use vulgar words to add spice into the conversation.. It won't be a conversation after using vulgar words, it would be a flooding of censored words all over..

Hmm, how come you got to do a project on vulgarities?
I don't think there's a right time to use it.
It really makes pisses people off..

Nowadays I don't type it directly into the online games that I play, but sometimes I still use 'wtf' and 'wth'... I'll try to set a good example and stop using them from now on!!

yea..not exactly the most "lady-like" way to act..
sometimes i swear..if im really really annoyed or something takes me by surprise or im very very angry, but i dont just use it for the sake of using it to seem "cool"
whats so cool about swearing anyway? i dont use them very often but f***ing hell!!! what's wrong with..nah..jokes jokes..haha..:D
yea..its not cool..it just makes me think less of people who swear, its like a chore listening to what they haf to say while you filter out those words in your head..haha..well..thats how i think of it anywaz..

it looks like vulgarities are popular with kids because society is being half-assed (forgive my use of ass:angel: ) about keeping them taboo. while they let badass (again  ) movie stars to use them in cool and dangerous movies without censoring them, kids ands dumbasses  think it's cool to swear, and then in other places swearing is all taboo, like on tv. maybe over time when it becomes less taboo (like sex is starting to become) swearing will be sprawled out in the open and not so much of a cool thing for kids cause it doesn't help them get the attention they're seeking. Ps. I don't agree with wild sex as a sport, or sprawling swearing out in the open. Anyone know the origin of profanities? Why are they considered to be so bad? I've always been curious...

I don't really use them unless I'm really mad and that's just the occasional 'shit' or 'what the hell'. I don't mind people saying the occassional swear word, but I can't stand it when people use it like their daily volcabulary.
