You see people smoking all around us. In a shopping centre, bus stop, market, parks, restaurants, etc, it seems that we cannot get away from the smokers.
My opinion is that, smoking should be banned. It harms our body and can cause many types of diseases. Also, the innocent ones are harmed also, like the smoker's children and wife. And now, many people are dying all because of smoking. What makes me puzzle even more is that people still want to smoke despite the fact that thay know smoking kills.
What's your opinion on the issue of smoking? Should it be banned? I want to hear from you all.

yes..generally i think yes.
my father is a great smoker. and my mom got cancer. i feel so random coz my dad just wont stop it. the smell was like crap. and i hate it even more when he smoked in front of the little ones like my sister's kids...his leading them into bad habits
and i dont wanna die of second hand smoking  ...my grandpa died of kung cancer coz of smoking too...
this is a nice debate topic...
i think it should be definitely banned, my dad is a smoker, i hate how he smokes around the house, the smell just kills me, i wish i was allergic to it so he can quit. i cant stand how ppl smoke in public places like on the streets and stuff, why cant they be less selfish and stop harming other ppls' bodies as well as their own? i wish they would finally realize how bad smoking is to them and us, its dumb to keep on smoking when u know that it kills u....

tangwk, interesting you should bring this up. Did you know that very recently NZ (i.e. New Zealand) has recently banned smoking nationwide in bars and restaurants etc. I believe it's one of the best ideas our government has ever come up with.
The way it's been set to work is that if someone is smoking in a restaurant/bar etc, and is caught by a healthy authority (or something like that), then the store owner gets fined some massive amount. So naturaly it's in the business' best interest to ask that person to leave. One flaw however, is that the smoker doesn't get fined even if the manager/owner does.
For Auckland's casino, they've created a smoking balcony. So those who smoke don't get mad about not being able to smoke, and those who don't smoke aren't bothered by them.
I think it's the best approach, because completely banning it from everywhere will lead to other problems. It'll become more attractive and valuable - hence it would be yet another thing to enter into the black market. So I believe this is probably the best approach.
The thing is, it's all down to the person themself. Generally people are considerate about not smoking in others faces, but there are some that still do. Unfortunately there will be many that will smoke regardless of a ban, but luckily there has been a huge drop in numbers who do smoke. Looks like we're slowly heading in the right direction yea?
Good topic mate :wink2: should be interesting to see other people's view on this.

Absolutely YES, it should be banned !! I don't find any benefits from smoking. It all makes the bad healthy for smokers and the around people. It makes people die and suffer. It's not only the direct effect from smoking, it can effect the world atmosphere when generated too much Carbondioxide.
I hate the one who smokes because they are selfish, think only what they want to do (smoking) don't care the others who will suffer with them

i think smoking MUST be banned.. its brings nothing but harm to the body.. the goverment should start more anti-smoking activity to encourage smokers not to smoke.. and help them kick the bad habit..
and if the people wants to smoke.. they should be more considerate also.. not to smoke in front of elderly and small kids are a must..

Just got an article from The Straits Times today:
Bosses smoked and she got cancer
Campaign on to make pubs and clubs smoke-free as part of effort to protect non-smokers like her
By Radha Basu
MADAM P.Y. Chan spent 32 years inhaling second-hand cigarette smoke as a stenographer working for a succession of bosses who were heavy smokers. She stopped working 15 years ago, but the damage was done.
Memories of those countless smoke-filled days came crowding back to her mind earlier this week when she was diagnosed with lung cancer, which kills 18 people here every week.
In a bid to protect non-smokers like her from the ravages of the deadly disease, the Health Promotion Board (HPB) and the National Cancer Centre (NCC) launched a campaign last night to make pubs, bars and clubs - one of Singapore's last public bastions for nicotine addicts - smoke-free.
The campaign was launched at the trendy Attica Too pub at Clarke Quay with the unveiling of a giant scroll for pub-goers to sign up and show their support.
This is probably the first time the HPB is 'lobbying the public' to garner support to bring about a change in legislation, said Ms Choo Lin, manager of the board's national smoking control programme.
The current smoking ban extends to places like air-conditioned buildings, public transport and hospitals.
Speaking in Parliament on Nov 24, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Yaacob Ibrahim had hinted that the ban could be extended to pubs and bars, but added that public consultation would be necessary before that.
The signature campaign is a way for the Government to gauge public sentiment on the issue, said Ms Choo.
HPB hopes to hold the campaign in two more pubs over the next two months. The scroll will then be handed over to representatives of the National Environment Agency.
'Studies overseas have shown that the amount of harmful air pollutants are 450 per cent more in indoor pubs and bars than at home if you are living with one smoker,' said Ms Choo, adding that HPB and its campaign partner NCC was particularly keen on seeing the ban extended to such establishments.
Doctors too are concerned. Although there are no official statistics, they estimate that about three in 10 lung cancer patients here are non-smokers.
'We are definitely seeing more non-smokers diagnosed with lung cancer, including many women,' said Dr Loo Chian Min, a consultant at the Singapore General Hospital's department of respiratory and clinical care medicine, which is where many lung cancer cases are first diagnosed.
'And the patients are also getting younger.'
Women are of particular concern, added Ms Choo, citing overseas studies that show that women are more susceptible to the ill effects of cigarette smoke than men.
Local researchers agree. Studies here and overseas have shown that women who are regularly exposed to passive smoking have a 20 to 30 per cent higher chance of getting lung cancer than those who are not, said Associate Professor Adeline Seow of the National University of Singapore, who has done extensive research on non-smoking women who have lung cancer.
Madam Chan is one such victim. 'Smoking was banned in offices many years ago, but my bosses flouted the ban,' said Madam Chan, now 67. 'And I am feeling the repercussions today.
'It's really not fair to make others pay for your bad habits, is it?'
(From The Straits Times, 24 December 2004)
See, this proves that many smokers are harming the innocent ones. I feel so sorry for them, including those who admitted that they were harmed by their father by smoking in this forum. :depresse: And the government should quickly ban smoking, or at least control it to an extent that the smokers would not harm the innocent ones.

see!!! thats it!!! i hate smoker!!! they are nothing different from suckers!!! :-x
i really hate them. when they are having the pleasure whereas their love ones will have to suffer...whats so happy bout this? cant they just wake up or what?
whos that idiot who came up with this cigratte thingy? :-x
this really add alot of pressure to everyone. since they are banning smoking here and there i rather they ban it totally to save troubles.
i watched this thing on tv and it was about how ppl tried different ways to make safe ciggaretts long ago and none succeeded, there is no safe ciggarett even if ppl smoke lights, they're still very harmful to everyone, i hate the smell of the smoke!!!!!!!! i feel like my throat is closing on me, i just wish that all the smokers will learn the bad effects with smoking and quit before they learn it the hard way....

Kasic, calm down  you won't hate your dad right ? did you ever talk with him on your points ?
I think the old person who used to smoking habit, are hard to quit but the young generation is tend to follow them. When the government announce the banned smoker rule, there are no place for the smoked people, home will be the danger place to live for those who didn't smoked.
hmm.. wanna see the smoker idea around here

for your info...yes i hate my father.
haha yes i do wanna see a smokers view here. see what they will say. if smoking means so much to them, then what about life? they are ruining themself and their family....
if they love smoking so much fine...then leave their family alone.
i agree with kasic_fantasy, smokers probably do value smoking over their life, but if they want to ruin their own lives then they should at least leave the other ppl alone, go smoke somewhere else,
i especially cant stand the sight of pregnate woman puffing away, its so wrong, the baby isnt even born yet and their own mothers are killing them with every breath, it makes me want to go up to them and make them realize what they're doing to their own babies...

I agree that smoking is horrible and should be banned, but I don't think smokers are horrible. I think they've just made a really stupid choice...
A lot of them realize their stupid choice, too, but sadly... most of them are too addicted now to quit. I don't believe I've ever talked to one smoker who thought they made a good choice by starting to smoke.
Of course, I am also rather annoyed by those who smoke around non-smokers, and in turn, pollute their lungs. We were the ones who chose not to make that decision, it would be nice if they would realize that, and not try to kill us off like they're killing themselves. Especially since second hand smoke is even MORE harmful than just enhaling it through a cigarette. It's just a bad deal all around.

All the more smoking should be banned!! I mean, MUST be banned!!! The mother is actually murdering the baby and she should be charged for murder if the baby dies.

Smoking is very BAD! At least the percentage of teens taking drugs is decreasing. I hold my breath whenever I see anyone smoking nearby.
You guys will have to kill the guy who created tobacco, John Rolfe. hehe, that was like in the 1600s...

You're right!! Let's kill that person!! Should also ask some people from Long Quan Pai to help us!!! And then we shall ask Jay how to Hui Dao Guo Qu....
Anyway, how lucky I am to be in a non-smoking family. However there are some bad experiences that has to do with smoking.
Once, I have an excursion with my classmates, and we saw the bus driver smoking in the bus, which stinked up the whole bus!!! :rasp:
And there was also once I went to Hong kong with my family. My father asked for a non-smoking seat and you know what the waiter say? He say, "you are welcome to smoke anywhere you want." :-x
I live in an apartment. Occasionally I can even smell people smoking from the unit below mine.
I agree with you all that smokers are indeed selfish people, in fact very selfish. What they care is only themselves, not other people who get affected by smokers. And everytime I have to hold my breath to prevent me from inhaling the smoke.
And I really pity all those innocent people who are affected by other smokers.

we talked about this in health class. it was really tough to go by the demands of both non-smokers and smokers becuz after smokers are addicted, they need the stuff inside to keep moving on. we came up with this: they should have a law that people can only smoke in open areas where there arent any non-smokers.
i think smokers should go to support groups or they should get those nicotine things from the drugstore that help them gradually get off the addiction. it would be a lot easier if they'd just quit.

smoking isnt entriely bad, there should just places in public, where its' reserved entirely for smokers, cos those cigs smell really bad sometimes, and my nose starts to hurt...
but i think if it is banned, even more people are going to smoke, because alot of people tend to do stuff, when they're not allowed to.

yes, I would BANNED smoking PERIOD. My dad and my grandpa is a smoker too, but my dad is smoking less now (YAY!) and for my grandpa he says 'he needs to smoke or he'll die.' but you DIE from smoking, people are so dumb these days. I HATE the stench of it.its like wherever you go, you see people smoking and you cant run away from it and of course it affects the young ones. I remember there was this guy smoking and a little kid said 'he wanted to smoke when he grew up.' OMG. stupid little kid.but yeah, its harming not us but the whole environment as well. SMOKING DISGUSTS ME.. =/
and there was this one AWFUL day when I was in the car with my dad. just me and him and he stared to SMOKE.-GAGS & DIES- I was dying in the car and i opened all the windows.... :bigyuck:
ps. doesnt the cigarrette taste awful? how do people smoke that thing...SICK.

but for some people it's differen though, like my grandma use to smoke when she was young, but sh'es like seventy something and she's healthy like a cow. while some people just smoke alittle bit and they end up getitn lung cancer or something
my friends says it tastes good or something, and it makes you relax, but as long as i dont smell it, i dont really care if it's banned or not, cos if it is, people will still find ways to get it

Hmm... what I'm thinking is that the government should ban the sales of cigarettes as well so as to effectively prevent people from smoking. And those who own cigarettes should be punished by law. Furthermore they should send police officers to have a surprise check in peoples' homes to find cigarettes since owning cigarettes is unlawful. And for smokers who still want to smoke, they should smoke at designated places for all smokers and they cannot take cigarettes out of that designated place.
I got another opinion. I think actors and artists who smoke really set a bad example to their fans. Their fans would start following them and smoke. This make the situation even worse. And it harms not only the actors' and artists' health but also their fans' health. Anybody know of any actors and singers who smoke?

Yes, I've thought about this topic before.. i feel smoking should be banned, cos there is absolutely no benefits from the cigarettes' smoke whatsoever..
they harm the body and our own health being.. plus once u have the first puff, it's hard to turn back.
the worst thing is, second-hand smoke does more harm than the first-hand one!! :profanit:
So smoking should be banned. But i think not all countries have banned them 'cos they can get taxes from cigarettes themselves.. so it's sorta like an alternative in gettin' more $$ into their pockets.
but they do try to advise us not to smoke though.

Yeah...I think smoking should be banned but I guess the governments would not do so, having to consider about tourists needs and maybe profits too. Currently in Singapore, the price of each packet of cigarettes is relatively expensive, which is done to deter people from buying them. I think it's a pretty good action taken, though there are still people smoking..
Maybe the governments should make an effort to ban smoking in more public places..that may help to make the situation better..

I too feel that smoking shld be banned!! I can't stand it when i see someone lighting up a cigarette and puffing away :-x . The smell of the smoke stinks and pollutes the air, aargh!! Smokers juz leave a bad impression to me. I went to the Body Worlds, where you'll get to see the insides of a human bodies, REAL HUMAN BODies! I saw the lungs of a smoker and non-smoker. There was a huuuuge difference! The lungs of a smoker was CHARCOAL BLACK :rasp: ! This is true, i'm not lying! So if you're a smoker, pls kick the habit pronto!!!

If I were someone who could make laws....
I would definitely propose that smoking be limited.
Maybe not ENTIRELY banned, but try to set many goals for people to stop and quit.
Also, set parameters for people to smoke in and not all over the place...
SMOKING IS HARMFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not only to themselves, but to OTHER PEOPLE too. T______T

I too really think smoking should be banned. Especially in public places.
Today, I just went to Niagara Falls. My parents went into that new casino, I think it's called Niagara Fallsview, went to have like 45-minutes gambling. I was underage (16) so I couldn't go in and just walked around the resort and went browsing around shops. When that was over, there was nothing to do so I waited in the centre, right in front of the main exit of the casino centre. Than I started smelling this strong smell of cigarettes. I looked around and nobody was smoking. The smell was so strong my eyes started to get red. Than when my parents came out, they said around every poker table, people were smoking. So when I went home, my jacket smelled like cigarettes.
I think smoking should only be allowed when there is only the smoker in the car. Nowhere else. And I think after they smoke and come back into the crowd, maybe they should think about putting on some perfume or cologne. Because they really stink after they've smoked.
Yea, that's my two cents.

I think that people shouldn't smoke. Even though it's their choice to destroy their lungs..it's not healthy for others because of the second hand smoke. I mean...what if it were a little baby that was inhaling in all the second hand smoke of someone on a bus or train, it would mess up their lung system. Maybe smoking should be allowed..but i don't think everywhere. I think that it should only be in a designated place where other people can't smell it. Smoking smells extremely bad..for those who smoke..think of all the people that you are harming!!!!!

I think smoking should be banned to help those who don't smoke. I dated a smoker, but it was so hard because I was always worried about him! :worry: I was afraid that something bad would happen and he would get sick. Smokers make me worry too much!
I am glad that in California smoking is banned in resteraunts and bars, that way innocent resteraunt workers don't have to suffer for othes' addictions! I also think it is fair to rise the price on cigarrettes so it makes it harder for younger kids to buy them!
Smoking should be banned but not completely, because the smokers also have their rights.
Still, it's unfair for the innocent people who inhale second hand smoke.
I think our mayor here in Davao City, Philippines has done a very good job with our anti-smoking ordinance here. All business establishments are required to have an enclosed smoking area/room, without which, they won't be given licenses to operate their businesses.
Smoking is also strictly prohibited in public places such as malls, restaurants provided they follow the set guidelines.
In my university also, they had proposals of setting up smoking booths for the smokers.
Aiyaaaah, I just hope those smokers come around before it's too late! And for the younger kids, better not try smoking. Because before you know it, you'll get addicted. I just hope everyone will take the necessary efforts to improve their health

after reading a few replies, i can see that everyone has a realli strong opinion on this topic. most people wants to ban smoking for very legit reasons; because it kills not only the smoker but the people that inhale the smoke, it smells gross and there is nothing positive that comes out of smoking except it gives the smoker a bit of a rush rite after smoking.
i have to walk about 20 mins to get to my university. I actually enjoy the morning walks, seeing the city come alive with life, and walking back to the subway station at nite, looking at the lights in the buildings. However, i have to walk through a business building to get to the interesection of my university. There is no way to not walk through the building. Outside of the building, business men and women are constantly smoking, i could smell it from the inside. I actually hold my breath when i walk outside of the building until i turn the building. it's quite sad knowing that they are killing themselves and killing me and other innocent ppl.
i think that is smoking was banned completely or if it was suggested, it would make it that much more "dangerous" and some people would want it even more. I know that smoking is horrible for ones health and there is no good that can come out with it. i think slowly with time and with each generation and less manufactors, smoking can be lessened

I was really shocked while I looked through the threads in the Social Lounge. Well, here is the link to that particular thread: http://jay-chou.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1501&page=1&pp=10
The title is: What cigarettes do you guys smoke?
I just think that people had just made a really stupid choice when they smoke. They are just stupid. And they even know that smoking causes cancer and they still smoke. I know that stopping smoking is hard for these people but it IS possible for them to stop smoking. My grandfather is one example. He used to smoke before I was born and after my family members persuaded him to stop smoking. And he stopped that. See! This is possibe.
I'd also like to see the smokers' view on whether smoking should be banned.....

Smoking is really bad for your health and it does causes diseases .. I also stopped smoking recently, I realized that it had a really bad smell, not just for your clothes but also your hair and your fingers will stink and you can even get a bad breath  Your fingers and teeth can get yellow .. and that isn't pretty to look at.. And now I'm stopped I feel so much cleaner and not addicted to some cigarette.. To all the addicted ones to cigarettes: STOP SMOKING, it really kills !! And it's a waste of money !!
i smoke, but i know its bad. why do i do it anyways? BECAUSE I WANT TO. ironically, many of you must think that there is nothing that comes out of smoking but death and so it must be banned.. but what you narrow minded people do not realize is that when you smoke, you get a feeling that is GOOD. if i feel stressed or sad or whatever, smoking one cigarette relaxes me and gives me a lil rush, and this makes everything seem a tad bit better. there are pros and cons, not just all cons like you guys seem to believe. who the hell in the world would smoke just to kill themselves and smell bad for no reason? ive tried to cut back on smoking daily or habitually... i want to do it only when i really need it and if so then i smoke ultra lights or something. the vast majority of smoking statistics are about pack-a-day smokers, so i dont think one ultra light a couple of days would be that bad.
and id think that banning smoking will be like the prohibition act (in the US) of the early 90's... people will still manage to get their hands on cigs and smoke anyways, just like how weed is banned but every other person does it.

I was just about to point that out. ;x
You guys have to realize.. Even if smoking is bad for your health, people out there still do it. And they have reasons to. I'm sure the average smoker doesn't smoke just for the hell of it. :x As mentioned before, cigarettes could be like stress relievers for many people, especially celebrities like actor/esses and musicians.
Don't get me wrong --I'm against smoking and second-hand smoke and everything, but I just don't think banning cigarettes and all that would actually do any good. :/ We wouldn't want people taking out their anxiety and stress in the form of butcher knives and guns, now, would we? x__x;;;

i tink smoking shld be banned in public places so tt there will be fewer passive smokers..
but i dunno lehz.. cuz there is this guy who lives below me and he will definitely smoke at around 9pm daily den the smoke will come into my room and my sis and i will suffer... i realise my friends also have similar experiences as me..
however i dun tink the govt can totally ban smoking cuz somehow those who wanna smoke will still manage to get their hands on cigarette.. juz like tt time spore banned chewing gum but there are singaporeans who go to malayasia to buy chewing gum and bring them back to spore secretly.. so this kinda ting it's hard to ban totally..

smoking shouldn't be banned. it will only create black markets for cigarette, and these money will fall into the wrong hands. you rather just have the government taxing it a lot (like it is already) and let the money go there (plus retail stores that sells them).

YES!!! I agree that smoking should be banned. Firstly, it has been proven countless times that smoking harms your body - causes cancer in lungs, throat, nose etc etc causes your arteries to clog up, causes blood clotting in brain leading to stroke. Furthermore, there is also ample evidence that smoking also harms those around you who breathe in all the second hand smoke.
Some people claims that smoking relieves their stress and stuff. Personally, I believe that there are other more healthier ways to relieve stress. I believe that it will be extreme to ban smoking definitely. The government should take small steps to reduce the number of smokers. Like declaring more smoke free zones etc or educating the public on the effects of smoking or even provide help to those who want to quit smoking.
People also claims that smoking gives them the good feeling but have they ever consider the good feeling comes at what price? Every good feeling that they achieve from a cigarette or a puff injects more toxics into their body. Right now, they can claim that there are pros and cons to smoking but when they really fall ill with cancer or strokes then will they still think that smoking is good in some ways.
yes it should be banned. i cant stand the smoke and it is a health hazard. i dun care if smokers want to smoke all they want, but at the same time, they also cause non-smokers to suffer the effects of 2nd hand smoke. even if they feel that smoking is a way to de-stress, i am sure there are many ways to de-stress w/o harming themselves and others.

smoking should be banned.
You will die if you smoke...
people will die if they breathe in the smoke.
everyone will die in the end
SO WHY SMOKE?
5 reason why smoking should be banned
1. it kills
2.it kills
3.it kills
4. it kills
5. it kills.
NZ has banned smoking in bars and restaurants...
thats one step up for NZ!
Go NZers!
we can now breathe free.......fresh....and......clean air...
and LIVE!~
*hahaha....but the now the bar tenders and people are smelling the body odour, farts, burping and toe jam....the smoke used to cover up *^^* *

everyone dies in the end girl... ;;>.>
anywayz~ i think smoking should be banned...!! >.< simply 'cuz i can't control myself, so the governmental system should control my bad habit.
if ya still don't get it, i'm a smoker that needs to quit through some sort of outside force. ;p
even though i totally agree wif banning smoking as the only thing it does is kills u.. but u still cant take away the free will of the ppl who choose to smoke...in melbourne, they have banned smoking indoors (restaurants, bars etc.) and i think that it is one of the best things the government has ever done. i dont think smoking will ever be completely banned as u cannot force smokers to kick their habit. however, governments should make sure non smoker should not suffer the ill effects of smokers.

i dont think it should be banned, cos it's not very harmful, cos if it is, the government will ban it wont they? anyways it's not harmful if you just smoke it when you're depressed and stuff. and long time ago, native americans smoke in festivals, and they all sat in a circle and just puffed, and they lived to an old age. cos my grandma smoked heavily when my grandpa got shot, and she stopped, and she' still an old healthy grandma :-)

smoking should be banned.
You will die if you smoke...
people will die if they breathe in the smoke.
everyone will die in the end
SO WHY SMOKE?
5 reason why smoking should be banned
1. it kills
2.it kills
3.it kills
4. it kills
5. it kills.
NZ has banned smoking in bars and restaurants...
thats one step up for NZ!
Go NZers!
we can now breathe free.......fresh....and......clean air...
and LIVE!~
*hahaha....but the now the bar tenders and people are smelling the body odour, farts, burping and toe jam....the smoke used to cover up *^^* *
I know your reasons are obvious however, don't forget the number one thing about a cigarette is nicotine, an addictive chemical so, sometimes people can't even quit.
I'm totally against smoking but, I can understand when people tell me how hard it is to quit or cut down on cigarettes.

I wish I could say that smoking should be allowed so we can weed out the idiots who want to die, but my dad smokes, and there's a lot of other people in my extended family who smoke too. One of my uncles in Taiwan was diagnosed with lung cancer last year, but I don't really care that much. I never met him.
But my dad goes through a pack a day. I'm worried about that.
Hell.

Smoking should be banned, as it does more harm than good. (ie: kills a huge percentage of those who smoke it, but provides money for the poor countries that grow the tobacco in the first place) Better people hating the government (wouldn't be a big shock to them anyway) than learning that it's bad the hard way.
My dad used to smoke, and I worried a whole heap about him, but now he's quit, and I can only hope all those years of smoking didn't do him too much damage.

i don't think it should be banned. yes it's disgusting and hazardous to the smoker's health and the environment, but then, so is driving. i think tobacco smoking is something so firmly ingrained in modern societies all over the world that it would be impossible to eradicate it completely. and besides, even if a government somewhere wanted to try to get rid of it, i can guarantee you that regardless of the country that took place in there would be some kind of riot or revolt. i personally find it to be a filthy habit and i only wish everyone would stop - but that's just me. i've met quite a few smokers who were very very good people. my uncle smokes too. so yes it's gross, but it shouldn't be banned completely - only in public areas so it won't cause discomfort to others.
I think it should be banned as it does more harm than good. People get addicted to this drug and it makes their health plummet. There are other ways to destress yourself..no need to turn to smoking.
Smokers smell after they have had a puff, and I can't stand the smell.
Smoking kills and it wastes money...so why do it?

I’m against smoking too. I hate the smell they had on them after smoking and I hate the cigarettes’ smell.
I always tried to avoid smokers’ places and areas. An order of air unpolluted by cigarettes’ smell, thank you very much.
argghhh they should pass a law that makes every packet of cigarette a million dollars!!!!!!!!! i hate smoking!!! it's a gross habit and harms people (not JUST the people who smoke).... How can ppl not think it does harm?? There are other ways to relieve your stress!! Think about what you're doing to your body!!!
but in all seriousness, we cant just ban it and expect ppl to stop. EDUCATION is obviously very important...especially if ppl think it's okay to smoke...=S and support systems in place for them to help them quit... But yeh, things arent that simple... =(
i've met quite a few smokers who were very very good people. my uncle smokes too.
uhhhhhh...yeh of course. just coz ppl smoke that doesnt mean they're bad ppl....it's just a bad habit.
speaking of bad habits..i should stop biting my nails.

I agreed that smoking should be banned. :shy:
People always smoke and pollute the earth. When they smoke, i always breathe in the smoke (which i hate). I dislike to be a second handsmoker, its saids that a second handsmoker is even worst then the person who is smoking .
I really dislike smokers! why can't they take care of their health?

People always smoke and pollute the earth?
i think this is the best reason to ban smoking!!now the temperature of the earth is getting warmer and warmer because of the depletion of ozone layer which comes about because of air pollution.
thus smoking is indirectly harming our own habitat and has to be stopped!
2nd hand smoking is also no good.why cant the smokers be more considerate a little?
if they do not bother about their own health..they should at least care about others' health right? :worry:

I'm afraid to say yes.
I'm an occasional smoker but I suggest that smoking must be banned.
I'm aware of the hazard it brings not only to the health of the smoker,
but more so to the non-smokers who happen to be passive victims.

YES! It's so harmful to second-hand smokers and to them too. It's also harmful to the air. It's polluting it and pratically destroying the earth. I personally can't stand smokers. The smoke they exhale is so disgusting.
I'm glad for those smokers who are making an effort to quit, but the others are just exiting mounds of flesh. -_-

I'm asthmatic. What do you think I'm gonna say?
I cannot count the amount of times I've almost died because of a damn smoker.
Cough once doesn't help.
Cough twice doesn't help.
When the inhaler pulls out they still don't notice. One thing I've learned to do is to walk in front of a smoker and cough my lungs out and wait for my asthma attack to come. My inhaler is always in hand.
Dangerous sometimes, yes. However! It gets the point across!

i don't think it should be banned. yes, smoking is bad for someone's health. but life choices are not up to the government to decide. smoking is bad for the smokers body... but so is being unfit or obese... heart disease from unfitness is more prominent than lung cancer anything from smoking...
so i suppose the main concern is that smokin affects other people... well, then the governemnt should start placing limits on smoking like allowing smoking only in certain areas and/or placing extra taxes.
and seaweedpatchkid, if ur sooo concerned for your life, then don't kill urself to get the smoker's attention. just tell them. what's so hard about that?

I have told smokers before. They just look at me funny. It pisses me off. I figure it I almost die in front of them they don't do it in that place anymore. I work the guilt.
Anyway. I haven't done it years anyhow. My asthma has been getting out of control a lot since last year and I can't even swim without my inhaler.

Yes!!!! It should be banned! Totally agree with that. I hate smoke so much, stinks. Sometimes smokers just don't care... when ever they feel want to smoke, they just some & don't care about others. The worst thing is even in full air conditioning room, they do smoke! Second hand smokers suffer the most than the first hand smokers.

Well.. I agree it should be banned...
Reason
1. It causes air pollution. Nowadays, the air is becoming so thick.. so hazy... It affects the nations world-wide... I hate it!!
2. I hate smoky smells.. stinks!!!!
3. I will suffocate under such smoky conditions!!! Whenever I saw anyone smoking on streets.. I will stop breathing for a few seconds until when the smokers is about one or two metres away from me.
4. Smoking smoils people's lungs... It's not good for health!
5. Cigarettes are too expensive!!! (And that's why the governments still have not banned smoking...)

Sorry too lazy to back read everyone's posts heheh. In New Zealand theres a law which was enforced late last year (I think?) that smoking is now banned in all bars and restaurants! And well shopping centres and shops ban them anyway, so its smokefree everywhere here! Its great! Especially if you go into a pub, you know you're not gona come out in the end smelling like an ashtray! Only problem is that you get lots of ciggy butts everywhere on the footpaths and roads

But then again, I don't smoke.. so I'm sure if I did, then I would find it kind of insulting...

I guess I'm one of the few people who think that smoking shouldn't be banned, so I hope I don't get totally ripped a new one. I'm a smoker and have been for years. I do know that it's bad for my health and everything else that those annoying "Truth" commercials billow out. But like someone else said before, if I know it's bad why do I do it, because I want to. I don't condone it for others because I do know it's bad. But I don't think that they'll ever ban tobacco entirely, it'd be as fruitless as Prohibition. And though I'm a little late, Happy 420 everyone.

im with you too, even tho im only a "social smoker"... i mean we should all be given the choice to decide for ourselves. Yeah it's bad for ur health but i mean look at Sir Winston Churchill, that guy pretty much chain smoked his whole life and he lived to 88 i think. So yeah live HARD, die YOUNG! jk
A good debate topic!
Well, if smoking were to be banned, it would bring great benefits to all of us. The air would not be so polluted and those innocent ones would not get diseases just because of one of their family members smoking. And therefore, improve our health at the same time.
However, if smoking were to be banned, I think more and more people would smuggle cigarettes and open up black markets because they would be valuable if smoking were to be banned. Some more, these people would still smoke secretly.
But if the law is really tough, banning of smoking is still possible. I really hope that one day there would be no such thing as smoking. Seeing smokers really annoys me. They're just inconsiderate, causing harm to innocent people like their family members.

Well i wish we can banned all the smokers. They can bring other people who are not smoking get cancer just because this people inhale the smoke from the cigarretes :ranting: I hate those smokers specially if they smoke everywhere not realize there is a baby or other people who dislike the smoke  if they get banned we will ahve a better air for damn sure.
But in the other hand..just like my country, we got the revenue's from cigarettes. The governement earn lots of money from the tax they given to it. So i think it's very impossible to ban smokers in my country  cos we will lose a great amount of revenue if we banned it.

this is a great topic for discussion!
there was once when i went out to town with my friends.. there was this guy who walked in front of my friend and blew cigarette smoke right into her face.. he jus walked away after that.. thinking that its real cool or something.. all of us got really angry after that.. :profanit:
however, i suppose we can't possibly eradicate smoking entirely, because its just like how we can never stop gambling and other bad habits.. but its still possible to ban smoking in certain places like shopping malls, pubs, etc..
i think that smoking should be banned altogether because when smokers smoke, theyre harming themselves and the people around them. however, i dont think that smoking will be banned because seeing as i live in canada, the government charges heavy taxes on cigrettes and the government would not want to lose money by banning the sell of cigrarettes into the country. nowadays, everything is about money and the world revolves around money, if only the government would stop thinking about money and start looking at the bigger picture. if they dont stop people from smoking, theyll need to use all those tax dollars to help the smokers when they are diagnosed with lung cancer, so wats the point of collecting all that tax money if theyre jus gonna have to use it to help the smokers in the end?...i dont see the logic in it...

I am the first to protest smoking and the proclaim its detriments.
And while it is true that smoking does affect the others around you, I don't think that it will be banned or if anyone really has the power to really ban it, at least not here in the US.
It's just not going to happen. Smoking is an addicting pastime, and although it certainly causes horrible diseases (lung cancer, emphysema), it cannot be grouped with the "illegal drugs" (things like cocaine, etc) and the widespread smoking is just too hard to stop.
Sad, but true.

Smoking should be definitely banned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My dad used to smoke a lot, but he quit after getting a respiratory problem. I think that I have acquired some kind of allergy toward the smoke of cigarrete. Every time that I smell it i cough heavily as if I were trying to take all the smoke out from my body... It makes me sick... How I hate those people smoking on the streets and all the smoke just run in your face. Once I was walking to the subway station and there was this guy who was smoking a few feet in front of me, and all the smoke went directly to my nose >.< I tried not to breathe for some seconds until all the smoke was gone, but i knew it wouldn't last long, so i walked faster than him to get rid of his horrible smoke. I didn't want to be there when the second round of smoke came.
My boyfriend used to smoke a lot too. But since he's with me, he's been smoking much less than before because he knows i can't stand the smell. i've had so many arguments with him about this matter, but it's very difficult for him to quit at once. Well, at least he's trying to smoke less... Hope he realizes that I'm telling him all this just for his good and because i love him so much that i don't want him to die just because of a stupid cigarrette.

In the US, taxes account for more than 95% of the cost of cigs. The actual cost of production for a pack is only around 20 cents ~ the other $4.75 is from state and federal taxes.
If you look at the stats ~ in Asia, more than half of the guys surveyed smoked, compaired to about a fourth in western countries. Then again, less than ten percent of asian girls smoked, compaired to about twenty five percent in western countries.
It's all about motivation ~ and yes, it makes it a lot easier to quit smoking if your girlfriend doesn't want you to.

IT'S A MUST!! SMOKING MUST BE BANNED!! I THINK SMOKING SHOULD BE BANNED EVERYWHERE!!
Smoking does harm to the smoker and to the suffering humans around the smoker. I'm telling you, smoking does harm and I mean only harm to everyone around.
In the UK over 150 million innocent humans pass away from smoking related illnesses. That's 150 million people that die from the stupid cigarettes that do nothing but harm everyone.
I feel strongly about smokers (You can see me shouting on the first sentence of my post) and I think that the person that invented the cigarette just caused disaster to all humans - not happiness to anyone.
I think, If you smoke or know someone that smokes, tell yourself or tell the other person to QUIT NOW!
Don't just take it outside, QUIT NOW!

Hmm. They don't spare a thought for us when they stick their cigarettes in our face and blow their fumes in our direction coz they don't want to blow it towards their friends/ family. It's foul especially when someone's eating and you find yourself beside some smokers.
If we can't bring smoking to be banned, every location on earth should segregate the Smoking and Non-Smoking Areas so at least we know what we're letting ourselves into.

Banning it is stupid right now... all that'll do is jack up cigarette prices underground, and besides, like it or not, tobacco is a huge part of the economy.
What they can do is start bottlenecking it and gradually phase it out.
I have no idea how they'd do that though.

dunno abt in the US but here in AUS they try to discourage ppl from smoking by advertising health issues caused by smoking on TV... i dunno how effective they are tho
AUS also impose a high tax on cigarettes so the consumer ends up paying alot more for cigarettes than they used to. this might help to discourage young smokers from taking it up as it'll b difficult for them to afford the addiction

The government gets money from smokers.
Tobacco industry is huuuuge.
And this reminds me of a book by John Grisham called "The Runaway Jury" It's mostly about tampering with the Jury, but the case they were doing was that is the tobacco industry responsible for the death of a smoker.
I read it a long time ago. The final verdict was yes, they were. The widow of the smoker got miiilions from the tobacco company.

in my opinion, i think it should..i know that people smoke for reasons..but at the same time when you smoke you are also hurting that people that are around you that breath that air...and there are so many dangerous things that can happen when you smoke..like my dad is a smoker..and all..really dislike it..but i cannot do anything about it..but at least he doesnt smoke around me or in the house..and especially here in las vegas i really think it should..there are so many smokers at the casinos and all..we go to casinos sometimes to have dinner and all..and i dont think having to breath air that is bad is something that i would enjoy having around..and it is also hard for people that have asthma to be around bad air..
but at the same time i think if they ban it in some places..there are still possiblilties that they will do it illegally..with nicotine and all so popular..it would be so hard to let someone all of a sudden quit..cause it is the truth,,quiting is not that easy for people that have smoked all their life and all..

In Singapore, our government imposed high taxes on cigarettes. $5.50 has risen to $11.00 in less than 5 years. They set up an anti smoking campaign more of propaganda imo. eg. everypuff is a handcuff. They print all the cigarette packs with disgusting pictures. Smoking area is limited in coffeeshops in Singapore in the near future. Finally, clean air for me. I love them doing that. Smoking should be banned although it brings money for the economy doesn't do any benefits socially.

In my opinion, smoking should be banned and i have my own reasons behind it. I can't deny that smoking is enjoyable to the smokers(although i did not dare to try it) but did they spare a thought for the non-smokers(not forgetting me)? I bet there are more non-smokers than smokers around the world. Will it do good to us? No right? Instead it do more harm. Smoking do pollute the air and often cigarettes are been abused by the smokers. It can also be addictive if you are not careful. So i am taking this chance to encourage smokers to quit smoking and turn over a new leaf. Take my advice and you will benefit from it.

Yes smoking IS bad for the body. and maybe it SHOULD be banned.
but i think it would actually be hard to ban something like smoking.
Because there are already vast populations of people ALL Over the world who are smokers.. and they aren't just going to quit like that because of a law or something. Banning smoking would only cause more problems. Because if smoking becomes illeagal, people will be smuggling ciggarettes and there will be more crime.. if you get my drift.
also, riots may be caused. it's not easy for smokers to quit
so my overall conclusion is that..
smoking, even though VERY bad for health, should NOT be banned. because it would cause more problems..
if people want to continue smoking then LET them smoke and DIE...
the world IS overpopluated right??

Smoking definately should be banned, I'm sure everyone knows how bad it is. For ppl who already started smoking and could not stop, they could at least lower down the amount of intake, and slowly stop it. These things take time. My great-uncle almost lost his life to his habit of smoking some time ago. His lungs are beyond the point of curable... he's still hanging on. I don't want this to happen to other ppl. It's all very sad, almost every smoker regrets smoking at some point of your life.
So, never start smoking. If you do, you'll find it hard to stop.

I would most difinitely think that smoking must be banned! Everyone around you smoking and throwing those buds everywhere on the floor, littering every nooks and corners. And some of them has this bad habit of spitting on the floor everytime they finish smoking the ciggarate. That's so disgusting and is dirtying the environment. And it wouldn't looks good to let a foreigner to see such things happening in Malaysia. Well, I'm not very sure other country does such awful things. But I'm very sure here, Malaysia, does it.
Moreover, people who breathes in the second hand smoke is killing! We die faster than them who smokes. Even if smoking can't be banned. They should be shifted to an island and smoke all they want.
[No offence to smokers] But I seriously hate people who smokes!

i am definitely for the idea of banning smoking. i see no goodness in picking up this smoking habit so i just fathom why do people insist on smoking.anyway, in today's newspaper, singapore and many other countries are coming together to implement the banning of tobacco in their countries!this is just a formidable task but i do hope they succeed.its seems impossible..i cant imagine those who have been relying on smoking for years can adapt to this..there may be adverse affects but i hope this will be successful nonetheless, for the good of the people's health, the country but most importantly, for the good of the younger generations who are often regard as the future leaders of the countries!

Maybe can assigned certain places for them to smoke and not in the public??
So non smokers will not have to take in the second hand smoke..

You can argue that you have a right to do whatever you want, but when your actions infringe on the health and well-being of another human being, your rights end there. That is the basic guiding principle of human rights legislation in the last few hundred years. Second-hand smoke kills :-x . My hometown has banned smoking in all public places. Leaving it only legal outside (30ft from the entrance of any building), in your own home, and in your car. Gogin out is great now, not having to worry about being inhaling toxic chemicals. I say ban it.
If anything, it keeps me from forcibly making you stop while you attempt to light up around my pregnant wife. :-x

Yes, I really think smoking should be banned and FOREVER . I have lot of reason for it so I'll explain it slowly :wink2:.
1. Cancer : Smoking a lot, causes cancer to most of the people in the world . My grandpa died by lung cancer (of smoking).
2. Makes the lungs get and look all ugly and black.
3. It's too adictive so it's really hard to stop smoking ocne you get into it.
4. Makes me mad cause my dad had promised me that he would stop smoking like a billion years ago and he never did , that reminds me, before we made a bet that if doesn't stop smoking he would have to make 100 push-ups and he never did :rasp:, plus I'm sure he'll never be able to, now that he won't have a lot of breathing resistance .
5. Makes people have less breathing resistance, and that would be really bad for those sports player :glug:.
6. Costs a lot of money :worry:.
7. Gives to some teenager a bad habit that they think smoking makes them cool , and I've experienced that when I went to summer vacation in China . Lucky over here in U.S. they need to be 18 and older and have a i.d. card to buy it :wink2:.
8. It stinks and smells really bad. Sometimes it even sufficates me with all the smoke in 1 room or car .

It should be banned in public areas where a lot of the public are. I've been to parramatta and it is a site to behold. Travelling at night could also be dangerous. After a concert night I was walking to the train station and at least every second person I passed were some sort of a hobo or a smoker. Scary thought, but it was the truth. Even travelling in the day for me was difficult. Smokers were everywhere and unavoidable. So bad in fact, that if I shop there or at least travel there everyday I think I'd die of passive smoking. Especially for me I can't stand smokers. xD

i dont think smokin should be band, but they should really reinforce those under 18 cant smoke laws. i mean after school, i go to the library, and there's a BUNCH of people from my school just sittin there smoking.
the smell is horrible too, every time i see a smoker, i just cover my nose, i make sure the smoker sees me too. to let em know that it stinks :)
there was this study conducted, that estimated that asian men especially were more likely to smoke, than any other ethnicities. that's kinda scary, but i think it's true, alot koreans n chinese people smoke in my school

Smoking should be ban. However, I feel that it is not possible in current society where people have the freedom and rights to make their own decision. Even if the government iomplement the ban smoking laws, the people will still find ways to get a puff on the cigerattes.
Generally, I dislike smokers due to the smell of the cigerattes. I't horrible + I've got asthma and is quite sensitive to these stuff. In addition, I had seen both my grandads suffering from lung problems due to excessive smoking. Both got admitted to ICU and stayed there for about 3 weeks.
To ban smoking, many laws, counselling centres and helplines have to be set up to answers to the queries of the customers. In addition, there will be the huge protests from the smokers which I feel that many countries are not ready to take the challenges.

i say that smoking should be ban forever and that people should look at smoking is a way of taking drugs. drugs that should be illegal. i hope people would one day see this as the way i do and ban smoking forever. smoking doesn't make you look cool or feel good. it could make you feel good, but does it make you feel good forever after taking one. no you would have to take thousands or even millions before you feel good and die.

no. i dont think that smoking should be banned...
becauseee all the smokers i think would be very angry about this decision,, and maybe get angey over it, and use violence to gain back the right to smoke. people would be depressed, and need lots of therapy to be able to crontrol the nicotine cravings.
i dont think it is a very good idea personally.
and i dont mind the smell of smoke. it doesnt really do much to us if we are not in it that much. it only becomes a problem if there is no smoking policy in public closed areas, such as shopping centers, workplaces, cafes and rooms should be allocated in nightclubs.
well, thats my view on it.

From a tabacco's company and those related to it point of view, no. Smoking should not be ban.
But for someone who do not smoke and hates it when people blow the smoke into her face, yes. Ban it and make the world a cleaner place. ;)

smoking should definitly be banned, because it'll damage your health, and other people health. Also, the smell always make me sick and give me a big headache. Another thing is that banning smoking is for the smoker own benefit, since they'll save money by not buying any more cigarettes and have cheaper life insurance, etc... One reason that i like hong kong is that they banned smoking so long ago like in 1998 or 99.

In my opinion, smoking should be banned, or at least prohibit smoking in public areas. I just cant stand the smell of it. Correct me if i'm wrong, from what i see in china, you can basically smoke everywhere, even in air conditioned restaurants. I dunno about other countries, but here in my country, you cant smoke in air conditioned restaurants. And from what i read, second hand smokers are more likely to get lung cancer. Althought it's impossible to get rid of the habit, smokers should at least lessen their daily packets of cigarretes. I've heard some smokers taking up to 10 packets a day. When i was holidaying with a tour group, there was this guy who smokes like his life depended on it.

Where i live, which is america, drugs in particular are illegal and banned in general besides the fact that cigarettes are not and they are issued by prescription. but in general, completely ALL drugs should be banned, but that just creates more issues. That gives more props to those that smuggle drugs into the country such as weed or heorin. For myself, i ****in hate those drug sellers, including the simple cigarette. My reason is that my grandfather smokes it everyday and all that the family does is worry and worry about his health. Fortunately Grandma got him to quit, but why would anyone start, theres no long term positive side. i mean screw being noticed, its going to KILL/deteriorate you.

I hate smoking as well, but I don't think it should necessarily be banned...then the number of crimes would SKYROCKET. And can you imagine people being fined thousands of dollars for smoking?? It's their choice...let them slowly kill themselves by poisoning their lungs with tar...and they'll pay for their poor judgement later in life. In the meantime, EVERYONE should make laws like California/US!! That's where smoking is outlawed in public places and you can even get fined if your smoke is excessive in apartment buildings. I can say that I can definitely tell the difference in the air when I go out to eat here in California as compared to in France where I feel like I'm suffocating while eating lunch -_-.
Smoking should definitely be banned no matter where it is... Not only is it bad for your own health but it also endangers the lives of your love ones.
Spare a thought for them and all the smokers out there should quit smoking starting from NOW!

wow i agree...
but why do you say that by banning smoking, the number of crimes will skyrocket???? it is because people smoke to destress.. and if they are too stressed they will commit crimes like rape, theft... etc???
but i think you're right... smoking should be banned in public areas... there is already so much carbon monoxide (CO) in the air surrounding the public roads.. by adding cigarette smoke... the place becomes so hazy..
really cannot stand the cigarette smoke.. should be banned in confined areas.

banned? uhmm, those who are doing the cigarettes business will have to be ready to get bancrupt then.
anyway, we ALL know tht smoking has many negative effects, for instance lung, kidney cancer, heart attack, and also it effects our immune system too. ALso, smokers tend to spend more money on cigarettes. and that is bad.
Besides that, non-smokers get to breathe in the tobacco smoke and that is whn passive smoking or second-hand smoke occurs.
there are just too many negative points , therefore, i personally think smoking should be banned, as i don't think campaigns to create awareness are working out well, increasing the cigarette's price does not help either.
there is nothing good about smoking anyway, having good health is much more important ! ^.^

Yeap, I think they should banned smoking. They are just polluting the air outside(no offend).
In Singapore, I can find some bus stop with the non-smokings sign. Fine $1000 somemore.
But if to those who are realli addicted to smoking. I think its will be difficult for them to ban themself from smoking.
I don't have anything against smoking per se. I mean, if smokers want to go kill themselves by filling their lungs with tar, please go ahead. It's got nothing to do with me.
But what I really hate it inconsideration by smokers. Go ahead and smoke all you want but at least, have the decency to not smoke in a very crowded area where your second hand smoke will annoy the non-smokers sitting around you. You have a right to smoke but hey, non-smokers have equal rights NOT to inhale your smelly second hand smoke as well !
On a related note, I really hate it when I'm walking on the pavement and some smoker in front of me is puffing away, while the second hand smoke get blown right into my face. Man, that *reallllly* pisses me off :ranting:

NO smoking should NOT BE BANNED. People should be allowed to make their own decisions concerning their life (now - smoking in public is another matter/family, w/e). Still ~ if they want to kill themselves, let them do it! Suicide should be legal! Well, when you think about it, successfull suicide, you won't care; unsuccessful means you really didn't want to kill yourself. *shrugs* Seriously ~ wtf is with that? Growing old and losing control and slowly wasting away - pooping yourself when you laugh. It's SICK. I would rather die before getting that wasted ~ it's not even like you're really living, only through some cheap farce. So if I can kill myself to prevent myself from getting disgustingly old and incompetant (there is a certain point you pass you know, don't deny it - when you become a waste on EVERYTHING but still are alive), then people should be allowed to fuck up their own lives all they want, and smoke - giving themselves slow death. If you say "no, we shouldn't let them", who the fuck are you to decide that? I'm confused - you're saying you can judge their competance? Decide what's best for them? You don't even KNOW them! It's like in the movie "one flew over the cuckoo's nest", where the nurses at the mental hospital give wack meds to people who don't need it - and lobotomize a guy just cause they feel it's in his best interest. Thank God the Indian Guy killed him. In conclusion ~ you dont have the right to decide for other people's lives: choice is what defines living, if you deny that, you deny life. If it hurts other people ~ yeah, you can limit their actions to a certain extent, but their wn life? No, that's just sadistic. Stupid assclowns~
No sleep in 48 hours makes rants EASY.

Similar to KendoTiger, I believe that smoking should NOT be banned. It's your decision to do what you wish, and if that involves hurting yourself, that's fine with me. And on the bright side, this gives millions of people jobs. The only reason the government HASN'T made tobacco an illegal substance (like marijuana) is because it turns too much of a profit and is great to tax.
It doesn't affect you, so don't bother. If you get to a stoplight and someone is smoking, deal with it. It isn't as bad as say, indian food (no offense, but those are some strong smells there) and it's not like EVERY stoplight has one person smoking. Second-hand smoke only kills if it's constant. Once in a while isn't as dangerous.
And if anything, just hold your breath.

but we must keep in mind that even though its banned there will be some people who are going to use them anyway!..like drugs, thats banned but i think everyone of us knows someone who uses them..i know i can definately think of at least one...(NOT me, dont worry :D)
i think the best way to help the environment/people who smoke/everything is just to educate people. by making it illegal some people might even want it more cuz you always want what you cant have.
by making it legal, at least you can monitor what goes in it and haf a standard. like with drugs, you make be taking some rat killers, bleach, whatever..there's no telling whats inside. i'd rather they have at least some standard.

I think we should only ban them in public places. It would probably be extremely hard to completely ban smoking so i think the best solution would be to tax smokers a lot. =) we get more money AND money is a huge incentive to stop smoking. in the long run, the smoker may also end up quitting so this seems to be a win-win situation!

to ban is a powerful action. you can ban smoking in public places but cigarette smoke will still affect the people around the smokers.
Also you can't just make up a law about banning cigarettes. there are ways for smokers to go aroudn those rules. inside cigarettes, theres additives in it like tobacco and nicotine which makes it addictive. a long time ago when cigarettes got big, they didnt know all the shit that comes from them. smoking was looked as the right thing to do. many years later ( present time) they know all the harmful chemicals and effects. so now people are aware of it and and number of smokers have decreased. but it would be harder for older people to quit. In a sense its not ur fault for smoking....... unless ur the dumbass who smokes even tho u know the side effects and is doing it to look cool.
there should be a law on banning smoking to some degree, because it isnt fair to the surrounding people. infact secondhand smokers get more effected by the tar and carbon minoxide than the smokers. talk about selfish. so yes, smoking should be banned only because its hurting innocent people

I wouldn't go as far as banning smoking completely but in a perfect world, that'll be great. I think banning smoking in restaurants is a great step.
I think there's great psychological and mental problem with people who smoke. Because cigarrettes do not kill you instantly, it takes years and years, people don't really realize that they're harming themselves, so they think it's okay. Also, there was this experiment which tested little kids, age 5-7. The experimental gathered like 50 children into a room, and each of them were given a cookie. The experimenter told them, they could eat the cookies if they want, but if they wait until he comes back, then they would get two cookies. So he left, and watched the kids who just grabbed the cookies into their mouths and those who patiently waited. It was a long term study, like 20+ years. They've found out that kids who didn't have the patience, just couldn't wait until the experimenter come back, are at a higher risk to becoming criminals, and people who have unstable lives.
Yah..that's about it.

I HATE it when people smoke..= =. Its filling the lungs of lil kids. And ruining..practically everybody. I always tell my dad to quit smoking, but he never listens...
i agree with most people that smoking should be banned. There's actually a petition going around at my university trying to ban it, but I don't think it'll work because of how many smokers there are. What's worse is that all the smokers stand right outside the entrances to almost every building on campus, it's like impossible to avoid them. They should at least stand a bit aways so that other people can pass without having to inhale the stuff >:[

i took a trip to china during the winter and once i walked out of the airport at beijing i was blasted by the air, practically EVERYBODY was smoking. all my relatives in china smoked, my dad used to smoke before he came to america, hell, even our tour guides smoked. coming back to america was such a relief, i am now appreciating our fresh air, i get happy just seeing no smoking signs =P
but its hard for people to stop smoking, and so banning it would probably never happen because companies make so much profit, and its really our decision whether or not to smoke so we can't sue on that. but its a nice thought

YEs, i think it should because ..Its bad for you heath...But i dont know why people do it..It smell bad..I hate it...I dont like second hand smoke eaither! It should be ban..Everyone should stop selling them! I think people who sell it just wants to get money..Now and days they sell it for 30.00 here
I think it should be banned from all those public places, because i really cannot stand it when I'm waiting for a bus, and someone keeps puffing smoke into my hair and my hair will stink of cigar smoke later !
when i went on holiday 2 years ago to Spain, i realised they had smoking/non-smoking mrt cabins, air-cond enclosed cabin for non-smokers at bus stops who the smokers will stand outside.. its like smoking is not banned, but not totally ostracised either. by restricitng people to certain places to smoke freely (sounds ironic !), everyone would be happy and there will be less complaints !
and oh yar, its difficult to make someone quit smoking, but maybe we should tell them try to reduce the no. of sticks/day slowly.. and chew nicotine gums maybe?

Yes, i think it should be banned. Many people who did not smoke get lungs cancer because of the smokers. And also, non-smokers have higher chances of getting cancer than those smokers. Which i think it is unfair. By banning smoking, the number of people with lungs cancer would decrease.

i'm not a smoker, but i don't see a need for a complete ban on them especially since in some places they're already banned indoors. so the smokers are already relegated to doing it outdoors. besides i do know people who are smokers and they're not bad persons because they happen to have this habit. you may chew gum. you bite your nails. they happen to choose to smoke. they already know the consequences of health. already thru gradual education - as smoking becomes less acceptable, the numbers of smokers will decrease subsequently.

I'm taking a medical sociology class right now, and we've just discussed smoking.
The teacher gave this example:
You take your family out to the movie theatre to watch a movie. As you sit in the dark theatre, a man comes and sits by your daughter. He pulls out a needle and is about to inject himself with heroin, but he's obviously a bit edgy and out of it. He misses and injects your daughter. She now is overdosed with heroin and may even have AIDS. Later, she dies from these complications.
What is the difference between this example and second hand smoke? The difference is that second hand smoke kills 3000 people a year. How many people die from being stuck by someone else's heroin needle a year? Zero?
There is also the idea of the hierarchy of rights.
My right to pollutionless air is greater than your right to smoke.
One last statistic. It costs the US government about $7.18 per pack of cigarettes in tax dollars. Half of that is medical costs, and half of it is lost productivity. That's also about twice as much as a pack of cigs cost.

hmmm.....it should only be banned in PUBLIC places. people can do watever they want with their lungs, but they hav to understand that they are doing damage to their bodies. if they smoke in public, it also affects other people in their surrounding, and they hav to take in 2nd hand smoke.
princessKitty

My right to pollutionless air is greater than your right to smoke.
I agree with you on this totally. I breathe enough pollution, I don't need to breathe in anymore of it. Ok fine, smokers choose to smoke, that's their choice to damage their health and body but it is not right to take that away from non-smokers.
I understand that businesses will not be as good but it will do the envrionment and the people good. It will encourage smokers to quit because there is less places for them to smoke. My dad quit smoking because of three factors:
1) His dentist said if he carried on smoking, his teeth will rot
2) He works in the kitchen as a chef and he is not allowed to smoke in there
3) His got kids at home
If smokers had reasons like my dad, then it would encourage them more to stop smoking. I think banning smoking in public places is one contributing factor in helping them to stop. It may cause them to get addicted more to it but that is normal because the body is asking for it when the nicotine is working on the lungs. Therefore, it trains the body to stop the addiction if you were in a public place. It takes great effort to stop smoking, I don't know what it feels like but I can understand how hard it can be to stop something that you are so addicted to.
Another positive point into why smoking should be banned is that young people or those who gets influenced or peered pressure will see less people holding a stick in their hand. Smoking often is glamourised on T.V and when people especially young ones sees it, they would want to copy because they think it's fashionable to do it. There are many ways into looking cool and fashionable, smoking is not one of them. So if a non-smoker goes into a restuarant or a pub, the chance of them seeing a smoker and copying them is low. It wouldn't make a big difference but it will help.
Bottom line though, smoking IS bad, smokers and non-smokers realise that. Banning smoking in public places is a positive thing to the environment. It will benefit non-smokers and especially to smokers.

Very well said princess kitty. At least, smoking in public places should be banned. We all have rights but these rights end when you are already stepping other people's rights.
I will deem second-hand smoke as more harmful than other poisons. You can still get an antidote to immediately counteract the poison; but with second-hand smoke, you're getting killed slowly without you knowing it. And when you will finally discover it, it's too late.
I really hope that the government will launch programs to increase awareness to second-hand smoke. I'm quite sure that the mafias will try to block this but with determination, the government will surely manage to do it. Educating people will play a vital role in eradicating this problem. And it will make smokers aware of the kind of threat they are with people that they love the most.

Well the Aussie Government has put up ALOT of very Visual ads on TV..
I guess that smoking SHOULD be banned.
Not meaning that it WILL be anytime soon.
For one i guess alot of people are harmed by the effects of smoking.. Especially passive smoking. Passive smoking is more dangerous then normal smoking.
People take in the smoke without a Ciggerette filter.
I guess that alot of peoples attitude is "Gotta Die of Something"
Thats what my friend says when i tell him smokings not good
