Chou's concert proves popular, Taiwanese pop star sells out the Shrine

Source: sgvtribune news

INDUSTRY -- Taiwanese pop star Jay Chou promised on Friday an exciting show for fans at his sold-out concert tonight, which drew 6,400 ticket-buyers, mainly local Chinese-American fans of his rhythm and blues stylings.
"I hope I can bring happiness to the audience here,' the 25-year-old superstar said in his native Mandarin at a news conference in the Pacific Palms Conference Resort in Industry.

Chou said his concert at the Shrine Auditorium will not feature his usual fireworks show and flying special effects, because the venue is too small for him to wear a harness of wires that lets him drop from the rafters and float above the audience.

Chou typically packs outdoor arenas across China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Chinese media flocked to Chou's news conference. Assemblywoman Judy Chu, D-Monterey Park, San Gabriel Mayor Harry Baldwin and Monterey Park City Council members David Lau and Betty Tom Chu each honored Chou. The singer's only Los Angeles concert is sponsored by San Gabriel-based jewelry company Chong Hing and a slew of corporations.

Chou said his latest music and videos are inspired by his experiences with love and life in high school and lifelong affection for kung fu. His show will incorporate some of the martial arts moves.

The singer has a loyal following in the United States, said fan Pearl Poon, 19, of San Marino. Poon somehow got into the news conference and stared wide-eyed at the handsome lad with green hair as he talked about his plans to direct and act in movies.

"His concerts are really fun,' she said.

Poon has her ticket for the show tonight. "He's like Chinese R & B. His shows and songs are really good. There's different flavors in each song.'

This is Chou's second tour of the United States. Chou, a Taiwan native, has five best-selling albums, which can be found in area Chinese music stores.

Yeah, the Las Vegas one seemed more vibrant though. Maybe it was because he changed clothes every 2-3 songs compared to this one 5-6 ones. This was good nonetheless, but shrine's speakers left my ears ringing, anybody else think the speakers were too loooud? Maybe I"m just getting too old for these kinda stuffs.
Hahaha :DDDD

6,400 ticket-buyers only?? I am sure Jay can do better than that... why are they so conservative over the choice of venue? they really should chose a bigger place. Don't they know fans fly across the globe to see Jay?!? Sure hope the space constrain doesn't affect his show for his fans in US.

Then again, perhaps it'd be a whole lot nicer cos it's so cozy and all

i went to the concert on saturday! it was GOOD! but sadly, i missed half of the last song, cos jay kept on teasn the whole crowd, sayin this was the last song and everything, and after QLX, my mom said it was finally over, so we left, and went to the restroom, then when we were about to leave the building, we heard him singing nunchuks with NQMM.

i agree, the arena was way to small, he should've performed at staples center, very close to there too , the seats was very cramped

This has been a huge sucess for jay. Even chinese newspapers published in Australia are going on about how well his concerts have gone. It exciting to flip through a few pages of the newspaper and then to see an article or 2 on jay and his concert

i went to the concert! it was so cool! and yes he had green hair, it didnt look faded though. the crowd was so packed and full of energy. it was so fun. oh yeah and they were selling extra tickets in the front, and since they were last minute it was cheap. I heard you could get a pretty good seat with just $50. and there were 3 encores!

just read over everyone elses post...the concert was really packed and it seemed to be sold out. (i saw a lot of people in line to buy the extra tickets) and his green hair was really obvious to me. and i sat on the top floor row 19 too.

Why don't they choose a bigger venue? I don't get it.
I'm sure Jay could easily have packed 10,000 people into the stadium.
Anyway, America is so big and Jay has fans from all over America.
Glad that it was a success though I'm not surprised. :wink2:
Was there any non-chinese there?

12-20-2004, 02:48 PM

it's not a surprise that his tickets will be sold out... i'm happy that his concert was a success here too... why can't i find any chinese-americans liking Jay's music too here
anyway, can't wait to see what he got up his sleeves for the east coast concert... the most expensive tickets are already sold out and there's not much left for the second most expensive ticket.

um, did i read wrong?... but i thought i read that he had green hair? :glug:.. that would be very interesting.......

I just got back from L.A. yesterday. Like the name implies, the concert was "INCOMPARABLE"!! Second row floor seats, so AWESOME!!!! :D A lot of us were able to take pics although the security guards kept coming by to stop us. His hair didn't look green though...

Even though I went alone (friend couldn't make it at the last minute :rasp: ), I still had a lot of fun with people I met there 'cause of our love for Jay, so that made it all worthwhile!! :D There so many people from all over; I met someone who came all the way from Utah with her mom and another girl from Texas with her friend; YEP, just goes to show how far Jay's popularity stretches here!! :D

Waaayyy better than THE ONE concert two years ago in Las Vegas!! Now if you'll excuse me... I'm gonna go through concert withdrawal...

really, they were actually selling tickets at the door! grr, my grandma could've came with us. we had to leave her at home, cos we only had 3.

what greenish-blue hair is everyone talkin about? his hair didnt look green or blue at all. i thought his hair was black. but then for one song, he came out, after a break. and my mom said, he dyed his hair or was wearing hair extensions. cos she said it was black before, which was true. but i think the lighting changed his hair to brownish, but i never saw a hint of green or blue.

i was pretty mad about the people in the balcony who threw the glow sticks, it was mainly guys, and some actually hit the stage, imagine if one of em hit jay. and the people who had front seats, probably had their head banged up pretty good, cos those hurt

*KawaiiDreamer*

yeah, it was a huge success, so Jay should have another concert in LA soon!! his hair was black not green..... the concert was so cool, I can't believe its over, I wish I could have gotten the nunchucks he threw out at the audience

Then i suppose his concert will be a real success!! I really wanna watch it the second time.. i'm afraid that by the time he comes for another concert in singapore, my memory will be failing me and i won't remember how awesome his concert was 2 years ago..

eh.. and also, jay with green hair? ermm... it's kinda unimaginable. i think green can't mix with black..

eek! after attending the concert in Singapore, ive been thinking of going to the ones overseas, im sure at least the foreign authorities wont be so strict on letting the artists come down from the stage to get closer to the crowd like they do here in Singapore...

and ooh, im just wondering if there are any more tickets available for his concert in Malaysia in January...does anyone know?

Thanks for posting!

Wow, I really wish Jay would come to Australia!!!!! I mean, we've had so many people here in the last year alone: Hacken, Miriam, A Mei, Joey, Emil Chau, Sally Yeh/George Lam etc. Why can't someone I want to see come for once ROTFL :bleh: Still, sounds like the LA concert was great, I'm glad it sold so well (as if it wouldn;t lol) :wink2:

Its a shame about the lack of spectacular flying and pyrotechnics because of the size of Shrine though :worry:
