Just found this now. The new 5th book is titled Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and it is set to release in the U.S. on June 21st. Stores like Borders, Barnes & Noble and Amazon.com are selling the book for $17.99, which is 40% cheaper than the original price of $29.99.

I'm looking forward to this book... I better get preordering. I want to get it before all my friends so I can say "Bwua-ha! I read it before you did!".

Oh finally! i think all the hp fans have waited long enough including myself! Humph!

actually i think there's a conspiracy going on...think about it, all her books (so far) have had much thought put into them and the story lines, plot, characters and their backgrounds have been well thought out and relate to each other very well. therefore, i think that rowling has already written ALL 7 books already and are releasing them slowly just to cause more publicity and sales of the book and its merchandise each time...well, perhaps its the publisher's idea, so as to make more money. coz when you think about, the books are so closely linked that she must have some idea already about what the implications of what happens in one book could have to the story of the next book...for example the story of Neville Longbottom...in the first book we know that he lives with his grandmother...then in the 3rd or 4th (can't remem which), more of his background is revealed to tell us that he is actually an orphan and his parents were also killed by voldemort...this revelation was used to make harry more humble about his own tragic history...and anyway, when you're writting a series, you must have some plan already about what's going to happen in each so that they link properly. if so, then i really don't think it could of taken her about 2 years to write one sequel...perhaps i'm too critical (or imaginative!), but that's what i've always thought...

so! back to the 5th book! can't wait for it to come out in australia!

Yea..me too. very excited about the 5th book.
I atcually started reading Harry Potter's book after watching the first movie. Then, I bought all of Harry Potter's books and read it all 4 books in a year.
THat's crazy...I still didn't understand why I read all of them.

I Love anything fantasy so it's unavoidable that I'd like Harry Potter too. Hope it comes out soon here it's gonna be the thickes book yet in the series. You may have a point there ker_ai_teresa, maybe it is a conspiracy. Hmm....as long as I can read more about Harry I don't really mind so much...can't wait for the net HP movie too.

i liked the harry potter series too, because i like fantasy!! :) i've heard that the book is about the number of pages as the 4th book which is the goblet of fire, except the words are printed smaller, i wonder how long it's going to take me to read it if i get it??

JK Rowling has said is lots of interviews, that she's planned out the entire story arc for all seven books, and there will only ever be seven books. I dunno about the sonspiracy since she had all the time in the world before she was famous to write the books. But with everything she's got going on now, there's more pressure and things to do to keep up with everything. It's harder to make it great under pressure and time contraints.

There are also releasing a special edition copy in the States (I don't know about the rest of the world.). It's coming in a slip case and the book cover is different (artwork-wise) and can be framed. It's $42.00 on Amazon I think. But it looks nice.:) The book is about 150 pgs or so more than the last one, but that just means more fun for all.

Less than a month away! Whoo-hoo!

yay!! i cant wait for the 5th book either!! from the stuff that JK told the media, it sounds pretty interesting (as always). but i think it will be a good one. lots of new info to grasp onto.

as for the conspiracy..hmm i highly doubt it. possible. but i think she might just have a rough idea of what she wants to write and what not.

i cant wait for the 3rd movie either!!! :excited:

eeeeek! :excited: so excited about the 5th book!! just hope its not going to be too expensive....

ker_ai_teresa
05-25-2003, 01:07 AM
hmmm...wouldn't be surprised if there was a special edition for the states...even with the first book the title had to be change to hp and the sorcerer's stone instead of what the rest of the world had (hp and the philosopher's stone)! i always wondered why the title had to be changed just for the states? what's wrong with philosopher? anybody know?

Quiet Boy

I don't think theres a conspiracy or anything, its just cleverly planned like any other text.
I've read JK Rowlings biography book, and she was actually quite depressed and stuff before she wrote harry potter, and had trouble finding a publisher for her first book. I don't think she would have had time to plot a "conspiracy".

Any idea when the 5th book is coming out in aus? things are always released here later than the rest of the world!

ker_ai_teresa
05-25-2003, 06:25 AM
sorry, perhaps i didn't didn't explain myself clearly enough. i didn't mean that rowling was out to 'plot a conspiracy' i just think that the publisher or whoever it is that markets her books and merhandise are making marketing and publicity stunts. we shouldn't be naive in thinking that such tactics are not used to help increase sales and provide more chances for publicity. i mean just look at the media. after such a long period without the release of the fifth book, they are sure to make a big fuss over the release when it finally happens...free publicity! we are fans, we purchase and read the books, but in the end, for the publisher and owners of copyright its about how much money they can make. :wink2:

i just can't wait! but i know i not gonna buy it , just gonna wait to borrow from someone cuz if i buy one i'll buy them all and they would take a lot of space on my bookshelf. PLus i read the first ones twice and the second, thir and fourth three times. my favorite book is the third one and kinda the fourth. I thought i hear before that the fifth book was gonna be about seven hundred pages. now also can't waith for the third movie.
I thought the fifth book is coming out in June, twenty -something. :glug:

Yups that's right. June 21, 9:01 am exactly. Reason for the time to be like that is so that it coincides with the official release date in England- June 21, 12:01 am.

05-26-2003, 10:27 AM
I wouldn't want to read it on the internet...your eyes can get so tired staring at the screen for so long. I'd rather be holding the book and pouring over it.

I'm pretty sure that the 5th book is well over 800 pages. The last was over 700 and the 5th is even longer.

Serendipity

I've put down my order for the 5th book!
Along with the preorder comes a Lucky Draw and the grand prize brings you to London to meet Rowling herself on the 26th June!
Let it be me!!! Please!!!

Anyway, there's an Adult version and a Kid version of the cover of the book. The Kid one is similar to all the previous 4 we've seen. The Adult one is a duller one to suit the older crowd. I'm getting the Kid one.

Gwen910
06-02-2003, 10:18 AM
They have two covers for all the books. It's for those adults who don't want to be seen reading a "kid" book. I don't really care...I'm in touch with the child within...

Quiet Boy

so the picture on the cover is the only difference bewteen the adult and children version? damn I thought the adult version would include some "extra scenes" or something...

Wow, what an incredibly FS-thing to say. No, I don't think Harry will be having sex with Hermione any time soon, and I doubt J.K. Rowling will every write anything like that. Harry Potter was meant for the younger audience, although it attracted much, much older people, and so it's going to stay like that --;;;;;

On the other hand, I can't wait until it comes out, either!! Wow, just... 19 more days!! Woohoo!! I hear Harry goes out with Cho Chang!! Woohoo!! We need more deaths at Hogwarts!!

I read at this other forum that it's rumoured to be BoA! I'm not sure how good her English is exactly, but supposedly the producers noticed her after she worked with Westlife. I think she'd be quite fitting for the part though.

http://mugglenet.com/cho.shtml <- I think that's where they got it from.

cici bebe
06-04-2003, 01:39 AM
I don't.. isn't Cho Chang Chinese? I think Cho Chang should have a distinct Chinese look to her.. BoA is too "made" and plain. (Sorry BoA fans.. I don't mean to offend.)

I also heard a rumor that it was Utada.. but I think she is a bit too old for Harry Potter?

Jess
06-04-2003, 04:29 AM
Mm, I heard the rumor with Boa being cast as Cho (some Harry Potter sites are convinced it will be) but I'm not sure if it's true or not.

Here's an article from some random Cho Chang fansite (Cho Chang's World):

----------------------------------------

Kwan Boa

BoA rumors were around for a very long time and were extremely strong. It was saw she was visiting London to promote Westlife's new album, "Unbreakable: The Greatest Hits" when she got a request to play Cho Chang.

The rumor became so overwhelming that Boa's agency, SM entertainment, has denied this rumor and insists Boa has not recieved any offer for the part.

Her name was spread around A LOT, and she has probably been the biggest rumor for Cho. I thought BoA was perfect for Cho, but it looks like she won't be it.

----------------------------------------

But, I've heard from a lot more sites than that one that she WAS offered the part.

Oh well. We will just have to wait and see.

I just pre-ordered my Harry Potter book yesterday at Borders. 15 more days to go!! (I think..?)

Serendipity

I like BoA!
I've always thought Cho Chang to be a korean...
Still, an anonymous face may go down better as Cho. It's weird to see someone like BoA who's all bubblegum pop in HP. It's like she's gonna spring into her No.1 dance in the middle of Hogwarts!
God save the little boys with raging hormones...

i always wondered why the title had to be changed just for the states? what's wrong with philosopher? anybody know?

when the first book was released out, i was down in the states to do a little shopping and i saw the us version of the book and i was a little surprised cause i didnt know there were two versions, so i asked the bookstore lady, and she told me they had 2 seperate versions because theres a difference in the diction. like they rewrote it so that instead of british slang, they have us slang. i havent read the us version, but i did remember seeing a lamenated sheet near the shelf of books with a list of the different words and what the meanings are and stuff.

so to answer your question, maybe they just had another title to help seperate the two.
but i personally like name philosophers stone much better than the us version!

I used to be a huge fan of Harry Potter. But not anymore, it's ok, i prefer other books now. But I still want to continue my collection because i'm just curious on how the story will end.

Gwen910
06-07-2003, 08:18 AM
I don't think BoA would make a good Cho. I always saw Cho as Chinese too, despite the first name. She's never done any professional acting and her English still needs to be worked on. And if they keep to the idea of an all-British cast, BoA better have something spectacular to offer. I think WB has yet to buy the rights to the 4th and 5th book. So the movies could potentially end after the third, which doesn't even come out til next year.

no prob ker_ai_teresa! i agree with you 100% if the book was good enough for everyone else, why make special editions for the us??

ummm as for boa being cho chiang.. hmmm i dont think she'll make a good cho. yeaa i think shes supposed to be chinese... chiang.. isnt that like the same as cheng? as in ekin cheng? just a differnt way of spelling it??

I think BoA would make a great cho. She's pretty at least. So the white people would get a good impression of asians... :D...

Gwen910
06-09-2003, 10:59 AM
But you don't want white people to just think of Asians as objects of beauty; we'd want to give a better impression of Asians that just "China doll."

Plus there are better looking Asians out there that can act, if it comes down to looks.

ker_ai_teresa, sorry I didn't see this earlier (I don't read Harry Potter books or watch the movies so it makes sense for me to skip this topic ).

BoA is a Korean artiste and she is 16 years of age (unless her birthday has passed this year). She was spotted by a talent agency, shipped to Japan to learn singing and dancing at the age of 11 or 12 (sorry I don't really remember, if anyone knows, please correct me if I'm wrong).

She sings in both Japanese and Korean, although she has done forgettable attempts at English and Mandarin. She has released two Japanese and two Korean albums (again, someone please correct me if I'm wrong here).

Pictures of her may be easily found online, so I won't link them here. Hope that helps.

thanx lepencil! that really helps to clear things up...at least i know who this person is now!

so is she meant to be any good at singing? or even acting?

regarding the speculations about cho chang's nationality, i agree that she probably isn't suppose to be chinese...unless rowling didn't do sufficient research on names b4 using it in book, which is unlikely. the name could easily be of other asian origin...i was thinking chinese/cambodian, coz i know of someone who's name is 'chang' from that background.

dunno really, but that's my 2 cents worth.

I think she's the number one selling artist in Korea right now and her record sales rival that of the top Japanese female artists. She's won tons of of awards in both countries too. She's never acted professionally and she sings and dances slightly better than the average person.

But just because she's popular doesn't mean she should get the part!

ker_ai_teresa
06-12-2003, 11:57 AM
But just because she's popular doesn't mean she should get the part!

that's true...but who else could play the part? don't live in england so don't know whether there are any asian actors out there. i suppose it would be best to find someone who can speak english and preferably with an english accent. but then, cho chang's role/part in the book isn't very significant...she doesn't say much or even appear in many of the scenes, so suppose it's not such a big deal who eventually gets the part.

Quiet Boy
06-12-2003, 02:19 PM

it wasn't an all british cast but harry (daniel radcliff) is british. the main characters are all brits i think. if you watched the oprah interview last year, he speaks with brit accent. it's not a thick accent but it's definitly brit.

I actually have a friend that despises Harry Potter. He read the first book and didn't like it at all... and he's really not looking forward to the next book coming out (naturally, he's not going to read it).

The book is out already in malaysia. I'm looking at the cover as i type. it's really thick! lol. I got the adult version? It's just the same book with different cover.

Has it already been three years? I suppose I have to agree JK Rowlings life has been pretty hectic lately. I haven't been reading up on her tho'. but i know she got married.
And to have all that pressure of keeping the quality of her books consistent and even trying to better the other books she's written it's a big feat. *goes off to read the first chapter* I'll bet it's gonna be good.

Yeah...hehe...but she only heard about it when she saw the hype on the news on TV. So when she shut shop at midnight with my dad, she kinda went to city centre to buy it. I reckon they just wanted to join in the kids parties at the book shops and dress up as wizards...hehe..but isnt £17 a bit OTT for a book..its hardback and its very thick and all that, but kids are spending their pocket money on it!

Dont worry....go to sleep and when you wake up you can go...its like waiting for christmas day! hehe....

I just read in the Newspapers, and Wall-Mart accidentally put the book on the shelves a day earlier, and this girl bought it.
So when Wall-Mart found out about this, they offered $5000 to get it back from her.
And the SO STOOPID girl said no cuz she was reading it. (slap slap)
Some people may think that the girl is so brave and etc wutever. But i think it's plain STUPID!
It's only a day!!!!! she could of got it the next day! and she would have 5000 BUCKS in her pocket!!!
and the girl isnt 6 or 8, she's a teen. (roll eyes) why do people have no brains these days.

Yatta!

I got my copy just today. *^^* It was so great because I got to point my finger at my friend and laugh. She ordered it for around $30, and when I went to Sam's Club, I bought it for just $15. Just watch, I'm going to be reading it all day and night until I finish it.

Though, really... I read it just for the sake of reading it.. I find now that I don't really get a whole lot of pleasure out of reading it.... The wait must've been too long. Took all the fun out of the books.

I got the book today... I feel sorry for my friend that's more obsessed than me (been waiting 3 years.. I forgot about Harry Potter for a while, wasn't THAT obsessed... just started liking it more than usual recently), she forgot to reserve it.. so she has to wait a "couple days" which may not seem that bad.. but it is when you've been waiting forever and your friends are reading it before you...

Someone dies in the book... I know who it is (I won't ruin it for anyone.. please, everyone, if you know who it is and someone asks to know, don't post it here in public.. PM it to them... it ruins the entire story effect) and it's really saddened me.. as he/she was one of my favorite characters in the book. This book is supposed to be a lot more darker than the rest and we find out much more about Sirius' past.

I haven't started reading it yet, I'm waiting until I can just climb into my warm bed and enjoy it fully =)

(btw... No, Hagrid does not die. I don't know how many rumors were flying around about that.. but he doesn't die.)

well in the papers they had 5 main suspects as to which main character rowling killed off. They were: Hagrid, Ron, Hermione, Dumbledore and Draco.
the paper sounded pretty adamant that it was one of these character whos dies....i really can't see it being ron or hermione....or draco....or dumbledore....so that leaves hagrid?

i don't know! i wish she didn't have to do anymore killings! it's becoming too sinister to be children's literature.

Jess

Ruin? :? Sorry.. I didn't realize ^^;; I thought I was just giving a brief teaser.. I'll be quiet about the book now =P

well in the papers they had 5 main suspects as to which main character rowling killed off.

Okay.. whoever doesn't want a semi-spoiler (doesn't reveal who died, but still, some would take it as a spoiler), don't highlight and paste the next line to try to read it.

***SEMI-SPOILER ALERT***

The paper was wrong. It's someone else who died.

Whoo-hoo! I waited til I finished the book before I joined in on this conversation so as not to get and spoilers.

Did anyone get the special edition (US) one? I did and it's pretty nice. Maybe not worth the price, but definitely nice. It comes in a slip case that has the same picture as the regular US edition (all shades of blue) and the slip cover is different! It's a picture of 12 Grimmauld Place by Mary Grand Pre, who does all the US book artwork. When you open the book, the first page is the regular picture and the back as the regular back cover.:) But yeah...the slip cover is meant to be framed, but I think I'll leave mine on the book.

Anyhoo...the book was fun and well-paced. I didn't feel the need to rush through it like I did with book 4. (That and I didn't want to miss any details.) The death wasn't too surprising, almost expected at a point (like I knew this person was going to go) but I was still bummed when the person died.

But finish up people and we can all discuss the finer points.:D

I was one of those mad adults who rushed down to the bookstores at 6-odd in the morning for the book! (The Magic Moment was 7.01am in Singapore) It was pretty fun, considering I had my friends with me who were also fans of HP... we brought a video camera down and recorded The Magic Moment... heh... we were a little cranky, yes.

Anyway, back to the book... that character was my absolute favourite. I cried buckets

i would agree that this is not the best book of the serious, and its definitely not my favourite. for one, harry is so arrogant now that i had trouble reading past the first few chapters. another thing is how little i got to see of Dumbledore, I really adore him! not so much in this book though, he was acting weird all the way.

ok seriously, dont kill me here, but i actually didnt think that order of the phoenix was as good as the others. It kinda stretched out too long and nothing really much happened sometimes. Also what annoyed me that most of the characters acted like childish and like idiots at times. It just didn't get me as excited as say prisoner of azkabhan did. But dont get me wrong, I still think its a pretty good book, and I dont regret purchasing it!

yeh, i actually expected the book to be a little better, it really annoyed me the the fact that she killed off one of the best characters and how harry was a little baby throughout the whole book, complaining about EVERYTHING.

my frends kept saying that it was sad at the end bit and how'd i'd end up crying, cept i didn't really see how it was sad.

and yeh, i agree with quiet boy, nothing really happens except for the endbit, its actually made me realise harry potter isn't as special, and its so overrated!! people say its better than it really is, but i guess thats a personal opinion. tho i still wanna read the 6th one, but 2 years??!?! argh!!

Hmm ok.. My opinion on the book:

It wasn't worth the wait and it definitely didn't meet my expectations of what I thought that it'd be. The whole book was too wordy, going into too much details which resulted in re-reading some of the lines again.

There was the climax, but everything afterwards just fell straight from top to bottom, and I guess that's what disappointed me the most. The ending was just boring, not leaving me hanging on the edge for the next book.

After reading the 5th book, I can now say that I'm in no rush whatsoever to read the 6th, I'd actually wouldn't mind if it came out after 2 years.

linny
07-07-2003, 11:39 PM
Ya know, I think JK Rowling purposely made Harry a brat. It kind of shows that he was like his father, don't you think?

The end was so anticlimatic. And, perhaps I'm just being idiotic, but I didn't think the long explanation was very original. Interesting, but it's not like it's anything really impactful that I haven't heard already.

But then, Rowling isn't trying to please the masses, is she?

*shrug* At least, some parts were still very amusing. I loved Fred and George. They left with some STYLE. Oh heck yea! XD

So, the question would have to be...

What was your favorite character from the 5th book?

cici bebe
07-08-2003, 12:34 AM
I just got the book and is 2 pages into it and already lost interest. A lot because of how I heard the book was disappointing and don't want to read a 900-paged book then get disappointed. ;D

Gah so I hear:
1). Cho is annoying (that SUCKS)
2). Harry is a brat (grr makes me not like Harry and it's bad to not like the main character)
3). Ending was cliche (gachasdf I want a good ending!)

Just makes me so excited to crack into the book.. ;D

Cho is REALLY annoying in the book -___-;; and Harry is having some major hormonal problems.

Fred and George had an AWESOME exit from the school. "Give us hell for her, Peeves." That's like the perfect exit for them, and they made the end of the book so much awesomer.

Angels on clouds
07-09-2003, 06:18 AM

i found nearly everyone annoying in the book...harry was so stupid, hermione had to explain everything to him and all cho ever did was cry, umbridge was a bitch, hagrid was unimportant, dumbledore's explaination at the end was unsatisfying, mrs weasley was really annoying with all her worrying and sirius was not himself throughout the whole book.

i was also disappointed with draco malfoy hardly appearing in the book and ron and hermione weren't exactly good prefects(they hardly did any prefect stuff).

my favourite characters in the book ended up being hermione, fred and george, ginny and neville.
i thought it was really sweet and sad when neville poketed the candy wrapper his mum gave him.

Chun Li
07-09-2003, 11:58 PM
It was interesting how Ginny became such a strong character though. I think she will end up with Harry.

But another thing about Cho - how annoying that she's the token asian in this world famous book and she turns out to be a big baby. Yes... embed in the minds of little children that asian girls are just whiny little babies...

linny
07-10-2003, 12:22 AM
-___-''

Cho Chang is annoying. She drove me nuts through the whole book. If you ask me, she has even more hormonal issues than Harry. It's a shame her character had to be Asian.

Anyone get the feeling Rowling's feeling the pressure to put in important details from the last four books, so readers who haven't read 1-4 can read book 5?

I think that could explain the unsatisfying explanation by Dumbledore...

FRED AND GEORGE! They're great. I really like how Neville is moving along. His character is actually very sweet.

I love Lupin, his character is so mysterious. That's why I love Sirius and Snape's character, also -- so complex. I wonder, will Snape stay on the right side, or go to Voldemort when the war begins?

I was really pissed off at Percy, he's so stupid. His retarded job is more important than his family?? That's messed up... I never really liked his character in the beginning, but now he's become even more annoyingly pompous... I hope he doesn't end up betraying his family or Harry or anything...

I think the thing they did with Neville was pretty cool... about how they added a lot more about his family and the pain he went through, and then the whole thing with the prophecy... I'll bet he'll have an important part to play in the next two books, who knows, adding him in the prophecy (well, although indirectly) must be hinting something...

Lupin rocks, he's kinda like the rock behind all the mess...Cho really sucks...Percy's a complete idiotic moron.

Ron just kinda faded into the background in this book...and I liked him so in the other books...

Umbridge totally got on my nerves.

ugh!! i can fianlly rant about this book!!!!
after spending endless nights and days reading this stupid book non stop, i have come to several conclusions:
1)harry is such a brat, always "me me me!"
2)cho is SCANDALOUS! cry over cedric one moment, then start kissing harry the next, and THEN starts dating someone new right after!!
3)umbridge is unbelieveable FREAKY and ultimately EVIL!
4)dumbledore is human after all...

i cant believe JK killed one of my all time favortie characters :profanit: !!! i didnt want to believe it! but i think he'll come back.

most of the characters pissed me off soo bad in the 5th book, but i found luna pretty interesting, i think she may play a bigger role in the next two books.

what i kind of question is neville. troughout the first 4 books, hes been portrayed as almost kind of useless, almost a squib, but suddenly in the 5th book hes more powerfull almost at hermione's level or something during their da sessions.

i think the only thing that go me through the book which made it kind of interesting was that it was filled with lots of information, tying up loose ends i suppose.

but i would have to say that i enjoyed this book more than the 2nd book....

I was kinda disappointed with the book. There was a total anti-climax at the end. It was building up and building up and then he dies...just like that. And what sort of big secret was that!?! We all knew it already!

Still a good read though...just very hard for JK Rowling to live up to expectations!

Okay, so the 4th book was some 700 pages, the 5th was 800 something. The question now is...

How big do you think the 6th book will be?

I say JK Rowling hits 1000+ around 7th book. :D

I like long Harry Potter books. I think the 5th book ended too fast.. if that makes any sense. Harry Potter is one series that I'm not really getting tired of, so it was kinda depressing to read the 5th book so fast and have to wait like 2 more years until the next one.

Anyway...

I think we could still learn a lot about Lupin's past, I'm sure in either the 6th, or 7th book Rowling will tell us about it... So far, we've heard a lot in detail about Sirius's past.. so I'm looking forward to hearing about Lupin's past... like who did he get bitten by? What happened? Where are his parents?

Cho = Autumn, as in "Cho Tian?" So where's the CHANG come from?

And what's a "squib" according to Rowling?

Angels on clouds
07-14-2003, 02:03 PM
eh i tink a squib is one who is born into a wizarding family but has no magic powers. smthg like that.

Let's compile a list of things to ask Miss Rowling.
i'll start....

1. Why/how/where/etc was Lupin bitten by a werewolf?
2. Why did Harry's parents get involved with the Order of the Phoenix?
3. Why is Grawp in this whole story in the 1st place?
4. Did they have "Defence against the Dark Arts" lessons b4 Harry arrived at Hogwarts? if they did who was the teacher? ( this, i forgot...anyone correct me if it was mentioned b4)
5. Would the result be the same (ie. lose powers and a leave a scar) if Voldemort attacked Neville Longbottom instead? Or it'll only happen to harry?
6. Why in the world did he choose to attack Harry in the 1st place?

5. Would the result be the same (ie. lose powers and a leave a scar) if Voldemort attacked Neville Longbottom instead? Or it'll only happen to harry?
6. Why in the world did he choose to attack Harry in the 1st place?

For number 5, Neville Longbottom would only have a scar, and Voldemort would lose his powers, if his parents or someone close to him died trying to protect him. The only reason why Harry is still alive and only has a scar from his encounter with Voldemort, and Voldemort had lost all his powers, was because Harry's parents had loved him so much and were willing to completely sacrifice their lives for his life that Voldemort was getting involved in something that he didn't expect and wasn't used to -- love. He didn't know how to handle the strong emotion of love that was given when he confronted Harry and his parents, and so his death curse recoiled and hit him instead, which resulted in him losing his powers but not killing him.

And he wanted to kill Harry (I think) because his parents were involved in the Order of the Phoenix. One by one he and his death eaters would torture or kill a member of the Order -- thus destroying the organization. When he reached Lily and James' house through the help of Wormtail, he murdered them both and was expecting to murder Harry, also, because Harry was the son of the two parents of the Order. That's the logical, obvious reason why Voldemort wanted to kill Harry in the first place -- but I also think it had something to do with the Prophecy, or something that Voldemort had found out about Harry that might later be a threat to him...

I think Wormtail is going to have a large part to play in the ending of the series. Remember when Harry had bitterly told Dumbledore that he shouldn't have let Wormtail go at the end of Prisoner of Azkaban? And Dumbledore had told him that it was not only a very noble thing to do, but also very important -- that one of the strongest links in the wizarding world was debt, and Harry had saved Wormtail's life so Wormtail was bound to Harry in a magical way in the sense that he owed Harry his life. So I think that Wormtail might actually do something extremely important in the end.

just to let everyone knoe, i think cho chang is actually korean!!! (and not chinese) i was wondering for awhile if whether chinese ppl call their daughters cho chang, and i don't think they do, and if they did, it'd be a pretty weird name. so i was on a 'learn korean site', and it was talking about names and it had cho chang mentioned on it, so yeh. but i'm not sure if this is 100% correct. is cho chang her full name or issit just a name like marie-ashley??

just to let everyone knoe, i think cho chang is actually korean!!! (and not chinese) .... is cho chang her full name or issit just a name like marie-ashley??

Yeah, I think Cho Chang is Korean too. Cho is almost definitely a Korean name, and Chang can be Chinese or Korean. So, I figure she is Korean. And... well, I think I just answered the next question. Cho is her first name. Chang is her last name. I remember somewhere in the book, her classmates called to her as "Chang", sort of like how some friends just call you by the last name.

Anyway, I guess the Harry Potter book was okay. It was weird though. For the first 1/4 of the novel, nothing...nothing... nothing. Nothing interesting happens. Then you see Harry go about his daily life in Hogwarts for the next 1/2 of the novel, but only a little bit of developing conflict. And finally, the last 1/4 or 1/5 of the book all of this action happens. People fighting, dying, etc. WEIRD!

i loved the book. it was fantastic. though i forgot what happened in the previous book so i so v blurred while reading the first few chapters of book 5. but the plot was great though the book kinda had a very depressing ambience. it was probably supposed to anyway, since it's highly weird to have a happy ambience when voldermort's back. it became such an angsty book though. but more real now, since they didnt make dumbledore seem so perfect and actually showed his weakness. the book kept me crying throughout the entire chap though. from the part after sirius died all the way till the part dumbledore teared. oops. hopefully all the ppl who decide to come to this particular discussion have read e book already. or else this is a spoiler. -nods-.

hey fellow hp pplz! haven't been in this thread for a long while coz i didn't get my hand on the book til last week and haven't finished till today!

er...noticed many pages of discussions here....should i go and read it all? :?

anywayz, i had a big "discussion/argument" about the 5th book with someone from another forum, so to avoid that from happening here, i think i'll keep my comments a bit more general.

well to begin with, i'd rate it a 7/10. i absolutely did not enjoy the first 200 pages of the book. i think rowling was a bit too long-winded and went into a lot unecessary detail. some scenes/events could have been omitted and wouldn't have affected the story much. for eg, the part where harry recieved the warning letter for using magic against the dementors, and he and his relos went into this long discussion about dementors and other things. also, his stay at sirius's house while waiting for his hearing could have been shortened.
harry was being a real pain in the backside with his constant yelling and screaming at his friends and the arrogant attitude he displayed. some pplz might say well, he's growing up, 15yo so he should be acting adolescent. but i still felt rowling could have been more consistent with his character, and also that of ron's. i don't think he would have necessary put up with harry's antics as well as he did. i mean, remem what happened b/w the both of them in the goblet?

the storyline of the book was still great, it's just that it could have been told a bit faster. it felt a bit "draggy" if you know what i mean.

about sirius, i have a feeling he might not be totally dead yet....i mean he fell behind the curtain and who knows what that curtain was and could do....remem, the dept of mysteries....

Don't kill me people, but I like Lupin even more than I like Sirius. He's so cool. XD

i like lupin more too! he's the nice guy amongst the 4 friends.
i was a bit disappointed that lupin didn't play much of a role in the book. he was there just for the sake of being there, i felt. i hope we see more of him and his involvement in the future books!

i think like most ppl, i hated umbridge to death! rowling really created this character well.....i wonder what happened to her in the forest with those centuars???

Fred and George had an AWESOME exit from the school. "Give us hell for her, Peeves." That's like the perfect exit for them, and they made the end of the book so much awesomer.
fred and george!! aren't they the best?!! however, their exit might have been better and more satisfying if they had dropped dungbombs onto umbridge just b4 flying off!

i think in the future books, it would be good to see harry "grow up". he's always been keen to be the hero and i think after placing his friends at so much risk, he should learn to control himself. after all, characters in well written stories do change and grow from what they were originally. like neville and ginny, who's characters have grown significantly but also subtly. it's not like suddenly "whoa!" what happened to them?
so yah, hopefully, some sense will be knocked into harry so that he'll stop being so self-centred.

oh, one final thing, my fave character is RON! he is still so funny!!! whenever the book becomes a little boring, a funny line from him can really lighten things up!

well...few other things that i feel are left hanging are:

1. when fred and george left school, rowling didn't really let us know mrs weasley's reaction...i mean ,,ron was like worrying bout his mum's reaction but in the end..there was nothing..no howler etc.the only possible explaination i could come up with was that mrs weasley has other more worrying things to worry about. hehe..

2. how come umbridge got off so lightly?? i mean she committed a major crime by asking dementors to go after harry.. which brings me to cornelius fudge and all those other ministry ppl who were with him..stunning mcgonagall and all..terrible..

3. someone mentioned it.. but what's with grawp??i'm surprised the forbidden forest is still around after all his 'exercise" (read: uprooting of trees) grawp, firenze, prof trelawney, luna lovegood..i guess we'll know more about them in the next book.

hmmn..i like how fred and george finally got to live out their fantasy(read: playing tricks without worrying about getting kicked out of school)..they're really great wizards by the way to be able to make such awesome tricks (even prof flitwick thinks so..hehe).also i like how all the other teachers silent rebellion against umbridge.(umbridge's such a lousy witch..obviously she's worse than the twins since she can't undo their spells)

somehow i think fred n george might be back in school in the next book..with dumbledore as headmaster again..this should be no prob..plus i'm sure molly weasley would insist they finish school..hehe..i'm happy that neville and ginny have gotten stronger..precy's a prat though..

oh well i'm rambling on and on..sorry..guess i better stop now..

i was wondering this too. but suppose it was a good thing that this detail was overlooked. who knows how many pages rowling would've used to explain the whole event of molly getting angry at them?

and yah, forgot to mention percy b4. what kind of an idiot wouldn't even care about his father being attacked and lying in hospital? perhaps he'd come to his senses later....perhaps after causing a serious mistake?

to clear up the meaning of cho chang's name i found this on a website http://www.theninemuses.net/hp/
"Cho" is Japanese for "very, extremely". "Chang", when used as a first name, can signify a person that is quick thinking and to the point. Therefore Cho Chang is "very quick thinking", quite appropriate for a Ravenclaw. Additionally, Haruka informs me that "Cho Cho" is Japanese for "butterfly".

but i felt like she could have written about something else other than...ahh! it was almost like she ran out of ideas. and i didnt like the new harry. i was so hopeing that cho chang and him would...be happy together! adn that harry would he his old and funny self.

like you i didn't quite like the book either. but i didn't feel anything at all when sirius died. it was like nothing had happened. harry didn't even appear to be too upset about it. he only felt guilty about it. it wasn't like when cedric was killed. i felt upset about that coz he seemed so innocent.
whereas sirius was developing into a selfish character so to me, it wasn't anything disappointing.

i felt the book didn't need to be written. nothing major happened. it really only served the purpose of seeing harry and the other characters go through adolescence.

But I wonder why Cho Chang won't be in the third movie. She does play a very important character as the story progresses, and I think they should've included her just so we can see her character develop.

Hey thanks for the link, I saw some of the pictures in the newspaper and that Emma chick is apparently taller than Harry now, which I think is funny. But I wonder why Cho Chang won't be in the third movie. She does play a very important character as the story progresses, and I think they should've included her just so we can see her character develop.

i went and looked at the trailer for the movie and malfoy looks all different...dumbledore has changed as well...i think its the person from LOTR but im not very sure...anyhow dumbldore doesnt look so "caring and nice" anymore...theres a different feel with another actor playing dumbledore...

thnx for the link....aya...yeah i heard the rumour too bout Boa....but i think adnam8's right that Cho wont appear in this 3rd one.....man too bad...than we wont see the part where...Harry fell from the brrom eh?...yeah they cut out too much...which is not good.....

and hey Fantasy_Surrealism the former Dumbledore is dead  poor him....yeah the new Dumbledore is the old guy from LOTR...they sure do look alike....but i prefer the old Dumbledore....he looks warmer...i don kno...

poor dumbledore =( i reckon that gandalf looked like him in LOTR, but then in the still pics, doesnt look like him. aw, and i still reckon they should have just taken aragorn and put him as sirius.

..what are the odds they leave cho out altogether? maybe the boa rumor is for later movies..? i dont know, they confused me! soo cant wait for the movie =)

OH i LOVED the harry potter books!!!!
I loved "Prisoner of Azkaban" and I hope they'll do a good job with the movie...they have to do credit to the book!!!!!!!!
I thought the first one was pretty bad....the second one's not too bad though! Hopefully the trend continues....hm....

But as the books seem to get exponentially thicker, I dont think they can fit the entire book into a movie though.....HM.....
i think all the harry potter (book) fans will get really mad if they cut out essential parts of the book...!!!!

btw, thanks for the links, adnam8!!! Sirius looks erm...so haggard and old!!! Perhaps thats the post-azkaban look....
but i've always thought that sirius was supposed to be a good-looking fella......

I think they can because as i read the book...some parts are not so interesting and sure that they would cut that out.....and i believe that they wont cut the important part tho...jus some lil bits out...

oh i think the Boa rumor is surely for the 4th movie.....cos there'll be more part of Cho in the Goblet of Fire, which is my most fav part

I hear there is a rumour that the two girls that end up Harry's and Ron's partner at the yule ball are both asians...'Padama, patil...i think those are their names'
I think Cho cries too much in the 5th book.
She doesn't seem as nice like she was in the 4th book.
Have they actually picked someone for Cho?
I've been looking around, and they haven't shown any signs of her being picked already.
Yeah, I also heard Boa was going to be the one...but I heard something like, the girl has to be Brittish, thus meaning she needs a Brittish accent......
I wish they made it a bit more open to people around the world to act in the movies.
I tried to audition for Cho Chang *^^*....
But they wrote me a letter back telling me that they had been too busy to look through the pile of letters they recieved...and that they were sorry.
Hehe....
TT^TT how sad

Wow that's the first time I've heard that Padma and Patil are going to played by Asians.

Jenen you tried to audition for the part of Cho Chang? Well at least they took the time to print you out a letter to say sorry.

lil~jo
12-20-2003, 09:05 AM
Yeah, it took them awhile to reply...I was quite happy that they sent something back.
*^^*
Its nice to know that you were acknowledged....
I mean, they have not picked Cho Chang yet...
The letter told me so...
hehe*^^*....offers are still out there....they just said to send it back later=)

wow, i didnt know there were auditions! apparently, emma watson went to my sisters school. my sister complains that she owes her a dollar =) hehe, kids!

yea, cho seems alot more.. self centred-ish in the 5th book. isnt boa taller than daniel radcliffe tho? coz cho is meant to be a head shorter ><

haha Jerria, u really love boa.. and cho, dont u! jkjk. cho seemed heaps nicer earlier on tho.

lil~jo
12-21-2003, 05:35 AM
Yeah, Cho does seem more self centred....(no offence)
I'd find it pretty hard trying to pretend to cry.....(according to the book....she cries....a LOT!)
-_-"....so yeah....
hehe...
And yes...B.O.A is taller...hehe...
Has anyone heard about how Boa became a star?
Something...I heard was that, her brother was auditioning...and she went along to just watch...when she sang along, they thought she was good.
And so the Music company wanted her to become a singer....(not sure what happened to the brother after that....does anyone know?)

adnam8
12-21-2003, 10:09 AM
yea, i read about that. poor guy. and then they taught her japanese, how to dance, and all that stuff. is her brother still singing tho? i wanted to find that out but... forget =\

Don't you think it's weird how you guys are all of a sudden talking about BoA and have forgotten about Harry? But I really doubt she's going to be in the film. Even if they want her, would she be willing to do it? And she looks nothing like what I imagined Cho to look like.

ooh, sorri, when i posted, i thought this was the boa page.

i think that they'd prolly choose a new actor altogether for cho. they should have already found someone i think.. coz havent they started filming? coz its a different director, they could start.

12-22-2003, 07:58 PM
Not yet...well...at present I think they are still deciding, the audition dates have closed I think....
So, as I said before- their deciding at the moment.!*^^*
I wish not only Brittish people could audition!!!!

Alright.. I finally, FINALLY got round to reading The Order of the Phoenix yesterday!! Woohoo!! :excited:

Yes yes yes, I'm late, it's been nearly a year since it came out. *bows head* Reason being is that I refused to look at it until I re-read books 1-4, so me being lazy + not having much time... yeah. Actually it was a good thing I did, because with my horrible memory it was sort of like reading the books for the first time... I couldn't even remember who some of the bad guys were.

Onto HP5. I wasn't surprised at all when Sirius died. I had a feeling it was either going to be him or Hagrid... I knew it was a character of relative importance in the series but not of profound importance such as Ron or Hermione. If only Harry had contacted Sirius using the two-way mirror he was given instead!! If only he'd remembered about it!! I hope there will be some kind of loophole and Sirius will appear in later books, because we never really got to know him THAT well.. he's always been in hiding or on the run, having to correspond with Harry via owl or something. At least Harry still has Lupin though.

Eh.. as for the Howler that Dumbledore sent Petunia, I think there's something more to that. Just the way it was worded.. Remember my last, Petunia. It's a little.. odd. And it doesn't explicitly state "remember my last letter, Petunia, the one that I left with Harry which sealed the pact". I'm curious to find out more about Petunia and exactly how much she knows about the wizarding world.

I'm also curious about Snape; what made him leave the dark side, why Dumbledore trusts him so much, why he protects Harry's life yet makes it a living hell, why he has been refused the Defence Against the Dark Arts position for all these years (though I'm pretty sure it's cuz Dumbledore just doesn't want Snape to be involved with that kind of stuff again).

Overall.. hmm, yeah, nothing much happened in this book. And when Dumbledore said to Harry, "I'm going to tell you everything".. I was expecting some huge 'WHOA' revelation.. but it was just blah blah about the prophecy.

Can't wait until Prisoner of Azkaban comes out on film though!! :excited:!! (The books are better but this is my fave!!)

gee you're slow, xiaoli....

:bleh:

but i agree with you on your comment about nothing happening in 5th book. it's just a series of events that in my opinion, didn't reveal anything significantly new to us...the characters don't grow in any way, and the only thing that actually happened was that sirius died. blah. pointless.

about Snape...yeah, a lot of mystery surrounding him...but i'm sure we'll learn more about his past and motives in the future books....hopefully.

I've only read phoenix once...can't be bothered to re-read it...although i just got a copy for my b-day

can't wait of Azkaban to be released as well!! :excited: that's my fave too! :yeah:

Wow. I went to visit some Harry Potter forum and those people are obsessed. They know EVERYTHING. But I did pick up a lot of interesting tidbits. Sirius didn't die because of the killing curse -- that would have produced a green light -- instead, he died cuz he fell through the veil! So I'm sure he'll be back in some weird way..

Isn't Ron so cute? His lil crush on Hermione.. and he doesn't even know it yet. :D

awww fellow Australians have to wait longer...i agree it totally sucks with there not being a worldwide premiere of Harry POtter, but oh wells...i doubt ill be seeing the movie when its in the cinemas...hmmms...i wonder if all the actors have grown so much that they dont fit their characters anymore..because i read a while ago that Daniel Radcliff [sorry if i spelt it wrong], looked too mature or grown for Harry. But nonetheless, i still support the Harry Potter books, and i also heard from a television show on movie updates, that the "Goblet of Fire" is going to be released shortly after the POA, they said its not going to take as long as it did this time. I wonder why, because the Goblet of Fire is a very long book compared to the POA. ehehhe...Back then they also said that the Goblet of Fire was going to be split up or something, but i guess its all just rumors...but considering its length, its going to be a pretty loooooong movie...
anyhows...thanks for the update 'Nupengyou' :yeah: on when HP going to be released in Australia.

Do you guys really think that he'll come back becaue I think J.K made it clear on some interview that she wasn't going to bring him back and that's why she cried after she wrote the part where she kills him off.

Oh and I find Ron really cute in the books and in the movies. Who's your favourite character? I like Hagrid but only in the books and I like Ron the most in the movies.

Fantasy_Surrealism

ooo...i dont have a favourite character, but i too reckon that Ron is pretty cute, hes so clumsy, but really cute, just seems so hilarious watching him, and i really admire him in alot of times throughout the book. i personally like reading the books better than watching the movie, except!..lol..always an exception, when i start reading the books again, because ive watched the movie, i can actually imagine all the actors and actresses, brings more imagination into the book i guess, before that everyone was guessing what Harry might look like..lol..

Oh grudge...

Anyway, I do loathe Umbridge...hehe  ...in the Mis Lot-of-Nerve pageant she'll win First, Second AND Third Prize  ...ass lady...Dumbledore shouldn't have rescued her from the centaurs man...she DESERVES to be dead meat  ....

lol, i love the HP series! So far I'm caught up in reading all the books, although I've forgotten pretty much all that happened in 2,3, and 4. I remember reading 5 in the fall, and it kept mentioning his classmate's death, and I didn't remember it all, lol, nor the dragon battles. I can't wait to see the POA; that should be interesting.

Oh my lord, i have just spent the last couple of hours (when i should be writing my final papers that are due scarily soon) reading this harry potter fan fic. i'm not usually a fan fic reader, but somehow i was just browsing through winglin for something to read to take my mind of things for awhile, and i saw a harry potter fan fic posted there.

Naturally, my interest was piqued, (considering everything else there was like S.H.E and Edison and Comic Boys or something like that ) and I went to check it out....
especially since the "subjects" were Malfroy and Hermione....

Initially, I was like WTH, what on earth could someone come up with about the 2 of them?!?!?!
But I started reading it, and it was a very well written story, very captivating...!!!!

Let's just say that i'll have problems dissociating this story from my mind the when i read the next book that'll be out. this story is meant to be for when they are 6th years at Hogwarts....so its somewhat like a continuation of book 5. though i don't believe there are many references made to the order of phoenix. lots of references to goblet though....

so do check it out if you're free, i think its a pretty good read!!!!!!

Is HP5 (the movie) out in America yet? It's out on June 10 in Australia! Woohoo! lol

Sirius technically isn't dead yet, he just fell through the veil... so he could come back... and abt the 3rd movie, i CAN'T wait to see it... my friend is taking us on her birthday, it's gonna be awesome! the only problem is, it'll ruin my picture in my head of Sirius and Remus, but w/e...

i think he IS dead, cause isnt the other side of the veil where all the wizards who have died r? anyway, b nice if everyone had a mistake and sirius had come back to the living. can u believe until book 5 i was reading his as 'Cyrus' instead of 'Serious?' lol, and when i talked bout it to my friends they were like, 'who's that?' :?
yeah cho chang girl isnt pretty, they shouldve so chosen someone else, i wonder what they'll do for dumbledore?

thanx for the pic xiaoli! :)

erm...i've always imagined cho as more western....well, yeah asian essentially, but not so asian looking...if you know what i mean. and i've always imagined her to have brownish hair....dyed....dunno why.
and yeah, she's not as pretty as i thought she'd be. but perhaps she'd look better in the movie.

and yeah....i've seen what sirius looks like and he's not what i imagined either. to me he should be medium built rather than thin built. it sorta gives him more of a powerful and intimidating look that goes with being a 'murderer' and death eater.
and about whether he'll be resurrected, i'm sure Rowling has made it clear, from her interviews, that he really is dead.

haven't seen what lupin looks like yet, but he's one of my fave characters so hopefully it won't be too disappointing. :worry:

xiaoli

The book actually says that Cho has long black silky hair. ehehe.

I think I've seen both Lupin in some preview caps when I was looking around the net for Harry Potter stuff.. anyway, both Lupin and Sirius look older and sterner than how I pictured. Nah I think it's alright if Sirius is thin built. He did stay in Azkaban for 12 years...

ker_ai_teresa
05-24-2004, 01:19 PM
oh...hmm....i think i imagined her with brown hair coz i've always thought of her as korean...like BoA....

about sirius, yeah....but being so thin doesn't make him look very scary or intimidating. and a stern lupin? uh-oh....

sigh....they ruined the almost-perfect image i had of Lupin...he has a moustache in the movie i tink, and he looks so old! i had thot he'd be a young guy, but looked alittle more mature coz of his encounters with werewolfism, but he ended up an old man... :glug:

and yeah, sirius is thin!!

"At the Edinburgh International Book Festival in Scotland Sunday, J.K. Rowling revealed some snippets of information about the upcoming sixth book, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince." She said the plot revolves around two questions: Why didn't Voldemort die when he tried to kill Harry? and Why didn't Dumbledore try to kill Voldemort?. Over 500 fans had tickets to attend the author's public reading of "Order of the Phoenix" and book signing." :wink2:
