View Full Version : [HK Movie] New Police Story

there's been a lot of hype about it cuz it's like a "comeback" movie cuz of the old Police Story series and Charlie Yeung getting back into the HK industry. i've never seen the old Police Story series, but i enjoyed this film. it stars Jackie Chan, Nicholas Tse, Charlie Yeung, Charlene Choi, Daniel Wu, and more. it was action-packed, but there was a plot, too. i don't wanna give too much away for those who haven't seen it. i thought the "gaming" thing was very creative, though really crazy when you think about it. i can't believe people can go to such means to "battle" their "enemies". :glug: the significance of Nic's jacket and why he aspires to be a cop is quite touching. =) i thought Jackie and Charlie acted well as a couple and you see a more "emotional" side of Jackie in this film. i thought Charlene's role was pretty pointless. Daniel fared well as the leader of the "villains" in this movie. great acting overall and all the stunts kept me on the edge of my seat. :bleh:
has anyone else seen this movie? :D

Me Me! :bounce:
personally the first thing that struck me when I watched the so was "gee, jackie chan has aged". it's just had to associate him with charlie young whos so much younger than he is? And I think Jackie really needs to work on "emoting" his face. when he tries to act guilty/lovey-dovey... it just doesn't come out right. It somehow looks constipated.
I was quite pleasantly surprised at Dave wang's guest starring. I miss him in broody, semi-bad guy roles. He's so natural in them.
I sorta like Nic better now... the silly grin really worked for me  and DANIEL WU!!! he's the man! especially when he assembles the gun
me! i really like this movie.. im not sure if ive watched the old police story but ive probably watched all of jackie's movies.. im not a big fan of his but i really like how creative jackie chan films are made.. i really enjoyed the movie.. everything in it except for the killing parts.. but that's basically part of action movies.. nicolas was great too!!
ME!
This is my first and only midnight movie so far.
I kinda changed my impression of Nicholas Tse after this. I dunno why but he just didn't interest me much in the past, but I'm impressed with his humour in the movie.
I always watch Jackie's movies and his choreography remains impressive. Also retains the mixed humour and action style of his movies.
I like Charlie Yeung, kinda missed her and she still looks so good. And Daniel Wu is always so cute even if he's the baddie. But it seemed to me the baddies were caught too easily in the end when they were deemed so hard to capture in the front.

But it seemed to me the baddies were caught too easily in the end when they were deemed so hard to capture in the front.
Well... you see, the started off introducing the good guys (ie jackie) as really intelligent and skilled... cream of the crop, close to perfection yada yada... There's not way to really improve on them to turn the tables around...
So as a writer of the script, probably the easy way out is to make the enemies dumb all of a sudden

lattae: yeah, i was surprised that Dave Wang was in this. didn't know that beforehand. but he played his part well. and i agree with you about the "aged" Jackie. that struck out at me as well. not just by pairing him with Charlie, but him being partnered with Nic. :bleh: i've always liked Nic's acting. his other recent movie i've seen is Moving Targets. =) i think he did his part well here though he looks so goofy in that jacket. and yes, daniel wu looks great here. now, where's vun?
jes: i haven't seen that many Jackie movies cuz i can't say i'm a big fan of his. i only watched this cuz of Nic mostly. but i guess this Police Story series is supposed to be good cuz of all the hype about it. the killing part was whoa :glug: for me at the beginning even though i had read about the plot of the movie before watching it...
ankh: yeah... Nic's pretty good with the funny stuff. and serious stuff or roles that require him to look cool and charming. :shifty: i liked the NGs at the end. some of the mess-ups were so funny! i have to agree with ya that the choreography of actions was excellent in this movie. i've been impressed with Jackie's stuff before, but this one i was very impressed with. not sure if it's cuz the actions were done so well or if things just flowed fairly smoothly in the movie so the impact was maximized. =D i haven't seen Charlie in ages, so it was nice to see her again. she still looks very pretty.
spoilers in white font:
about how the baddies were capture too easily at the end... i think it wasn't that they got dumb, but there were other factors that came into play. for one thing, Jackie wasn't in top shape at the beginning in his first brush with those bad guys. he was faced with the life/death of his team members. hence, he "lost" during those rounds cuz of distractions. the bad guys were prepared for them and we find out why/how in the middle of the movie. that's why they had an upper edge. but at the end of the movie, Jackie's ready for them because he must capture them and solve the case. when those bad guys were at the exhibition place, they got a bit shoken up because there are so many people there (not to mention their parents). that's why not all of them wanna support Daniel. and of course at the end, Daniel just wanna give in cuz of all the trauma he had growing up.

i watched this too....the mandarin version though, so i didn't get to hear daniel's voice. (darn)
he makes a really cute villian though :-) (gosh i sound so superficial)
the one thing i really didn't like about the show was jackie chan...
or rather, the way he was the hero that saves the day....
i mean, there were points where the plot is really too ludicrous to be true, and it was done that way just to showcase jackie chan....and hero-fy him.
(i think i've complained about this before in the daniel wu thread)
just like the scene with the runwaway bus - i thought that scene was really stretching it
i mean, after the bus driver was shot, couldn't one of the other passengers in the bus think of going to the front and just lifting the driver's foot off the accelerator or just jamming the brake????
but no....the bus had to ram through the streets of hongkong, destroy a million things in the process...just so that jackie chan can do some impossible flying stunt around the bus and ultimately culminating in him swinging through the window of the top of the double decker bus, running downstairs and jamming the brake.
i thought nic tse was pretty good in this movie too....
he looked a lot skinnier than i remembered though.....

Alright baby... I am beginning to see nic tse lovers budding outta us
I never quite used to like him... but like daniel wu, I've been growing to think they are cute with recent movies

This movie was really nice...and funny as hell as well!
The reason why i wanted to watch this movie at first was becoz of..well, Daniel Wu.I have always liked seeing him playing the bad guy. I thought it was ok if the movie wasnt nice, as long as i get to see hot guys (i like Terrance Yin as well.He was the bad guy with red hair if i'm not mistaken) .But wooO..it was really worth watching! My friends and i had even planned to watch it for the second time, but we didnt though.
I used to dislike Nicholas Tse, but i have to say that after watching how funny and err cute he was in the movie, he's ok to me now. Guess he isnt a bad actor/singer afterall. And Charlie Yeung..i havent seen her in any movies for soooo long.I heard that she has been away from the entertainment scene for 10 years before coming back and be a part of New Police Story.I like watching her too..she's cute though i can see she's getting old.
Anyway, the part of the movie that i liked was when everybody in the police station pretended they didnt see Nicholas and Jackie's characters who have escaped from the prison. That scene was extremely funny.

Haha. Yea. That scene was really funny. I really liked the movie. The one part that I didnt like was the beginning. I thought Jackie Chan was crying way too much. His character seemed to change too much just in that one scene. But everything else was cool. Nicholas was extremely funny. The ending was really sad too...and the lil mini story at the end of the movie was very touching..

i just watched this movie... overall it's good... i don't like the over the top action sequences too much... Jackie actually acted more in this movie (which i think is the first time)... i watch it mostly because daniel's in it... his acting is exceptional (since he did win an award for his role)... i like nic's character cause he's like the comic relief in this movie... i also like that scene when nic and jackie tries to escape... i find some scenes kind of long a dragging, but the whole movie was still entertaining even though it's a bit long.
im so late on this :shifty: ...
i just watched it and its really really good!!! Nicholas is sooo hot  it was a pretty good storyline and everything, the villain was played really good, overall i loved it!!!

I would say the storyline is the best of Jackie chan's movie for a while... of late, he's been producing slapstick and all :P

12-14-2004, 05:19 AM
^ yup, i agree with lattae. some of jackie's recent movies don't have much of a plot.
i think that scene with everyone acting "invisible" to jackie and nic is probably one of my faves of the movie. and like i said in my first post, i think the explanation on why nic treasures that jacket at the end of the movie was a nice touch. the NGs were so funny, too! especially that part where jackie was in the hospital and his boss (the actor's real name in cantonese is Liu Kai Chi) said "audience" (like in a live game show) instead of citizens.

Me i just saw this movie i really like it .........but the start of kinda sad though ............. it was kinda evil how the hung all those police men up and drop them down you know that part yeah ..................... well after seeing this movie i become to like nic tse more he was liek the funny character in the moive hahaha plus he looked so hot in it

lisa : totally agree!... that "invisible" scene was the funniest part in the movie... the last part was very touching... this is one of the best jackie chan film i've seen in a long time... everyone did an excellent job acting their parts.

totally loved this movie. one of my personal faves...my 2nd face chinese movie (after infernal affairs). glad to see jackie ACTING instead of fight fight and fight. =] i loved nicholas's character so much! so cute! and daniel was great also[HOT!]
and i agree with most of you guys, loved the "invisible" scene! i was cracking up. :D
wackycashew
12-19-2004, 05:19 PM
i also thought the part where nic was trying to help stop the bus was nicely shot... how he ended up in the water with a bunch of duckies (for funny/cute effect) in contrast to the heart-racing scene with the bus and its screaming passengers and jackie thinking that he might have lost another working partner. =0
and the part where jackie and charlie thought they had escaped from the bomb only to find that there was a strand attached to charlie's shirt... what led up to that was a touching scene and it was so suspenseful in terms of what was to happen. the ending when charlie was leaving the hospital was touching as well.
daniel played a very good bad guy here. when i saw the beginning, i couldn't believe that these rich kids thought that taking down the cops was a fun game, much like a video game. :glug:

oh yes i remember seeing this movie.
ITS THE SADEST THING. if you've seen the part where 'his crew gets hang' and he 'loses all his friends/crew' then you know what im talking about. but thats like the worst thing to lose everyone on your team. --SADNESS-- the creative part was the 'gaming' like wackycashew said. it was a lot of action and thrilling parts. the end was very touching! overall, the movie was good. its been so long since i've watched these kind of police movies. very good! :)

I liked this movie too action packed and a few hotties :-) in there too. but can you imagine if kids like that thought killing is fun like video games eek scary. I just had to laugh :D at the parts when nic says 'your the man' or something to that effect. I am just glad jackie has come back to do more HK movies...but that bus scene is such a typical jackie/police story thing hmm seems he is re-living that again :wink2:

daniel was hot in this movie...even tho hes da bad guy....the actions all seem a bit unreal...Nic Tse was oki ..this movie wasnt as good as the previews lol
i enjoyed the show alot. although i just cant help but think, doesn't jackie's girlfriend in the movie is so much younger than him that she seems like his daughter? :P haha. the "gaming" part was definitely crazy, yet kinda.. err.. violent in a sense. i thought the most exciting part was the part in the warehouse, after that, the action kinda went on a downhill.

Wow, I'm a bite late on this!
I thought the movie was entertaining and worth 1.5 hours or whatever time it took out of my schedule. The invisible scene was definitely funny and I found Nic's character to be kinda "happy" or non-straight! haha.
I do love the story with the trench coat or whatever.
One thing I love about the movie is one of the villain's hair, Andy On who is the blonde guy. He was I think, the second last guy remaining who does the hand to hand combat etc. He starred in black mask 2 but, his hair is really cool and I liked the action scenes with him and Jackie.

This was a great movie and i wouldnt mind watching it again!
Daniel Wu looked very very very good in it and yarr, the bad guy looked suited him very well!!! but he had quite a depressing role.
but overall, this movie was great and i would really recommend people to watch it.
i didnt understand the ending, but then i realised =D hahaha... it was all about the coat. i thought jackie wore the coat nic left over... but nooooo
oh, and the blooopers were a crack up =Þ !!!

Ooooooooooooooooooh ooooooooooooooooh oooooooooooooh.
RAE HAS SEEN THIS MOVIE!!!
Yesterday too! XDDD
Nic Tse looked REALLY good I have to say first off. XD
Anyways... the plot was nice in my opinion and all the actors/actresses did a DECENT and GOOD job. ^^
But..... Daniel Wu... at the end... that was SAD...........
and the JACKET. I didn't understand that for awhile, but then I realized what it meant.

Hmm...better late than never right? :D
I saw it recently...I enjoyed watching it  The beginning looked so sad though, and yeah, Jackie Chan was more emotional in this movie. The bad guys were really twisted  But Daniel Wu played his part well, because he was really freaky.
I thought Nicholas' character was cute, because he was so optimistic and encouraging...but yeah, Charlene's role was sorta pointless, except for the whole helping-with-info thing, which could have been done by anyone else, but..meh. The jacket thing was also quite interesting...but the movie leaves me wondering what would happen to Nicholas afterwards. Would he just go to jail? I like to believe that Jackie will bail him out and make him to go through police training so they can partner up :D They make such a great team

I am one of the late pple too. Haha! I just caught it at my friend's place last saturday. Well, it was rather entertaining! I tot Jackie Chan's team had some rather cute guys. Teehee! Especially his girlfriend's brother.
But Daniel Wu had some pretty good acting in this! Whoo!
i liked the movie! and daniel acted so well! thats why he got the best supporting actor! lol~ but i think the movie is an improvement compared to the other jackie chan movies. kungfu hustle is not bad too. do catch it if you haven k!

yeah yeah yeah!! DANIEL was woo-hoooo! though he was the villian BUT hes just sooooo CUTE!
ohh boy. ive never noticed him that much. until now, then i realised he acted in Hidden Track and Twins Effect2. lol.
and his smile..totally melts my heart. haha
so SWEET.
anyway, ive just watched the New Police Story recently cos ive got the vcd, and it wasnt a bad choice buying it!! in fact its 1 of my FAVOURITE movies now!
its really cool, and unpredictable. kind of.
especially the part where jackie's WHOLE squad got killed and hung up. it was rather gruesome but exciting.
and the way those X-gamers kill the police, they're just so GOOD! man.
its definitely a RECOMMENDED show. very good. GOOD!

I liked this movie as well. Although I didn't really like Jackie Chan, I have to say that he did pretty good. It was quite touching when Charlie and Jackie was in the room with a boom wrapped around her. She asked him if he still loves her. *sniff* it almost made me tear.
NIC TSE<3 is hot. Really really hot. I love how he's so innocent, while Daniel is the bad guy. Daniel<3 is jus too sexy hehe didn't realize how hot he was until I saw this movie. Oh I love it when he speaks Chinese hehe
i just realised i like it when handsome guys act as bad guys! haha! the bad boy thing is really appealling to me!
I have to admit I love the older Jackie Chan movies. New Police Story was pretty good but wasn't as great as his older shows. Oh man, I'm just showing my age

woah!! i watched New Police Story and i really liked it!!! i thought everyones acting was really good and the whole plot of the story was just great!! the film overall was just really good!!... :D
i especially liked the way they built the whole game thing like wackeycashew said ... i think it was a very smart idea and then if they finished the level on the game it would give them a clue to their next robbery!!!
i also thought the Nic Tse jaket story and where Jackie and Charlie were in the room together and Charlie had the bomb ... those were very touching moments!! they made me cry

yup i saw it!
its acutally pretty good=P ou know what, there wasnt really much that you couldnt like...
it had an interesting plot, a well selected cast, daniel wu and nic tse=P, and amazing stunts!
the proposal, the ending about nic tse's past were both quite touching...
nic tse was so cute when he wears that jacket! its like this little boy ina massive jacket jumping around, he was so adorable!=P
and after watching this.. i hereby conclude that daniel wu is a better actor when he plays the bad-guy!=P
daniel was sooooo hott in that film!! he plays such a good villian!!!!

This was such a great movie. :D
I loved how Jackie Chan decided to show some diversity and angsted a bit. xD; I dunno, there's just something about angst that appeals to me.
As a die-hard Nic fan, I naturally loved his performance to no end. He was great in this movie. ;D I personally like it when he's being all hardxcore and sauve -- but that's mostly due to hotness factor. But the way he acted -- it was just so *real* and *human*. It was something tangible; palpable. Not overdone. I wish they elaborated a little more on the storyline.
It felt like they fell short with explaining things -- especially in regards to Daniel Wu, who was abused/molested by his father >_> I wish they expanded on the storylines, or just didn't explain it at all. X_X;;; You're all right though. Daniel was totally hot in this movie. XD; I liked him in Bishonen too. >D Then again, I like him in any movie. Especially if it's in a movie with either Nic or Stephen Fung.

saw this movie a while back. (and i've seen it 5 times now. haha)
great movie! so used to seeing jackie in hollywood comedy movies, that i've almost forgotten his dramatic and emotional abilities. he teamed up pretty well with nic. nic was so funny in the movie. glad to see he didn't play his usual "cool and quiet" role. and daniel wu - wow! his acting has come a long way and it really hit home this time!
i also liked the special effects and music. good good movie ^_^

OMG I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! My mom bought a copy home and I watched it and every time I'm bored at home with someone I pop it in and make them watch it. There are some parts that are kinda drawn out if you see it too many times...but it's so good!!
I showed it to all of my cousins and the love it! They've even asked for a copy and suggested it to their friends.
I suggest it. :D GO WATCH IT! SO GREAT!

Lattae, so agree! I found him so suitable for such kind of a role! Not that i've seen many movies with him, but as far as i reckon he's never played funny roles before.
and in this movie even my Mom liked him!
that "careless" look suits him too. and that coat he was wearing all the time...:D

Yeah... I think we are all sick of Nic Tse in "act suave" roles... He's affable, yet still pretty charming with that tinge of mischieve... Good change from the usual bad-boy stuff...
wackycashew
01-25-2005, 06:32 PM
haha yeah... i've seen a number of nic movies and he usually is supposed to look cool and suave and that's about it. i personally like nic and think he has great potential as an actor. he could definitely try other roles besides the ones that he's been slotted in.
one thing i'm still stunned about is how the 'bad' guys were able to kill people as a game. :glug: could being rich and being neglected by parents push you to do such things? is it like the feeling/attitude of "if i can't be in the spotlight for something good, then why not something bad?"

definitely! it's a psychological thing that affects more and more children and adolescence these days, and in most cases, it follows them into adulthood.
any attention, is good attention, as long as they're getting it.

nic and his character's father having problems? the most recent one i can think of would be the nic and edision movie "moving targets". nic's dad in the movie was simon yam. is that the one you meant? :?

I watched this movie, I think the end of July. It was part humorous and part ok. I just could look at the killing stuff. I was always cringing at the sight of those policemen.
I also agree with Lattae, you really can notice how Jacky chan has grown older. It was always weird to see him in a love story scene/ drama scene. I always think of him in comedy.

I saw this movie and heard that it had wo na few awards, it was alright, but the english of the bad guys seemed really strange and those clown costumes they had when they killed the cops were funny looking, also I found the cop killing part and the game really disturbing
can someone explain why the bad guy shot the girl when she was wounded but still alive?

can someone explain why the bad guy shot the girl when she was wounded but still alive? It was the humane thing to do in the eyes of Daniel Wu. (His name in the movie escapes me at the moment.) His girlfriend was severely wounded, and he didn't want to see her suffer, so he killed her, giving her a quick death instead of drawing it out. It was either that or he figured she was a liability since she allowed herself to get injured so badly so easily (and because she screwed up before).
