Most Coveted Award!
David Tao Beats Jay Chou to Bring Home Best Golden Melody Award
The two R&B princes, David Tao and Jay Chou, met again during the TVB8 award ceremony. In the end, the 'senior', David, took home the coveted award of the Best Golden Melody, proving that experience does counts, and narrowly beats his 'junior', Jay, who also went home with three trophies.

The 2002 TVB8 Music Awards was held at 8pm yesterday (01-12-2002) at the No.1 Studio in TVB, Hong Kong.

Among the 50 awards giev out yesterday, 6 of the wards were taken by David and Jay.

During the awards ceremony, the two talented artistes, whom the media always pit one against the other, were both in the media limelight. The 'battle' between the two thus becomes the focus of the media. In the 'first round', both Jay's Unable to Say and David's Black Tangerine were both awarded the 'Golden Melody Award'.

After that, Jay also won the 'Best Composition' award based on the same song, while David won the 'Best Production' award, and thus they were on par.

Being the darling of the media, Jay was later voted to be the 'Media's Favorite Male Singer'. However, David managed to take down the most coveted award of the night, the 'Best Golden Melody' award, and narrowly win his 'junior'!

The other high profile awards, the 'Most Popular Male/Female Artiste' awards, were taken by the Hong Kongers, namely Eason Chen and Kelly Chen.

Other than Jay and David, the pioneer in Taiwanese rock, Wu Bai and his band China Blue, also took home 4 awards, inlcuding best band, and was the biggest winner of yesterday's awards.

David's Afraid of Losing, Didn't Dare to Play Basketball with Jay

David maintains,"I'm friends with Jay, but I will never play basketball with him." While Jay declares he had great ambition, and hopes to win the 'Most Popular Male Artiste' award next year.

Always a target of media comparision with Jay, David commented after the awards ceremony that he didn't care about such comparision. That's because he doesn't really care about winning awards, he just cared about the spreading of love and peace thru his music. Winning an award simply mean his message was 'accepted/recieved by others'.

David said," I met Jay's mom during Jay's concert this year. Being the devouted Christian she is, she not only gave me a Bible, she also hoped I could convey more bible knowledge to Jay."
(MacDawn's Note: I supposed this answers the question about Jay's religion.... I did read somewhere his mom is Christian, so he should be one too, althought I think he is not a particularly devouted one.... and NO, he is not a Roman Catholic... his mom would have killed him....)

From David's interview, the relationship between Jay and David was not as bad as what the media described.

But when asked if he would play basketball with Jay, David answered no... Perhaps???

David laughed,"Because he is too good at it, I will lose really badly!"

When interviewed, Jay said that he felt the 'Best Composition' award was meaningful to him, because he had started out as a music composer.

Jay also stated that he hoped to win the most popular male artiste award next year.

MacDawn's Footnote:
This is one of the Chinese articles I saw today. Thought it was pretty interesting, so I put it up first. There was a post a while back asking what religion Jay belonged to, I guess part of this article would have answered the question.

I remembered seeing an interview a while bac
k,

before his Taiwanese concert, that Jay had used joss-sticks to pray for a smooth concert. And Jay had commented that his mom had expressed that she doesn't like Jay to touch those 'th

ings of supersitious nature'. that gave me the impression, his mom is a Christian....

This is part of an article I saw, the main body of the article was about the music awards, mainly about the biggest winner Wu Bai, but there was a bit of news on Jay.... But they are not too good news..... His back is giving him problems again....

The two biggest winners at the TVB8 Music Awards last night could be more different.

While one (Wu Bai) couldn't wait to sprint off the stage once he received the award, the other (Jay) had difficulty getting himself on and off the stage.
...........................................

While Wu Bai was able to make his fast escape, Jay Chou couldn't get anywhere fast enough.

Trudged Up the Stairs

His spinal condition had acted up again, and he was in such pain before the ceremony that he could only take one step at a time, and was spotted trudging stiffly up the stairs to the studio where the event was taking place.

(When he came to Singapore last Sunday, Jay was also suffering from a sore bottom because of his spinal condition.)

The poor boy had to hobble his way onto the stage, and then limp off as fast as he could after his thank you speech. Speaking to the press after the ceremony, Jay said that it was his legs that were aching this time.

"It's because of the flight to Hong Kong. Fortunately, I brought my medicine, and I got better during the ceremony."

And while the 23-year-old received three awards, he lost out on the coveted Best Golden Melody Award to 'rival' David Tao.

If he was sore (we mean his loss, not his legs), Jay tried to hide it.

He said,"There's always next year, and either the Most Popular Male Singer or the Best Golden Melody Award would be nice."

And on the endless comparison between Jay and himself, David shrugged it off as being part and parcel of being a celebrity. He said,"You have to be able to take competition into your stride as a celebrity. If you can't, then don't be one. Anyway, there's one thing that I will never challenge Jay at - basketball. That I will lost terribly because he's such a good player!"

ohhhhhhhhhhh

:(

*rubs jay's back*

All better now!

Haha. Well.... yeah. It's really bad that his back is giving him so much pain. And he's so young as well. aiya.

From the article, I got the impression that he isn't religous... but was that just me? Or is he buddhist (joss sticks) hmm....

btw. who is wu bai? Is he any good?

wu bai is a taiwanese rocker.
he and his band "China Blue" won the awards...

he's been in a Movie with Nicholas Tse called "Time and Tide" which was targeted to a western audience.

heheh.. and the thing about how he wanted to get on and off quick is cause whenever he got up to accept an award, his speech everytime was:

"Rubbish talk, composition" (literally)
"Don't wanna say anything, music is more important" (meaning)

Yap, I got the impression he wasn't particularly religious.... Not the 'Thank god!' here and there kinda guy.... I think he followed his mom's religion as a matter of respecting her wishes... Kinda like the kind that is dragged to church, can sing hymms, but not really study the bible religiously kind....

Well, Jay's mom is trying to get David Tao to 'convert' Jay.... and David strikes me as the kind that would be talking to the heavenly-someone-up-there pretty often kind.... (Come on, he has one song in his 'Black Tangerine' album named Dear God....)

Sorry of I offended anyone.... I just dun happen to be David Tao's kind of people, never very religious. I have read the Bible, been to church, but I dun think I belonged there.... never mind, let's not make this discussion too 'holy'....

jus a small comment tho, even tho he's not religious, *n im a christian* bu at least he's true, he doesn't say "thank god blahblah" up on stage lyk all da other artists, if he realli doesn't believe it...i hear Britney Spears going on stage n going "thank god for this or else it would'v enever happened e.t.c" it's really fake, and it digusts me.

HAHA. That's funny.... hm. Maybe I'll check out some of his songs.

About jay's religon though... I guess it's really his choice. I mean, if you don't believe, you don't. I'm an atheist... But I think it's kind of sweet that his mom's trying to get him to believe. Shows that she cares :)
