For full rules & procedures click the following:

JCNET Karaoke Contest (http://www.jay-chou.net/karaoke_contest.php)

You may ask questions concerning the contest here. Please read thru the page first before asking something that's already answered.

I suggest you guys participating create a new thread to offer/get tips, help each other out, provide miscellanous instrumentals, etc. I know you're competing against each other, but it'd be nice if it was a friendly competition. And I also want everyone participating to do their best and make it tough for the people voting (because there'd be so many good ones to chose from)

But do not post your tracks in public YOURSELF for everyone to download. You will be disqualified.
Please read the Pre-submitting (http://www.jay-chou.net/karaoke_contest.php) section carefully on how you get feedback before final submittal.

Good luck and have fun everyone!
Deadline: Nov. 20, 2004

-----------------
Addendum: Yes you may increase/decrease the pitch of the song to match your voice better (read more in the karaoke contest page under rules section)

-----------------
Addendum 2: Don't try passing off someone else's karaoke as your own. People at JCNET are very resourceful, we'll find out. Just like how we know when people steal stranger's pictures and post them as their own. :shifty:

-----------------
Addendum 3: Added Wo Niu (Snail), Shi Jie Mo Ri (Armageddon), and You're Happier than Before (Ni Bi Cong Qian Kuai Le) back to the Jay song list.

i have one concern, what if you dont know how to use those fancy effects and filters to help you?? like my tool is basically the windows recorder which allows 1 min of recording time.

It really helps me when people read what I actually write so I don't repeat myself -_-

From the contest page:

Before you submit your final recording for voting, you can ask for help with mixing or cleaning it up.

Doesn't that imply I will help you with it if you don't know how?
Also it says you MAY use filters/effects, not that you have to.

like my tool is basically the windows recorder which allows 1 min of recording time.

Were you only going to submit a 1 minute recording?

Aside from singing the whole thing myself, I'll try to help everybody as best I can. Don't ask for too much though. (i.e. Don't give me 5 recordings and ask that I cut and paste from each one to make a complete track ).

Things I'll do:
1. Mix your vocal track to the instrumental (provided that you didn't sing at a different pitch or speed AND you give me your recording in one complete sing thru - not recorded in bits and pieces that I have to paste together)
2. Apply filters/effects to enhance it
3. Post it as many times needed for people to download so they can give feedback BEFORE Nov. 20

Well, if I'm singing in a different pitch and I sent you both my song and the altered version of the instrumental, would you be willing to help with applying filters and such? :-)

He is talking about the "Sound recorder" which is a program that comes default with windows. Its default setting is only 1 minute long, but you can extend that (its really not that hard if you look around at the very few options you have.

You can access this program in Windows XP by going:
Start > Programs > Accesories > Entertainment > Sound Recorder
Older versions of windows are probably very similar.

[1] Record 1 minute of anything. It doesn't matter since your final recording will go over this anyways.
[2] Go to "edit" and select "copy" (Advanced Windows users: Ctrl+C" also works here)
[3] Now go back to "edit" and select "paste insert" (Advanced Windows users: Ctrl+V" also works here)
-The file size on the clipboard will now be 2 minutes long. Keep pasting to add more minutes to the clipboard.

TIP: Add MORE than you need, its very frustating to sing for 4 minutes and then realize your file is too short by 10 seconds and you hafta re-record it again.

Now after you record, this is what you need to do to get rid of the extraneous time before and after your actualy recording.

[1] Play the file until you are at the point where you want to delete everything after it (so that would be basically the end of your song.
[2] Go to "edit" and select "Delete after current position"

Do the same thing if you want to delete everything before, just select "Delete before current position"

I really hope its not that hard to figure out -_-;;

Yes I can do that.

Hanzo, just download Goldwave so you can record it easier. That sounds complicated JDA >.<

Oh haha, if you play with it, you will realize its VERY easy to understand. I figured out how to record songs off internet radio using that in like 6th grade...the only problem is that the quality can be very bad...you need to play with the recording volume as well as the regular volume in general to get it right =/ But yea, just get goldwave if you can, its better than just regular sound recorder :bleh:

Answer: You can sing to whatever instrumental you want

hrm... i dled goldwave and used it to record some of my violin stuff, then i used sound recorder on the comp and recorded some stuff. i don't know about you guys, but my sound recorder had better quality than the goldwave program. maybe it's cuz i have a microfone installed in my computer *dell inspiron* but yeah. thnx for the making-length-longer tip JDA!! i didn't realize how to do it till i read your post :hugz:

edit: so if we submit something, does it have to be in mp3 format, or can it just be in the .wav format from when it was recorded?

Everyone please don't get all detailed about the requirements. Just record it and get it to me. Think of it like the same process you go through and same steps you made when you posted your karaokes for people to listen to in the past. (except here you don't post it, but you submit it to me)

Just don't infringe on the major rules:
1. Not singing a full song
2. Not singing one of the songs required
3. Not singing a second song
4. Not submitting on time

Don't ask me:
What if we're off the song by 10 seconds, is it considered full? (A: Use common sense, I'm not gonna disqualify you if you didn't sing one line, or forgot a word  )

Where do we upload it too? (A: I don't care)

What format does it have to be? (A: I don't care)

What if the file is too big? (A: I don't care)

Can the second song be in any language? (A: I don't care)

What if the song is only 2-3 minutes? (A: I don't care)

What if the song is only 10 minutes? (A: I don't care)

What if I want to sing an hour long operetta (A: I don't care)

What if I have my friends sing a little background vocal, is that ok? (A: I don't care, as long as it's not a duet)

Can I record myself from a KTV session (A: I don't care)

In other words, is it recently you singing? Is there music in the background? Then it'll be fine. Just get it to me. I'll let you know in the nicest way possible if something is wrong.

If there's any further questions and I don't answer, that means use common sense.
I won't yell at you if you make mistakes or didn't do something properly because I didn't specify it. This is just a fun contest, don't take it too seriously.

--------------------------------------
Contest extended, deadline: November 28, 2004
If you already have submitted, you may re-submit a revised version any time up until the due date.

just one question: If we're not supposed to send to you through email or MSN Messenger, how do you suppose we send it? (Other than Yahoo Briefcase?)?

thanks =)

shadowstorm: You upload your songs onto Yahoo Briefcase and send the links through Private Message to jayx8318x.
Hope that answers your question.

I just want to make a correction concerning the prizes.
Originally we had 1st place - $25 gift certificate to YesAsia.com
Well YesAsia only offers gift certs in the amounts of $30, $20, $10, etc. No $25.
So first place will get the choice between:

1. A gift certificate for $20
2. Jay's new book Grandeur de D Major
3. Any combination of Jay products equaling no more than $25 (tax included)

2nd place still gets $10 gift cert. And the pat on the back for 3rd place still stands...funds permitting -- it may have to be reduced to a mere thumbs up.

Shadowstorm: You'll find out anyway when the songs are posted up by Karen/jayx8318x for voting.
GeQian: The final results will be revealed after the 12 day poll finishes. All the rules and information is stated here (http://www.jay-chou.net/karaoke_contest.php)

There's just a little over a day left before the contest ends.
When this clock (http://time.gov/timezone.cgi?Central/d/-6) reads:
00:00:00
Monday, November 29, 2004

The contest closes, and entries go up for voting soon after.
(for those time-challenged people, 00:00:00 means midnight...in other words, 1 minute after 11:59 Sunday, November 28, 2004. For those of you in Singapore, it will be 2pm Nov. 29)

hi i was wondering...are newbies allowed to enter the competion? :D i onli just discovered this place yesterday!~

lattae
11-29-2004, 03:28 AM
There are no rules saying that newbies can't enter. So I guess, yes you can enter the contest, as long as you meet the dateline, which is like 3 hours odd from now

shadowstorm
11-29-2004, 06:43 AM
will you close the entry on the dot? it's 20 min to the deadline and the file is taking so long to upload,,

lattae
11-29-2004, 06:49 AM
well, if you can't meet the dateline as stipulated by the rules, then you can only count on good will/mercy of the judges.

shadowstorm
11-29-2004, 06:56 AM
phew.. i got to send the judge the link through PM in time now.. 5 min to the deadline.. but how would they know if i sent it on time?

lattae
11-29-2004, 06:57 AM
there is a date and time stamp on the PMs, just like it is in this post, that's why they will know.
