View Full Version : [Movie] The Grudge (The American Version)
I dont think there's a thread for this. Anyway, i saw the Japanese version (Ju-on The Grudge) with no subtitles and i was FREAKED out, well at the end. I want to see the American version with Sarach Michelle Gellar, i'm hoping it has the same effect on me as the Japanese Grudge. Has anyone seen it yet?
Do you have a Grudge..? http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/thegrudge/

Nope I've not.. but thinking of catching it soon sometime this week?! hmm I've never seen any horror movie in the cinemas before. :shifty: lol.
I'm hoping it'd not be too scary 'cos I don't want to be freaked out by the dark areas in the house or whatever.. I've jus gotten over my fear of dark. =/
Anyway my brother caught Ouja (sp?) Board and he said it was really scaryy. Now he's getting me to help me take things he need in darkly-lit rooms and stuff.. oh and also accompanying him to toilets. lol.
ok back to the point. i think the grudge will be okay.. :wink2: the little boy ghost seems asian. errr. nvm.
have yet to see the ratings. :-) see u around.

i havent watched it yet... im not quite sure if i want to, but it looks pretty interesting. although it didnt get exactly get the greatest reviews by the times, but i think it'll probably debut at number one.
in the newspaper, theres' a huge ad for it. and like it shows an eye with hair covering the face, and when im reading the newsies, i turn the page, and like it's like right there! always scares the heck out of me.
i heard it was about a husband kills his wife and son in a jealous rage. and so now, the mom and son together materialize and take turns killin anybody who enters the house, and you dont even have to be in the house to be bothered by them.
there's an opening scene, where an american real state agent is trying to sell the house to a man, wife, and his mothers. but when the real state agent enters the house, he sees the bathub full of murky water, so when he reaches to unplug it, the hand shoots out to grab him, which was in the commercial. the lil boy in the commercial is so scary

lol.. i got a shock when i saw the little boy at first. he seems to be screaming or shouting, whatever.. anyway the insides of his mouth is black and toothless. hmm but when you see it again, you'll prolly get used to it and not find it that scary anymore?!

i watched the japanese version of ju-on with chinese subtitles. for some reason it just didn't scare me. maybe hearing people talk is scarier than READING the dialogue?? i'm not sure. so yesterday i went to that website to play the game. but i totally freaked out when i started. haha i still want to watch it though.
it's weird that the US decided to make an american version using the same exact house/location. you'd think it'd be like the ring where they change stuff a little and make it their own. all these american people did was hire american lead actors and that's about it! it's odd.

I haven't seen the English version yet
but I heard the English version was scarier than the Japanese version
for someone who watched both? what did you think?
The problem with American movies is that it's so graphic-ized. I've seen Jun-On and I went to see the Grudge yesterday. The Grudge was so much more scarier because everything was so fake. >_____<" But it still scared the jeebies out of me I hate scary movies ah. ;____;
Ju-On wasn't that scary though... but like babyxv said, maybe reading subtitles just isnt' that scary.
holy crap when i scrolled down and saw your banner, Viv, i jumped. you can see i'm sort of a wuss haha. Yea, the first half of Ju-On wasnt that great, but at the end, i was clutching hard onto my cousin's arm. So The Grudge is scary? Woo-hoo, cant wait to see it.

Man! This movie is THE talk in school. I mean the minute I get into my homebase people are talking about it and during lunch and basically during everytime they could...I think I'm going to watch it this week but I know every single detail because of people talking about it...like SimpleBlackHumor89 said, it's about a husband who goes through a jealous rage after finding that his wife is kind of...obsessed with this professor, but they didn't do anything she just followed him around a lot...basically stalking him. So the husband kills the mother and the kid and it's said when you die with anger, you're spirit will live on, so their spirit lives and they kill anyone that enters the house. And Sarah Michelle Gellar is a volunteer nurse who goes to people's house who helps take care of them because they can't take care of themselves, and she's in Japan because her boyfriend is for some reason, I forgot. So the girl who's supposed to be at house, doesn't come back so SMG is the substitute for her and she goes into the house. Yeah...I don't want to spoil too much. =X

I WATCHED IT!
whoo~ heck. it wa scary. its kind of like the japanese version, but not really. BUT THE JAPANESE IS WAY SCARIER.It gets confusing though cause theres so many characters. The end was kind of odd.At the end did sarah michelle gellar die? It never showed. Isint there going to be a sequel ?But I dont want to spoil the fun, so go watch it yourself. But yeah, the azn little boy is soo SCARY. he's like a cat/boy. wierd. but its a good movie. Its so much better than the ring though. 10 Times worse btw. ^-^ and yeah. simplebackhumor89 and aznhkgrl basically told you the whole story. I hate the 'croaking' noises that the woman made. and the woman appearing under your bed sheets. FREAKY.

Hey people. I watched The Grudge too.
I think the original Japanese one will be scarier though I've not watched it. Anyway, The Grudge was okay, I guess. It didn't give me nightmares or gave me a phobia of going to toilets and stuff. So i conclude it's okay. :D
Hmmm but I find the story very confusing.. I think there were flashbacks and stuff and too many characters who all looked the same to me. I only understand the main plot (i hope) which is about this woman liking another man and she wrote about it in her diary which her husband read. Her husband flew into a rage after stumbling on the truth and he kills his wife and son. The tagteam mother and son ghosts comes back to haunt everyone. :hmm:
anyway The Grudge uses alot of cliched ghostly moves/tactics ie..
-phonecall
-upside down heads
-video
-crawling dwn stairs (like sedako)
-taps/sink (with hair)
-bathtub
-mirror?
-lifts
-zombie-like walking
-long tongue
-ghostly cracking/creaking sound [damn scary]
-tagteam mother and son ghosts
-under the blanket ghost (it looks like a particular photo from sfogs.com)
-the same ghost appearing in all your (choychoychoy) photos [hmm this reminds me of turn left turn right fer some reason]
that's all i can think of currenly. :wink2:
My friends and I were so freaked out when we went to the toilet after the movie.. We were happily discussing the movie when there was this LOUD CREAAAKKKING noise. It scared us out of our skins and we screamed like mad. But it was prolly the whirring sound of the fan.
yah that's all. I think if you're okay with horror movies, The Grudge should be able to provide you with some light scares. All the best and enjoy the movie with a bunch of friends!! =))

I just watched it last week, I think. It had a lot of different part from the original version. SMG with a boyfriend... However, I understood the movie better in the American version. It may be because I was not able to watch the start of the Japanese one... In terms of scariness, I liked the Japanese one better. They had the same scary characters but I still like the Japanese one.

i havent watched it yet, but i think i'll watch the jap version first, cos it's being sold at best buy. how is the jap version scarier, is it the pictures. is there alot of blood in boht versions of the movie, cos the ameircan version of the ring and a lil gore and it scared me to death.
oh yea, in the american version of the grudge, is their charcters with like a lil animation in it. cos i swear i saw two clips, one was a white boy, and he looked animated, and another one was of a dark figure with big animated eyes. am i mistaken?
I watched Juon ( which was the japanese version ) some time ago and i just watch The Grudge recently..I could only say"Everything was perfectly the same!" If u watch the japanese version.. u can know what will happen next and predict the whole show. I think they only change the character and translated it.
The little boy didnt look animated in the film... Only the woman in long hair does look a bit animated. a bit fake too at some part...

i wanted to watch the japanese version, b/c i heard it was scarier.
but then when my friend (who saw it already) told me about the american version..
she scared the crap outta me, and i haven't even seen it yet!
but then again...i am a scaredy cat
the last scary movie i saw was the ring...and that scared me.
so i decided not to see it...since i dont think scary movies are my thing..

i went to watch this movie yesterday and was very disappointed. i actually didn't want to watch it because i thought it would creep me out too much but it's NOT SCARY. the preview looked so good and it had so much potential! "when someone dies in a state of fury, a curse is born" or words to that effect. i found the story to be pretty average - no real twists or turns. there was this really annoying black cat - think that was supposed to be scary but it wasn't. waste of money, this movie. want to see the japanese version now - it has got to be better than this. (could go on dissing it but i'm sure someone who liked the movie is gonna bite my head off for it)
there was this scene with sarah michelle gellar flipping through a series of photos of peter and his wife and this japanese girl is in every photo because she was stalking him as a result of her infatuation. i've seen this scene soemwhere before - so unoriginal.
but seriously, last night i woke up at 4am and just started thinking about the movie and couldn't get back to sleep. not to say that that means it's a good movie...the ring was so much better.

hahahe i saw the movie last week and it turns out my bf is an expert at making that weird creepy eerie noise...freaked the crap out of me after the movie!!!
i think the only bit i was really scared in was ummm when sarah michelle gellar (dammit get a shorter name woman) was on the bus and she sees the reflection of that Kayako woman on the window......
freakin there were so many little kids like 12, 13 year olds that walked out screaming half way through the movie...i'm like, guys its M15 for a reason ok?
and then there were ppl that were talking almost all the way through the movie and this guy got the usherers to come in and then everyone shut up....
heheh but yeah i was pretty freaked some of the time....it reminded me of the ring though...typical japanese horror...

The show was typically scary...In SG it's only rated PG... Maybe they edited some gruesome parts as they always do...
The weird and scary sound was coincidentally, the same as the creaking toilet door in GV Bishan :D
Actually, it's kinda easy to make that sound... I kept doing it to scare my friends who in turn, did that to me too
Anyway, this remake was directed by the same director as it's original :wink2:

Oh geez... I was so freaked out after I came home from the movies with a few of my friends ^_^; It scared the shit out of us, but there were also a lot of lame parts in the American version as well... like... the graphics for whatever 'the grudge' was, was not scary at all... it's just like... 'okay, big black thing swarming on top of me with bad computer graphic eyes... ??' Even so, it did its job in scaring you ^_^ And I agree with FreaK, I kept thinking about the movie while taking a shower too... ::shivers:: I actually snuck into my parents' room one night because I was so scared of sleeping in my own room ::laughs::
Oh yeah... a friend pulled a prank on me the night after we watched The Grudge... she was like... "Uhhhhhhhh" the entire time on the phone x_x

i ended up seeing the grudge 3 times in theaters.
first time i got kicked out for some guy behind us throwing popcorn at people in front of us, and we got busted for it
2nd time, i saw the whole thing, and i was scared shitless cuz i got scared of EVERYTHING. bathtubs, corners of the room, hair, beds, windows, eyes, you name it
3rd time, i just went to scream like crazy for fun

yay i finally watched the movie, took awhile but i conquer my fear to watch it at my friend's house. lol . wasnt that scary  as i expected since i umm.. read about it from this and previous treads from this forum, lol.
so now after watchin it, still got some creepy clips of the movie in my heads. which makes me wonder sometime about it, cuz it seem like some parts needed to be questioned, lol or soemthing. but yeah, that sound " uhhh" sounds, eek  now everytime i would hear that kind of sound, it would always remind me of the grudge and might be givin me flashback of that movie, lol :shifty:

i watched it like last month. it wasnt that scary, the ring is scaries, and i didnt really get the movie. i thought the images of the wife looked real weird, it looked like anime or something. i thought there was some part that was realy grisly and gory, like the part of the japanese nurse comin back and walkin pass the dude. and the part where the woman was climbin down the stairs the blood looks almost pink!
not a good movie, america thinks that any japanese scary film that they take and redo, will be good, even if it's just done half as*ed
