Again ... has anyone posted this up yet? Just caught the movie yesterday. Think it's like a sequel to [In the Mood for Love].
Was quite disappointed that KimuTaku's role was small. But I think Zhang Ziyi did a good job in that movie. I never really liked her, but I think she looked really good in this movie.
Gong Li pales so much in comparison to her in this movie, you can see how much she has aged! Anyway, there is a lot of depth in this movie, share with us what you know about it, alright? As for me, I need to dwell on it for a while before I share what I think.
As usual ... WKW's movie always takes a long time to sink into you.
i haven't see this movie yet,the movie is not screen in my country yet...i plan to watch it soon ...
to found out why the director need 4 years to accomplish it??
i found the web page http://www.wkw2046.com/
kinda mystery...
about the director..i love his previous movie "Chong Xing Shen Ling" and "Fallen angel"

I have been waiting for this movie for years!!! And it's going to be shown here in manila on november. I'm so eager. I'm a HUGE wong kar wai fan. and In the Mood for Love is my favorite movie ever *swoons*
I am just curious how critics reviewed this. Some say House of Flying Daggers should have been China's entry for the Cannes since it was "better" but I was so disappointed with that movie.
but anyway, I'm still anticipating. I just know if it's WKW, it must be good. :bleh:

I have been waiting for this movie for years!!!
Ya, definitely 'years'! :D I'm thinking of getting the DVD when it's out cause Wong Kar Wai mentioned that there might be another chapter added in, more focused on Takuya + Faye's. Might be only... Given his style, anything can happen.
But I'm still looking forward to watch this.
khim: did you watch "In the mood for love"? That's nice too. At first I thought it'll be very moody and gloomy, but it's still the very same old Wong's style. "ChongKing Express"? My favourite too.

it is "Hau Yang Nian Hua". i doesn't like it well...maybe the quality of the vcd that i watch it a pirate vcd.. too blur and too noise...the vcd is not mine..
Rach, about "ChongKing Express" and "Fallen Angel" which part to u like ?
sorry for out of topic.. i wish to watch it soon...and discuss with u all :-)

hmmm, a bit out of topic.
khim: Regarding Chongking Xpress, I like the part Faye going to Tony Leung' house, esp when Tony came back, he was talking to the soap that 'turn fatter' overnight. :D And the song that Faye likes a lot. I watched it because of Takeshi, but ended up enjoying the Faye+Tony story more.
And for Fallen Angel, I only watched once, compared to Chongking Express (at least four times). I only remember the weird Karen Mok in it and the song played in the jukebox. How about you (or others)?
sorry, out of topic...

Awwwwwwwww!!!! Serious?! If that's the case, then I would most probably wanna get the DVD too.
I really think KimuTaku and Faye's story was too short. There was more focus on Tony himself. Even the train scene, it was more of Tony's story.
If you watch it, then you will know what I mean. I am still waiting for someone who has actually watched the movie to share his/her thoughts.

I think I must wait for the vcd, because I am a bit slow when it comes to things like that. I might not be able to catch the whole plot if I am in cinema

Wow! Wong Kar Wai fans! :excited:
I like "ChungKing Express" better than "Fallen Angels". There are just so many random moments that I'm very fond off. Those pineapple eating moments of Takeshi. That song constantly being played on Faye's and Tony's part. I think it was by the popular 60's group Mamas and Papas. My aunts listen to them a lot that's why I'm familiar.
It's hilarious seeing Tony in briefs talking to his towel, stuffed toy and soap. It was hilariously brilliant.
2046 seem to have the same melancholy that "In the Mood for Love" has. I still have the goosebumps whenever I see the trailer on TV or the movie house.
I heard that wacky singer Bird from Thailand has a cameo part for this too.

haha, i just downloaded this and hopefully i'll get to watch it soon after i'm done with my midterms!
though i gotta say i'm not very appreciative of these arty films though....
like i didn't really get chungking express at all.... there was no real plot to it, though people have told me that's the whole point to it
then again, i watched it when i was pretty young so i'm putting it off to my late mental development....

Whatever it is, it can't be more difficult to understand than [Happy Together/春光乍泄]. The whole movie is just about homosexuality. At least [2046] has some form of storyline.
You just have to read in between the lines. :brows:

i haven't watched this film, but everyone's been talking about it...
i wanted to see Kimu Taku and Tony the most!!
but can anyone give me a brief summary about this film??

i just watched this. i can't say i fully understand the movie, but i liked the cinematography. i think it's centered around love, relationships, commitment... it's set in the past as well as the future. people who ride on the train "2046" are trying to retrieve their memories because supposedly the memories stay intact in that time period. but no one who's gone has ever come back to verify this... except takuya kimura. so, i guess this memories untarnished thing is just a myth.
anyway, the story talks about tony leung, who's an author. he writes x-rated novels cuz those are the ones that'd sell. he puts up a facade to mingle with others. the movie talks about the women who have entered his life at various points... gong li, carina lau, zhang ziyi, faye wong... 2046 is also the room number of the hotel room that these women have stayed at one time or another. tony ended up living in 2047. the story he's writing is supposed to depict takuya cuz of faye (takuya and faye play love interests), but is in reality a portrayal of himself.
anyway, i'm not sure if i gave anything away. just trying to give some background on the movie.

i enjoyed the movie!
I liked the references to the train, it showed off this irony between what Tony (as Takuya) is doing, coming back from the future, which actually means his past, coz he puts in all these incidents that happen in real life, but instead as much as he's trying to escape from his past, he's still caught up in all these memories. Its like he can't forget Maggie Cheung as much as he wants to.
And i think he did fall in love with Faye wong, although he thought he was devoid of love, coz he saw her devotion for Takuya, tt's why he imagined himself to be a Japanese in his train story.
One thing though, where was Zhang Zhen? I only got a glance of him staring at Carina Lau in a pub at the beginning, and there was all the hype about a bed scene between them.
wackycashew
11-12-2004, 06:19 AM
Zhang Zhen was in a bed scene with Carina. somewhere in the middle of the movie, i think? and he was sad cuz after finishing with him, Carina proceed to go downstairs and do it with another guy. was she portraying a prostitute in this movie?
anyway, i think Tony fell for Faye as well. after reading your post, Angels, things are a bit more clear to me in terms of the storyline.

I finally managed to watch the movie. *phew*
I think that the whole story is about how Tony's love life and how he treated the women in his life. It all began with Su Li Zhen (Maggie Cheung), which then afterwhich the same name lady (Gong Li) appeared, then Zhang Zi Yi. Tony seems infatuated with the rest of the ladies, with the impression of the special lady in his life.
I guessed it's the same with the us. Normally if we've met the perfect one, but we've lost the chance, we'll be easily attracted to the next come-along if there's certain resemblance with the perfect one.
For Carina's character, I like the part where they showed her in 2046. She was crying, then after that, she smiled and continued her usual way of entertaining customers, seems like a way of escaping from reality, her pains.
Ya, I agree, Tony did fell in love with Faye. Perhaps after seeing her devotion for Takuya, and perhaps potraying her as a robot in 2046 is because she could not go for her love and was restricted by her dad, esp the way how she did not respond when Tak asked her to go with him.
roche: To tell the truth, I dont know about the actual plot in Chung King Express even I've watched it a few times. The reason I enjoyed it is because of the little things Faye did and Tony. Perhaps the movie is about acquaintance. Remember the way Takeshi likes to say he passed by who by dunno-how-many millimetres.

Carina was with Zhang ZHen? oh my...i couldn't have missed out that part. Was it when she got stabbed by her jealous boyfriend? or was the jealous bf Zhang Zhen? It was too dark you see.....
I liked the way the director put an emphasis on the actors footsteps. Like when he filmed Faye's footsteps while she was going on and on with her Japanese phrases. You could see her feelings from just watching the way she was piroutting (is there such a word?) and pivoting around on her feet.
hmm....i think Faye didn't respond to Takuya when she was in robot form coz he wasn't Takuya but Tony in that sense. And he thought that her non-responsivenss was because of her delayed reaction, but in the end he realized that it was because she already had someone (the real Takuya) in mind and not him (the fake Takuya with moustache), hence she didn't see the need to respond to him when he asked her to go away with him.

tks! i was really trying to figure out this situation and i think you got it pat. i am not a faye wong fan but somehow i think wong ka wai knows how to catalise faye with tony leung in a adverse sort of way . this movie is too subtle , i had to watch it carefully and still missed most of the storyline but reading your feedback makes me appreciate wong ka wai more . p.s gong li really looks aged and big besides zhang zhi zi . i loved gong li - watched all her movies by zhang zhi mou.
as usaul , tony leung carries the show - so sad to see him trying to be gay when his is so sad from maggie cheung and now loving faye who is in love with takayu .
p.s. i think tony here is as sad as he was with lesley cheung in " happy together " . that was a great movie too.

ok i FINALLY watched it.
and i don't get it.
all its seemed like was a 2 hour + long zhang ziyi fashion show.....she must have worn 20 different cheongsams or something!
and oh, plus we got to watch tony leung smooch pretty much ALL the A list actresses right now....from gong li to zhang ziyi to faye wong.
ah well.....i guess i just dont appreciate WKW's movies....
lisa was there actually a train called 2046? i thought it only existed in tony leung's novel....a figment of his imagination to channel his thoughts into....
what i got from it was that this fictional "train" was actually a manisfestation (kinda) of the room 2046, and the people who lived there. like carina lau, zhang ziyi.
the part about gong li happened in singapore? not too sure how that fit in though....
random thought - so i guess foreigners must think that zhang ziyi is the top actress in asia! i mean considering both this movie 2046 and house of flying daggers are both showed at the cannes film fest....and she's starring in both of them....

yeah...tt's right. I didn't understand why they had to include Singapore into the whole movie. What's with describing its weather and etc. There's supposed to be a significance to it. Anyone caught it?

Ok, I've seen it. FINALLY. that's what all I can say.
At the first minutes of the movie...I was having goosebumps, because I was overtaken by my fangirlness when Takuya spoke and mentioned my favorite lines on "In the Mood for love". and almost fainted when I saw him. JK. anyway, I really like the movie. Yes, I'm a sucker for really subdued momense. Wong Kar Wai makes subtle moments so immense you feel like you'll drown watching his images.
I'm not gonna go into detail about the rest of the movie, I feel like I'm not worth to criticize the master. lol.
I love the OST.

rochy: i agree with what you said. i think the '2046' train was just part of tony's novel. i don't think it's real.
and i think i'm missing some clues cuz i didn't watch 'In the Mood for Love'. so, i don't understand the whole relation with gong li and maggie cheung. but i'm guessing that gong li's character has the same name as maggie in 'In the Mood for Love'? that's why there was that brief scene with tony and maggie in the car? :?
kahel
12-14-2004, 06:26 AM
Lisa maggie, who shares the same name with gong li in 2046 was Tony's past love. Let me give a brief summary of In the Mood for Love....
Tony and Maggie, who are both married but not with each other, are neigbours. Through lovely meeting moments on the way to one noodleshop, they found out that Tony's wife and Maggie's husband are seeing each other. So they found solace in each other. They, in turn, tried to act like their respective husbands and wives. They want to trace how they fell in love. In turn, after a series of subtle moments, they found themselves falling for each other. Anyway, in the end Tony has decided to leave his wife and decided to go to Spore. He asked Maggie to come but she refused, in a dramatic, artistic way of course. lol. That scene in the car was a flashback of Tony and Maggie's rendezvous.
So Tony, went to Spore. Without his knowledge, Maggie followed him there...to check out his apartment...smoke the cigarettes he smoked, wore his slippers, lie in his bed. Thus the flashbacks of Maggie smoking and such.
Anyway, at the end of the movie, Tony went back to HK hoping to see Maggie, but when he returned to the place he rented before, a different woman was already renting the place. The woman has a kid. And he left without even trying to pry who the woman is, what he didn't know is that, it was Maggie.
Final scenes were in Cambodia wherein Tony whispered all his secrets in a wall and covered it with mud.
Gong Li chose to leave Tony because she felt that Tony was just seeing Maggie in her....meeting at the noodleshop, those moments on the alleys etc.
and yes, 2046 is just a fictional novel Tony was writing putting in the experiences he has in real life into fiction.

i was sooo looking forward to watching this movie! mainly coz of Tony L and WKW!! but i was quite disappointed after watching it. i only liked bits n pieces (mostly parts with tony n faye.. and the part where tony realizes his affection for faye ~). for some reason, i felt like it wasn't totally finished or that there was something missing... i dunno, i'm not a movie expert.. i just love watching movies~!! anywayz, i didn't enjoy the whole film.

i'm really looking forward to watch Takuya Kimura acting in this show.. :)
Hope you guys would tell me where to get this show..
thankS!
I've been wanting to see this movie because everyone is raving about WKW's style of directing. I'm confused though; I've read that he was very difficult to work with (but well worth it) and that this movie didnt really have script. Did the actors had to make up their dialogue or something?
I also heard the cinematography is absolutely gorgeous. I'm looking foward to watching it though not really happy zhang ziyi is in it. but takuya kimura and tony leung is : ).

NY times gave it a pretty rave review. it's weird how it's coming out on DVD but i watched it at a friends' house and she borrowed it from the library. i didn't understand it all. it may be because of the language barrier but seriously after watching that, my head hurt so bad.

I watched it in Irvine.. There are some Edwards/Regal theaters playing it, it's usually the ones that play independent and foreign films. You guys can find one playing by going to www.fandango.com
Hope this helps!
And I kind of have mixed feelings about the movie. It was hard to sit through cuz it was so long, and on top of that, the storyline & plot was really complex. But after it finished, I thought they wrapped it up really nicely. The directing was awesome too!!

A bit late but I just finished watching "In The Mood For Love" today.. and then I realized I had 2046's DVD so I decided to watch it too.. However, I am only halfway since my family started coming home
I'll talk about ITMFL first.. At first I thought I wouldn't like it but I guess before I watched it, I was aware that it would be an artistic film.. so I paid close attention to the artistic side of it.. and I have to say that it was a very artistic film.. just the various techniques they used to film it etc. It was interesting even though I am still a bit confused. My favorite part was towards the end when Maggie and Tony were out on the street.. and then Maggie started crying and was leaning on Tony's shoulder.. and then Tony said it's only a rehearsal..
2046. Before watching it, I was actually expecting it to be similar to ITMFL.. or I should say, as tame as ITMFL.. so the sex scenes of Tony and Zhang Zi Yi was a bit of a surprise.. and a bit too much  However, like some of you mentioned.. I thought Zhang Zi Yi did a great job too.. I don't know but she's very good at doing these type of roles? I thought her costumes were really nice though.
I knew Gong Li would be in this movie.. but I didn't know she was the first woman in the movie.. the one who was involved in Tony in Singapore.. I thought that was Zhang Zi Yi because they look a bit alike :shy:
