View Full Version : [Korean Archive]Han Gook beh wuh (Learn Korean!!)

Jess

Haha.. this thread is basically like the other thread, "Learn Japanese." I read in there that some people were interested in learning Korean, but no one really knew how... so I thought I would offer my Korean-speaking services!! :D There has got to be some advantage knowing some Korean and living in a Korean family.... so... basic words/phrases of today:

By the way, I don't know how to put korean in english words, so these are probably incorrect translations. I'm just typing them how you pronounce them, so please don't throw rocks at me if they're not perfectly translated into english words...

Ahn-nyung ha-seh-yo: Hello (formal)
Ahn-nyung: Hello (informal)
Yo-bo seh-yo: Hello? (as in answering the phone..)
Ahn-nyung-hee ga-seh-yo: Goodbye (if they're leaving)
Ahn-nyung-hee geh-seh-yo: Goodbye (if you're leaving)
Gam-sah hap-nee-da: Thank you
Ban-gap sup-nee-da: Nice to meet you (formal)
Bang-gah wuh: Nice to meet you (informal)
Byun-soh uh-dee-yip-nee-ga?: Where is the toilet?
Hwa-jang-shil uh-dee-ssuh?: Where is the bathroom?
Jeh-song hap-nee-dah: Sorry (formal)
Mee-yan-heh: Sorry (informal)
Ye: Yes
Ah-ni-yo: No
Cho-nun-____-im-ni-da: My name is ______.

Hahaha... that should get you through the introductions of a conversation. Tune in next time for "Han Gook beh wuh!!!" Hahahaha...

The grammer structure is similiar to Japanese, I believe.

What is the word for "Want" and "Eat" ?

What is the word for "I" ?

Is "want" "shi-po?"

dudett09
05-11-2003, 10:56 PM
i only know how to say stupid/ idiot and eraser in krn

stupid: pabo (i believe?)
eraser: Jee-u- Geh

and also AISH

Jess
05-11-2003, 11:13 PM
hahaha, lmao Chun Li... BASICALLY, your question is, how do you say, "I want to eat?"

Na: I
Shi-puh: Want
Muk-go: Eat
Na-bap muk-go shi-puh: I want to eat food
Muk-goo shi-puh: I want to eat
Bae-go-pah: I'm hungry

Bap generally means "food" but also means "rice."

Bap-joo-sae-yo: I want rice (polite)
Bap-jo: Give me rice (impolite)

Korean is kinda like Spanish; you don't need to always say "I" when you're saying something, it's implied. Like for spanish, "I am tired" would be "Estoy cansada" rather than "Yo estoy cansada." Same with Korean. Rather than "Na bap-joo-sae-yo" it can just be "Bap-joo-sae-yo."

Dudett, that's hilarious!! Why do you know how to say eraser?!? That's so random..... Pabo DOES mean stupid, btw....

The first things I learned in Korean were profanities and "inappropiate" words, like penis and b*tch and stuff. I don't think I'm allowed to post those here, though. If I am, then.. woo, I have a long list for you guys.

Aish is a typical thing that all Koreans say, I think. Even though they never learned it, I think it's like NATURAL or something. I haven't met a Korean that doesn't say "AISH" when they're frustrated. I don't even know what aish means. Weird..

Do you guys want to "learn" Korean by me answering questions, or by topics (like, what to say in a restaurant, what the names of people are in your family like brother and sister...)? Also, I know how to read Korean.. so if anyone wants to know how to read the Korean characters then I could help with that too. Does everyone's computers read Korean like mine automatically reads Chinese?

RANDOM WORD OF THE MOMENT:
Ban-gu: Fart

I think my NJ star program can read Korean.
Maybe you could type out the alphabet for us? ^_^

"Aish', that would probably be equivalent to what "aiya" is in Chinese, I think.

Sarang hae oh~~
that's all I know :]

HAHAHA. i was just abouta post up the ban go, fart thing.. hehe.. and also
yak sok - promise [i learned from h.o.t. song (^_~) "the promise of h.o.t." which wasn't even a promise!!! .\/.]
my chinese girlfriends and i r gonna take korean our first quarter at uw this fall!!! FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN :o) we can get some hot korean guys to tutor us.. heh.. heh..jp!
oppa - brother
hyung - boss or like "dah guh" in mandarin
i'm currently watching "glass shoes" IT'S SOOO GOOD.. so i'm picking up a lot more korean here and there.. i've learned some from "autumn story" "winter sonata"...etc! heh..

Jess
05-12-2003, 02:55 AM
Hahaha.. actually, I think 'hyung' means older brother, but with a lot of added respect. So you may affectionately call your older guy teacher 'hyung'.

if you want, you can go to http://strawberry-rock.org/~aheeyah and theres a section where you can learn the korean alphabet and learn to romanize. i tried and i got really confused T_T i've watched enough korean dramas to know common phrases.. like sorry, i know, yes, no, mom, dad, sister, brother, i love you, etc. haha

hmm yeah i say "aish" alot and my korean friend said that i sounded really korean.

don't koreans say "aigoo" alot? my friend uses it alot when she talks about homework. i think it means "oh no".

oh yeah, alot of people like to say "jooguleh" or "chooguleh" (wanna die?) cuz of my sassy girl. before, when only a few people knew what it meant, it was really fun to say. it's sorta annoying now.

Jess, are you sure you cant teach us at least a few offensive profanities in Korean?

I mean, it never hurts to know a few swearwords in different langauges just in case you know

I envy, envy, envy you - students in other countries, where you get to learn languages when you're in school.

Over here, you need to PAY to get into some private classes. I know they do offer Chinese, Arabic & japanese, at the university level but the extent of what you learn is nothing to be proud of.

So I learn the hard way - by watching the serials, the movies and trying to capture the subtitles for its translations.

My mistake here. Chinese is taught extensively in some government schools in malaysia but to be really serious , you got to know where to go to. For example, I studied in a Polytechnic and the Chinese courses were pathetic bcos the lecturers were not experts in the language, just mere Chinese educated lecturers who specialised in other Engineering fields.

Yay!! Are you Korean, Maggie nuna? Your profile information doesn't give me any hints... :-x

well if you want some profanity......

i'll leave jess to do the explainin hehehehehe it says that you're only 13?? then you'll hafta call me nuna/unnie hahaha

shibal
gochu
chamji
sekki
kesekki

I am 13!! Nuna!! Nuna sounds better than unnie. I had to call my older sister unnie. I don't call her that anymore ^___^

Wow, those are pretty good. Let's bleep some of them out so lepencil doesn't attack me :) (I'm jk)

Shibal: a REALLY bad curse word.. I don't know how to exactly put it into context, but just think of the top three worst curse words you know, and there you got it.
Gochu: penis (HOW DIAO IS THAT haha)
Chamji: Vagina
Sekki: B*tch
Kesekki: Again, this is hard to explain. It's basically b*tch (directly translated, "dog bitch"), but in a harsher context.

Here are some more vulgar/inappropiate words to add to your list.

Ddonggomong: Butthole
Chi chi (like that guy from DBZ! i hate that anime.): BOOBIES!!! (or, breast)
Jjut: Nipple

And then, like said above, bangu is fart and stupid/idiot is pabo (equivalant of Japanese "baka")

Does anyone have any requests on what to learn next in this thread? Or should I just go ahead w/ the restaurant thing like Maggie (NUNA) suggested?

hahaha jess you're so young so you don't understand... so close your eyes little dongseng~~

shibal = f*ck basically

ahh... jess lol! you know nuna is for boys right? you should be calling me unnie instead haha but whatever floats your boat i guess....and am i korean? kiki molla~~~~~ you'll have to guess! ^^

Jess
05-13-2003, 06:31 AM
Augh!! You're making fun of me!! ::sob::

..I didn't know that about the unnie and nuna thing. Woops. I should let you take over, Maggie unnie,

I think you ARE Korean... because I doubt any tutoring you got of Korean would teach you cuss words like that. Unless you have Korean friends.. the first thing foreign language friends want to teach you is the cuss words.

My friend tried to explain shibal to me, and she said that it was worse than f*ck. Hmpth.

haha Jess.. you never said nuna to another girl have you? ^^;; yeps unnie is what girls say.. nuna is what boys say. also, oppa is for girls and hyung is for boys.

ah.. well let's just say shibal is sorta like f*ck and definitely not something you just yell out, especially in front of anyone older than you lol.

For babyxv's...

I like to pick my nose and lick the boogers off my finger: Nah neun ko hoo bee goh kok ddak jee leul muh guh.

Actually, that means more of a, "I like to pick my nose and eat my boogers."

Kok ddak jee = boogers

Ah...nice thread. Hopefully you will post more korean words soon. So far, the things you have posted are general things which I already know, so if you could be generous enough, could you help us out more with trying to hold a proper conversation with other Koreans? I've got Korean friends myself, but it really does get annoying trying to ask them for new words and stuff every now and then.

What do you mean? what did he say to make you mad at him?
i didn't see anything wrong.

MTV Asia Award was airred in So. California recently, i basically anticipated jay's and jtl's perf and their acceptance speech for favorite artist (esp. when Tony knows english, i was excited to hear him speak), but i was upset, actually me and my sister were upset at what JTL said when they accepted their favorite korean music award because Tony was rude to only acknowledged the "fans in Korea." Basically neglecting the rest of the fans around the world that supported them. I am a total H.O.T fan, i bought all their cds, went to their concert when they came to L.A and supported them, but on the MTV Asia Award they only acknowledged the fans in Korea, so i was disappointed by that. :depresse: THey should have recognized all the fans, i mean.. they WERE in singapore and there are LOTS of HOT and JTL fans.. so that is why.

How do you say, "What the hell?" in Korean?

Jess
05-27-2003, 02:26 AM
What the hell? I don't believe there's an exact word by word way to say that, but most people (when in the situation) say:

Ee-guhn-moh-yah?!?!

in an extremely angry voice. That basically translates to "What is this?!?!" which could be interpreted as "What the hell?!?"

jAy is a s h y_ b o i

oing i don't think you can say "guess what" in korean. *shrugs*

maybe tony oppa only thanked fans in korea because that's how they got to mtv asia in the first place. they were voted "best artist from korea" so you know, thank the fans in korea for getting them there.

last summer i joined a tour to korea and the tour guide taught us some korean. she said "dok dok keh" was clever boy or sumthing (to praise a kid) and "yak keh" was weak(as in to make the fire weaker in steam boat). both of those mean bad things in cantonese (the whole tour were all hk people). "dok dok keh" dok means point/press and keh is a bad word for sh*t and "yak keh" is a bad word, means eat sh*t. you can guess how much we laughed when she taught us these words.

This looks like a fun thread. I'm actually Chinese, but I dated a Korean girl for 2 years and have numerous Korean friends. Someone correct my poor spelling, but this might help those of you in college:

Shibal Sekki ya - F****** B*** (get ready to throw down after you say this to a person, or if you hear it from someone)

Bali- Hurry

Kaja- Let's go

Bali Kaja (for the the asian laggers out there)

Dambeh- Cigarette

Dambeh Pija- Let's go smoke

Dambeh Iso?- Do you have a cigarette? (Iso=there)

Dambeh Op Soh- I don't have a cigarette (Op Soh=not here)

Bul Golgi- The thin marinated meat you can order at a restaurant

Kalbi- Beef Short Ribs (yummy, I love making this stuff)

Dok Bok Gi- The chewy ricecakes

Tae Ji Golgi- marinated pork (Tae Ji=pig)

Kimchee Ji Geh- Kimchee soup

More to come later!

learning swear words are fun..^__^

after watching the Movie my Tutor Friend, i learned some.. man they say it like it's so normal. scary!

"Shibaaaaaaalll nom, kesheki ya" ! ( F*** U, SOB!)

" Mee Chin Nyun!! " ( B****)

can i ask a question, what's the difference between Abuji and Abunim??

right now i'm watching Attic Cat and here are words they always use..

Haraboji - Grandpa
Haramoni- Grandma
Muk Go - eat!
gokjong ha ji ma - don't worry
chakamanyo - wait a sec
dorawa - come back
naga - get out
to' o ke - ill be back
i ro na - lets go
o di ga - where u going?

ahh the romanization is all wrong, i'm just writing based on what i hear. correct me if i'm wrong... :?

ah can't remember them all.

Hajima - Stop it
Damyon - ...Not too sure about that one... I don't think that's a word...o_O Are you thinking of "da eum"? That means next. Or maybe "da eum nyun"? That means next year... Or could you possibly be thinking of "geu ruh tah myun"? That means if you're going to do that/because.

Yeah, I'm still not too sure about that second one...

last summer i joined a tour to korea and the tour guide taught us some korean. she said "dok dok keh" was clever boy or sumthing (to praise a kid) and "yak keh" was weak(as in to make the fire weaker in steam boat). both of those mean bad things in cantonese (the whole tour were all hk people). "dok dok keh" dok means point/press and keh is a bad word for sh*t and "yak keh" is a bad word, means eat sh*t. you can guess how much we laughed when she taught us these words.

 WAHAHAHAHAHHAAHHAAHAHAAHHAHAZ!!!!!!!!!!! thats so funni!!! ahahaahahhaz! bout to 'shee' my pants! wahahahahaz!

Gam-sah hap-nee-da (thanks) for the translations... Could be useful if i ever go to korea next time.... :)

I noticed that its much harder to say something in korean...
For example:

Ahn-nyung ha-seh-yo... Thats like 5 words... It's much easier in english... Just 1 word - hello...

Anyway thanks for all the korean-english translations.. :)

Jo
10-24-2003, 11:55 PM
that may just be the nation's formalities

isn't Ahn-nyung the informal way of saying hello? and ahn-nyung ha-seh-yo is the formal way

if you think about it...hello and ahnnyung both have two syllable...its like the difference between hello and greetings my friend, or how do you do.

shouling
10-25-2003, 01:20 AM
o.k. we all know that, sarang hae = i love you
but what does one say in return?
in English we'd say i love you too.
what is that in Korean?

Sporks
10-25-2003, 04:08 AM
Jo: yes, the ahn nyung is the informal way of saying it. It's like saying it to your friends, and ahn nyung hah se yo is for parents, or teachers, people like that.

Shouling: I'm not sure how to say "I love you too." I never thought about that o_O I'll ask my friend about it and then I'll edit this post when I get home (I'm at my dad's restaurant right now, but I'll be home in less than an hour).

[edit] My Korean expert friend said that you could say "nah doo nuh sa rang hae." That's a literal translation of "I love you too." I hope that helps

I'm not really sure if you'd want an ACTUAL Korean dictionary, because if you can't read Korean, there's not really a point to it. But if that IS what you want, here's a site for a English to Korean dictionary (there's also Korean to English).

http://www.sigmainstitute.com/koreanonline/dictionary.shtml

I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for, but they also have clips of native speakers of Korean saying phrases, if you want to learn how to pronounce the words properly. This site seems to be really great for learning all things about the language and culture of Korea. The only thing I don't like is how they romanized Korean, but that's probably just me.

I hope that helps, Jenen

Been reading the entire thread and I thought this was great and all. Learnt some new phrases. Had learnt some words and somewhat understand what my friends are talking about. *phew. Korean still seems like greek to me. Hmm, but I guess I shall take some time and learn slowly =] Anyway I was wondering if anyone could teach on how to write Korean? Like how do we fit the characters together? This is rather hard I guess. I always seem to fit them in the wrong places. Eh, I guess i'm rather lousy at time.lol

Yeah, the words tend to be overly long o_o I guess you get used to it though.

And for the question about jalka... OHH I GET IT! At first, I had no clue what you were talking about, but now I think you're talking about "jahl gah" which is literally saying, "Leave well." I guess it's kinda like saying, "Take care of yourself."

Yuh gi oh (haha that reminds me of Yu Gi Oh!) kind of means, "right here." You could use that to say, "look here" because it would draw the person's attention to whatever you're talking about.

SM TOWN
it's a lot of artists under this music company SM Entertainment. H.O.T , SES, Shinhwa , used to be in it..
right now, who's left is
Kangta, Moon hee Jun, Shoo( SES) , Blackbeat, MILK, DANA , BoA , Fly to the Sky .. anymore? Isak & Jiyeon ..

the MV u saw was probably Summer Vacation rite?
then Shinhwa was still in it.. ^_^

u can prolly find out more stuff at the website,

u can view it in english too.

SMTOWN is the entertainment that H.O.T, S.E.S, shinhwa, ftts, boa, etc. is under...if you go back far enough in their first album boa wasn't in it yet...they sing for their christmas albums i think they have like 4 so far or there's gonna be four and so far they have only two summer albums....it's kinda sad now cuz in their mv for the latest winter song...there's a lack of people...it looks so empty is what i mean compared to all their other mvs cuz shinhwa is gone as well as h.o.t, s.e.s, blackbeat isn't in there xept for one person i think...but yeah they're all gone....

cmy_185, I'll try my best! I don't have a lot of time at the moment (I'm supposed to be doing homework ), but I'll watch it over one or two times and try. But my Korean is really bad, so you might not get every single word.

MC: Here is Kwon Sang Woo!
KSW: Hello.
MC: You just sang a song called "I Want to See You" (Boh Goh Ship Dah). People who actually sing sang this song. I always thought that you couldn't sing because you were an actor... But you sing very well!
KSW: Today when I sang, I think this was the first time that I had a dry mouth.
MC: Yes, maybe a little. Well, since you're not a singer, but an actor, I think that if you sing like this, it's very good.
KSW: Thank you.
MC: [something something] Do you like people saying that you have a nice body or a nice face?
KSW: Although I like both, I’m not very handsome (I think), and I think that my body is..pathetic! *laughs* Sorry!
MC: You're right, you're right. I saw you on TV one day, and your body was shown, and it seems like [something something]. Do you exercise regularly?
KSW: Lately, since I’ve been filming movies and dramas, I don’t have time to do things. I haven’t been very fit. When everything is done, I will start exercising again.
MC: You should do push ups, and things like that.
KSW: Yes.
MC: My hand keeps wandering away from the mic without my knowing! *touches KSW creepily* Would you like to cut my hand and take it? To my knowledge, you came out in [some drama]. Last year you came out in [some drama]. I wonder what kind of student you were? I just was in a band, instead of studying. I used to like [some artist] and tried to be like him.
KSW: when I was young there was New Kids on the Block.
MC: *laughs* Since New Kids on the Block had 5 members, all of your friends could have been one of the members.

Oh wow. The video kept pausing without me doing anything, and it did it every half a second so I couldn't hear it  So I listened to it like 6 times, haha. And I STILL didn't understand it all. Egh, I need to brush up on my Korean more often. Ahn-nyung everyone!! Thanks so much for the help in Korean. I'm currently trying to learn some words here and there with the help of this thread, Korean friends and websites. It's so hard though... I dunno where to start. The Alphabet sounds like a good idea though.

Just some random words I know:

-Gasoo(singer)
-Ahn-nyung(hello in an informal way)
-Nah neun mi chuh! (I'm crazy!)

err...my mind just went blank  lol sorry.

Funny story though. Ahn-nyung sounds like the english word "Onion" so everytime me and my korean friend see each other we go "onion!"

Thanks again for the help!~
