*i think this news is abit old....but i thought i'll just post it anyway for anyone who has missed out*
Stress and awards turn on Jay Chou. But not as much as cutting an album with Jet Li would
You may may envy 23-year-old Jay Chou for his multiple talents as a singer, songwriter and album producer.
They won him a whopping five Singapore Hit Awards, including Asia Pacific Most Outstanding Male Artiste on Sunday night.
And you may wonder how he manages to up the ante on his own album sales, with his second album, Fantasy, selling 160,000 copies here (Singapore) and his thrid, The Eight Dimensions, selling 15,000 copies in the first two days of its July launch.
Sitting fresh-faced with radio compere Tan Li Yi at a press conference yesterday, with his haul of five gleaming crystal awards on the table, you'd probably think: Some guys have all the luck.
But get this: Jay Chou himself is not spared the hero-worshipping bug.
And his hero: Gonfu star Jet Li.
"Jet Li fought his way into Hollywood and is a Chinese who brings honor to the rest of us," said Jay, who has acted out his fantasies of being a ninja and nunchaku exponent in his music videos.
"So I hope I can do the same for the Chinese community in the music arena, hopefully in 10 years' time"
In the meantime, the Taiwanese star wants to produce a Jet Li album if he gets the chance.
"I wish most to help him produce a rap album and he can show off his gongfu in the videos. I will probably do an album such as Long Quan (Dragon Fist, the title of one of his new songs) for him...or Long Xia (Lobster)," he added cheekily.
Then, poking fun at his own trademark slurred diction, Jay said: "I have never heard him sing before, but I am sure his diction is very clear."
His diction is so slurred in his lightning-paced rap that the meaning os the lyrics escapes him.
"Sometimes" I don't even understand what I am singing about," he admitted.
But a fast-paced, high-pressure environment is just what turns on his creative juices.
"Stress is like a spring board. You can jump higher with the stress. I hope I will be stressed all the time, so I can do a good job with my music," Jay said.
"If life is too comfortable, I might not be able to write good music."
But there was a hint of regret about his song, "End Of The World", winning Y.E.S 93.3 RM Most Popular Song of the Year award.
He had hoped the ward would go to Nunchaku, also from his Fantasy album.
"Everyone looks at music differently. So although there are some things I hoped to get but didn't, it's a consolation when I get other unexpected things. I am happy so long as I can win an award," he said.
When asked, Jay named Fantasy as his "classic album" and The Eight Dimensions as his most mature work to date.
"But no matter what, they are all my children. No matter how ugly they are, I love them," he said.
Jay will begin rehersals for a Taiwan concert on Sept 28. Singapore fans will see him again in January for a concert or autograph session at least.
A new album is expected next year.
