I thot of starting this thread so that people who dunno Thai Lang can learn thai lang here...Let me start the ball rolling...

jtayk

1) Thank you
Korb Khun
ขอบคุณ
2) Good morning
Sawaddee Torn Chow
สวัสดีตอนเช้า
3) I love you
Chan Rak Khun
ฉันรักคุณ
But for Sawaddee, It is as common as hi, it can b said anytime a day. Sawaddee ja :wave:
pukpods
09-16-2004, 02:15 PM
you can say only "Sa-wad-dee" for all day. It's mean good morning, good afternoon, good evening and can use like "hi" or "hello" but after this word "Sawaddee", you use "ka" if you are female and "krub" if you are male. :wacko:
Ex: puk say "Sa-wad-dee-ka" to jay then jay reply "Sa-wad-dee-krub" to puk :brows:
pamujung

Hope to see more of people who are interested in our Thai Language.
I just noticed this, the pronounciation in english of "Good morning"
2) Good morning
Sawaddee Torn Chow
สวัสดีตอนเช้า hehe it doesn't pronounce like that in Chinese

is the "t" in Thai pronounced as "d"...like for Samed/Samet...which is which? It's not accurate in every word :hmm:
You can use "samed" and "samet" , these are same pronounced with same meaning :happy:
But "dee" = good :thumbsup: / "tee" = hit :chair:, these are difference sound and meaning :glug:

moonsilk I didn't know before that you're so interested in Thailand :D well,it's kinda impressive :happy: nice to know you ka :wave:
masterCP umm..'t' sound pronounces the same as 'd' sound when it functions as final sound..BUT when it functions as intial sound it's different..:wacko:
for example look at pukpods post on previous page..lol
Today's Thai word>> narak = cute,pretty :rolleyes:

Sawaddee-ka,Im Georgina...

Nice to meet you...
Do come to Singapore when u r free...
In Thai version it would be
" Sawaddee-ka, shun sheu Georgina
shun ma jak Singapore
khun sheu a-rai ka?
yin dee tee dai ru juk ka
ta wang ma Singapore si ka" :sweat:
masterCP here's your request
how much is this? = nee (raka) tao rai ka?
no discount? = mai lod noi reu ka?
what is your last price? = raka derm tao rai ka?
hope that would help u when u do shopping in Thaiand :happy:
pamujung
09-19-2004, 03:25 PM
hmm.. May did translate well, can I add more for Pronounciation and wording :D
Sawaddee-ka, shun sheu Georgina
the word sheu will be hard to pronounce and you will note sure how to pronounce it correctly, so compare with the PinYin sheu = shi
To separate meaning it means "Name"
what is your last price? = raka derm tao rai ka?
the last price !? this should be the price after discount or the price before discount :? In what May translated means the price before discount.
pukpods
09-19-2004, 06:34 PM
Oh! we're already have 2 students, now :excited: We will change you to be thai people :whip:
MayJung, pam, masterCP, I think "what is your last price?" should be "hai dai tao rai ka" in thai :hmm:

09-20-2004, 05:38 PM
i found a good website teaching thai alphabets and vowels pronouciation here (http://www.seasite.niu.edu/Thai/)
u can start from clicking on left door and then click alphabet and tones.
i think u should start from right pronouciatiuon of each alphabet and then come and ask us here for frequently used words and sentenses. otherwise u can't get the pronouciation right. thai language doesn't really have english pinyin. that is what we, thais, try to use english to be pinyin. it's not standardized like chinese pinyin. it can make u easily confused. hope it helps ka.

09-20-2004, 06:59 PM
Can i ask how to pronounce:
Rian
direk=direct?
Kheu
Puen
haha Okay let me try.. compare with pinyin again
rian = lian >> means Study
a-direk (it's one word) = a di lake >> means hobby
; note that di, pronouce as english word digit
kheu = ki >> means is/am/are
; ki pronouce as pinyin of shi, just change sh to k
puen = paen >> means friend
; try saying pa and en quickly :sweat:

Great student Moonsilk or should I called you Gina??
Congratulations you have passed the first test. A for this.
You practise this line with your mates, how cute. Boonsak must be so proud to know that a Spore girl tries to speak Thai to communicate with him.
Now what else do you need to learn? Have you learnt a common How r u?
How r u? = Khun sabai dee mai?
I am fine. = Chan sabai dee.
Do u like Singapore? = Khun Chorb Singapore mai?
I like Singapore = Chan chorb Sinagore/ Prated Thai ( Prated Thai = Thailand ) ( Prated = country )
But if you wanna ask someone about what they like you can use this form of question, and leave Sinapore out and put something else to replace. The same way for the answer.

Then slowly move on to getting to know more of each other and then move on to hotel bit. Don't jump on to conclusion, fei. We better take things slow and it will be good. hm... do i speak chinese... i'd say.. i had 2 years of chinese in high school but that was some 3 years ago... so.. hard to say.. how about.. i kinda understand a little bit of cantonese and mandarin... mandarin purely from listening to chinese music but cantonese mostly from my friends though.
i found out that i learn more chinese in the past year just by solely listening to jay chou and sing along and looking up the translation than those 2 years spending with Mr. Wang in high school... hahah.. surprising... :bleh: just guess that once u are into something, that something comes pretty easily...
hi, how do u say "I will miss you" in thai ?
curious abt it ^^''

sawasdee kha! Its tough! :laughing: especially when the sentences come in.. Think i am not good in this. But Hey! i love bangkok too much.
Ok i learnt the numbers 1-10 already.
But, when a thing is selling at say, 59 baht, its not ha (5) kao (9) right? so how to say the common bigger numbers?
When i ask the seller how much? then they willl say something like yip seet which is 20 or 10? pardon me, i am a thai language nuts. Lol.
Maybe thai teachers can teach this new student how to say bigger number? will come in useful when i go shopping!!!!
39=?
49=?
59=?
or when it doesnt end with nine, etc: 50? 80? Korb Khun. :bow:

59=? >> 59 = HA-SIB-GAO
or when it doesnt end with nine, etc: 50? 80? >> HA-SIB and PAD-SIB
To count the number 1 -10 is
1 - NEUNG
2 - SONG
3- SAM
4 - SEE
5 - HA
6 - HOK
7 - JED
8 - PAD
9 - GAO

Woah!
Im really glad to see so many people interested in the thai language like me!
I can join in the teaching now!!
Haha!
Esther: I shall quote u more!
I think 199 is kinda common in shopping malls ya?
199 is pronounced as loi gao gao.And if you know chinese,the han yu pin yin should be loi3 gao4 gao4. Get it?
And 100 is neng3 roi2,200 is song3 roi2 etc...
More to add on...
Thank you = Khob khun kha
And usually when you say khob khun kha,the other person will say
Dont mention it/It's ok = Mai pen rai kha
Thais are very polite!
Notice that "I" for girls and guys are different.
Chan/Dichan = I (Said by Girls), Phom = I (Said by Guys) and lastly,
Nuu = I (Said by little kids)
I miss you = Chan/Phom kit teung khun
Chan/Phom=I, Kit teung=Miss, Khun=You
I love you = Chan/Phom rak khun
Rak=Love
I like you = Chan/Phom chorp khun
Chorp=Like
Hehe!

Oh, ok thanks! Think i sort of got the numbers! :bounce:
To recap: 35: sam sib ha right?
Just that the number 1 is different cos from moonsilk's example, 199 is not neung gao gao but loi gao gao right?
Hundred is an addition of *-roi....
Chan rak khun! :love:
pamujung
12-29-2005, 02:30 PM
ahh... Gina :kisschee:
To recap: 35: sam sib ha right? Right !
Let's see
1 = NEUNG
10 = SIB
100 = (NEUNG-)ROI
1000 = NEUNG-PUN
199 = (formal) NEUNG-ROI-GAO-SIB-GAO / (informal) ROI-GAO-GAO

ig. du-wai --> DUAY
Ellen Khun cuup chan?! = You kiss me ?! This thread is more than welcome you to learn Thai ^^
moonsilk
12-30-2005, 04:14 AM
Pam!
I know its duay through written thai script.
I typed it as du-wai for the pronounciation sake.
If I type it as duay,many non-thais will see it as dwei I supposed~
Its ok,I think it will be fine when I talk to you real life!
Hehe!
Hi ellen!
Khun cuup chan means You kiss me!Hahaha!!!
We shall learn thai together!
More phrases to add on:
Wan jaan = Monday
Wan ang khaan = Tuesday
Wan phut = Wednesday
Wan pharue hat = Thursday
Wan suk = Friday
Wan sao = Saturday
Wan aa thit = Sunday
If anyone is not clear about pronounciation,clarify it here!

if you want to ask someone name, you have to say: "Khun chi arai kha?"
