What is an avatar?
The little image that shows up under your name

How do I add one?
1. You must be in the Registered Users+ (http://www.jay-chou.net/forums/faq.php?faq=jcnet_faq_item#faq_jcnet_faq_item13) group
2. Click on the 'User CP' link above to access your preferences
3. Click on 'Edit Avatar' under Settings & Options of your control panel

'Use Custom Avatar' should be selected already.

There are 2 options for you:
-link directly to that picture from another site* (just enter the URL in the space provided)
-upload a picture from your computer to use (to be stored on jay-chou.net server) it has to be within 150x150 in dimensions and 12kb for file size for Registered Users+ and 20kb for file size for other Group members

3. After you pick which option you want and entered the necessary information, just click 'Save Changes' and you're all done.

*You can upload your avatar to sites that allow hot-linking. For example, www.photobucket.com OR www.webpost.net

photoshop does this easy

copy the picture you want and open a new file in photoshop, the dimension (pixel x pixel) should already match your picture, just make sure its RGB

then save it AS a Jpeg, it should have a file size selection, i usually put the quality to 10, but some pictures may require up to 7 to go under 12kb

or if you really don't want to compress it, and its not too incredibly large, you can host up the image at another website and direct image link it to this forum using the avatar options

The version of Paint which comes with Windows Me/2000/XP would suffice.

When you want to save a file, select JPEG from the "Save as Type" list (or something) to save it as a JPG file.

If you, like me, are still using Windows 98, you might wish to download IrfanView (http://www.irfanview.com), one of the best free software you can find anywhere. The program is extremely easy to use, and you can use it to convert files from one type to another effortlessly.

hey tofu, i'm not familiar with the IrfranView software. it looks really nifty judging by the website. anyway, if you don't wanna reduce the picture to 12kb for your avatar, you can always just upload the avatar to another site such as www.webpost.net or www.photobucket.com by creating an account. that way, you don't have to restrict your pic to 12kb because you're not uploading it directly to this site.

You can only use IrfanView for optimizing JPG files, and nothing else.

When you are being prompted for a filename to save to, select JPG for the file type and then access the saving options (sorry, I can't exactly remember all those because I don't have IrfanView on this computer).

You will see a slider bar for the quality. From experience, a quality of about 90% should make a typical 150 by 150 pixel image possess a filesize in the region of 10KB or so. Do a bit of trial and error to vary the quality such that you meet the 12KB limitation.

Alternatively, you could try the XAT.com Image Optimizer.

you need to give more info for anyone to properly help you out here.

just give a list of some of your fave singers, actors/actresses, food, things... anything you would want in an avtar. oh.. and dont laugh at the food thing... one of us had a baked potato for an avatar once~! LOL~!

hm....i've been having some problems uploading an avatar recently....
the ones that i used to use, are now somehow "too big"....???

is there a new limit on the size of the avatar???
i change the dimensions in photoshop, and its supposed to be under 20kb, but somehow i still get the error message....
also, i can no longer do 150 by 150 ( i used to be able to before)
now i keep it down to 130 by 130, and at low res (level 3 or 4 in photoshop)

u tried uploading an avatar..
it is 150 x 150..it works great
maybe something is wrong with your size..
it must be smaller than 19.5kb instead of 20kb

the first post indicated the dimension+file size limit, did you make sure that they're all within the range??

i tried saving on paint as a jpeg but it doesn;t save. it says some error. :worry:

Why don't you READ the error? I know the system doesn't just tell you "no I don't accept your crappy avatar. goodbye." ..it gives a reason why it's not accepting it. Either dimensions are too big, or file size is too big. Read the error message, fix your avatar accordingly, simple as that!

you can also try saving them as .gif files. since avatars are smaller in size, effects lost aren't as obvious. i save my all avatars in .gif files... if you're using photoshop, save it as CompGIF(GIF) instead of jpeg so you can save the trouble of resizing the images.

i don't think princessKitty was referring to being unable to upload the avatar to the site, instead was having a problem saving it..
