ooo..i have a question. when i was watching faye's love from a lie, the only thing i picked up was what they kept repeating. she would call the guy 'darling' and he would say darling 'juh nie' meaning, i'm not your darling? sorry, must've spelled it wrong. is that a way to negate something? like 'ne pas' en francais?
linny
04-30-2003, 03:37 AM
Oiya! I like watching subtitled Japanese shows. I've picked up a few minor words that way... Also picked up random words from listening to songs, watching anime, even reading manga. Though, it's nothing really useful.
My tiny list of Japnaese vocab:
Gomen ne = Sorry?
yakusoku = promise
dakishimete = to hold
hikari = light
sora = sky
domo arigatou = thank you
baka = idiot
sou desu ka? = is that so?
daijoubu = it's fine
demo... = but...
ano = well...
Um... I'm not 100% if that's correct, so if anyone notices my list is wrong, feel free to correct.
(Actually, I want to relearn Mandarin more than learn Japanese at the moment)

argh i really wanted to take japanese but... yo hablo español T_T
Yo hablo espanol tambien! Pero, no hablo mucho. >.> No me gusta la clase de espanol... Es muy aburrido. -.-
Translation (I think): I speak Spanish too! But I can't talk a lot. I don't like the Spanish class... It's really boring.
Arg. Whatever. I'd still rather learn Japaense. ^^ Wish my school had Japanese or Mandarin available as a language class...

haha this is what i know that hasn't been listed.
aishiteru = i love you
sayonara = goodbye
nan de (i think!..picked it up from watching takky) = why
... and that's it
oh, you add 'gonzaimass' when you're trying to be polite, right? arigatou gonzai mass! ^^;
my favourite phrase is daijorbu! :D or however you spell it
Chun Li
04-30-2003, 08:53 AM
you add "gozaimasu" and the end when you are trying to be polite, or when you are speaking (keigo). You also have to use it when you speak with people who are higher in the hierarchy than you.
hisashi
04-30-2003, 08:58 AM
ah..what's the diff btwn nan de and doushite?
Chun Li
04-30-2003, 09:04 AM
doushite is more polite.
hisashi
04-30-2003, 09:06 AM
hm...Japanese is a whole bunch of polite pple!
then is sayonara polite to use? is it often used?
Chun Li
04-30-2003, 09:16 AM
Sayonara is used at anytime. It can be a little too formal when used with friends though. Sayonara also implies that you might not see them again for awhile, so between good friends, everyone just says, "Jyanna!"

benkyou shimasu = study
.......shimasu = do something
kekkonshimasu = menikah
doukushin = not yet married people
.....san = mr..../mrs..../ms...(jap ppl always add SAN when he call others ppl. politely.) but for kid....we can add chan. n for boy...jap ppl usually add KUN.

which means stupid idiot.
yukiko------ no double posting. edit your old posts and ADD to it instead of posting twice in a row.
yeah it is hard to teach japanese online.
so i think the best we can do is teach phrases. teaching vocab is pointless since they only know one word and they don't know how to put it into a sentence anyway.

i dunno whether this has been explained b4..
but pronounciation is quite important.
a - pronounced like the 'a' in car
e - sounds like the 'e' in egg
i - idiot, igloo etc.
o - more, door
u - put etc.
bla bla, u get wat i mean....[hopefully]
i dunno if that would help, coz a lot of ppl have diff. accents..:?

We SHOULD start a korean language thread. I'm planning to learn Korean anyway.
Here's my Japanese word for everyone:
Shine. = Die.
(shee - ne)
jAy is a s h y_ b o i

i plan to learn korean too.
hopefully this summer hehe.
i don't think a korean thread will be too successful because i don't think many people know how to speak korean. we'll just end up asking each other questions.

yup! dat's right! the japanese a-i-u-e-o pronounciations r exactly the same with our (indonesian) pronounciations.. so mayb it's a lil bit easier for us to learn jap oh well at least to pronounce it! :)

Sugoi(fantastic) learning Japanese in the forums, finally i have a chance to put my bad Jap skills to use. I've been learning it at school...but the class is very disrespectful so not much gets done, oh well. My Jap input for the day:
Tabemasu-to eat
nemasu-to sleep

i don't think cystaltears was actually stating that she herself is a pretty girl (although i think she is). in fact, i've never heard her say anything even close to that about herself before, only about other people.
but then again, who here can honestly say that they don't think of themselves as pretty? :D just because one doesn't say it, if one thinks it, won't it equal up as the same thing?

Er, just saying this before a moderator gets to it, but I advise taking this post down, stephie. We want to keep these forums clean and without any mean threats.
I understand that you want to protect your friends, but saying "Shut ur lil biatchy trap" is inappropriate and I don't think that this forum should be about these type of posts.

My favorite japanese word: dakishimeta
Seems like singers use this word a lot in songs... I like listening to people say "Daijoubu" (It's fine?). It's such an interesting word... Oh! How about some grammar lessons to go with the japanese vocab?
Like... "Watashi wa" (I am) can be used for both guys and girl, but "Atashi wa" (same meaning) is used by girls.
Is that correct? I wouldn't know since I haven't learned Japanese... Picking up words through watching subtitled dramas, reading translations of manga, and watching anime is helpful though.

i like to say "doitashimashite" cuz it sounds like "don't touch your moustache". it means "you're welcome".
in my japanese class i say these two alot:
"otearai ni itte mo ii desuka"
may i go to the bathroom?
"watashi wa ichiban sukina kashu wa jay chou desu"
my favorite singer is jay chou.
i also use "eeto". it's like "ano". they're both things japanese say when they're thinking or not sure. like the english "umm" "uhh" "hmm" ...

Picking up words through watching subtitled dramas, reading translations of manga, and watching anime is helpful though.
yup u rite..1 more for ur vocab...boku wa. its same like watashi wa. but only boys can use it.
n for june=====doko desu ka? not toko desu ka? just wanna correct u..its ok???? :p

crystaltears--ahh now that i know you're friend is the one that wants to learn... i guess that is *ok* hehe :P but i think it would actually be an "ehh" idea because since Japanese people are never straightforward, going up to a Japanese person and saying that would come off as pretty scary. Unless they've been living outside of Japan for a while and are used to it.... but I think most people's reaction would be like "whoa!"
anyway, this is what your friend could say...
kimi wa kakkoi da yo (you're really hot!) said to someone you know well.
anata wa kakkoi desu ne (same meaning but more polite...should use this if you're just going up to strangers lol)
hmmm... my favorite Japanese word?
I have a few...
I like the word for butterfly...cockroach/cockroach trap just because I find them funny to say haha.
The word I just like is darling. ^^
My fave phrase is "I'm hungry" haha

Nihongo wa hanase-masen = I can't speak Japanese.
sou ka??? hahaha. sorry. my jap still bad.
btw...i can't speak japanese====nihongo ga hanashimasen. not hanase masen lor.
babygirl is correct...it's hanasemasen (cannot speak)
'Hanasu" (dictionary-form) is a group 1 verb, when changed to conditional-form (Hanaseba) with a "ru" or "masu" combined(less "ba"), it becomes hanaseru (potential-form) which means can speak.
So cannot speak will be "hanasemasen" or "hanasenai"

i reackon japanese is a very cool language..i heard that it's easy to learn because you don't have to conjugate verbs and there isn't such things as past or present tense (not sure whether that's correct though)
the one and only phrase i know in japanese is:
oh kimo jii - oh so comfortable
and i think everyone knows these ones
hai - yes
iie - no
kare - he
kanojo - she
naze nara - because
endoresu - endless
anata - you
( i also heard that anata isn't used in sentences very often, it's mostly used in the form when you greet your husband or wife and it means darling, like in david tao's song 'my anata')
if anything that i've just said is incorrect, feel free to correct me

sakana - fish
akai - red
When u say .. sakana wa akai desu .. it means "The fish is red"
desu is like "is" but it is placed in the end of the sentence.
wa is used after the subject of the sentence.
I think its better to go through the basics in contructing sentences .. to be abl to comprehend complicated and long sentences ..

Oiya! I like watching subtitled Japanese shows. I've picked up a few minor words that way... Also picked up random words from listening to songs, watching anime, even reading manga. Though, it's nothing really useful.
My tiny list of Japnaese vocab:
Gomen ne = Sorry?
yakusoku = promise
dakishimete = to hold
hikari = light
sora = sky
domo arigatou = thank you
baka = idiot
sou desu ka? = is that so?
daijoubu = it's fine
demo... = but...
ano = well...
Um... I'm not 100% if that's correct, so if anyone notices my list is wrong, feel free to correct.
(Actually, I want to relearn Mandarin more than learn Japanese at the moment)
gomen ne = sorry?
i thought sumimasen = sorry :? :happy:

Ok i will teach about telling the time.
Hour
1:00 - i-chi-ji
2:00 - ni-ji
3:00 - san-ji
4:00 - yo-ji
5:00 - go-ji
6:00 - ro-ku-ji
7:00 - shi-chi-ji
8:00 - ha-chi-ji
9:00 - ku-ji
10:00 - juu-ji
11:00 - juu-i-chi-ji
12:00 - juu-ni-ji
Minutes
1 - i-ppun
2 - ni-hun
3 - san-pun
4 - yon-pun
5 - go-hun
6 - ro-ppun
7 - nana-hun
8 - ha-chi-hun/ha-ppun
9 - kyuu-hun
10 - ji-ppun
11 - juu-i-ppun
12 - juu-ni-hun
13 - juu-san-hun
14 - juu-yon-pun
15 - juu-go-hun
16 - juu-ro-ppun
17 - juu-nana-hun
18 - juu-ha-chi-hun
19 - juu-kyuu-hun
20 - ni-ji-ppun
30 - san-ji-ppun
35 - san-juu-go-hun
40 - yon-ji-ppun
45 - yon-juu-go-hun
50 - go-ji-ppun
55 - go-juu-go-hun
60 - ro-ku-ji-ppun
From the 21st min to the 59th min, the pattern will be the same from the 11th min to 19 min....just add "ni" in front for 21st to 29th min, "san" for 31st to 39 min, "yon" for 41st to 49th min and "go" for 51st to 59th min
And i have break the word into parts so that it's easier to pronounce while it's actually 1 whole word...
Things to take note
Those with pp, tt, ss or kk in the word are double consonants when you need to pause before it...
For example: ro-ku-ji(pause a while)-ppun
Those with aa, ii, uu, ee, ei, ou, oo are long vowels, so you must drag the the word...
For example: go-juu(drag)-go-hun
To tell time, just combine the hour and the minute together....
For example: 12:55 (juu-ni-ji + go-juu-go-hun)
If there is any mistake, feel free to correct me~ :wink2:

Well, i got my dictionaries with me...
From "Kondansha's furigana Japanese dictionary", やくそく or 約束 in kanji has 2 meanings.
1) Promise
e.g. 北野さんはいつもやくそくを守ります。
e.g. Kitano san wa itsumo yakusoku o mamori masu.
e.g. Mr. Kitano always keeps his promises.
2) Appointment, engagement, promise to meet
e.g. 3時のやくそくだったが、由美は来なかった。
e.g. 3ji no yakusoku datta ga, Yumi wa konakatta.
e.g. It was a 3 'o clock date/appointment, but Yumi didn't come.
Also, やくそく する
yakusoku suru will mean
1) To make a promise
2) To make an appointment
From "Bonjinsha Oxford : Basic Japanese English dictionary":-
やくそく
yakusoku
means the following:- promise, agreement, appointment, engagement, date.
In addition,
Keeping a promise
やくそく を 守る
yakusoku o mamoru
Breaking a promise
やくそく を 破る
yakusoku o yaburu

LESSON IHAJIMEMASHITE (introducing)
How to introduce ourself in Japanese (Japan rules).
• Ohayou gozaimasu/konnichiwa----good morning, good day(greeting)
• Hajimemashite----basicly da meanin’ is the 1st time—but in dis case, it more mean as let me introduce my self
• (ur name) desu. Eg. Won Bin desu. U cannot add san/chan/kun in ur own name. its use to called others. But the formal model for san is SAMA. Now, Japanese dun’t use it oftenly. They use SAMA when writing Letter or calling someone who honourable like samurai.
• U may add where u came from, but it isn’t the important point.
(ur country) kara kimashita. Eg—Kankoku kara kimashita.
Kankoku = korea
Kara = from
Kimashita = came(past); the present is kimasu.
So, the example’s meaning is = came from korea
Japanese usually dun add watashi (me/I) when speaking. So it a lil bit hard to find subject in Japanese sentences. ^^
• N to complete it u must add Douzo Yoroshiku (u can add Onegaishimasu if u want to). === Douzo Yoroshiku Onegaishimasu.
Douzo Yoroshiku = Nice to meet u/glad to meet u(sumthin’ like dat)
Onegaishimasu = bother you.
It sound a lil weird, but dats how they do. Maybe it means ---- Nice to meet u. ur help please/sorry, maybe in future I’ll bother u, so hope u can help me. I can’t explain it clearly. Sorry (any1 can help us?? ^^) maybe in Mandarin u can say “ma fan ni ya”.
Ohayou Gozaimasu
Hajimemashite
Won bin desu
Kankoku kara kimashita
Douzo Yoroshiku Onegaishimasu
If u want, u can add what ur occupation after u tell them where u came from. Eg: Gakusei desu (it spelled= gaksei des)
If u want to introduce some1 to others u can say = kochira wa (other’s name) desu. Eg: kochira wa Jay desu.
N if u wanna know some1 u don’t know b4, u can say=
Shitsureishimasu, O namae wa? = excuse me, ur name plz

We use hiragana for the original Japanese words. Katakana is usually used for words of foreign origin (other than Chinese). We can use kanji for the original Japanese words too, this will depend on the kanji (if there is any) to replace the hiragana.
Do bear in mind that while kanji is derived from Chinese characters, some of the writings are different in terms of strokes and the actual meaning in Chinese.
e.g in difference in terms of stroke
Writing in Chinese = 海
Writing in kanji = 海
I think you might not see the difference here, but basically Chinese writing has 2 strokes in the 母 part while kanji writing is a straight line across vertically.
http://www.geocities.com/kuovonne/custom_pillows.html <=== see the Chinese writing here
http://www.karma-net.com/japanesesymbols-umi.htm <== see the kanji writing here
e.g. in difference in terms of meaning
This is a classic example:-
Meaning in Chinese = 勉強 (basic meaning:- to be forced into doing something unwillingly)
Meaning in kanji = 勉強 (meaning to study)
oh icic. I noticed that though kanji and chinese the writing looks a little similar but the pronouncation is different right? Anyone can teach on how to read kanji? thanks

yup. the writing is similar with chinese kanji. but the pronounciation is different, but some of them sometimes pronoun in da same way. but not at all.
basicly, jap kanji have 2 pronoun called onyomi n kunyomi. each kanji which stand alone with the kanji which added with other kanji pronoun inda different way.
ex. ABURA (write as "you" in jia you)
if it stand alone, pronoun as abura. but if it added with other kanji, it pronoun as YU.
i think to understand jap teks write with kanji is easier than all hiragana. bcoz, 1 japanese verb maybe have more than 1 meanings. like as far as i know, TSUKIMASU in japanese have 2 meaning. so it easier to sign what the meaning if it write in kanji.

Haha, i JUST registered for a intro japanese class next semester...hopefully i'll learn enough to understand *somewhat* what you guys are jabbering about here.... :)
how similar is japanese to chinese? i heard that having chinese background helps when learning japanese, but somehow i'm rather doubtful....
is japanese more like english, in that words are comprised of alphabets and sounded out, or is it more like chinese, where each character is a word?
Jackie
11-19-2003, 09:40 AM
The similarity is that they both use what the Japanese call, "Kanji." The Chinese characters. (There are some kanji that the Japanese made up themselves though.)
There are two ways to say your kanji. The "onyomi" and the "kunyomi". "Onyomi" is how you say the "borrowed version" of the word, and the "kunyomi" is what the Japanese called the kanji itself.
For example:
For the kanji: Mouth. 口
-Onyomi: kou コウ (written in katakana because it's "borrowed")
-Kunyomi: kuchi くち
If you will notice, doesn't "kou" sound like the way to say the Chinese version of 口?
And yes, being Chinese does help in Japanese. At least I think so. :B Im in J3 right now, and being Chinese is really helping me learn the kanji. XD;; I just have to memorize the readings. ;3
To me, it's more like Chinese...but yeah. That's just me. XD

Glad to know you are learning the language~ :) I guess you have basic knowledge about it already?
The most common "you" will be あなた、 おまえ(omae) is only used by guys to address close friends.
Your first sentence should be ありがとう ございます.
As for the second sentence, you are introducing yourself, correct? Then just "アマンダです" will do. We do not put title to our name when addressing oneself.
That's about it~ Do enjoy yourself at the forum!~ :wink2:

I think that can be an exception.....
Still a bit rude....but yeah....thats easier to find! *^^*
You see....Japanese won't even tell you they dislike something....they'll just say....its a bit....not their kind of thing....
that expression is made by saying choto after the thing they dislike.

(Tokyo version)
友達 に アホな事してると、ぶっ殺すぞ、このボケ!
Tomodachi ni a-ho na koto shiteru to, bukkorosuzo, kono boke!
Translation: If you mess with my friend, I'll kill you, you sucker!
(Osaka version - very rude!!)
友達 に ひどい事すると、いてまうぞ、ワレ!
Tomodachi ni hidoi koto suru to, itemauzo, ware!
Translation: If you mess with my friend, I'll kill you, punk (or motherf**ker, bitch)!
Obviously you don't learn that in language school. :wink2:
They're basically the same, but the Osaka version is much stronger. In general, Tokyo people are more polite. The Japanese that we learn in school is Tokyo Japanese. If you use the same kind of language with Japanese from different parts of Japan, they might think you speak funny. :wink2:

yay japanese! i learned japanese vocab from being a waitress in a japanese restaraunt. so mostly i can rattle off names of sushi and nigiri. but then i did get a bit of a vocab from my ex japanese bf. he's from Kyoto though so he has sort of a different dialect. in fact that's how it is all over Japan. the hardest thing about learning japanese is the fact that there are so many ways to speak it boy/girl informal/formal etc and there are many sorts of dialects as well. i mostly learned Kyotan boy talk...
my favorite is the word/phrase that means "that's even worse!" it sounds like McJackie Chan! and i always say Idai! when i get hurt, it sounds better than owch! and oh.. my all time favorite phrase is...
"anatawa shin-tai-xio-gai-xia" hahaha dont say that to anybody though. it means ummm something kinda bad! sumi-ma-sen! and dont say just gomi instead of gome-ne or gome-na-sai, because gomi means trash.

the only thing is what they teach u at skool is often very different to normal everyday speech, since we learn the polite language first and it's often quite formal! but no worries! you'll get there! :)

Wow, I'm very surprised, you did a great job translating, twi~light.
Here is the actual translation:
Hello, nice to meet you (all) for the first time.
everyone speaks japanese very well, especially Rachiez and lil~jo. Aren't you both Chinese? Surprised greatly. I think it's great that many of the other people are from other countries as well (other than Japan). Do you all study Japanese in school? I'm a College student from New York.
My name is Taki, pleased to meet you.
also, if you guys were curious,
Chinese person = chuugoku jin
Famikon = Nintendo (video games)
Pasokon = Personal Computer, or PC

That's pretty cool. I didn't know this website supported Japanese.
I tried to type in Japanese but it didn't work..
I'll just go back and look for the photo-essay
your grammer is pretty much correct, great job. : )
It's all right, you're doing fine. Don't give up.
Johnny's Entertainment is pretty popular.
You know, someone in the Entertainment Industry once said I was Johnny's material (I would have a chance for an audtion if I wanted to).. But since I think studying is more important, I didn't take that route.
I liked SMAP a long time ago.
Lion Heart to Yozorano Mukou tte ii kyoku dayoto omou. kiitakoto aru?
My cousin used to like Arashi, I'm not sure if she does anymore.

You look like Tackey? 本当に?たきさんはハンサムでしょう。 I'm still in first year Japanese =/ 日本語が上手じゃありません。悲しいですよ。”えらんだんだ”はなんですか。
lil~jo> If you have Windows XP, go to Control Panel ->Language Options ->Regional and Language Options ->Advanced tab, then install the Japanese package, you should be able to type in Japanese.

I am...very amused. Babelfishはとてもおかしいです。
http://img32.photobucket.com/albums/v97/wristcuttermix/gill.jpg
What's the infinitive form of the verb?
twi~light> By Johnny taki meant Johnny's Entertainment, which is a label for several boyband pop acts, I believe. By the way, I would prefer it if you call me farfie :happy: , hence my attaching "-farfie-" at the end of every message.

i don't think the 'wa' part is suppose to be in there, and if you want to be respectful, add 'gozaimasu' to the end.
yukiko

tanjyoubi omedeto gozaimasu is enough. u can delete the gozaimasu part if u both so close enough.
n the 2nd one...i dun think japanese say it. omedetou is enough btw. :)

I just studied a little Japanese, btw, I think your question must be"Nihongo shaberemasuka". The way you ask is understandable but I think the grammar is wrong. :D
