2 musical instruments I like most are both string instruments but each one of them settle within 2 different genres: classic and modern.
If you were trying to guess what instruments are they, maybe u got it right. It's violin and guitar.
I love listening to 'em both. But since guitar is so commonly heard, I like violin better.

colourblind> maybe she's trying to say ..she plays the piano and would like some chords (but I think sheet music would be more appropriate) because she plays some of Jay's songs ..so please send it to this address!...that's what I can decipher  even Singlish is easier to understand
------------------
I used to play the piano .. i got up to grade 2 and then stopped 'cos i didn't like to practice with all those scales-minor + major-and I would play practically the same songs every week...it kinda got bored + all that therory stuff made me quite
Now, I play drums.... very good instrument :-)
even though my mom keeps saying ....no girls play the drums + who wants a wife who can play drums + even if you can't find a job you can always teach piano at home even if you have kids but no-one would want to learn drums from you etc. etc.
I'm goin' to show her....since nearly every Asian family's kids that I know of are learning piano and/or violin...then when they all want to teach because there are so many piano players then there will be so much supply...but since it is just me, as a female, who plays the drums... then I will be a monopolist :D muhahaha :brows: (I love all the things I learn in economics)....diao bu diao?
like Jay said if everybody didn't smoke then he would smoke.....the same philosophy for instruments...don't follow everybody
and ppl who thought learnin' drums was much easier than piano or other instruments then I guess you may have to reconsider (there are 8 grades like piano)... when u play the drums you must synchronise your hands to hit the drums (eg. snare) + cymbals and feet as well to hit/step on the foot pedal for the bass drums + hi-hat ...you can even add more tom toms + cymbals if you want ..
now they even have electronic rubber pads which give off so many different drum sounds
my advertisement for drums aside , I think guys who can play cello (+ piano as a a bonus), no violins please, are quite attractive...esp. after seeing the black+white picture of a half-naked Jay play cello....now I am totally crazed into it......
I think if a guy would play piano after a candlelight dinner then how romantic :shy: and the deep tones of the cello highlights his masculinity

i like piano the most , although I don't have a chance to learn it. thought of learning it now, but fell that a bit too old for it.
i love seeing people play the piano, think that they have certain charisma that will attract people to them.

hey sesamestreet! my mom is exactly like yours! I've been playing the drums since i was about 8 or 9 and when i told her i wanted to learn, she said why don't you choose the piano or violin! eh in the end i got my way

I like the piano the most. I don't have that huge of a space so I have a keyboard. I don't know how to play the piano but wish to learn. :shy: I use the piano more often than a guitar I have. The keyboard is like right there and all I have to do is turn the switch button on, but if I want to play with the guitar I'll have to go threw a pile of junk and dig for it. I don't know how to play the piano either. :shy: The sound of the piano is nice and calming. The guitar is really hard to play.

Damn I have SO many instruments I like (being a rock fan) I can't choose, so i picked others. LOL..
I would LOVE to learn the drums and the bass. But I can't help but suspect my sense of rhythmn and co-ordination..
Piano.. I used to learn piano but I hated the practice. It was just too soft for me.. Not rockish enough. :brows:

i don't technically "like" piano.. it's just that i have to play it! of all the instruments, i guess piano's the one i play the most..
when i first started playing at age 7, i was sooo excited.. but it ended up being trepidation! i have to play 2 hours a day! my parents were like,
"if you don't get a good job, you can teach piano!" i guess that's right though, but how can you teach something you don't enjoy? probably later on i'll get into it... at least jay chou's plays it too!
i've always wondered what's the easiest instrument of all.. is it piano? so many people play it..

I grew up playing piano since I was young, so I'm biased. There's something about the piano's voice that is absolutely beautiful. It also has a huge range with 88 keys and many octaves( as do the other percussive instruments). Plus, its one of the few instruments that you can play solo, without any other accompaniment.
However, sometimes it can be limiting. You just move your hands up and down the keys and that's it. I'm surprised there aren't any wind instruments on this poll. (why?!!) Wind instruments are awesome... the musician takes his own breath , blows through the instrument, and then the instrument transforms their breath into a beautiful sound. (I myself used to play oboe). It's a really awesome experience . =)

i like the piano. maybe i'm biased after so many years of playing, but i truly think it sounds the best. brass instruments can sometimes sound so harsh, but they can have a nice effect when used sparingly (like in jay's ba wo hui lai le :-) ) i generally prefer percussion over strings and winds too

Violin! 'Cause I play it!
Haha... Violin is really nice for slow romantic pieces. =D
But I love piano too. It sounds good for anything.
The perfect instrumentation for a pop song, in my opinion, is guitar, drums, piano, and strings.

I guess it's piano for me. I like the different keys and the tonics just made me feel sentimental. I played piano too, although I'm still a grade one, I love piano. Another close choice would be violin though.. I love it since I heard the beginning of An Hao.

i think since piano is pretty basic in a sense that once you learn an instrument (even those besides the piano), you learn how to read music...and i guess piano is the "easiest" in that sense..(although i've had a lot of trouble w/ the piano!!!)
so i use the piano the most but actually, i like playing the flute~ and also violin... after playing the piano for 5 years, i moved on to violin then flute... so actually, i can't play the bass cliff anymore!!!

Did someone say HE HE HA HEE?? Hahaa...at least she didn't list all the instruments...
I like Piano, I like Cello, I like all things that play mellow...
Violin, Viola, Bass & Guitar, one must not forget the sitar...
Trumpets, Trombones, Sax & French Horns, brassy echos that make me mourn...
Strum it, Slice it, Blow it, Burp it...can you dig this? Hit it.
I wish 'voice' had been included in this poll. I've been in choirs since primary school & nothing beats sitting in the rain, singing some tunes while you wait for the bus to come. The instrument I use most is voice, but I don't know if I'd be able to pick one favourite instrument. For some reason, I always end up picking a fav from each section of the orchestra...so for 'strings' it's Cello, 'brass' it's Trumpet, 'wind' it's bag pipes (universal hatred for one instrument. What power it wields), and in percussion - huge clash cymbals. But if I could really be a wizz at an instrument...I would improve my piano skills and learn jazz piano. WAHH WAHH!

im a typical asian....so my choices are pretty much limited to 2 options: piano and violin.
I swear, every asian has at least taken lessons in both (i used to..than i switched to piano fultime).
i must say i prefer piano, because it not only sounds good, it can basically play EVERY SONG KNOWN TO EXIST.
With its wide range of notes, any song, no matter what key, waht octave, what pitch; it can all be played. YOu can play new age jazz, classical baroque, gothic cords, even head-banging rock if you wanted (with vocals provided of course).
Frankly, it doesn't matter what instrument you play, what is important is that you known how to play one. Most schools around where i live are cutting back on their music program, which is one of the biggest shames ever. Playing music is an integral part of my life (piano helps keep my fingers flexible, and controls perfect hand-eye coordination, plus chicks dig it :D )
i vote for cello! im a cellist!..cello has such a nice sound...very mellow
but piano not bad too...once learnt piano..but gave up.. i regret it now

Hmm i chose the piano coz i played for like ... 10 years? its okay i guess. its something enjoyable to listen to, and to know that you can play great pieces... that kinda stuff.
and to littleasian, piano cannot play Canon in D. its impossible, since Canon in D has lots of layers etc. the piano music for it is usually variations of it.
Ooh and tho i cant play, drums are great. you can thump them hard, providing you dont break the skin, and its great!

I actually like the drums the best...the drums seems more like...free to play whatever goes with the rhythm. Whatever you want goes. =)

i like piano the most because it's really soothing to me and is one of the most versatile instruments in my opinion. i also used to play it so i really like it because of that as well. i also like the cello though. it's very soothing and very elegant to me. i used to want to learn to play it, but never found the time or money to buy one and try.

the piano can play almost everysong known to exist. Also, the piano is capable of playing Canon in D Major. I assume thats the song you're refering to by Pachebel? I have 2 mp3's of canon in D Major, the original one by Pachebel and the remixed version by George Winston. Would you like me to upload it for you as proof? I fail to see how a variation of the song (which sounds exactly like the orchestral version) would not count as being playable.

I chose the piano, because I've learned for many, many years. It seemed boring at first, but as I played more, it became more enjoyable. The piano is very calming, and you can have a variety of different sounds and moods when playing.
I've also wanted to learn how to play violin, but haven't started that yet.

as for what i use the most, i play piano the most. i took lessons for piano and violin but i've quit lessons for both by 11th grade. i find that i retained my piano knowledge more than violin so that's y i like playing piano. i also played flute for a year.. dind't get much out of it.
as for what i like listening to most, i'd have to say cello. and no it's not cuz jay plays it lol. i looove the low sound it makes. violin always make my ears hurt when it's too high pitched. i have the utmost respect for ppl who can play string instruments cuz it's soooo hard to make really good quality tones! and cellos and violins always get the melody in an orchestral piece!
i mwah you

I chose guitar because it's the instrument I'd like to learn the most. ^_^ But... here's my long and boring history of musical instruments if anyone's interested. And I know you're not. :O
When I was 5, I started to learn to play the piano. Unfortunately I didn't appreciate the instrument, so I quit 6 years later when I was 11. I can still play a few simple melodies, but I'd still like to play like I used to now that I enjoy piano music... and I'd really really like to possibly learn to play the piano as the wonderfully talented Jay. T_T Nevertheless, in middle/junior high school, I joined band and played percussion and a little drum set for three years... only to quit in high school for chior. :X My little brother has a guitar now, that he rarely plays.. and doesn't know how to play... that I'd like to learn to play.. and kinda know how to play... if that makes any sense at all. The end.

nah, i have a variation of Canon in D piano music already but it just isnt the same as the original. Original Original. coz the multiple layers of strings go off in different directions- im assuming you dont have more than two hands to play rite? :?
ooh and guitar, especially electric is great. well, you can just pick it up and learn some riffs from nirvana songs etc. best- or most frequently played- smells like teen spirit intro.

Well, with an intro as exciting as that? *lol*
I think most people are in this thread cos they play some sort of instrument or have an appriciation for musical talent. So really, what you had to say is pretty interesting...that, and it is freakishly similar to my musical background. Choir, Band/Orchestra as a percussionist, & a tendancy to pinch my brothers guitar with fantasies of playing 'Hotel California' really well...
Hm... i play classic guitar, but not very good. But the instrument that i really wana play is electronic guitar, boy that sound of it really rocks!Anyway, playing piana as cool as Jay is really diao~

I vote for guitar because I play classical guitar for years, it's my main instrument. And classical guitar has unique timbre that can't be imitated by any other instrument. It's been a best friend for me.
But honestly, it's hard to vote because I love Cello and Piano. Those two are ones of greatest instruments that I want to learn. They have a great, elegant timbre. Hope I can learn them someday. :-)
Also, the piano is capable of playing Canon in D Major.Hmm...Classical guitar can play Pachebel's Canon, too. Classical guitar's transcription of Pachebel's Canon is 80% as good as the real piano version. It just lacks of pure speed and variation.

09-11-2004, 11:43 AM
cello and piano of course because i play both of them, and so does jay!
i love my piano because it's great but it throws tantrums at me at times when i need it the most...like last year, a week before my 8th grade exam. Almost died from a heart attack! it's so satisfying playing jay and alicia keys songs on the piano...i'm accompanying my friend next week on 'if i ain't got you' for her music exam so argh i need to practise but argh i have my 9th grade in 27 days so argh i'm really really stuffed
and then I love my cello because I can cuddle it, and I love its deep sound it's just so beautiful. By the way I've just named my cello. It's name is mello!
mello as in for the 'mellow' sound, for the 'melo'dy, for the marsh'mellow'. it has a triple meaning to me.
and one day i'm going to get jay to sign the neck of it!
last year i got an acoustic for my birthday; i saw it and i knew it was a girl because it sound was rather stringy and not as deep (obviously, but i'm saying compared to other guitars) so i called it granita. i'm 'trying to teach' myself and i have certainly not gone very far yet.
i am petrified of tuning mello and granita because once when i was tuning mello (a few years ago) the d string (the 3rd thickest one) snapped back and hit my chin...so now i don't touch it when it gets out of tune. I can't tune! I just wait till i meet someone who knows how to. I can't even bear to watch. thank goodness pianos don't need regular tuning.

When the time comes that I master the piano,I would love to follow Jay's footsteps.
And I think Maksim is a great pianist too.

Piano is the basic starting instrument...
I love it! With the piano you can express your emotions in the music you play as you have a great range of notes you can play, a variety of dynamics and a large choice of styles!
After learning the piano you can practically learn anything else you want.
Cello would be my second choice if I had the opportunity to pick again.
It has a nice mellow sound, which soothes the mind.

Piano. It just has this very simple complexity.
Like you could simply just play the melody, then figure out a harmony to it. And although I voted for piano, I also play Viola...not all that well though.
But anyways, back to the piano. Another benefit of it versus the viola is the fact that one can still sing.

piano i guess.. it's not that difficult to play.. and the sound is just really nice.. i dun like to play string instruments.. my hands hurts.. and sound of cello.. it's rather too low i think.. and not really good if u want to play solo.. hehe..

For me , I play keyboard most of the time , but , piano is definitely preferable to keyboard . Although keyboard provides me with lots of voices such as soprano sax, clarinet, accordion, flute, piccolo, pan flute , trombone, violin, guitar ...... I mostly pick grand piano , blend together with another voice for piano perfomance. For keyboard's perfomance , the style will surely cover the sound of piano , so, in this case, piano is not that suitable.

I didn't have to think twice. My answer was:
piano
I've liked it ever since young and took up lessons at a tender age but I wasn't patient enough and because it was my mother who wanted me to learn at that time, the interest just wasn't enough to pull me through. So I never got to finish the whole course, therefore I don't know how to play it at all. (I do give guys extra points if they know how to play the piano! Like Jay haha)
I also like the guitar, preferably electric. I find it way cool.

at the moment, i am a cello player. haha so i chose cello. i've played the piano and violin before but i stopped because of a reasons i won't say. ><"
i don't know. i really like the sound of the cello. it's so beautiful, but the sad thing is the cello parts in an orchestra are always in the background whereas the violin is usually given the solo parts.
violin is really pretty when you're playing sad, romantic songs. well, that's what i'm use to hearing on a violin.
and piano is kinda overrated but at the same time, it does have its great features. it's definitely a smart idea to learn piano first! ;D i wish i continued! >__<
haha and cello is hot when jay chou plays. like in his qing tian MV. :shy:

I like Piano the most. The keys are all lined up for you. You don't have to 'catch' the tone and its very complete.

I like to play the piano the most. The sound and melody when playing that is so sweet, nice., smooth:angel:, i think it is also good to play piano to express the feeling , and the piano is never old-fashion.

I started taking piano lessons since 6 or 7 and I'm still taking it at 16. My parents wanted me to quit a couple of times because it does take a lot of time and money but I OBJECTED, so they allowed me to continue :-) . I'm so glad they did because I learn a lot from piano and recently (2 yrs ago) I got to switch piano teachers and now I take lessons at a college, i use to have a private teacher that wasn't as proffessional but I'm so excited because I learn a lot more (techniques, etc) from my new instructor.
Well, other than the piano, if i had more time (& money  ) I would like to learn how to play the chinese piano, u no, the one with strings, sry, dunno wat it's called. and the flute too

piano piano piano! Cos its jay's main instrument!!
But also cos if you can play the piano, you can play the keyboard, and you can change instrument noises on a keyboard to things like guitar. so if you choose piano, you arereally choosing all instruments!!!

i voted for the piano but dont get me wrong, i love the guitar. its just that piano seems to be much easier for me to play anything i want. maybe its cause im not as skilled in guitar as i am in piano. but i would love to play more instruments like the flute or other strings

I think that the piano is the most beautiful instrument in the ENTIRE WORLD! but sadly, I only learned how to play flute since I never acknowledged the piano until 6th grade, and by then I felt it was too late to start...:/

Well, there's a difference between liking an instrument and using it most. My parents forced me to play the piano for about 7 years, but I hated it. And do you mean like the sound of it or like playing it?

Voted for piano. Was surprised to see the it lead other instruments by so much. I stopped playing a few years ago but recently was thinking of going back to it once I am able to get a hold of a decent electronic keyboard.

I play the piano, I love music, so naturally I prefer the piano. Sometimes when I hear those old classical songs on piano, it sounds so great and I'll never be able to play that well, so I get jealous
But nowadays I rarely play piano anymore, I need a new one and it just costs too much that's why I am not playing - I already finished my piano course anyway.
Muahahahahahahahaha.
I took piano lessons for 10 years but haven't touched it for a long time now. I'm currently learning drums. Been a dream for the longest time and I finally got down to taking lessons. It's awesome fun.
I'm now contemplating if I should buy a drum set for home.

PIANO....i like it because its the most versatile instrument! all u need is a piano and u can compose any song! also, it allows me to play jay's songs! :D
and i use it the most because its the only instrument i can play! HAHA....maybe its because i havent learnt any other instument, but i find the piano most straight forward...just put your hands on the keys and MUSIc comes out~~~

Its a close call between guitar and piano.
A guitar may come handy. Able to cater is most of the occasion. Classic.
While a piano, its brilliant on annual dinner and prom night. Where you will be under spotlight from the moment you play the key. Stylish and cool.
Althought both instrumental are great in my sights, both are rated equally to me.
But on days like this, guitar seems to be more down to earth.
