It's a romantic comedy about a young gay guy going to Taipei and his first experience of love.

Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formula_17
This movie starts with the naive countryman Zhou Tian Cai. He goes to Taipei to meet his friend (Ban Shou Ren) who he met online. Believing in "true love", his friend really disappoints him by saying that he would like to have sex with him. "How can we make love if there is not love between us?" Tian Cai asks.

And so begins his life in Taipei working in a fitness gym, hanging out with friends, and meeting the guy of his dreams. There are also some major makeout/kissing/sexual scenes in here.

I think this is the first Taiwanese movie to feature homosexuality as its main topic and theme. Actually it doesn't really address it, but treats it as the norm, there are no mention of any heterosexual relationships in here, which I find refreshing. There's a lot of stereotypes in here with stereotypical characters, but the main character is just your average guy next door.

Anyone else seen it?? What did you think of it?

jakinni where did you watch the movie? Its banned in Singapore, so the vcd won't be sold here, and the only way to get a copy of the movie would be to fly to taiwan to get the vcd! Darn....it seems really interesting. I've only seen the mv by Rock Bang (Your happiness is because of me) and it had shots of the show!

Is it? Angels?! Wow! Luckily when my friends and I were in Taiwan for vacation and we managed to watch it!! XD My friends and I were giggling! :shy: oops.. never seen such a show before..call me a mountain tortoise or a girl who has not been out to this world..

I think this is a typical love story except that both characters are of the same sex.. ^^; I find it sweet and lovey-dovey when they make eyes to each other but a bit embarrassed when they make love. I mean they really do it! ><;;

Interesting was that young girls giggled in the moive theatre too...and to our surprise, Taiwan didn't rate it as R-rated! but PG! Taiwan sure is open-minded in such things.

I downloaded it from Bittorrent. Gosh, it's banned?? Didn't know it was THAT controversial.

Yes, when they went to bed, I was surprised by the length of the footage, but some how I wasn't put off by it, maybe because they're both attractive guys? But one thing I noticed was that when they were making out, they hardly had any body-to-body contact. I gotta give it to the actors for being professional about it and actually going through with all that. I read they two guys had downed several beers before doing that scene. I thought Bai Tie Nan was hot, his hair, clothes, and beautiful smile. Hehe, I liked the parts when they're narrating stories, all the dramatic lighting and music.

As for Taiwan being open about it, I guess they are. I mean they had a serial drama based on a book about homosexuals, I think it's called "Crystal Boys/Nie Zi" and that was filmed in quite a realistic way and really explores the kind of life the gay men had to lead once they decided to come out.

oh yes...Singapore is still not quite open to such things..sex..homo..lesbian...etc.. :wink2: so we tend to be a little bit simple-minded?

Oh yah. It was hilarious and managed to watch the typical way of Taiwanese lifestyle. :-)
I find the other guy quite cute. He's a new guy in the industry right? I saw them in Kang Xi Lai Le and as usual it was funny! :D

I like the lead. His name's Yang You Ning i think, shot to fame with this movie and apparently there was rumours that an unamed rich tycoon wanted to bao yang him.

They really did that in the show? no wonder Singapore banned it. Apparently they had planned to show it here during the film festival, but from a survey done, they found that most Singaporeans couldn't accept the idea of gays and the show had actually portrayed gays as very common, every one on the street may be one.

I thought he has a girlfriend? rumors are rumors...
Oh is it? I didn't know..heck..my friends even wanted to watch it again! They are so crazy about this show! I mean they even go to the extent to buy related products like the book. :-)
The show is just portraying the real society and let us know that there is this bunch of people out there and don't have to see them as ailens in a comedic way. They are human afterall. :wink2:

The lead is cute too, in an innocent way. I think he was also in that serial drama about homosexuals I mentioned earlier, where he played a small role about a boy who almost got into a homosexual relationship with his friend, but was caught by the school guard, and they were expelled. I could be wrong.

The lead acted in Emil Chau's mv with Fan Zhi Wei. They were good friends, and later found out that they were ahem in love with each other. There was this weird kissing scene in one of their rooms.

wow, does anybody know how the tw audience is reacting to this? is this kinda like an "indie" film over there or what? hmm, but i vaguely vaguely remember that a gay movie was out in taiwan before. i just remember hearing about it or something. but i never know because i can't differentiate between dream and real anymore...haha. anyway, this looks very interesting. the guys are also pretty cute, teehee!

hi :-) the movie is currently shown in Bangkok but in an indie (movie) theatre named House. However, the place is too far from my place so i think i might watch it from vcd. There should be vcd out here but don't know when. :D

The lead "Yang You Ning" just won a "Best Newcomer" award at the 2004 Golden Horse Awards. Which i think he deserves for that bashful yet curious performance in the show.

I just watched it, the leading boy surely has the sweet smile. The story line is kinda interesting, I like the way of the director presents it as the usual thing. The love relatinship like boy and gal. It's a breakthough movie !
Congrats to him getting that award, I also think he deserves it.

haha initially i wasn't too interested in this movie, but seeing how the lead (yang you ni) got the golden horse award for his performance there....my interest was piqued.

of course, him being on ASOS twice and being mauled by xiao s (she's obsessed with him....we're talking about major advantage taking here - she made him act out this scene in the movie where the other guy pounces on him on the road, saying something about "love, love, love", does that sound familiar to anyone?) i'm now trying to get my hands on it too! :-)

edit:
oh! i just watched it....
i understand now what you guys are saying about how the relationship between guys is the norm in the movie.....they didn't show any girl-guy couples at all....

initially i gotta confess that the idea of watching 2 guys (albeit CUTE ones) sounded not my thing, and i thought i'd be a little put off....
but after watching it i was like.....hm......that wasn't bad :-)

you're right, pamujung the lead actor yang you ni has a really sweet smile! (and a really good bod too, haha  )
but honestly, that bed scene with him and duncan, they did a pretty good job.....somehow it didn't really hit me that it was 2 guys!

response to an old question but Formula17 was one of the highest grossing movies in Taiwan when it came out last year, and people loved it, especially the teenage crowd up to the early 30s surprisingly

this is something of note, since most Taiwanese films are shunned by Taiwanese peeps, it's just some mentality that HK and mainland films are better.

I'm in love with the opening theme actually right now, and the lead actor for a Taiwanese ranks up with Jay in my book as "cute as fXck" bonus points if you can tell me who said that () =)

Ahh I'm bringing this topic alive again XD

OMG this has to be one of my favorite movies now - I only watched it becuase I'm interested in Eternal Summer (still got to go to HMV to buy the VCD XD) The two main leads are good and I'm just like "OMG YES THEY FINALLY KISSED!!"

The mirror part was hilarious, and the figure part was one of the most memorable scenes.

I also have to buy the OST, it's fantastic XD

(I know I'm a little late in saying how much I love this movie though =x)

It's all good :3

I've definitely watched this movie more than once and it's always fun introducing it to new people to watch. I love watching their reactions and it has all been nothing but positive :]

Every single scene is a favorite, although I think the plumber scene was the most hilarious XD
