View Full Version : What makes a happy life? Health or Wealth?

Some say that money is the root of evil. For example, a rich man may accumulate a lot of wealth. When he dies, his children fights for his wealth. Brotherly and sisterly love vanished in a poof of smoke. Lawsuits and physical threats follow up. So, do these events make a happy life? I do not think so.
Apart from that, most of us work day in and day out just for the sake of our wages. You may accumulate millions in a few decades but your health will deteriorate as well if your body lacks physical activity. Howard Hughes died rich but forlorn, rich business tycoons died at an early age from numerous ailments. But take a glance at the late mother Teresa. She had an average life and dedicated herself to help the lost and needed. Although she is not wealthy, she lived to an old age of approximately eight decades.
Well, some of us would argue that health can be bought by wealth, I disagree. It is said that prevention is better than cure and that statement proves to be true even until today. If you are healthy, you can survive by earning a modest income whereas when you are sick and lying on your bed, what can you achieve? To live a happy life, health always comes as the first priority.
“With health comes wealth”, or “No money no talk”, which statement do you prefer to stick to? Well for me, in order to live a happy life, a healthy body always outweighs a rich individual who does not care about anything else. In conclusion, being healthy or wealthy has its pros and cons and different people have different views about it. However, is it worthy of a try to gamble your health to accumulate wealth? I would let you decide. :wink2:

Yes, i agree, a healthy body is worth more than any wealth in the world...
Think of it this way, even if you have all the money in the world, it's not gonna do you any good if you're dying of cancer or any other terminal diseases.
"With health comes wealth" is a very true statement, i find. If you have a healthy body and also a healthy mind, you could always think of ways to aquire money, even if it's just doing menial tasks like being a garbage man.

well.. a healthy body is a good thing.. but from my perspective.. to make me happy.. i would have to say money... i kno how everyone goes friends are more important than money... but seriously.. money is GOOOD..
im not saying that i place money over my friends, but im saying money is an essential need for ME to be happy... cos seriously... if you're all healthy, and you have family and friends.... you would need money to be truly happy i think.
but i think money can happiness, but only to a certain limit... it cant buy ALL Happines, but a NICE portion of it

I think health is more important than wealth, because when you're sick you're miserable and can't have a good time because all you can think about is the fact that you feel horrible, but at the end of the day, I don't think either of those things can really make you happy. I know a lot of people who are completely healthy and have plenty of money, but they're still lonely or unfulfilled.

i think health would be the most important to make someone's life happy. With wealth, but without health, we would not be able to enjoy ourselves.
Just imagine, you got tons of money and you can use it to travel around the world, but if you are not healthy, you would not have the energy to do it, you may be unfit for travelling or may have to carry around different types of medication and what's the point of having a lot of money then?
Although with wealth, you can say that you could get better treatment and more well-known doctors to treat you, but certain illness are for a lifetime and cannot be cured

because of all the reasons ppl just mentioned, i think both are equally important. wealth because so much of this society is based on wealth. sure it doesn't guarantee happiness but it sure makes getting there easier. and it also depends on how you define "health"... a person might have a broken leg but still consider themselves healthy where as someone else might just have a cold and not consider themself healthy.

health and wealth are both equally important in making a happy life... :-)
if you are sick, you need money to treat it
if you have money, you will need health to spend it

I would say health makes a happier life even though wealth does indeed make a happier life but how are you going to be able to spend the money if you are unhealthy all the time. I guess sometimes even when I have a simple cold, even doing simple daily tasks in life seems so much harder. A headache forbids me to fully concentrate on school work and study plus lack of sleep due to constant runny nose etc etc. A soare throat would make eating some of my favorite foods tasteless and unmeaningful. Or say I broke my leg ..walking around would be very irritating and it would forbid me to walk around the mall and shop for hours. I guess those things are just short term but what about long term sickness? If my body can't function properly all the time and forbids me to do daily tasks and things I love doing everyday or passionate about .. I don't think life would be meaningful nonetheless happy. I mean I think money is a pretty important thing as well.. afterall, it is human nature to want more money because money stands for power and everyone wants the money to seek for finer things in life for a better lifestyle etc.. but from my experience and opinion, if I really had to chose one or the other I would most likely chose health more than wealth.

well, I say, Wealth. Yea yea, i'm one materalistic Gal. But, if you could think. You have no health but have the money. the least you could do is to treat it without having worries to your financial burden. Think about it, if you're poor, you're sick. even if just a simple operation, you wouldnt have the money to seek medical help. =X
But there's a saying about being rich will result in having a poor body..example? My poor darling, JAY! he's got lotsa money but it cant buy him some comfort in his back. But Oh wells, people like him get their poor health cuz they're too busy to even care about it. SO..money is important, with that, you could buy everything BUT health, however, you can afford some REAl treatment. :wink2:
But in anyways, i think it work both ways. you have the health, you get to work for money. You have the money, you get to treat your illness. :D den you'll be happy!~
with that, i would be happy if i meet JAY!! :rasp:

Well.............. they are pretty much tied together if you think about it.
Sometimes, if you don't have wealth, you live in bad surroundings and might have a non-healthy body condition.
This is not good and will not make you happy.
But overall, health is worth more than wealth, because if you're about to die rich, still, your brain will not be pondering what to do with your money, but to live the rest of your little life well...
doesn't this make sense?
Besides, if you can't work because your body is in bad condition, then you can't go make money.

i agree, money and health are both an essential need. but, if im sick, im definetly gon need money to cure myself... and i dont think i would have a problem with dying rich... i'll just giv it to my family members....
i guess health is more important, but i'd perfer money... that's why there's charities who help sick ppl , make their wish come true.. they need money.. so i guess money makes me happier

Honestly I think it depends on what type of person you are. There's the whole thing with how health and wealth are related... Like with money you can get cured. But that all depends on how much you know about the medicines and the body, doesn't it? For example, someone in a third world country is sick, but they get better not with money but with natural healing, because they have the knowledge and experience to help themselves.
I think money is a real funny thing. One minute it brings you joy and the next it could kill you. Greed and money go together, and greed isn't a very happy thing, is it? I think health makes life happy --the longer live, the more you can enjoy things. Doesn't that sound nice?
another thing that mkes life happy: candy. go eat some. it'll suck out all the negative vibes. nn;

Health.
If you're healthy, then you should be happy. Of course, if you're stressed about a relationship, or school, then you're not necessarily 100% healthy. Money can be your problem to stress, or what not as well.

of course it is health.even if u have all the money u cant spend it without health.u have to have ur health first then when u have all the money u want u can spend it all u want.like go on trips, meet jay,and go shopping.if u dont have health then u'll spend all ur money on meditcation and stuff.
I definitely say HEALTH. Wealth is just an illusion. Health is important. Without it you can't live. People fight over wealth and some end up abusing their bodies for it. It creates such unhappiness.

i think that health and wealth are both important, altho health is significantly more important than wealth. i know, i know, you guys are probably thinking "this kid's a 12-year-old, what can he know?" just hear me out  you must be healthy to sum extent to even EXIST. and the healthier you are, the happier you will be. wealth makes you even happier, but wkhwa said, being too rich will cause troubles. as for wealth, i would like to be rich enuff to be considered rich in my town, but not rich enuff to get ppl to be seriously jealous. also, you need to be loved and to have someone to love to have a happy life. without love, there is almost no point of living, if you're isolated and no one really gives a damn about you. also sumthing thatz similar to love is a feeling of importance. if you don't feel important, life will be miserable. i don't mean like all important like bush or sumthing, just important for sum ppl to care about you. thatz basically the same thing as love tho.
I do agree that if you have a better health, your life would be happier in a sense, however it doesn't apply to all people though. Everyone is different with different situations. You could grow up in dirt poverty and work your ass off and live long to be 90 years old and yet still suffer from unhappiness because you wished you could have paid to get a better education or buy things your children need and not see them follow your life. Money doesn't mean you can't achieve happiness.
hence wkhwa I feel that you're using alot of stereotypes to back up your about health vs. money to gain happiness argument.
For example, a rich man may accumulate a lot of wealth. When he dies, his children fights for his wealth. Brotherly and sisterly love vanished in a poof of smoke. Lawsuits and physical threats follow up.
NOT all rich people who die leave this consequence. Rich people can be happy too because they are human too. This is a stereotype.
You may accumulate millions in a few decades but your health will deteriorate as well if your body lacks physical activity. Howard Hughes died rich but forlorn, rich business tycoons died at an early age from numerous ailments.
what if I said people who worked in land mines or railroads? That's damn physical activity, AND they're poor and their health deteriorate too. Can you prove that rich business tycoons die at early age from numerous ailments? And can you prove that they don't magically buy excercise equiments to work out or have trainers? Again, stereotypes.
Well, some of us would argue that health can be bought by wealth, I disagree. It is said that prevention is better than cure and that statement proves to be true even until today.
Again, I just feel that you're basing this on stereotypes and hence a general mark against rich people that because they work so hard for their money they won't enjoy life and they'll die unhealthily vs. a modest man who works just to get by but finds happiness in the simple things. That's a bit idealistic don't you think? I'm not attacking you personally, but I just wanted to get the whole stereotyping thing off my shoulders.
pyro_sign, I couldn't agree more.

I just don't think lifelong happiness can be achieved with health or wealth. Can you not feel empty and lonely as an Olympic athlete in tiptop shape? Or if you were Britney Spears? If you don't find purpose in life, nothing else, materialistic or otherwise, can bring joy at all.
Personally, I believe that to lead a happy life, you'd have to be happy with yourself, within yourself. Some people find it through religion, some through wealth, some through health, etc. Regardless of what you define as happiness, I believe that as long as you've reached that goal you set for yourself intrinsically, that should count as a happy life.

yes, religion is another thing, ene. keep in mind tho that a majority of the world are atheists. only a few people with strong religious beliefs are existing. many people, i've heard, say religion just manipulates one's mind and destroys it, but i don't think that's true. they say that just becoz they parents didn't raise them with any religion and they don't even know everything yet about religion. they never took it up in skool.
other people are also happy when they've achieved an educational attainment. just graduating from college makes them happy enough, even if they will have some teething troubles when they're working. once you've earned your degree, it's already considered as a big accomplishment naturally. it'll be easy for you to find your job getting you enough salary to buy all the things you ever dreamed of.

excuse me for interrupting, but where'd you get the idea that a majority of the world are athiests. lemme clarify for you.
0.4% of the world is Jewish. 6.2% are Buddhist. 13.1% are Hindu. 17.2% are Muslim. 32.9% are Christian. 16.7% are nonreligious (this doesn't ONLY include athiests; there's anogstics too), and 13.5% are other. As you can see, nonreligious people are definitely NOT a majority of the population.
but i don't think that's true. they say that just becoz they parents didn't raise them with any religion and they don't even know everything yet about religion. they never took it up in skool.
I don't think it's necessary to be "born" into a religious family for one to embrace a religion. I've seen many friends around me who embraced a religion halfway through life. I believe that religion serves to help some "see the way" through life. Others may find it through their jobs, their families, etc. Like I said above, it all boils down to what you want and who you wanna be.
Anyway, moving away from religion and back to the question of a happy life

Erm... i think that health is more important... even if u r so rich n u don't have a good health, u won't be able to enjoy the wealth that u have... there are many things in this world which wealth cannot bring u... with good health then can u work n pursue ur dream!

i think health is what makes a happy life. have you guys ever heard somebody say "In your youth, you spend all you health to make wealth, When you are old you spend all your wealth to make health" ?? well thats really true in my opinion. when we are young i don't think we realize how important our health is until it is too late. my parents now pay double or triple the price to buy only organic food in order to be healthy. the way i used to see it was that food is food, the cheaper the more you can buy. when we are young all we care about is money money money, we see money to be the key of our future and success. when we are old and wealthy, the key to success is living longer.

Money isn't the all-important factor in life, but in your teen years, money is pretty important, due to the lack of it that most teens have. Teens care less about health, and would rather work to get lots of money :D

this is a toughie, as i value health AND wealth very highly. but when i rationalize it out, health does have to take precedence, because you can be healthy and then work hard to get poor - whereas even if you're born rich with a crappy body, no amount of medication or surgery can really make you strong and well. given a choice, i would choose health over wealth.

I don't know how you could explain that weath means happiness? You could be wealthy but sufferring on your death bed. Personally, I believe that health is the answer to everything. I should sleep earlier then.....
i can buy things to make myself happy!
that's exactly my thoughts though. "i should go to sleep earlier, so i can have better health", but then i think "but i have to finish this assignment and do all of these things so i can get into university, get a good job, and make money."
i'm a really superficial person though.
i think that money is extremely important in my life. while if given a choice of being dirt poor, and being healthy or having arthritis and being in pain and being superbly rich, i would choose being dirt poor, but very grudgingly while bawling my eyes out.
i don't want fame. i don't want to be good looking. i just want money.
it might be because i don't really think in terms of hypothetical situations. you hear a lot of stories about how rich people are desperately unhappy and want to buy happiness, but i believe it's your mentality. you can be homeless and happy, or you can be rich and not happy. so i think having wealth or health will help you become happier, but one without the other will still have cause for angst.
Health and wealth..Both are important things to have, i think.
Without health, wealth means nothing. Without wealth, health means nothing too..
Without money, you can't have healthy life..or say at first, you are very healthy but not wealthy..you think about your unwealthy condition all the time (a common thing that happens), you will get sick, get a lot of pressure and the result is you are not healthy anymore, and unhappy off course.
*without wealth, i can't buy Jay's ticket concert* :boxed:
Withouth health, what can you do with your money?? Paying for medication maybe..that's no fun..and unhappy thing to do too..
*without health, i can't go to Jay's concert* :ill:
So, it's better to get both in a balance...i don't wanna choose wealth over health or health over wealth

definatly health worths much more than wealth...in some rich families, there r children who r born wif birth defects e.g. like hole in the heart etc. Even when they have the money to spend on surgery to overcome the defects, the child even at a young age had to suffer.
I hope that the rich ppl out there will not think that wif money they can cure ani type of illness and thus neglect the importance of a healthy lifestyle... they must not think that they can use money to buy organs if oneday their organs failed...they shld not deprive less well-off ppl of the much needed organs juz bcoz they've the money....

There are pros and cons for both of them..having health is also good but then meaning u have no wealth? what if u choise wealth u get no health? id chose health.. no matter what u do with your money u cant have the health u desire.. thse are two extremes.. this is like saying personality over looks.. two extremes.. if u choose looks then that person would be incredibly good looking but bad personality.. and if u chose personality than that person would have best personality but bad looks like u wnat to punch them inthe face and take a bat and... ok well thats an example of health over wealth.. again if u chose one u dont get the other.and no middle in between them.. money isjust paper... ppl live theirlives and then when they die they dont even spend their money the saved up.. health for me because you can still be happy witout money

I agree with lynette_swan. I feel that health and wealth is a factor for a true happy life. Without money, you'll have to struggle to make ends meet. Without health, you can't do many things, but lie down in bed most of the tme. This is boring, you'll juz feel like endin your life earlier. So to conclude, health and wealth is important!

I totally agree with you Aina. I think everything in life should get balance to one another. Withouth health rich people will not have time to have fun with the money and maybe he/she only use the money to get some medical treatment. And without wealth...you will suffer. No matter how healthy you are but if you are very poor and have no money to buy food..you will end up sick too.

well, people in their minds would say health, but in their heart, it is wealth. personally, i say health because just as long as you are well, nothing else matters.but if you have lots of money and you buy lots of stuff, then you would be more worried about your belongings and possessions. money can cause much greater problems and also.......here in england, your council tax will soar.
poor healthy people are the happeist because they have nothing to worry about because they are in perfect health and are able to do anything.

actually i find health will make a better and happier life, with wealth people will turn to become bad.. and eventually soon he/she will be like so evil because once you are rich you think that you are the biggest and can do anything you want. but this are for some people, not all are like this..
health is the main thing that will make us lead a happy life, with health you can do everything positively..
health is also important because you can live longer!! and grow up to a ripful age..!!
you can also enjoy everything around you and make new friends, play sports or go out for a chat with friends.. this will really more your life happier and lead a healthy life.

Tough decision but I got to go with wealth.
Hey,I'm not that materialistic! I'm just being practical. We're ought to be wise these days. :shifty:
Nowadays are the times of hardships so I decided to choose wealth and put health aside.
Look,if you've got wealth and let's say a staggering amount of wealth,
even if your health is at risk, you can always get a special treatment from
the world's no.1 doctors, nurses, and health specialists anytime you want.
You can easily command with wealth because - c'mon, let's admit it -
money is one of the most important - if not THE most important thing in the world today.
Wealth is essential.A good health is likewise necessary.
But in times of need,a stable and good health wouldn't be able to feed your family,
send your children to school or pay your monthly bills.
Your health is always at stake. It could perish anytime especially when you least expect it.

money cannot do "million things" , but money is what you cannot do without.

Well, I agree that it's hard to live without wealth ~ yet you can still find happiness. Look to the world around, just because people don't have wealth, doesn't mean they can't be happy. Yet I haven't found any rich people who are terribly sick and still happy, just because they have the money to buy stuff.
in my opinion, health and wealth go hand in hand...
if you are poor but healthy, you will constantly be complaining about not being able to have a better life and you cant really live the way you want to..
if you are wealthy but not healthy, your money is either spent on some sort of treatment to help you with your unhealthy body or you wont be able to spend it on things or actions that make you happy...
therefore, i think that just being healthy and having enough money to survive without struggling a lot is good enough

to me. Health is more important. but of course no money sucks as well. usually when people asked me these kind of questions before i would straight away say the obvious one that was correct.. for example..
Health or wealth?
HEALTH!
money or love?
LOVE!
etc etc etc.
but it occured to me. that this is not true .. i mean of course health IS very much more important to me. but if you have ONLY health and no money.. then it will be hard to be happy. So i think it's good to have more health..
but only to an extent.
it is true that money alone cannot make one a happy person..
because having money without love or someone to share it with. or someone to laugh about it with..
its just a worthless life..
i dont really know what im saying..
you need both???
ah!! confusing!
these life questions really get me thinking.

I think health and spending your life with the people you love is what makes a hapy life. Wealth is only a temporary thing and can become useless over night if hte economy crashes. Health throughout your whole life would make you happy and not have to worry about sicknesses like cancer and things like that. But you can have the most money in the world and have some sickness that will lead to your death and there is no cure for it and with all your money, you still can't save yourself.

“With health comes wealth”...i think i would really really like to choose this sentance...but...isnt this world a "no money no talk" world?!?! people with no money...e.g a begger...would you even go near him/her?? if no1 goes near that person...issit likely that they will seek happiness?? no money where would we find health?? which comes first? money or health??
maybe....sometimes wealth so give happiness....i think as long as happiness exsist...in the end...it is very hard to divide wealth from health....so in conclusion....both is as important as each other.....am i making any sense??!

So what if one have tones of money...is he/she going to bring it into his/her coffin when he/she dies? Think about it...
Without health, u cannot live well...what's more use your money for some luxuries? i doubt he/she will enjoy themselves...

People, Health and Chocolate :-)
but i think, being CONTENT about what you have, what you are is also perenially important. a person won't be happy if they keep striving for more and more possessions, never being satisfied.
like in 'if i ain't got you'-
some people want diamond rings
and some just want everything
but everything beats nothing!

I would think health... you can't put a price on that. Even if you get sick and you have a lot of money to recover from it, fate decides whether you will die or not kinda thing xD Overall at the end of the day if you are rich, you are just like any other being on this planet. =) So I would say health ^^

It's having a good healthy family, good husband+a little boy and a nice house. Just somewhere where I feel comfortable and safe! I guess I am just traditional! ^^

Everyday that you wake, every breath that you take...is another chance given to make your life whatever it is you choose..happiness is not about possession, not about longevity...it is about the moments of extraodinariness...every moment we have a choice...do we let it pass or are we going to make it more extraordinary than the last??...

I think I rather be wealthy. Cos though you are sick you can use the money to treat yourself. Yes, there are things that you can't do due to poor health but there is something that can subsitute it.Enjoy the luxury that wealth can bring while you are still alive.
To be healthy might not bring wealth. It brings only the possibility of it. You need luck, opportunties and a certain amount of determination (which not many people can have it).
So I rather be wealth but sick I guess...

I'd rather be healthy than wealthy. You can't buy health with wealth. Of course it might make you feel better if you can buy the meds but if there can't be anything done to you any longer then that would suck. Not only to yourself but to other people as well. If you're healthy, you can still try to find wealth. [You could always be like Anna Nicole and marry an 88 year old billionaire] but if you're not healthy a.k.a sick... How are you supposed to make money? Of course unless the money in your bank account flows like water..
Hahaha.. Oh crap. I'm getting all philosophical. =x

Health is the best of all cause if your sick well u cant do anything you have all this money but your health is bad and ur really sick you wont be able to use that money so its just all a waste if your healthy and strong you might make some money even though money is important

particularly, health is important! you cant do anything right without a healthy, abled body, that includes making money (wealth).. however..i think wealth is important too! no one would says that you would live forever without falling sick..so..here's where money come in and get yourself treated to regain the good health again! :D
but to me..i would want a good healthy life than a sick life with tons of money! >< there are lots of things in which money cant give you! :)

Health is obviously more important. Although in this century wealth makes a great deal and to lead a so called "comfortable" life you need money.
well. yes money is important. however health CANNOT be bought. think of it. even if you have money and you get some disease or incurable sickness, even if you spend lots to treat, you'll still live with the burden.. and you cannot do much if your body is weak and sick.. i would rather die happy with much accomplished in my life than die with lotsa money but no real happiness..
however if wealth gives you real happiness(depends on how you use it), and you have a healthy body, then all the better! hahas.. you see,, it's vice versa.. both are equally important, but i put health FIRST.

Health, lol, if you only have a bit of health, then wouldn't you be essentially in pain and suffering to comensate for wealth? The trade-off is too big.
Well, that defers depending on your own criteria of living. However, I would definitely choose health over wealth cause what is the point of having tons of cash in the world but never being able to spend it? wisely.
To be happy is very simple... Just be content with what u have now and u will be the happiest person in the world.

From the collection of the replies, i can safely say the majority would go with health. When you all say you rather die healthy than die sick with money, that is not generally a good thing. Think about it, if you had all the money while having a sickness. You would ofcourse spend some to find a cure for the disease, maybe you'll find one and maybe you wont. If you dont, then atleast u started a project to help a population with the same disease. Who says wealth cant buy happiness, having all the money you want, and the ability to own anything you want without limitations. Wealth can give health, just see how much that money can get you; Personal trainers, personal gym, training equipment, personal weight watcher, etc.
BUUTTTTT...... i choose health over wealth because i dont care about money, only my health, happiness and family.

While it is of course obvious that everyone wants both health and wealth, sometimes one is just taken away from you...
My uncle once was very rich... But he had those bad habits... Drinking, smoking, and you know, having fun.. He loved to drown his sorrows in beer and such... But as you know, beer is acidic.. So he passed away from liver failure..

both of them makes a healthy life, without wealth u can not be healthy, to be happy you need wealth which than makes u healthy. lol i wonder if this confuses people.

I myself think healthy life is wealth. Healthy life is what money cant buy and without a healthy life, you got as much as wealth also no use.
So healthy life is wealth =D

I believe loved ones make happyness.
If you have poor health - but can give your family (loved ones) a good life with wealth, you'll be happy.
If you are healthy, and can spend time with your family, you'll be happy, regardless of poverty.

Health is of course the first thing. You can have all the happiness you want and live with happy terms...in taiwan, they say that if you sleep good, eat good, that is healthy, and that way, is the best way to get rid of stress...^^

It really depends on the person. Some people only feel happy if they are healthy while for others, living a long and healthy life without regrets in the most important factor. Culture has a lot to do with it. The American culuture preaches more of an live your own life style and be happy whereas some other cultures might link wealth with happiness. Like what others have said, sometimes being wealthy can lead to health.

health
If you have your health you have Everything you care for and worth for.'
Moeny is the root of all evil yes.
But you need money to survive, To simply exchange for worldly goods. To get along and live,
Although you dont really need Money to find love or to find something you find important.
Anything can be taken away. If All your money was taken away you still have your health. Your health is everything o.O
I mean where would you be without. and it feels so crap to be unhealthy
