Hey...i'm currently in shanghai for an exchange programme.

Anyhow, read online that Jay will most probably be having his Incomparable Concert here on 1st July 2005. Details are not out yet, but i saw the concert date down on one ticketing website.

Count me in! I'm currently studying Mandarin in Shanghai Jiao Tong University. After this semester, I plan to look for work and hopefully be based here for a long, long time

Angels_on_clouds How long are you staying here and which school are you studying at? I already watched the Incomparable Concert in Taipei last October but I'd love to watch Jay perform all over again this July. May I have the ticketing website you mentioned? Thanks!
Maybe we can meet up one day if you want and hang out...

oh i'm at Fudan University on exchange till mid july. There's another jc.net member here, abra16. She's a full time undergraduate here. Am still considering whether to go coz his concert is held during my exam period, and also coz i've watched his Incomparable concert in Singapore too. Though i tink my friend abra16 might be interested.

here's the link. you could call and ask for more details.

oh you're friends with abra? we're both LQPers, though I haven't met her yet.
I definitely won't miss his concert here but I'm afraid I can't afford to get the best seats. They're too expensive! *sigh*

OK, I'm posting here as the thread I started got closed.
My teacher said that Jay was in Beijing doing a small gig 2 weeks ago.
He didn't get shot.
If he's only gonna start his tour in July in Shanghai, fine then! I won't be in China, I'll be going back end of May. That's the only reason I asked if he was gonna do a concert in May.
Hope you guys don't think too bad of this newbie.

I completely have no idea. I've only been to one concert and that was APC's one last year in Sydney. They had a mosh pit and a lil seated area for the sitters. Yea, but I'm not sure about the one in Shanghai. I hope they have a mosh pit too, so I can jump around and stuff.

I am now in Beijing... will be here for a while. Seems like no one's from here.

By the way, any good places to shop in Shanghai coz' I might be going there.

I am not looking for branded items. Just more so of those small shops that sell stuff from Japan or Hong Kong? Any recommendations, my Shanghainese friends?

lene
04-03-2006, 08:10 PM
Hey I've been living in Shanghai for a year now.

For shopping, you may want to try:

1. Xiang Yang Market (10 am to 8:30 or 9 pm, along Huai Hai East Rd.; Bus 911 or 926; subway - Shanxi Nan Lu stop) This is a favorite destination of tourists. You can find mostly clothes, bags and shoes here, knock offs actually. It can get really crowded on weekends, so I suggest you go there on a weekday. They overcharge so bargain until you slash the price down to about 30-40% of the original.

2. Hotwind - http://www.hotwind.net/ They have branches all over the city (oops just checked the website and apparently they have branches all over China too, including Beijing!) and they sell mostly shoes (their ladies' shoes are really very pretty, and reasonably priced too), clothes and sporting stuff. Lots of export overruns too.

3. Changle Lu - This street is dotted with clothing stores that have really good stuff.

In general, imported stuff are so much more expensive here. For regular items, you may find them more expensive here compared to Beijing. If you need anything else, feel free to get in touch with me. If I have time, I can even show you around

Oooooooooh, Lene, that's so sweet of you for offering to show me around. I won't be going to Shanghai that soon but I'd be sure to drop you a note to let you know. I have been to Xiangyang the last time I was there, but nothing caught my fancy.

As for Hot Winds, yeah, they have it here too in Beijing. In fact, there are 2 of these shops near where I live! I'd be sure to try Changle Lu when I'm there.

Anyone has any recommendations for Beijing?

jes!

Hey there, I should be relocating to Shanghai soon. Have been doing a bit of househunting. So Shanghai Jay fans ... here I come!!!

By the way, have you all heard of the upcoming S.H.E. concert in July? Jay's gonna be their guest star!!!! :excited:

lene
06-19-2006, 03:09 PM
cool! welcome to Shanghai! :excited: I'm looking forward to meeting you.

When are you coming here? I remember we exchanged some PMs awhile back. If you need help with anything, please feel free to get in touch with me ok? I live in Xujiahui by the way. Do you have any idea where you'll be staying?

oh wow, I just checked the ticketing website... the venue's really big, at the shanghai stadium. but the tickets are really pricey though. I suggest you buy the closest bleacher seats coz the fans can get crazy - they throw the glowsticks at everyone, even at the artists onstage. A lot of other artists are staging concerts too: Angela Zhang (Guest is Fan Wei Qi), Will Pan and Wang Lee Hom (Guest is David Tao!). I think I can wait for Lee Hom; SHE doesn't seem too appealing :bleh: I also just went to JJ's concert here too.

here's the site for those who are interested: City Ticket (http://www.cityticket.cn/chinese/ycxx.asp?type=2)

Hey hey!!!!! Yes yes, I definitely remembered you ... you were helping me with some shopping tips the last time round. Xujiahui is a nice area but also expensive ... we were viewing some apartments around there such as Grand Gateway, Hui Jin (these are service apartments) and also Oriental Manhattan (got a great gym!).

But the rent may be a bit high for us. I also heard that there are thieves around that area, especially in the subway station. I liked that area a lot coz' it's really convenient.

It's almost like a mini-town by itself. Shopping malls, restaurants and all ... ... We saw another one which is at Changning District.

This one is not service apartment but it's quite well-faciliatated. We like apartments there, even though quieter and not near amenities. Going to be scouting around Gubei area to check out what other places they have there this week.

Any tips for me when house-hunting? I would need them! As for the S.H.E. concert ... well, I doubt I'll go too ... but it's nice to know that Jay will be there.

WLH will be in Shanghai for concert too????!!! When? When?

I would definitely go, let's arrange to go together, kay??? I should be relocating some time in August/September timeframe.

lene
06-20-2006, 03:08 PM
Hey

the service apartments are really expensive here... and you're right, Xujiahui is very convenient, that's why it's pricey. It's our 2nd downtown area here in Shanghai actually :-) There are a lot of good apartments in the area. Fully-furnished 2-bedroom apartments go for around 3,000 RMB up per month.

I've lived in Xujiahui for more than a year and it's quite safe. As for the pickpockets, they're everywhere! Especially when it gets really crowded and busy, more so on weekends. I guess you just have to be careful with your things all the time. But by experience, the thieves here don't take/steal your stuff up front and by force (unlike what they do back home in the Phils.) so I guess it's not so bad...

Oh Changning, near Zhongshan Park right? It's quite near to Xujiahui; just a bus ride away. That area is also quite convenient. As for Gubei, it's our expat town here in Shanghai. The residents are mostly Koreans, Taiwanese and Japanese. It has a Carrefour there and lots of restos and shops. There are a couple of American schools too. The only problem though is it doesn't have a subway stop. The main modes of transpo available are cabs and buses (which can eat up your time).

When house-hunting, I guess the most important thing would be the heaters/aircons. Shanghai weather is terrible! It's too hot during summer and too cold during winter! They say the houses here are also poorly insulated, so during the said seasons our survival depends on our heaters/aircons. Good luck!

Lee hom's concert is scheduled on Aug 12, a Saturday, at the Shanghai Stadium (just one stop from Xujiahui). Just let me know about your plans and such because we may need to buy the tickets in advance.

Cheers!

Whoa!!! That's very good tips you have there. Yeah, I am very careful about the heating system as there is hardly any central heating system in shanghai.

Plus, they don't really have floor heating in the apartments I saw. Xujiahui area is indeed expensive and even though is in our consideration, but traffic may be bad for my boyfriend to travel to work. We prefer the Gubei area where the expats are.

I remembered you study in Jiao Tong University. Do they offer short lessons on Chinese History for example? I am quite keen to learn that.

The place which I was looking at was not so much near Zhongshan Park, more of near Shuicheng Road, which is not too far from Gubei Carrefour. Other than supermarkets, I am also looking out for those markets where they sell fresh vegetables, fish, meat etc. Do you know of any such markets which is suitable for foreigners like us?

Eh .. as for August 12th, I should be in Shanghai or Hong Kong, still not too sure of my schedule. If you're planning to get the tix, do PM me so that I can let you know, hopefully my schedule will be more firmed up by then.

Darkshrimp, I used to stay in Beijing for a while before coming to Shanghai and I still miss and love Beijing a lot. There's a lot of places to shop if you know how to explore. Don't hesitate to ask questions about the place if you need to, alright?

And also, if I'm not wrong, one of our JCnet member, yingyi, is still there. You may like to drop her a PM.

diaoness: Welcome to this thread. I am still currently living in Shanghai. Do you make trips back here?

Yeah, the card thing is very useful. We can use it to take taxi and bus too. This card concept is also being used in Hong Kong and Singapore.

In Hong Kong, we can even use it to take the ferry if I'm not wrong.

09-13-2007, 06:47 AM
Merriana, are you able to converse in mandarin? You can consider calling them or perhaps you can get your classmates to help you out. Some of the other artistes having their concerts around this time are Mayday, Andy Lau, A*Mei, Jacky Cheung, JJ Lin, Sammi Cheng, Linkin' Park, Liang Jing Ru and Rain. That's quite a number in my opinion. Too bad I don't have money to go for all of them. Hahhahaa.

Merriana
09-13-2007, 04:03 PM

i will have one of my classmates to buy it for me...
