There seem to be a lot of questions, many repeating, concerning how to open, convert, or edit certain file types.

This is a work in progress, as I'll add things as I write them, but it should be a helpful guide.

How to use this guide:
If you want to know how to open a certain filetype, read the corresponding information in the File Types section. It will have a list of software that can play it. Links to the software are found in the Players section.

If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask!!! If you see a filetype that isn't listed, and would like help, don't hesitate!

File Types
File types are sorted by "family".

Format is as follows: .fileextension - filetype (player 1, player 2, preferred player) - description

----------------

.RM - Real Media (Real Player, Real Alternative/MPC) - A somewhat outdated form of media. It's lackluster as a means of high-end video, but is perfect for streaming media and low end video. Is popular in Asia, particularly Japan. The Real Media format can be either video, audio, or audio/video.

.RAM - Real Media Streaming (Real Player, Real Alternative/MPC) - RAM's are dummy files. If you want to stream a Real Media file, you generate a RAM for it. The RAM is a very small file, usually around 1-4 kb. It contains some information about the stream, as well as pinpointing the location of the stream. If the stream is pre-recorded, you can download the RAM file, then open it with a text editor to see where the RM is being held.

.RMVB - Real Media Variable Bitrate (Real Player, Real Alternative/MPC) - This is one of the newest, most advanced incarnations of the Real Media format. It *almost* rivals DivX encoding, and is EXTREMELY popular in Asia (in particular, China). In general, it seems RMVB's have less blocking than DivX based codecs, but suffer from a loss of actual clarity and color depth.

----------------

.MP2 - MPEG Audio Stream Layer 2 (WMP, Winamp) - Outdated as hell. Lossy audio format. But it's big brother is good.

.MP3 - MPEG Audio Stream Layer 3 (WMP, Winamp) - Everyone's favorite audio format. The MP3 is actually a bit old, and doesn't provide very much bang for the buck. However, it's widespread, and that's the only thing that sets it apart. Audio encoded at 128kbps is no good. 160 is decent... 192 is even better... 320 is nearly CD-quality audio, but very rare. If you're encoding your own audio, avoid MP3 at all costs.

MP4 - MPEG Video Encoding (WMP, MPC, BSPlayer) - This is actually a video format--not a real file extension. There's no such thing as MP4 audio... or is there?

.MP4 - MPEG-4 Advanced Audio Coding Audio (WMP, Winamp) - Technology pioneered recently that is vastly superior to MP3, but not as popular. Billed as being identical to an uncompressed source at 128kbps (holy crap!), it's supposedly really, really good. It's mainly used in downloaded movies currently.

.MPG/.MPEG - MPEG Video File (WMP, MPC, BSPlayer) - This video format is raw and usually uncompressed, yielding huge file sizes and decent-to-perfect video quality. It is synonymous with the DAT, which is used in VCD's. Never encode in MPG... AVI yields better results.

----------------

.AVI - Audio/Video Interleaved (WMP, MPC, BSPlayer) - The most flexible video type. There are several AVI encoders... from uncompressed (similar to MPG), to DivX (the most popular compresser) and XviD (if you watch anime, it's probably in this).

.DAT - VCD Video (WMP, MPC, BSPlayer) - Nearly identical to MPG in quality and compression. If you play a VCD on your computer, you'll notice that the video is kept in a folder called MPEGAV, and the individual videos are of DAT format.

.WAV - Waveform Audio (WMP, Winamp) - The WAVE is a general uncompressed audio file. It is NOT a lossy format. File size is generally pretty big.

----------------

.OGG - Ogg Vorbis Compressed WAVE (WMP, Winamp) - This is the best audio format out there. Crystal clear sound, especially at 192kbps and above. File size normally is LOWER than MP3 as well. Also, audio encoded at low quality is lightyears beyond MP3.

.OGM - Ogg Vorbis Composite Audio/Video/Text (WMP, MPC, BSPlayer) - This OGM combines audio, video, and text for subtitles into one file. It can hold multiple streams of sound a la MPG, but contain beautiful DivX video. Think of it as a mini-DVD file. Note, however, that it is ONLY a composite file. It may not use Ogg Vorbis encoding.

----------------

.MKV- Matroska Video (WMP, MPC, BSPlayer) - See the description for the OGM format. MKV is widely regarded as an equal of the OGM format.

.MKA- Matroska Audio (WMP, MPC, BSPlayer) - The MKA format does the same for audio as the MKV and OGM do for video.

----------------

.WMV - Windows Media Video (WMP, MPC, BSPlayer) - Both a blessing and a curse. While it provides very beautiful, clear video, and a decent file size to boot, it can hold some nasty surprises. Why? It's from WINDOWS!!! See the section on Digital Rights Management for further info. WMV currently is the only prevalent video type that can make use of DRM.

.WMA - Windows Media Audio (WMP, Winamp) - Another competitor with the MP3 format. It's slightly better than the MP3, but simply does not enjoy the mainstream quality that MP3 does. It's also inferior to the OGG format. However, WMA is the best filetype to encode classical music, like orchestra. The WMA, like the WMV, can be embedded with DRM.

----------------

.MID/.MIDI - Musical Instrument Digital Interface Sequence (WMP, Winamp) - This file format is very unique in that it contains a score, not sound. This digital score contains the actual musical rhythm being played, as well as what instruments should play each note. The file size is very small for that reason. The individual instrument sounds are stored in your soundcard and in Windows. If you have a MIDI, you can generate a score for the piece via Sibelius.

Players

Audio

Windows Media Player Series 9 - (6/10)
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/default.aspx
Included with Windows XP, and possibly the crappiest high-budget player out there. Not only does it chew up system resources, but it is also horrible at rendering video and audio, and actually has *LESS* compatibility with video out there. It's also bulky as hell, and the skins included are horrible.

Winamp 2 - (8/10)
http://www.winamp.com/
Extremely resource light, very skinnable audio player.

Winamp 3 - (7/10)
http://www.winamp.com/
A huge step backwards. Nullsoft added a lot of shit in this player, like a video player. Who the hell watches video on Winamp?

Winamp 5 - (10/10)
http://www.winamp.com/
Best audio player out on the market. It's beautiful. It's more resource heavy than Winamp 2 or 3, but it's still incredible. Offers much better sound quality than WMP.

Video

Windows Media Player Series 9 - (6/10)
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/default.aspx
Included with Windows XP, and possibly the crappiest high-budget player out there. Not only does it chew up system resources, but it is also horrible at rendering video and audio, and actually has *LESS* compatibility with video out there. It's also bulky as hell, and the skins included are horrible.

Apple Quicktime Player - (2/10)
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
It's pretty looking, and that's about it. If you install the Quicktime Player, you'd better watch out if you uninstall it, because if you don't watch out, you could literally cripple your media settings. When you uninstall, Apple asks if you want to remove ALL the features of Quicktime... if you select yes, you could even remove MIDI support from your computer. Nasty, Apple. Earlier versions of the player didn't even give you that choice. USE QUICKTIME ALTERNATIVE INSTEAD!!!!!!!!!

RealPlayer 10 - (4/10)
http://www.real.com/
It's decent, but it's really only good for playing Real Media files. Compatibility is horrible--you may even need to download plugins to play other types of files. However, the only reason it's not rated lower is because it doesn't screw up your computer like Quicktime does. However, it will install some irritating software that keeps giving you "offers". Annoying as hell. USE REAL ALTERNATIVE INSTEAD!!!!!!!!!

Media Player Classic - (9/10)
http://www.divx-digest.com/software/media_player_classic.html
Before Microsoft whored its Windows Media Player series to 7.0, it had a little gem called 6.4. MPC is based upon 6.4, a very efficient and light media player, until Microsoft decided to make it "hip" and add all sorts of useless shit to it. MPC contains all the features of the original, and much more. It also supports two very important modules... Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative! MPC is still a bit lacking, however, for advanced users.

Quicktime Alternative - (10/10)
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/QuickTime_Alternative.htm
You can play Quicktime movies without installing Apple's piece of shit!!! Once installed, you can view Quicktime movies in any video player. However, MPC is highly suggested.

Real Alternative - (10/10)
http://k-litecodecpack.com/
Similar to Quicktime Alternative... a must have!!!
(MacDawn: if the site ask you for subscription, don't sign up for it. Codec are supposed to be freeware, and those who ask you for subscription are probably fraudulent scam site. I tried using the mirror sites, and downloaded the mega version free)
(Scarletwillow: Alternative, use this site: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm
When I posted the first link, it was a different site. Apparently now that site has been either hacked or taken over by another company, but I will leave the link up for future reference.

Mirror site for the k-lite Codec Pack:
http://home.hccnet.nl/h.edskes/mirror.htm
Might I suggest if you want to decode .rm files, then download the K-lite Mega Codec version, because I heard the k-lite full version can't decode .rm files.

BSPlayer - (10/10)
http://www.bsplayer.org/index.php?p=download
Possibly the best all-around player out there. It has high compatibility, a LOT of options, and allows full control over all your codecs. Also very resource-light, though not as light as MPC. Will play nearly all audio and video files, but suggested for video.

Editors and Recorders

Audio

Sound Forge Series (XP, 6, 7) - (10/10)
Supported Filetypes: AIF, VOX, IVC, MPG, MP3, AU, OGG, MOV, RAW, RM, WAV, PCA, W64, DIG, AVI, WMA, WMV (sound editing only, but can encode sound for video files)
http://www.sonicfoundry.com/
This is the Photoshop of sound editing. It's a professional tool, but it costs a pretty penny. Though SF7 is the newest version, it's no different from 6. Sony bought the rights to the software, so they just updated the name (Sonic Foundry Sound Forge --> Sony Sound Forge) and changed a pictures or two and some text. I prefer 6 over 7. This is a very, very expensive piece of software. But... if you're resourceful, ... :shifty:

Sibelius - (9/10)
Supported Filetypes: SIB, MID/MIDI, OPT, MUS, ETF, NIF, TMP, PAG, PGE, S7, TAB, BTAB, CRD
http://www.sibelius.com/
Sibelius is the music composer's program. You can sequence MIDI's, create scores, and all of that stuff. Very easy to use, very professional.

Converters

Audio

Sound Forge Series (XP, 6, 7) - (10/10)
Supported Filetypes: AIF, VOX, IVC, MPG, MP3, AU, OGG, MOV, RAW, RM, WAV, PCA, W64, DIG, AVI, WMA, WMV (sound editing only, but can encode sound for video files)
http://www.sonicfoundry.com/
Will convert most sound formats... check editors/recorders section for review.

Video

Vegas - (10/10)
Supported Filetypes: AIF, AC3, MPG, MP3, OGG, MOV, OGG, RM, WAV, PCA, W64, AVI, WMA, WMV
http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/products/showproduct.asp?PID=914&SPID=263
Made by Sonic Foundry, the same people that made Sound Forge. Sonic Foundry got bought out by Sony though. A superb piece of pro software that allows a lot of editing, but also serves as a full function convertor.

Audio/Video FAQ

Q: Does audio/video quality vary by player?
A: Yes, for some files. DVD's in particular, are affected by the quality of the DVD decoder of the software you're using. Audio is also affected by the media player you use. Winamp tends to deliver a much crisper sound than WMP Video, on the other hand, is rarely affected, since they use shared codecs. However, one player may still interpret video differently from another. For that reason, you might find trouble playing a certain video in one player, but find it flawless in another.

Q: What is DRM, aka Digital Rights Management?
A: A hacker's worst nightmare. Don't get your hopes up if you're not a hacker, because if you download MP3's, download movies, or even have used pirated software, you'd better watch out. DRM technology is currently in the testing stage. But what is it? Basically, programs and files with DRM require you to license your own computer first, then obtain a license for the material you're using in order to avoid abuse. Not that bad? Think again. Here's what they can do with DRM: If you have an MP3 with DRM, they could make it so that you can only play the MP3 twice before it doesn't work anymore. Or, if you transferred the MP3 to someone else, they could make it so that you can't play the MP3 until your friend deletes it from his own hard disk first. Scary, huh? Currently, it's still used with limits. Apple's iTUNES program uses it; if you buy/download a song from their catalog, you cannot edit the MP3 due to its DRM protection. Disney has also bought into the technology and is looking into implementing it into their DVD's.

Q: If I change the file extension, what does that do?
A: Absolutely nothing. File extensions only tell Windows (and other programs) what to use to open it. Changing a filetype will not corrupt your data. For example, if you change rename lovelove.wav to lovelove.mp3, the essential data held inside will not change. But if you use WMP to open WAVE's, and Winamp to open MP3's, Winamp will open the new file by default. Also, if you rename lovelove.wav to something normally unrecognizeable by an A/V program, such as lovelove.jpg, you can still open it with any A/V program.

Q: How do I change what program opens a certain filetype by default?
A: WinXP users: Right-click on the file, select "Open With". Non-WinXP users: Hold Shift and Right-click on the file, select "Open With". Now select the program from the list, or browse to it.

Q: What's the difference between .MID/.MIDI, .MPG/.MPEG, etc?
A: This is an outdated syntax. Three-letter file extensions denote Windows compatibility, and four-letter extensions denote Mac OS compatibility. Back in the day, it actually mattered, but now, file extension naming is just glamour. So no, there is no real difference.

Q: How do I download embedded media files?
A: By embedded, that means the media file is there, but not linked to visually. For example, if you enter a page with background music, and you want the background music, how do you download it? Well, the answer can be both complicated and simple.
Method 1: Right-click the page, then select View Source. Hit CTRL+F to enter the find function. Search for whatever file extension you want. For example, if you go to someone's Xanga and hear a pretty song, and you think it's MP3, you can View Source, do a search in the HTML for "mp3", and you may find the link. Note that on pages with frames, it may be hard to find the frame that the sound is originating from, so you may have to try them all.
Method 2: Use the program Getright (http://www.getright.com/). Once you have it, right-click the page and select "Open with Getright Browser". Getright Browser will now show you all the files the HTML refers to. Download from there.
Method 3: Use the program Getright (http://www.getright.com/). Once you have it, go into the Getright options and set for it to automatically add .MP3 (or whatever you want) files (Tools Menu, Preferences). Restart your browser for it to take effect. Now if you go to the page while Getright is running, if your browser attempts to run a .MP3 (or whatever you want), Getright will download the file instead.

Q: Who or what is MPEG?
A: The Moving Pictures Experts Group. Some very rich corporations that actually decided to work together, including... Dolby, Fraunhofer, AT&T, Sony, and Nokia. But that's just a few.
http://www.mpeg.org/MPEG/companies.html
Obviously, with an alliance like that, they're poised to take over the world.

Thanks for the useful guide sw :)
Here are some other common media filetypes you may want to add:
Matrovska (.mkv), Ogg Media (.ogm), musepack (.mpc), AAC Audio (.mp4), Mpeg2 (.mpg), 3iv (.mov)

Other excellent video players: videolan, zoomplayer
other excellent audio players: itunes, foobar2000 <--IMHO, better than winamp

Other than those I mentioned, I think you've covered the more common ones, good job! I especially like your description of each one :)

Thanks Raerei and QB...

I corrected some stuff (thanks QB), added some stuff.
I'll add VideoLan later.
I left it out in particular due to my opinion that MPC is, in most respects, superior to it.
I judged the programs based on several criteria...
1. Spyware
2. Adware
3. Ads
4. Plug-ins
5. System Load
6. Interface
7. Compatibility
8. Skins

One of the reasons I didn't include ITunes is that it's not a dedicated music player... therefor, it chews up a lot of unnecessary RAM and system resources. I also consider Winamp to be the best music player because it supports a wide range of plugins... for example, the DFX plugin, which makes your music *really really good* :P Good DSP functionality is the best part of Winamp ^_^

JianDan[Ai]

ITunes is only good for ripping songs of cds =]

Excellent guide. I agree with QB you should add those other file types sometime, but there is no rush. Those are no where as common as mp3, wma, midi and stuff like that. DOnt forget converters, I'm sure lots of people want to know what and how to use that kinda stuff.

Let me know if you want a hand in writing up anything. ~_^

If you have winamp there are plugins that let you write whatever's playing in some format. After you install them they'll be in plugins/output.

Hi, Thanks Scarlet Willow for the helpful info.. I have one question about AIFF files? I currently downloaded Sound Studio to record my songs..but I'm not sure how I can convert my AIFF file to MP3? I tried using a converter..but it doesn't seem to work? Could it be perhaps I'm still trialing the software? Anyone if you can answer my question, that would be great help!! THANKS IN ADVANCE!

JianDan[Ai]

I dont think so Lattae, you would need to convert them first. I have a program that can convert rm files to a vcd format, (although in my experience its not always succesful =/ ) and I recoommend sing tmnpeg ( i think thats what it is) to convert your wmv into a vcd burnable format....I can give you more details when I get back on my own computer ^^;;;

um, net transport (if i remember correctly) just basically lets you download mms:// files which you cant download using normal means. I personally use Hi-Net recorder since I think its more convient. The reason is because Net transport is a download client, so it basically takes over all your downloading operations, and I found that rather irritiating. Hi Net recorder on the other hand is a separate program that can record a mms:// file when u put in the URL. It can also play files as well...and is in general pretty stable.

Pin jie: I've got Unlead DVD Moviefactory on my computer and it burns .wmv files onto VCDs but not .rmvb, it came with my computer though, so I'm not sure if it's able to be downloaded off the web.
Like JDA said, you would have to convert rmvb/rm files. I always use EO Video, as you can uninstall and reinstall when it expires.

I have a question, how do you encode subtitles into movies. I know you can use virtualdub and do it that way, but whenever i encode the movie it end up being around 80 gigs.... *sigh* is there a different way to encode it, or anyway to make the file... a lot smaller?

thanks

i just noticed this today and it's probably too late. i'll answer it anyway...

i haven't tried this before, but i think you can use Goldwave (http://www.goldwave.com) to open up the audio file you wanna insert into your powerpoint presentation, and then adjust the arrows on either end of the clip until you narrow it down to the section you want (e.g. the chorus). then you can go to File > Save Selection As... to save your chorus clip.

after that in powerpoint, go to Insert > Movies and Sounds to locate the chorus clip. then you are prompted whether you want to have the file play automatically or not. if not, you'll see an icon where you can click for the file to play.

if you're doing the presentation at school, you'll probably need to save your presentation on a CD since the chorus clip probably won't fit on a floppy disk. i'd suggest that you save your powerpoint presentation AND sound file in the same folder on your hard drive before transferring to CD. this is because the icon for clicking on the file acts as a shortcut to the clip and if you don't have the presentation and clip in the same folder/directory, then the shortcut won't work. if you're just bringing your own laptop to school, then you don't have to worry about it.

Gosh, sorry Smonks baby, but this might be too late X_X

What sort of subtitles do you want?
You can get different effects with different types.

The biggest choice is going internal or external.

Internal is actually encoded into the VIDEO. I suppose that's what you were trying to do. In that case, if it ends up too big, make sure you select the encoding type and make it DIVX or another good AVI format.

External is more popular, and is definitely the choice you need to go if you're thinking about distributing a file, for example (people will get mad if you use internal subs). There are two main choices you have; either SMIL or SRT (or, if you have DVD image subs, you'll have to use the SUB format). SMIL runs on the Realplayer subbing engine, I think. SRT is fairly basic, and is the easiest to program. Simply create a text file, open it, and edit using the following format. This is the first three lines of the Jiang Hu movie sub.
1
00:00:19,602 --> 00:00:20,933
Why do you want to be a boss?

2
00:00:22,939 --> 00:00:24,600
I really don't know

3
00:00:38,988 --> 00:00:41,684
You'll just get yourself killed!
Leave me alone!
SMIL allows for color, font, positioning, and all that but it's pretty much accepted to be too much work.
SUBS are what your DVD actually uses. Since DVD players don't want to have font problems, subs are converted into images. Very inflexible.

Average file sizes for sub types on a 90 minute movie:
SMIL, 200 kb
SRT, 50 kb
SUB, 10 mb

Note that the SUB format may even slow down some people's computers.

I don't think Windows Media player has the ability to play external subs, but all the 3rd party video players I listed in my original post in this thread can play them :)

Well, what you downloaded are the raw scenes from a DVD.
You'll probably have to burn them onto a real DVD to see them, or somehow emulate it.

I'm not sure, but you can try this:
http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/portal/download.php

Get Daemon Tools, install it, run it. Click the icon (it's in your system tray) and mount an image: Jay_2004_DVD_SCN.MDS, and see what happens. I don't think it'll do anything, but you can try = /

At least, that's what happened to me in the past before. Oo DVDs when extracted usually come in .VOB files. .IFO files are the subtitles. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here.)

I think you're pretty right.
I myself have never done it, but it sounds pretty correct to me... just cuz ^_^

If you rip stuff from DVD's, it's advisable to re-encode it in a smaller file type, like AVI.

Mmmkay! If you ever decide you want to rip DVDs and whatnot, http://www.videohelp.com is a pretty good resource. They have a conversion page that provides tutorials depending on what you want to covert to (AVI -> MPG, MPG -> VCD, DVD -> AVI to name a few). This also includes tutorials for specific programs, so you have the option of working with the programs that are most comfortable for you. It's great for people like me who hate downloading new programs. XD~

Oh wow. That's a brillant list you have there ! :bows:

A lot of files on this site uses Real player but you need to put in your credit card to download it. Grrr. Even the Real Alternative at the site you provided asked for credit card details.

Aww haha Ene, you're falling into their trap :)

RealPlayer is free, but they sorta hide the link to the free version.
I don't suggest using RealPlayer, but if you'd like to...
1. www.real.com
2. click the big yellow "Download RealPlayer" button
3. on the RIGHT SIDE OF THE PAGE, click "Download Free RealPlayer" in blue.

That's the free version.

I'd suggest using Media Player Classic and Real Alternative though.
Those are MUCH better, since RealPlayer is bundled with all sorts of spyware-like software.

Download these:
Media Player Classic
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/guliverkli/mpc2kxp6482.zip?download

Real Alternative 1.29

is it possible to convert a .asx audio file to mp3 format?
You can do this in Goldwave, but it involves a number of steps. You would first have to convert the .asx file into a .wav file. Here's how you'd go about doing it.

First, start Goldwave and then drag the .asx file into the program. You should see a "Deflashing" message as Goldwave processes the file.

Once you're done, save the entire clip as a .wav file. You may then convert this .wav file into a .mp3 file. The .wav file takes up a fair bit of space, but the good news is that you may delete it after you have obtained your .mp3 file.

Hope that helps!! :D

Hm...I do not know if this question has been asked before:

Is there any ways to transfer a video from a VCD to RM or MPG format? What program should I use?

Thanks~!!! =)

lepencil
03-03-2005, 01:39 PM
A video clip taken from a VCD is technically (but not entirely) a MPG/MPEG file already. You could simply browse to the contents of the MPEGAV folder on your CD, copy the desired clip to your computer and then rename it to a .MPG extension.

It isn't entirely a MPEG file because there are additional headers in the clip to enable it to be played as a VCD in stand-alone VCD/DVD players.

To convert the clip to RM, you'd need to get RealProducer Basic (it's free and you don't need to pay in order to use it, by the way).
http://forms.real.com/rnforms/products/tools/producerbasic/index.html

Complete the form found in the above link, then download and install the program.

Once you're done, copy the required clip from your VCD to your hard disk, rename it to .MPG first, then run RealProducer Basic.

You'll then see the main working screen. Firstly, [Browse...] for the "Input file". You may choose the desired output quality (i.e. the encoded quality) by clicking on the [Audiences] button. Delete the 3 default rates/qualities you see, and then select at least a "256k DSL or Cable" rate/quality for a decent encoded file. Click on the [->] arrow to add the rate for this particular audience, then uncheck the "2-pass video encoding (file to file only)" option, if it is already checked. Click on the [x] to go back to the main working screen.

You should be ready to start encoding, so click on that button to start it. It might take some time, depending on the length of your clip, so you might want to go do something else first and then check back on it later. Hope that helps.

i have a couple of questions...

i think it's been asked in this thread before, but hasn't been answered... is there a good program to convert .rm and .rmvb files into something more "friendly" such as .wmv or .mpg? i googled around and found WinAVI Video Converter and Ultra RM Converter. but i don't know if it's just my computer... things seem to progress slowly even for a small clip (~10MB) that i was testing out. :? i'm hoping to convert .rmvb files of around 150MB to .wmv format.

also, does anyone know how subtitles work for .rmvb files? i found something about SMIL, but that looks complicated. i've only seen hard-subbed clips in .rmvb before, is there a way to do subs externally? and in general, what's a good program to use to create subs? i've heard of a few and would appreciate some suggestions. i've only tried Subtitle Workshop so far and that seems pretty good.

anywho... basically, i have these .rmvb files that i'd like to provide english subtitles for. so, either 1) i find something to convert these files into .wmv or non real media format, and proceed to do subs that way; or 2) i find a way to do the subs internally/externally to the .rmvb files.

any help would be appreciated. :D thanks in advance!!

scarletwillow
06-14-2005, 09:11 AM
I've done work with SMIL before, and it's actually not that bad. It follows a very basic timestart-timestop format and uses HTML style font formatting.

Alternatively, you can use .RT for Real Media subs, RT being Real Text, SMIL's little brother, which is the bare bones version of subs without text formatting (and is closest to other sub formats).

On conversion--no, it's not just your computer. Video encoding is an EXTREMELY lengthy process. EXTREMELY. Best done overnight... or... overweekends =P

I was trying to re-download a few stuff, and I found out that the Real alternative K-lite codec pack, well, they are free and the site that asked for subscription.....

-MacDawn

Edit: Thought the k-lite link I went to sounded kind of fishy, because every link I clicked on on that page led me to the member subscription page. There was no decription of what I might be even paying subscription for.

So I google for k-lite and found a few sites you can download from, and one of them actually stated that the Codec are freeware and sites that are asking for subscriptions might be fraudulent sites.

I had downloaded the k-lite Mega Codec Pack 1.38 version, for free and installed the file (better to test it first, just in case). So far, the file seemed okay. So I edited the first page to include the site from which I had downloaded the file from.

Oh these are very high quality files. TIFF for example is uncompressed, and cannot be opened by normal methods. Photoshop should be able to open these however. i use this program called IrfanView to convert/rename pics in batches. maybe you can give it a try.

go to File > Batch Conversion/Rename..., then on the upper right-hand side, select the folder where you've saved the pics. (you managed to save the pics from those Word documents, right?) and on the left panel, you can select Add for individual pics you want to click on to add to your list of to-be-converted files. (click on Add for each pic you want to add to the list.) or if it's the whole folder, you can click on Add all. then back on the right side, you can select the file type under the drop-down menu "Files of type". for TIFF files, scroll down to TIF - Tagged Image File Format.

for "Output directory", that's where you can choose where the converted files will go. so, you can create a new folder or something to save the converted files in. that way, your originals won't be replaced if anything happens to go wrong. under "Work as", select Batch conversion. under "Batch conversion settings", select your "Output format" from the drop-down menu, meaning what do you want the files to be converted to... JPG - JPEG Format will probably be best. when you're done with all your settings, click on the Start button on the left panel and the conversion will begin. it'll let you know when the conversion is done and you can check the folder where you saved the converted files to for the new files.

if any part's unclear, lemme know and i'll try to help. :D

I need to find out is there any good freeware program that allows us to cut up video files (especially for rmvb formats)? For example, there are some Jay interview clips which might not be the whole program, only 30 minutes, and sometimes, it's a bit senseless to upload the whole 1 hour program when it's just 30 minutes.

Hey cacky, I just downloaded this software called Advanced X Video Converter. It can convert and split a range of video formats like AVI/MPEG-1/MPEG-2/RM/RMVB/WMV etc and it's easy to use. But the downside is that the trial version only lasts for 25 days.

There are other free software out there but they leave watermarks on the output file. I'm still on the lookout so maybe you could try the one I mentioned above if you need to split a file right now.

Nero Express burner converts most files to VCD format just before burning them; however it does not covert Real media files! I’ve just purchased a program called WinAviVideo converter, latest edition; it’s fantastic. This program converts almost everything to anything:
http://www.winavi.com/en/video-converter/new.htm
http://www.winavi.com/en/download/download.htm

Have a quick read. Hope it helps.

Gosh sorry for the late response pianochic250, the size of the forum still leaves me somewhat head-spun!

Yes WinAviVideo converter does convert real media files; it’s so cool I’m unhealthily addicted to it. (Did I just say cool? *gasps*) you can convert real media files to VCD/mpeg which can then be burned onto cd via Nero burner which you can then watch on your DVD player *deep breath*…

Does anyone know a good program that I can compress .mov files? I have these files that's like 56mb and it's only 12 second duration. I heard I can do it in Quicktime Pro (since Quicktime deals with .mov files) but I don't have it since it costs ~$38 to upgrade to Pro. If you know other alternatives, please let me know. It'll be greatly appreciated!

Does any one know of a good program or software that can convert .rmvb files to other files that can be played on the DVD. Or maybe .wmv or .mpeg?

I've searched through the internet, but I can't seem to find a converter that doesn't leave a watermark.

Thanks in advance.

You can use Imtoo MPEg Encoder (but you need to pay for it) or use this free software called Super. Here is the link:-

I've been having this problem. Any file with the rmvb extension doesn't work well when I play it. It is very lagging and the picture and sound doesn't match. I've already downloaded the separate real alternative and quicktime codecs but it's still like that. Anyone has any idea how to solve this?

hi, i've got a similar question to cacky's a couple of posts back....

Does anyone know of any video editors that can split .asf or .wmv files?
(ideally something as idiot proof as the real editor that was recommended)

Problem that I have is that some of the k-drama episodes i downloaded have this short snippet of advert before it starts, so it throws the subtitle files that i downloaded completely out of sync.

So all I need to do is to splice away that 10 seconds right at the start....

i tried using the X Video Converter program recommended - but somehow it stalls after 5% conversion.

i found this other program EZVideoSplicer and it seemed like what I was looking for, however, somehow it cuts my files off midway - ie. a 60 min clip becomes like 35 mins only.
But the first 10 seconds do get chopped off.

Any other suggestions?

Hi, I've been trying to watermark my videos using VirtualDubMod and followed the instructions on videohelp, but when I slide the opacity level to 50% as suggested, it just leaves a pale whitewash over the video, am I doing something wrong? or does anyone know of another program that adds watermarks to videos? I've also tried VidLogo but the free version has their own watermark on it.

I used Windows Paint to create the watermark which leaves a rectangle around the text, is there a better way to create the text watermark without boxes? It's really frustrating, I'm gonna go blind if I keep staring at the screen! Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you.

rochy, isn't it easier to just resync your subtitles to match the vid? that cuts down on a lot of work at your end. players like BS Player, GOM Player, and even using Vobsub with Windows Media Player allows you to adjust the timing of subs. just thought that might be the more long-term and convenient solution if it's just for subs.

anyway, i use VirtualDub to split .avi files. not sure if it works for .asf/.wmv as well. i can check if you're interested.

oh, and for the subtitles, you can adjust the timing of the actual subtitles file (.srt) with a program like Subtitle Workshop or other subtitle-creating software. :-)

Download free video converter...
Total Video Converter 2.6…

“Total Video Converter is a total solution for video conversion which supports reading, playing lots of video and audio formats and converting them to popular video formats. Total Video Converter includes a powerful media conversion engine internally so that you can convert media files with very fast speed.”

I just came across this program which was recommended to me by a friend who actually purchased a very similar program! She ‘said’ that this video converter works very similar to WinAviVideo converter which is a fabulous video conversion program that converts files from wmv to mpeg to avi to real media player as well as mp3 and so on. It also splits files so a real handy program plus it’s free & can be downloaded from here:
http://www.effectmatrix.com/total-video-converter/index.htm

So yep, it’s recommended for anyone who wants to burn files onto DVD or VCD!

Hope you guys find it useful…

no, all of the functions are provided.
you need to open the song, play it and sing along but record in a SEPARATE FILE so that you can blend the two files (one with music one without) together.

Well..I need to put Jay's MV in to my handphone. And i'm sure that the type of file is .3gp and I just cant find any video converter to convert this file. I have try Stoik Video Converter but you need to buy the activation key in order to convert .3gp file type.
So I just wanna ask if there is any free software or even Trail software(temporary) for me to use. I wanted to put Jay's MV in to my phone.

by watermark.. do you mean you want to encode a logo into the video... and also... you want to have subtitles on it?

If that's the case... you should use VirtualDub/VirtualDubMod for this job!
Check out this guide on how to put subs into a video file =>
How to add permanent subtitle to a video with virtualdubmod (http://forum.videohelp.com/topic272736.html)

you can add the watermark/logo with the logo filter in virtualdub/virtualdubmod which should be already included in the program ;)

good luck with that :D

i just tried to use virtualDubMod + VobSub.. :sadangel:

i'm confused...

by watermark, i mean like..credits..
u know..i have these videos and i want to put my name on it..

==========================================
i tried Ulead Video too yesterday..i managed to add watermark (credits), it works..but in the middle of the video, it's like repeating (like a broken tape) and then no sound 'til end..

not just for 1 particular video, but to all videos..

anyone knows what's wrong?

you need to make an .ass file (which includes your credits) with Aegisub (http://www.videohelp.com/tools/aegisub) first.. than just use the "TextSub" filter in VirtualDub/VirtualDubMod and save the file as AVI!

Depending on what while you want to encode it in... for .avi simply use the XviD codec with Lame MP3 for audio!

I never liked codec packs. Maybe it's because I don't tweak them or don't understand them, but I find a lot of the stuff unnecessary (most force me to use MPC).

I do like the Shark007 codec pack. It installs what it needs into Windows without Media Player Classic (I recall). I used it for 64-bit Vista and it was pretty good. Made Windows Media Player quite useful and powerful.

If you're not a fan of codecs, there's VLC, Kmplayer, Mplayer, GOM, and a bunch of other one-program wonders.

Sorry, I have no idea since I have not encountered problems with the codec pack before.

Did you try and play other videos and see if it works? And maybe look around the codec or the media player settings and see if there is anything unusual? Or else you can try other media players like what orangeman mentioned.

yeh ive tried other videos and they don't play either.. then i realised that they wouldn't play because they were MPEG-4 files and none of the players i have play them which is really strange because they used to play fine.. and now my .avi ones don't play.. hmm how i love computers so much =\

yeh.. i'll try the ones that orangeman suggested..

I think i've encountered same problem when i installed K-Lite basic on my office laptop recently, it worked fine on my other laptop. What I did, i uninstall it, and re-install the mega version instead. I works perfect :D. You can try if you want, the size is bigger (i think). But I especially prefer it since i really like WMP Classic (HomeCinema) that can play just everything under the sun (hehe)
