<Singer Avril Lavigne meets Chretien, then samples Speaker's chair in Commons>
It's a long way from Napanee, Ont., to the top of the charts so a brief stopover in the prime minister's office isn't about to make Avril Lavigne break out in a cold sweat.
Lavigne shrugged Saturday when asked if she felt nervous to be standing next to Prime Minister Jean Chretien in the most powerful office in the country. "I am," Chretien deadpanned. A day before the Juno Awards - where she's a nominee in six categories - the 18-year-old pop star was already a winner, accepting a diamond award from her record company, BMG, for selling over one-million copies of her debut CD, Let Go.
Chretien presented the award to Lavigne, who had her family in tow for the occasion.
Chretien said Lavigne is a great example of a Canadian who has mastered her field.
Chretien, accompanied by wife Aline, one of their grandchildren and a teenage friend, spoke briefly with Lavigne, who appeared to take the event in stride.
Chretien said money invested in Canadian music is cash well-spent and he pointed to Lavigne, Alanis Morissette, Celine Dion, Shania Twain and others as examples of how Canadians can make it to the top of their professions.
Twain plays host to Sunday night's Juno Awards at the Corel Centre (8 p.m. EST, CTV)
Chretien said he likes Lavigne's songs Sk8er Boi and Complicated and joked that he and Lavigne share something in common.
"I read about her that she was very complicated at school," the prime minister joked. "And I was very complicated at school, too. You know, I was telling her I was kicked out of three colleges."
Dressed casually in a blue Boy Scouts of America shirt and sporting her trademark bracelets and red, white and blue wristbands, Lavigne also visited the House of Commons, where she posed for pictures while sitting in the Speaker's chair.
Lavigne is the 13th recipient of a BMG diamond award, joining, among others, the Backstreet Boys, Twain and Bryan Adams who have sold a million units of one CD in Canada.
--------
Is she that popular that the Prime Minister must acknowledge her? Maybe cuz she's Canadian....anyways, I guess she's just one lucky gal, getting a pic with the Prime Minister. This news article will just increase her popularity and give her career another boost. -Jingle
* would you just look at her in that second pic!!!!!!!!!!!! :( :(

i cant belive that Prime Minister Jean Chretien would even listen to the crap that avril sings.
i admit i like her spunky attitude(a bit) but its becomming redundant and boring.
JINGLE- i feel your pain.

IMO, her spunky attitude is fake and manufactured, she is quite simply a popstar and therefore, her star will fade very quickly.

I think she's fading already. Her voice is probably perfected by technology and sound machines for her CD because... have you heard her live?!

yeah, shes pretty horrible live. i dont like her music in general and she is somewhat pop, no matter how much she says she is punkish.
she may be fake and manufactured...
to me she's pure and happy...shes like the totally opposite of me...i think thats so cool...
she's talented too...i heard Losing Grip on MTV and went out and bought her CD
plus...she's hot :p

I think much of her singing is manufactured. Her style too seems so fake. She is portrayed as a skater-punk-singer. I remember before she rebonded her hair and when her record company packaged her, she gained little regconition. Maybe she had no talent. Anyway, her songs Sk8ter BoI, I'm with You n Complicated are not bad, all thanks to high technology to polish her voice. She is one of those one night fame stars that slowly fades away.

i think her songs are way too overplayed like "complicated and sk8terboi" i mean we've all heard it like half a billion times..i don't think she deserves that honor cos she seriously DOES sing like crap live! like at the mtv vmas last year! ARGH! her cd is good like the first couple of times you listen to it, and then it's like you realize that she's not this punk girl that she was made to be. she's a fake and her cd is getting her no where.

lol, yah, her live singing is horrendous! I couldn't believe how she sounded live, i'm not an Avril hater, i bought her cd too, which was the last english cd i bought in such a long time, i liked her songs, and she writes her own lyrics, i liked her fun attitude too at the begining, but now, i also think its getting a bit old...but anyhow, i don't really have too much to comment on her, i think she's alright, not the best, but i'll leave it at that.

her songs aren't bad or anything for a pop-star, and its not like i'll shut off tha radio when i hear her, but to me, she's a sell-out, which may not be her fault but the fault of her company... she seems like a pop-star whos trying to be punk-ish to get the attention of the "rebels" of our generation... but it turns out she's just another regular pop star. kindda like good charlotte and blink 182. nothing against they're music...but TOTAL punk-band sell-outs...

i was shocked when i saw it in the news too. i think she has talent, but she doesn't deserve all the attention she's getting!

i totally feel the same way.....she is getting so much attention...and just look at that crazy face she's making beside the Prime Minister, I mean, who does she think she is?!
Do you think that Jay will be proud of her when he sees this report, since it is in the Chinese newspapers as of today. Since Jay likes her style of music and it's gotten her this far now....... :-x

i think it's mainly because canada doesn't produce that many artists that go international, and especially as fast as avril, so that's why they tend to make a big deal over it whenever that opportunity does come up

hey peeps-i know ppl are entitled to their own opinions esp when it comes to music-but cut avril some slack, she's not THAT bad! i think she's better then quite a lot of the other manufactured stuff out there! plus she hasn't been in the industry for very long so of course her live performances won't be that up to scratch. singers do (well some...) improve with experience! :singer:
I brought her album too and really liked it! 'complicated' is a cool song! :headphones:

I have no respect for anyone that can't sing live. Plus, I also thought it was quite hypocritical of her to diss Britney when I do not seem to see her displaying that much talent herself. Granted, she seems to have a more refreshing image, but how far can it take her without any real talent?
Anyway, the Canadian PM probably wants to use her as a PR tool. To attract the votes of the younger generation by showing that they are with "it". Well, guess both sides will profit from the publicity. It's much better then giving the award to Celine Dion definately
don't dismiss all her talent and all she earned with a simple "i think she's fake" or "canada doesn't produce many artists that go international" without any backup for your argument...
i mean...how would you feel if someone dissed Jay like that? just cuz her music doesn't fit into your category doesn't mean she deserves to be demoralized and her efforts neglected...
sorry if i sound mean but i mean...she just came out...give her a chance and some time to grow...
plus she hasn't been in the industry for very long so of course her live performances won't be that up to scratch. singers do (well some...) improve with experience!
agreed. the first time i went to Jay's concert i actually thought he sang horribly live...but then i took into consideration that he has already done concert runs before that one and he's suffering from fatigue...overall i was really happy with the concert
a lot of artists are like that really...no one has a perfect voice...or a voice that suits everyone

her music is to trendy. It's nothing unique like Jay's... if she had talent like him i would like her too. But her songs sound like regular rock songs and has no taste to them.
I like a few or her songs but i wouldn't recommend them to anyone because they sound plain...

Jo:
Don't be too upset, I get your point.
I do admit that I'm have been rather judgemental, considering that I've only seen her at the Grammy's and MTV Asia award ceremony. Her live performances for both events, sadly, were not up to standard. She does seem have alot of negative publicity lately, which is partly responsible for my dislike of her.
But there's no fire w/o smoke. It's plain to see that she frequently contradicts herself in her interviews. She's not being the perfect role model either with her constant cussing and atrocious behaviour. How is that different from the artistes she so often disses? And how would the fans of the artistes she so often criticizes feel? Much like you when we are criticizing her?
We might be wrong to dismiss how far she came today, but that's simply because she hasn't shown us what she's capable of yet. When she shows real talent, that's when I shall give her due respect. Till then, I shall simply do nothing but wait.
i understand that she does contradict herself..but that would be an attitude problem
so instead of saying that she lacks talent, which she doesn't, as she writes her own songs...you can instead say you don't like her because she has a bad attitude...
anyways...sorry if i sounded angry...because i was...a bit

Jo:
Well, I'd be damned. Jo, you do have a right to be mad.
I didn't know she wrote her own songs. That takes talent.
The above post shall stay on to serve as a momento of my judgemental nature as punishment. And teach me to get my facts straight first before posting anything.
*shamedfaced*
I do take back my irresponsible comments. But that doesn't mean I will like her music or image. That's my point of view, and I am not forcing my views onto anyone. Hope you understand.
cici bebe
04-09-2003, 06:15 AM
Personally, I don't think her own songs (lyric-wise) are hard to write. Such as "Why should I care? I was scared and you weren't there. I was so alone!" If she composed her own music (not sure about this one, does she?) then I would be more impressed.
Jo you have good points but I guess you just can't force them on those who still think she has no talent. Maybe they define talent differently.
yes, she does compose her own music
and Satanrina...i appreciate that you voiced your opinion and are big enough to admit fault
cici i'm not forcing anyone to realize her talent, i'm just stating facts that she composes/writes her own music just like Jay, and appeal to certain people just like Jay...she may not be as talented, but her talent as a musician shouldn't be denied without proper backup of such a criticism
and i understand you don't like her music Satanrina...that's perfectly fine...people all have different taste..that's a totally different thing

avril lavigne was pretty popular when her first single came out. i never really liked her. she's too rude. she's pretty. her songs... i don't really like. her sound reminds me of alanis morisette (anyone remember her from like, 5 years ago?). the hype for her kinda died down since she first came out.

04-21-2003, 04:20 AM
Ack. Avril Lavigne is over rated. She's one of the many supposedly "original" new artists who write their own songs and compose their own music. I think she's a product made by producers who have noticed a trend of female rock artists who compose their own music like Michelle Branch and Vanessa Carlton.
I watched her perform a live performance on TV when I was watching the Grammy's and her voice was AWFUL. It's a real sign that she can't sing, and therefore, does not deserve to be in the music business. I mean, who cares if you can sing in the studios? People could make anyone sound good in a studio. It's the live performances that really showcase a person's talent.
In conclusion, Avril sucks and it's pointless that she is even acknowledged at all.

I think Avril has talent as a song writer and singer, but I think she tries to hard to be 'punk'. Like when Justin Timberlake said that he hoped to go on tour with her, she totally blew him off...I mean i understand he's like a pop icon, but would her 'punkness' be any less if she was seeing on tour with Justin? I dont think she should blow people off without knowing them first.
well Justin Timberlake isn't really that much of a sweety himself either...in fact...i've grown to despise him
there is some truth to what you said...En-en...that she should be a songwriter/producer, or a composer...
she shouldn't be a singer...but at least she has talent...a lot of people don't have the voice, the talent OR looks and just makes money because they were in the wrong place at the right time

i agree that she does seem to have a bad attitude... i don't like stuck up snobs at all!
she was very popular when she first came out with that single (don't remember the name)... i was into that song at the beginning... but after a while of constant broadcasting of that song, it started to annoy me.
i've watched her perform live a couple of times and she sounded okay... didn't watch her at the grammy's so i don't know how she did there.
um, justin timberlake? don't get me started on him...

 well, she started out kinda like a bang, but later every1 finds out that she's a POSER, as ANTI-britney. She even said she's not punk. If u ask her what she listen when she was younger, it'll take her awhile to think of one. omg, have u heard her sing live,it sounds like she was sick or something, even her backup singer sing better.

i've heard all the she-totally-rocks-i-dig-her-attitude and that-girl-sucks-she-thinks-shes-so-cool-and-spunky stuff about her and i must say, i think neither sides. i don't ADORE her and neither do i DETEST her to the core or whatsoever. her music direction is...okay (so-so) and she has her own attitude. good for her as long as she doesn't go overboard and the whole thing will become too fake for comfort.

sry 2 all her fans out there....but i find her very annoying...she is like 18 or something? but 2 me she acts like a 14 little punk rebelling against her parents...she sounds like she is whinning .....i personally find her music and her image very annoying....ppl say she better than britney spears or christina aguliera because she at leasts covers her body up and doesn have her ass sagging out of her pants...but i still dun like ANY of them =P ...heh dun take it personally if u like her...shez jus not my style...

Yea I think she is that popular...she's sold tons of albums all around the world. She has also received awards for her music. In my opinion, people like her cos she's still young, tomboy and she sings kind of pop/alternative songs which are nice and easy to listen to. I quite like her too, I think she has got her own style, although she rarely smiles in public...but that's fine by me, she sings alright and she's got some talents (since she writes her songs herself :wink2: )
she was great at first but now her punk shit is kinda getting annoying...shes EVERYWHERE!! and her songs are so overplayed on the radio..but i saw a pic of avril and jay together and i got disgusted...i mean..ew! my friend was so sure that it was edited by paint or something but i doubt it since he was holding her cd....

I don't really care if ppl don't like her style, her songs, or even her voice, I think she totally rocks!!!!! :) Her music just fab. I bought her cd while I was on vacation, I would've bought it early if I new how much I like the other songs that didn't have mvs 4!!!! I also think her punkish style is kool n her voice sounds okay. :wink2: She sold like lots of cds n her songs were on the top ten countdown list 4 2002!!!! I think complicated was 5, that's pretty good. She's my favourite gurl singer. O.K. I'll get to the point she's totally hip n I don't think she fade until a long time, I hope she'll keep making awesome songs!!!!!!!!!!! Rock on avril

she's definitely all over the radio because it seems they play her song once an hour. i was in guitar class the other day and this older guy that is in my class actually took his girl to see avril lavigne and he actually said she was pretty awesome. i was surprised. he praised her for playing the piano and drums in addition to guitar.

i think when she first came out with complicated many ppl liked her cuz they thought she was differnet like doing her own thing and for awhile songs like complicated and sk8ter boi were always on MTV, the radio, etc however i thought she was slowly fading away until she came out with Don't tell me then i think she got popular again and now i hear her songs on the radio quite often again. personally i think she's alrite but i don;t like her that much...i did like some of her songs but they get a little annoying when u;ve heard them for about 50 times...

yea Avril isn't that popular but i do think that some of her songs are pretty good. everybody dislikes her because they think she is being a poser and she is trying to be punk but she is singing pop music. yea whatever. i really don't care as long as the music is good, then its all good. the only time she was really popular was back in 2002 when she came out with Complicated. that was a good song while it lasted but i think that alot of her songs get overplayed on the radios and then everybody gets annoyed with her. but overall i think that her songs are quite good, i you guys have heard Breakaway from the Princess Diaries 2, its sung by Kelly Clarkson but it was written by avril. she has alot of talent.

She's actually not that bad, but it really sucks how most people dislike artists because of their songs getting overplayed on the radio :\ It's not like they have any control over that :| Not really fair really...
i bought her first cd, thought she was different and stuff, but i didnt like her anymore when she sang live at one of the awards.... i think they hired the ppl up front to jump up and down.....some ppl sing really nice on the cds but not in real person....i dont really think shes THAT popluar after ppl thought she's a poser now.......

Hmm I can't say whether she's popular or not.. but actually I am really starting to like her more and more.. coz in the beginning she was saying how she's a skater and that her music is punk and all that... and I guess everybody goes through that maturing phrase and I definitely have to say that in her latest cd, Under My Skin.. she has changed a lot and is definitely becoming her own self... and I actually really like her songs too.. especially My Happy Ending, Nobody's Home and Don't Tell Me. I heard that she refuses to not sing live.. and that she sounds great in her concerts.

I think that if everyone is tired of listening to Avril's songs because they are played all the time on the radio, this should answer to the question: Is Avril Lavigne THAT popular?. She IS popular; otherwise her songs wouldn't be played so constantly by the radios right?
Liking or disliking her is another issue to be discussed. I really liked her first album especially her song Complicated, but i didn't really like her attitude. I thought she was kind of fake. But, it was fine, as long as she could made good music. I thought that she sucked singing live. She really sucked. But now, with her second album Under My Skin i realized she has changed. She has become more mature and her songs still sound good! :) And now, she sounds 100 times better singing live than before. How did I realize that? well, I went to one of the Avril & by surprise concerts she held at the beginning of this year. She was promoting her 2nd album that it was coming soon in that time . She sang pretty well and i liked it very much ^_^.

She is THAT popular. Maybe because of her style and her music. Its like something new to the music industry. She is so much different from pop queens like Britney, Christina, Jessica or MAndy. That's what so unique about her. PLus, i gueesed her songs did express out youth's feeling.

Well, She is popular. The lyrics are very meaningful, the music is different and people can identify it easily that it's Her music. And i do agree that she'll be the driving force for quite some time...

funny thing is i nvr heard of tis prime minister thingie b4..hehe
her attidude...i tink she has a vry rebellious n fun attidude....yeah i'm like dat too :bleh:
i kinda feel bad for her on da Let Go album.if u listen to Under My Skin,da songs r less popish......Avril wanted all her songs in Let Go to be sumthin like Losing Grip,Unwanted, stuff like dat...but unfornatey, her recordin company wuden allow her to do dat....so sad
but ofcuz u hope u guys will giv Avril a second chance n listen 2 her songs....if i din gave Jay a second chance,i wuden be here in da 1st place

What? Avril Lavigne in a comic book?!?
That's a great idea but unfortunately, I think the character drawing doesn't look like her. :glug:
And her new album is called The Best Damn Thing? That's...weird. But then again, Avril IS weird. I'm excited to hear her new songs! :excited: I'll share them with you as soon as I have them. :wink2:

Has anyone heard her newest song? The chorus is in Mandarin. It's quite funny, it's totally edited

i've done my research on why the different verison of "girlfriend":
"Avril Lavigne’s new single, “Girlfriend” from her new album The Best Damn Thing is already a hit, currently sitting at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in the U.S. What makes Avril’s newest song unique is that she recorded an alternate version of the song partially sung in Chinese. In order to capitalize on her popularity in (East) Asia, she recorded the chorus of the song in Mandarin, as well as Japanese and five other European languages: Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Portuguese. Hindi was attempted, but alas it proved too difficult for the Canadian singer. The chorus of the Chinese version is a direct translation from the English version of her song, which goes “I don’t like your girlfriend / You need a new one / I want to be your girlfriend / I know that you like me / It’s not a secret / I want to be your girlfriend”.
According to her manager, Terry McBride:
In order to get the intonation and meter just right, she spent hours studying recordings by foreign language singers. Once Lavigne felt comfortable, she headed into the studio with a tutor and spent "a couple of hours nailing it," McBride said in an interview Thursday following a keynote address at Canadian Music Week.
Appealing to China and its massive market is of particular concern for those who manage the 22-year-old's career. McBride said analysis of online traffic suggests the largest chunk of her fans is in Beijing and two other Chinese cities.
"Her consumption is greater in Asia than what it is in all of the Western Hemisphere combined," McBride told an audience earlier Thursday at the annual music industry conference. "And some of those cities outweigh some of the biggest countries as far as the demand of consumption."
The manager did not specify which other two Chinese cities contain a large chunk of her fans. Should her popularity in Asia continue to soar, Avril’s management is showing signs that she could possibly tour China sometime in 2008."-source http://www.shanghaiist.com/archives/2007/03/15/avril_lavigne_p.php

the first day her album came out i was lookin round for new artists and the cover attracted me
i started listenin to skaterboy and naked and it was amazing
then she became a major hit and i was really happy for her
i think that her popularity level has died down
and since she began to dress all gorgeous and stuff
a lot of her fans have begun to call her a poser
i personally dont care but i must say that her first album had a nicer
"feel" then her newer one
To me, Avril's songs are okay. I even used to like some of her older songs like 'I'm With You' and 'Thing I'll Never Say', but for now, I don't usually listen to her songs anymore. (May be because I've grown old, so this kind of songs is just not my type anymore. LOL*)

I also liked Avril's old stuff, but I must admit that I didn't like "Girlfriend" when I first heard it. But when I heard it on SNL, I actually found myself singing along... Ugh!

Avril maybe a little too popular in my opinion because when her song "Complicated" first came out. They played that song so much that my ears bled.
I even heard little kids singing it in shopping malls & stores.I like some of her songs, but I have to say she needs to work on her attitude a little.
Because I heard about how she criticized some fans for dressing up like her.How selfish can you be???:shifty:
