Artiste Leslie Cheung (46) jumped to his death this evening (1st April 2003) from Central's Mandarin Oriental Hotel. He was pronounced dead, while on the way to Queen Mary hospital. There was a will at the scene of his suicide.

The police spokesman declined to confirm that the victim is Leslie, and only revealed that the artiste by the name of Zhang X Rong (Leslie's name) who is well known for his singing and have a lot of fans, jumped to his death from Central's Mandarin Oriental Hotel.

Meanwhile, Leslie's brother-in-law and the doctor are holding a press conference at Queen Mary Hospital.

Leslie Cheung, born in 1956 12th of September was from a middle class family. He had ten siblings and went to England for overseas studies in 1971.

As Leslie's father passed away in 1976, Leslie was forced to drop his studies and returned to Hong Kong. Later on, Leslie made his mark when he took part in an amateur singing competition, winning himself the Hong Kong division runner-up and the Asia division fifth position. This caught the attention of the TV station and he got into the entertainment biz.

In 1983, Leslie embarked on his singing career. With his debut album, he was groomed to become an idol. In 1984, his "MONICA" album hit a sale of 200,000 copies. At his peak of his singing career, he announced that he stopped singing and went on to acting in movies.

I really don't know what happened in the past few years to him but I am very shocked cos his latest appearance at the Pepsi concert, he seemed so happy. I know it might be a cover but he really did look genuinely happy. It's really sad that he committed suicide.

OMG, i can't believe that he is dead. I'm still in shock here. But, there was already some indications of his odds behaviors these couple of months ago when i read in the news, like he did not want to do anything, but i thought and the industry thought that he was ok. I'm so shocked!! I wasn't a huge fan or anything but anytime someone commits suicide I'm always sad. (length of time given for sadness varies, however).

Anyway, I heard he has AIDS. But I think that's just a rumor.

I thought he was a good actor and I enjoyed his films. One of his films that moved me was Farewell, My Concubine, just because it was so DAMN SAD!!

Also, I really liked one of his movies (wuxia) where he was a martial arts fighter or something, but the entire thing was a spoof. They kept referring to him as MU CHUEN TUO ZHAI (Kimura Takuya) the famous actor from Japan. Does anyone know what movie this is? I'd like to watch it again.

She was an actress from the 80s, I still watch a bunch of her old series. But she committed suicide over unrequited love.

For those of you not familiar with him, Leslie Cheung is a veteran HK actor. He studied at Leeds University in England, and on returning to HK, started his career in entertainment industry after winning a singing competition. He's a great actor, my fav works of his being Farewell my Concubine, Days of Being Wild (he won best actor), and He's a Man She's a Woman. He's also one of the first Asian artiste to announce that he is bisexual, like lepencil said. Someone mentioned Mr. Tong, that's his long-time boyfriend, they're often photographed together, he's pretty open abt things. Rumors surround his death. Some say they've heard noises of the couple arguing in their apartment for the past weeks. Others say he's been possessed by spirits ever since he acted in his last horror movie - Inner Senses (like mango said).

Local media said Cheung, 46, who earned international acclaim for his portrayal of an opera star in the 1993 historical epic 'Farewell, My Concubine', had committed suicide.

Cable Television reported that Cheung had left a note saying he was suffering from emotional problems before his death at the Mandarin Hotel in Hong Kong's Central district.

Cheung was one of Hong Kong's most popular performers, notable for being one of only a few Asian stars to play openly gay characters.

He came out about his sexuality after playing one of his most famous gay roles in the acclaimed 1997 movie 'Happy Together', directed by Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai.
Cheung entered showbusiness after returning to Hong Kong following studies at Leeds University in northern England.

He achieved success as a canto-pop singer and enjoyed Asian-wide fame with his successful 1981 album 'The Wind Blows On'.


Cheung's success as a singer quickly paved the way for a career in film. Sigh... I was online yesterday when my HK friend ICQ-ed me to say that Leslie Cheung committed suicide. I simply assumed that it was one off those tantrums that actors sometimes have and thought that he didn't die and just asked her why he did it. Then she sent me a url with the news and I was like, OMG! He died???
And I felt so affected by it.
Sigh... it's kinda indescribable. Although he is not someone I really idolize in that sense, he is an iconic figure that I grew up with. I watch his shows and one of my favourite album belongs to him. (Chong3 Ai4) He is a celebrity that I read about and talk about. Basically a celebrity that I look up to and like.
It's difficult to understand how the world can be so dark sometimes. It's even more difficult to understand how he must have been feeling when he took the leap. :(

He dared to reveal his sexuality to a intolerant society but did not let it overshadow is work. Amazing actor, superb singer... it just goes to show what heartbreak and pain can do to a soul.

I heard from my mom, who's been watching cable all day to catch all leslie's news, that he had been to the hospital to collect a medical report before proceeding to the hotel to jump. leslie became my 1st HK idol when we started watching the old Hong Kong serials. some of you probably don't know that he starred in those. he was such a fine, handsome actor. he could be a cassonva, a police detective, a spoilt rich man' son ... and eventually, of course, he also played gay roles with so much ease.

during the time leslie fans grouped against alan tam fans, i was there , growing up. at that time, i was having a difficult with my mom - but the only thing that we agreed on was leslie sang better. we bothe loved "fung gai juk chui - the wind blows". it's a beautiful song and was originally a japanese wong but leslie made it a hit and a song to remember by.

my best friend sns-ed me abt his death. it was the night ofl 1st april here in malaysia but i knew this friend would not play a joke on me. she loved him too.

i jumped out from bed and surfed the Net for something but as i knew no chinese, i didn't find anything. the next morning, i was practically waiting for the newspaper guy to hand me my papers. and there it was at the front page of our malaysian papers - the sad truth.

i was devastated.

the passing of leslie cheung affected me. more so because he chose to take his own life in such a dark way.

to leslie, you did not live in vain. you were an accomplished actor and singer. you were loved.

it's really sad, cuz the whole of hk is down. i was watching the news yesterday, and many of his fans were standing outside the mandarin oriental, where he committed suicide, holding candles and singing his songs. it was really sad watching them cuz it was raining and they were all crying at the same time...

you can tell that the whole city is really depressed about his passing because we were even talking about it in church. most of the local hk channels are replaying his movies and stuff. and yesterday, many hk artists such as allen tam, kelly chen... did a tribute show for him and they talked about their experiences with him and they were singing his songs. ahh... so sad... and kelly was crying too. they all dyed their hair back to black instead of the unnatural colours that they usually have

Mr.Tong said in an interview that leslie had attempted suicide last November. he took sleeping pills.

i think his close pals and relatives know why. they say they are not ready to disclose it yet. one theory is that leslie became very sad his voice is changing ... due to some gastro problem that he has.

serendipity, i'm also unable to get over the whole thing .... whenever they play his ballads on radio, i just can't help sobbing. my mom even asked me to stop being so emotional bcos she can't understand why i'm reacting so strongly to the death of someone who i have not met before.

I'm not to offend anyone..but I heard from a friend that he was gay and his father didn'y accept who he is and suicide..? Still he was my very first singer I like....

he was a gay but he was proud to be a gay. though some of his friends didnt encourage or agree with his lifestyle, he still continues to lead the way he like...

yes though i'm a christian i dont really agree with that kindda lifestyle, but then i really admire his courage and his 'i-suit-myself' atittude...he wear women's clothes in his concert, behaved like a women to the world out there...i mean who the hell will have such courage?

too many attentions has been put into him and his bf...which causes pressure between the both of them. i guess...maybe its a good thing for him to 'go'...as in..he can just put down everything and RIP.
