View Full Version : [SG Talk] Dumplings ! Dumplings ! Which is your favourite ?
Hello ! Hello !
With the dumpling festival recently over, I was just wondering :
1. Do you like dumplings ?
2. Which is your favourite ?
I know there's the traditional "ba zhang" and my favourite's the "Nonya zhang" filled with mince pork. Yum. Thinking about it is making me droool.
These days, ingenious shopkeepers are even filling the dumplings with all sorts of weird fillings, like....durians ?! Eeeeeeeeeuw
I have to also add that these days, they're being sold 365 days a year so one can always have dumplings instead of waiting for the festival.
So. Have you had your dumplings yet ?

hahaha.. I think this is a dumb question but which one is the nonya one? Is it the one with the light colored rice or the dark colored rice?
I'm pretty boring.. I've only tried these above 2.. and well I like them both equally :bleh:
I was watching Azio yesterday and I realised that they have so many different kinds of dumplings in Taiwan with filllings like red bean and all... *yum* they call them ba zhang too!! and I always thought that was a malay term.. :shy:

lol...dazzlette...when I was touring in Taiwan, those aunties will call out, Shio Ba Zhang!!! early in the morning while Im still asleep.
I think the lighted-coloured dumplings are Nonya and that's my favourite too!! :) I always eat them when the festival is here and it's not too fatty.
The dark-coloured ones are Ba Zhang which means fatty meat dumpings. :) I like it too especially with the Kao Lak inside. :)
Seems like a lot of new flavours.. but I still prefer to eat dumplings with meat inside. I am a carnivore!!

I only eaten a few type of dumplings, so I only like the traditional type called bak zang, I don't really like the plain one, pretty salty. Hope to eat more type of dumplings soon....

 I don't like dumpling, I can eat but I don't like  I don't like to eat a lot of rice. normally my grandsma filled minch pork and yolk inside, I can't imagine what it will b with durian.
there isn't any more dumplings left in my house!!
You can buy it from ANYWHERE these days ! No need to wait for Dumpling festival :)
I don't mind "ba zhang" but I will remove the mushrooms and khao lak. I know lots of people love it (ie, hisashi) but eeeeuw, don't like them. I'm a 100% pure meat person.
Does anyone like the sweet ones ? I think you eat it with sugar. Or something like that. I haven't tried it but glutinous rice + sugar doesn't sound quite...right.

Ohh so only the black ones are called Ba Zhang... hahaha forgive my ignorance.... :shy:
Ok actually now that I think about it.. that does make sense.. cos 'ba' is meat in Hokkien... I really like those.. the meat makes the whole dumpling really sweet....
I wonder.. do any of your mums or grandmas still wrap the dumplings themselves? Usually my family just buys them...
dazz : I think the sweet chang you're talking about is probably nonya zhang. Perhaps this might help :
Ba zhang - Filled with pieces of meat (sometimes with fat attached), mushrooms, sometimes has egg yolk and chestnut
Nonya zhang - Filled with mince meat. Usually sweeter than ba chang.
Sweet zhang - No fillings. Usually smaller than the usual zhangs. Eaten with sugar.
Sadly, no one in my family knows the art of wrapping zhangs. We'd just buy them from the stalls. I was lucky that one of my colleague's family still wraps zhangs and she brought them to work to share. They were yummy !
Btw, I confess. This might sound crazy but my favourite way of eating nonya zhang is with chilli sauce ! Not any chilli sauce, mind you. But chilli sauce from either Maggi or KFC. Go try it ! It's really delicious.... :)

Chilli sauce? :glug: erm, I dun fancy chilli that much so i rather dip it in fried food stuff..
yeah.. ene is right abt those "zhangs".. maybe the sweet zhang is also called Gi/Ki Zhang? :? Those u can dip sweet sauce or sugar..but i hate it.. its bland thats why have to put sugar...and its yellow in colour and I will eat it on the condition that there's no dumplings and it happened that after the praying in order not to waste the food, I will eat it. so..it's normally used for praying...
My mom used to make lots of them.. all nonya dumplings!! that's why I love it!! but due to her age, she made less and less..and this year, we aren't supposed to make them because my aunt passed away...

Dumplings with chilli sauce??
Hmm....you can gaurantee that there will be no side effects? :brows: ..just joking! Maybe i will try it...hope it will taste alright..
Anyway, i have also only the traditional ba zhang and the nonya zhang. Both are equally nice to me....but after hearing ene's way of eating with chilli, i thought eating it with tar tar sauce would be nice too, yeah?
Though i have never tried it before, maybe one of you may wanna try? :bleh:

i used to like Ba zhang until i eat my first nonya zhang last year..
till now i never eaten ba zhang and only eat nonya zhanga\..
nonya zhang is much much better, sweeter, the meat is nice too, there are more filling in the nonya zhang than the ba zhang..
the dumpling with no filling is  ..but i used to like it when i was young because it is real sweet..now i don't eat it anymore
I have eaten nonya zhangs with chilli sauce all this time and yes, I'm still very much alive. So go on, try it ! It's YUMMY.
mushimushi : Not too sure about tar tar sauce really. Hm..... :hmm:
You just got me thinking. How about nonya zhangs with the following sauces :
- BBQ
- Ketchap
- Thai chilli sauce
- Oyster sauce
- Sweet sauce
- Mayonnaise
:D
NONYA ZHANGs ROCK !

oh ene Now that you've clarified the different 'zhangs'.. I would say I like the Ba Zhang a tweeny bit more ... hehehe call me a little little weird but I like the the chestnuts and the big chunks of meat in those.... I find it's sweet in a meaty way.. but I don't like the fats in those... makes me guity after eating those...
I can imagine eating zhangs with chilli.. (I mean we singaporean can eat almost anything with chilli right? ) but the other sauces sound weird to me  it's like sweet with salty?!?
Reading this thread just made me feel like a steaming hot nonya zhang now
i still prefer the traditional ba zhang.... nicer.... the meat in it are more and it makes me drools whenever i smells them...
I just had to come in here to tell all that I had a nonya zhang for breakfast. YUM ! It's from the basement foodcourt at Tangs and it's filled to the brim with minced pork. Go get it today !
Geez. Do I sound like an advertisement jingle for nonya zhang or what ? :?

nonya zhang for breakfast, never tried before, will it affect you stomach, dumplings is not easy to digest, so I don't eat it early the morning. I never tried nonya zhang before, you make me want to have it now.

nonya zhang? is it the white white one? my fave dumpling is the white one, with lots of meat inside  hate it when they decide to act clever and put in those li zi :big yuck: the crunchy feel just doesnt go well with dumplings.
ho_yt : Guess what ? You're right ! I ate it this morning and it's now 3.35pm but I'm still not hungry ! Maybe I'll skip lunch and have dinner tonight. Note to self : Not good to eat zhang for breakfast.
tort : Yep, that's the white one with mince meat. See my previous post with the various definitions of zhangs :)

i love dumplings! i use to eat them everyday for breakfast before school started. i dont know the different varites, but i love them all just as long as they have meat and veggies in it... i dont think what's inside really counts for me. what i think is important is the sauce! i use this sweet sauce, and it's so good, and i mix it up with some onions and sesame oil (sp?)
i love the home-made ones, i think they just taste so much better. but my mom isnt good at making them, they always break.

wow! all these talk about zhangs are making my mouth water! I am craving for my favourite nonya zhang right now!
I never liked the sweet zhang. it had this gooey taste that never appealed to me. i don't mind ba zhang sometimes. especially when i've eaten too many nonya zhangs in consecutive weeks. here's a picture of a nonya zhang to clarify people's doubts about zhangs!

oho when i went to xi'an we tried 16 different dumplings, all differently flavored and some were even modeled into little animals. i have to say that after the 5th one i couldn't tell the difference, but they were still quite yummy. i like making them too - folding them is so much fun. i don't like "bai cai" dumplings...yuck. "jiu cai" is the best :D
