I was born in the land of Ulurah. Where chickens rap, horses ride jockeys, and asses such as yourself pop your head out from under whatever-rock-gave-birth-to-you very infrequently because whenever you do appear, people bite.

I hear you're a strong contender for the Darwin awards...I hope you win.

i can speak both mando and canto... canto if I really want to but no one who really knows me (including my family) ever heard me speak it. I only say it if I'm forced to, nothing against it, i'm just not use to speaking in canto anymore.

I'm Chinese...born here, I spoke Cantonese fluently until I was like 7 (well as much as a 7 year old can) then lost it all really through schooling. Well not all, I can understand some Cantonese, but speaking is a great effort, usually takes me about a minute to piece together a basic sentence.

i was born here
speak a lil of mandarin and cantonese
but not enough to actually understand what i hear, or what i say

however...if i listen to a song long enough...i can understand it
(or at least make it up enough so it sounds right to me)

my family came from hong kong. i know some cantonese. i'm learning mandarin. my chinese stinks. hence my screenname.

it's really hard to practice cuz there's so many manda speakers in my area and not enuff canto speakers. and the ones who CAN speak canto stink more than me.

i speak mandarin...but i'm not very good at it haha. i can't read at all because i only went to chinese school for less than a year when i was 5. although i can read some basic characters that i learned from taking japanese. my comprehension of mandarin is okay, but i don't think i speak very well. i often start stuttering because i get self conscious about my accent. i'm learning korean right now...pretty decent at it so far lol.

hey, I'm born in NZ

so english is my first language.

canto is my second, and I guess manderin is my third.

I used to speak more canto than manderin, at present I guess I speak canto at home and manderin with my taiwanese friends....
(can read and write a lil)
*should mention my manderin vocab is a bit bigger than my canto now.
though in both language I can communicate fluently.

Hey all! I can understand cantonese but I'm not going speaking it fluently. I gotta think for a bit to say stuff. It's more like broken cantonese. I usually mix cantonese and english together. I never thought of learning mandarin b/c I know I still have to master cantonese. However, ever since being in love with Jay, it's one of my goals to know mandarin!!!

Winston
03-17-2005, 09:22 AM
Speaking of mando, i'm learning it at Uni, it's so different, i'm a really fluent cantonese (thank god for TVB videos :D) speaker, but i just never spoke so formally like mando speakers do. It feels weird speaking formal chinese.

Hi everyone, long time reader, first time poster. :shiny:
I am a white aussie, thats WHITE. But I've been learning mando in school for about 8 1/2 years, and I have very little to show for it.
Even tho mando is fun, and easy, I kinda wish I had been doing canto, because I think it sounds a whole lot better. But then again, white guys trying to speak chinese always looks stupid :prop:

yeah i think it's a little hard to learn canto... i speak canto, but i'm learning mando now, lol i mean the transition is fine,

this is how i see it canto -> mando = changing from slang speaking to formalised speaking
and mando is changing from formal speaking to the more slang speaking, i mean u can obviously convert from mando to canto and speak the same, however, half the canto speakers wouldn't be use to how you speak. Furthermore apparently there's more tones in canto as opposed to the 4 main tones in mando.

lately, i've found canto to be very nice..and would love to learn it :P would be aweosme if anyone can teach me!

lol, it's not that easy to teach anyone.

There's formal canto, and slang canto, slang canto to me, is canto which often can't be expressed in writing, because many of the characters don't exist.

Apparently there's 8 tones in canto, i'm not sure, lol since i grew up speaking it.

Darkshrimp

omg. it's like the total opposite for me. Like, nobody really cares where i was born (in Aust, or China, or even Japan or whatever), but they all automatically assume i can speak like 5 billion languages, "oh, can you speak chinese and japanese and thai and korean and blah blah blah..." and i'm like... BUT I CAN ONLY SPEAK CANTO SO GET OFF MY BACK BEFORE I BITE YOUR FACE OFF!!!! And my chinese friends say to me "if you don't speak madaring, then you don't speak Chinese. Mandarin is Chinese, and Canto is crap... blah blah blah" GO DIE IN A HOLE!!!:rasp:
*sigh* thus ends my rant

Okay,
I'm from Penang, Malaysia.
Penang is well I could say a place that has the most majority Chinese in Malaysia.
Most of my Chinese friends doesn't understand or neither speak mando (its called Chinese now) since we're from an English-educated medium.
We usually communicate in Hokkien and English.
Hokkien has always been a widely spoken dialect in Penang and I do not deny that other minority dialects such as Cantonese and Teochew. I do have a few Cantonese friends too.
I understand and could speak in canto prety well (I learned it through TVB dramas from Hong Kong)

According to Wikipedia:
# This usually refers to Standard Mandarin, which is the standard spoken form of the Chinese language officially recognized by in the People's Republic of China, the Republic of China and the Republic of Singapore, and is the spoken form of Chinese most commonly taught as a foreign language.

# The term can also refer to Standard Cantonese, especially when used in the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau in the People's Republic of China.

# This can also be used as a collective term that refers to all spoken and writen variants of the Chinese language.

But personally, I would think that Chinese language resembles Mandarin. Though I guess you guys know that mandarin is not recognized anymore (Chinese now). Cantonese isn't Chinese. And if Cantonese IS Chinese, doesn't that mean that Hokkien, Teochew, Hakka, etc. Chinese also?

Chinese is a language.
Cantonese remains a dialect.

Anyway, I'm planning to take Chinese as my third language as I am a Chinese myself.

My family also originates from Canton... so I speak Cantonese... though not extremely well because I'm a banana born in Canada. XD

But for some reason I prefer to listen to Mandarin music... I hardly have any Canto on my iPod! Jay all the way =)
