well, here's my interpretation. basically, it revolves around jolin and two guys. the guy she's still with, i'm gonna call him guy #1. the guy that she likes, i'll call him guy #2.

as described at the beginning of the song, the guy (guy #2) that jolin likes seems to be thinking about something else, but he was probably thinking of the situation with her. but that moment just flashed by in his eyes as detected by jolin. she thought it looked like sadness, and so she became more quiet as she pondered about the situation.

then for the next part of the song, it seems that jolin was experiencing some irony. it's like the whole world knows what's going on and she's the 'fool'. that can explain her embarrassment, and that's why she just smiled and walked away. but deep down inside, she actually does know what's going on and is only pretending that she doesn't. it's probably cuz she can't bear to to unveil what the guy she likes is actually thinking due to circumstances that she can foresee. and somehow, this guy is different from others that she knows.

life is hardly what one would expect. she probably felt that the earth is so small and crowded, and even the sun is purposely shining on her with such a cruel brightness. and now from the lyrics, you can see that the guy she likes actually appeared in her life after she's already with the first guy (guy #1), who she's still with apparently.

for the chorus, she was questioning the guy that she likes (guy #2) why he couldn't speak his mind and voice his thoughts clearly. his gentle voice is still resonating in her ears as she remembers all those tender words he had spoken to her. but at the same time, she's standing beside the guy (guy #1) that she's with and the guy (guy #2) she likes is standing in front of her. because of this, she's feeling really sad inside as she contemplates why and tries to come up with an answer. and then for the second part of the chorus, she's questioning him (guy #2) again, almost in a scolding tone. she can still clearly remember the tender pain she experienced with him, which is probably a bittersweet sensation. and now the guy (guy #1) she's with is standing in front of her while the guy (guy #2) she likes is passing her by. and suddenly when realization settles in, her heart sinks as feelings of hurt enter. she is left wondering why... why this has to be, why it has to end this way, why things didn't work out, etc.

all in all, i think if the guy (guy #2) she likes had been bold enough to speak up and take a stance on their love, she would've broken it off with the current guy (guy #1) and be with the guy that she likes. but since he didn't do that, it came down to them being apart with no future together.
