View Full Version : jay's square of prague

you know, after listening to jolin's album several times, particular the square of prague song (cos that's my favourite :D ), i started thinking that square of prague doesn't really fit into jolin's album at all...
it sounds more like a jay song featuring jolin rather than a jolin song featuring jay..i know he wrote it and all that, but what i mean is..let's take landy for example..jay wrote a lot of song for her and she managed to make those songs hers...sure, some of the songs have got 'written by jay' all over it, but landy brings a certain something to the songs (i dunno if i'm making any sense but bear with me :p ) and so do most of the singers jay's ever wrote for..
granted, jolin's new album is much much better than her last ones, but there's nothing there that gives us an idea of what her style of music is, or what she really wants to do with her music..that's why the songs jay wrote for her there, especially square of prague, should've probably been released as a jay single or something before he releases his new album...
or, in fact, square of prague would've really not been out of place in the 8D album..
i dunno...it's just what i think...i just feel a great sense of pity that a song as brilliant as square of prague is being placed in such an unbalanced album as jolin's new one.. :(

Hey, I agree with you. I listen to that song all the time because I like Jay's voice in it. Jolin isn't even in it that much, yeah? And I also like the little kid. I should have been a Jay song on the Jay album or something, it doesn't fit in with the poppy style of Jolin's album. I think it's too creative for her album. It has a definate Jay feel to it, mysterious, dark and really different, and since Jolin doesn't really have those attributes to her album or her character, it seems as if it doesn't belong. Besides, you can tell since her album is so mixed that she isn't a person that really knows what direction she wants to go with her music as well.

i was totally doubting that the song was sung by jolin. she sings a few lines briefly and it's just jay & the cute little kid singing. this song really isn't her style. and i agree that it's more like jay's song, not jolin's. another reason i don't like her is because she doesn't have her own style, and doesn't have a unique sound & voice

that's why i love landy! =D well i'd categorize jolin under 'pop' even though she does all these songs out of her character. i like singers with an aim or an obvious style.. like if i heard a sun yanzi song i could just tell.. same with jay. i guess this 'growth' album jolin produced didn't really grow that much or maybe i'm just being too harsh .. ^_^

I agree... :D I posted the same thing like this last night...I really like Square of Prague too, but I also think it should be one of Jay's songs instead of Jolin's, because she hardly sings in it...and the style of the song is different from the rest of the songs on her new album...but I admit, I like the songs on her new CD much better than her older songs...don't know why... :? It does also kind of bother me that her album has no particular style to it...and there's not really anything special about her sound/voice...hehe, that's why I will never be as much a fan to her as I will be to Jay... :) I do like the music, though...not bad...maybe her style just needs more defining...? :?

When my sis saw her 72 changes MV and she was introducing new MVs..she thot jolin was becoming another ayumi..>< yeah..bcoz of Jay she become "more popular" and this song was NOT made for her it suits Jay and tat kid better ^^;; and she only sings one verse..? Maybe her new album has a lot of styles that's wat new albums are made of..diff kinds of style..^^;; she is just a pop singer..I prefer someone has talents..^^;

yes, there are alot of Jolin in entertainment tv shows upon the release of her new album. and yes i really agree that her image is like a J-pop star. her posters and mv, she really looks like any J-pop singer..... she has AMAZINGLY turned into a beautiful swan....... tho i think she looks abit fishy...
as for the song, YES! i totally agree that jolin oni sing a few lines. most are rapped by Jay and the little kid. and that's precisely the reason why i play it repeatedly cos most are rapped by Jay! :p
it did not seem like a song belonging to Jolin. it reminds me of Pan Wei Bo song, Tell me, he also sang with a gal, and he oni rapped the parts... then the chorus are sang by the gal, just like this song!
hmm, i think Jolin's singing has not improve at all... i wonder what she has been doing over the years as a singer? doesnt she upgrade or anything? mabbe i dont know she does.......

i TOTALLY agree with everyone here..haa! jolin's cd is good all b/c Jay brought his style into her cd. she doesnt even have her own style to showcase to her fans...tsktsk.....
haha, i think the kid has more difficult lyrics to sing than jolin. the kid had to rap : a a fu shou a a fu shou yap so so sorry so so so
Moderato Andantino Portmento Fortissimo. this isnt easy to rap for a little kiddy esp the last four words. haa! i cant pronounce portmento. kudos to the kid! as for jolin...anyone could've sung her part. haa!
honestly, i never heard that song, kinda difficult to download that song (my internet connection is so slow), damn!!!
curious about that song, but i think i will still don't like jolin , and about she look like ayumi?? i don't agree , ayumi more faboulous, and i love her so much, she's cool!!!!
hope i can hear square of prague soon, really really soon

if you didnt know those two songs were written by jay, would you still like them???
if the songs are good, yes i will like them!!! but honestly cause we know that two songs written by jay, we wanna know those songs more than if we dunno that those songs written by jay. Jolin's songs, every jay's fans wanna know her songs, bcoz you know talking about her always connected to jay
haha i also like square of prague.. it's so cute wif jay's n that little kid's rap! onli heard the demo version of it so didnt get to hear jolin's singing part! haha~ i wouldnt consider buying the album though.. neva a jolin fan in the first place.. i would onli d/l the song.. anyone heard of "shuo ai ni"? pls give comments...

hey, yeah, i bet the demo part is a hell of a lot better, it would probably sound more raw without jolin being in it..
i'm glad everyone's agreeing with me
finally, i already heard that song, yeahhh it's so cool, jay n kid's rap part, DIAO!!!!
backsound also great!!!! like an europe environment, Jay's great, so talented!!!

Does anybody happen to know the lyrics to Square of Prague? I am in love with that song. Personally I only like Jay's rapping in there. Jolin doesn't really sing anything special. She just sings the chorus while Jay and the little boy rap everything for her. Why is it even considered her song? I know that Jay wrote it for her, but it seems like its the other way around. Wouldn't Jolin want to rap in her songs? Or maybe she's not fast enough. Heehee. I don't really know her voice. It seems the same as other girl singers. Her album came out already? I wonder if it made it big like Jay's. I was so impressed with that song though, and it gives me an impression that Jay's new album would be even better, because I am in love with Jay's song!

hmm i totally agree with u guys.. i think it shouldn't be called a jolin song.. i mean if we consider the amount of time that each person (i.e jay, the kid and jolin) lend their voices to the song, i think jay and the lil kid would beat her.. and the example of pan wei bo's tell me perfectly illustrates how it could be called jay's square of prague featuring jolin cai.. anyhow i have to admit i like the song quite a lot of jay lends his vocals ( or should i say rapping voice) to it.. hmm but i guess jay doesn't mind helping a friend in he song.. but really i think his voice really adds the real flavour into the song.. haha anyway if this song is any indication of wad's gonna come up in his next album.. i simply can't wait!!! :)

I haf a feeling he might use Square on his new album... he seemed to put quite a bit of effort into it, like going to find the kid to rap in it and all... and it does seem more like his song featuring Jolin than the other way round!

i really hope the song is gonna be on jayīs cd itīs really cool, itīs sound kinda weird when u listen to it the 1st time, but then after couple oftimes u just can get enough of it :jump:

I only listened to the song once, and indeed it is very Jayish, but should Jay fans be bashing her music and identity as a singer for this? Jay fans didn't like it when Lee Hom fans were attacking Jay...so I think that even if we can't be agreeable to the fact that Jay gave her a hand, we should at least refrain from bashing Jolin. I mean, who are we to say that Jay shouldn't have written the songs for her...I mean, shouldn't we be happy that we get to listen to a new song written by Jay long before he releases his new album in midsummer. As a singer/song-writer, u don't always get to work with the most brilliant crew...

but we're not bashing her music and identity just because she's not up to jay's music standards...we're criticising her cos she seems to be unable to find any identity in her music, regardless of who she's working with...
besides, this isn't about her, it's about jay's song deserving a better place

You guys voiced my sentiments exactly!
My sis and I were having this exact same discussion! The song sounded like a Jay & Cute Kid featuring That Woman thingy... not something she should claim as HER SONG! It's weird how it all seems so justified when her part in the song is not even prominent.
I like 'Say Love You'... it kinda grew on me... needless to say her singing kinda killed it but I still listened on for Jay's music... the 'rap-pish' part is real cute!
Anyway, her singing is really blah! Didn't she go to the US for vocal training or something? How come there's no improvement?
Sheesh... she must not be working hard enough... or she's really lousy.
Sorry to people who likes Jolin but to me, it sucks that Jay writes for her... it truly truly sucks... :(

Most of you guys have said that the song is more Jay's than Jolin's cos he sang most of it. Have u guys read the reports abt why that is the case? Don't count on the accuracy of these ba1 gua4 articles, but the reports said that this song was written when jay and jolin were still "passionately in love" (re4 lian4) and so jay wanted to help jolin do the rap part cos she wasnt as confident abt it. It was meant to be some kind of duet for them. Even tho jay sang much of it, it was still jolin's song cos jay had 'given' it to her.
The version jay gave on the message he left on the alfa bbs was that he found the little boy to do the rap with Jolin. Weird how he didnt even mention himself rapping with the boy. He actually said, "who would have thought of a kid rapping with Cai tong xue"...

maybe jolin actually HAD recorded the version where she rapped but it didn't sound so good, so instead they decided jay should do it.... but why is she not confident in rapping, cos she rapped in that other song, 'qi shi jing shen' (or qi shi shen jing? i forgot)..
ooorr.. i have another theory..maybe jay didn't mention his own rapping in the alfa bbs site cos he himself knew that the song sounds completely HIS and he's nice enough not to steal the spotlight and let jolin takes the credit...i mean he's always been nice to her, right, considering that he's probably not working with her for talent, but cos she's a good friend

yeah i read tt article too. wrote about it in the other thread abt Jolin's album. really like this song...basically coz the lyrics and tune is nice...nothing to do with her singing. she juz seems like a background singer! love the lyrics...tink fang wen shan's really a genius! esp how he(mabbe jay?) incorporated tt "moderato...." musical terms part to link with the 1st line about the piano...but "a a fu shou" juz doesn't make sense does it??

Gosh I love the song! It's damn nice! Except for the parts jolin sings haha... yea it's true that english r&b also has alot of songs where the guy raps and the girl only sings the chorus but at least in those cases pple like ashanti sing and they have nice SPECIAL voices, this jolin doesn't even sing well!! And those songs are usually like Ja Rule featuring Ashanti.. This one's supposed to be jolin featuring jay! She's such a joke! I think the little kid did better than her even! Is there really a demo version without her singing??
I think you guys are so right about how she doesn't have a real style, sometimes she sings those pop-ey songs and sometimes to like jump on the bandwagon or what she tries to sing r&b it's like she doesn't have her own style she's just swayed around by everything else, she's a follower!! And not even a good follower!

found the song super duper diao!! the arrangments parts especially!
I've always loved his rap and backup singing in other people's songs, like Coco's "Dao ma dan" and Jolin's "Qi shi jing shen" .. but this time I guess he went a bit overboard, halfway thorugh the song I was asking myself - is this song supposed to be sang by her or wat?? anyway, you guys remember her "Qi shi jing shen"? I think that's why they dun let her rap again.. her performance in that song was a total humiliation to jay's songs ...an act cute voice trying to rap~~

its called "Bu la ge guang chang" in chinese. and yes, "qi shi jing shen" was by jay too. she juz didn't sound very natural while rapping Jay-style
i cant rmb where i read this from but it says that jay wasn't satisfied with the feeling of the kid's rapping so he decided to do it himself(or involve himself).. not sure whether it's true.. but i feel that this most likely is the case since jay is a perfectionist when it comes to music

ya- she realli isn't fit for rapping. in qi shi jing shen, it sounds realli slurred[ not jay-style slurred, lyk lisping slurred].
b/c it sounds lyk she cant pronounce the words that fast, the song turned out all muddled.
if they get another singer to do that song, i think the result would be MUCH better. maybe even listenable [not a real word]

Jay's square of prague is sooo good.
You know I've been thinking since Jay would release the 4th album, the back of my mind kept thinking... well kind of worried that he might run out of inspiration to make a really nice songs. (since the previous albums are like so darn good). But after listening to Jay's square of prague, my perception totally changed. Dang, he sure still have that TALENTS. **sigh of relieve**
Personally, the Square of Prague is very inventive, creative, and unique. No wonder he's very satisfied with it, because I'm satisfied too. :) His rapping, well... as always, is so darn cool. It's funny since I thought that Jolin was rapping with him with her childish voice. But turns up it was the kid who's rapping with him. :D Jolin's voice in this ... okay, lah. Not that special or anything. :p But overall, this song is two thumbs up!!! Jay is a real music genius!!!!

cloudsurfer, are u sure that guy in Shuo Ai Ni is jay? cos on a jaywife discussion thread, the fans concluded that it wasn't jay, cos jay only raps in the songs that he produces, like Qi Shi Jing Shen, Prague Square, Coco's Dao Ma Dan. He did not produce Shuo Ai Ni, only wrote the melody, and there're parts that were rapped in English I think? and it didnt sound like jay then... so i dunno.. apparently some jay fan went to check jolin's CD sleeve or her fan site and found out the rap was done by it's this guy called.. i forgot his name, but its not jay.

yah, the kid rapping, it's italian terms that sounds like japanese...... kuz he sort of adds a "yor" sound in the end.... prage square is sooooo good...... one of the best songs in the album i hv to agree. and i think jolin was okay in there, but i fink it'll be better without the kid.... that's my opinion. and i really think "shuo ai ni" was rapped by jay too1!! it sounds like him.......!!
i think this song is nice and also shuo ai ni...shld be the nicest songs in jolin's album.. i think shou ai ni isn't rapped by jay coz i got buy this album and the name of the person who rap is not jay...wonder if anyone has watch this sq of prague's mtv... i think the opening scene looks like the pa, wo hui lei le... and some other scenes in the mtv giv me the feeling of the that song too.... or izzit i think too much liao?
anyway, really hope that jay will perform sq of prague in his next concert... i think it will definitely giv a different feeling of the song from jolin...

Just heard square of Prague and I have to say....it needs a little getting used to. But after a few listens it's ok...and this is Jolin's song? i would've thought it was the kids song. His voice is so adorable. A future rapper for sure. Especially the last part...sounds like Japanese and chinese tho'.
very unique, never heard anything like it before hope Jays next album has more of the same style. Have to admire Jolin though, it's not easy to eccept and sing a new style like this especially if it's not written by herself and it's a pretty daring sound. Jay has the coolest rapping style. very kewl. kewl. kewl. kewl. ok nuff said... :p

I think that Jolin's praque square is a true blue Jay composition. it has all that characteristics of a Jay song. I don't have that album yet, so I can't really judge. Jolin actually does very little singing in the song, most of the song is being rapped by Jay and the little cute boy. I think that her voice sounds kindof flat in that song? I dunno, really.

Yeah totally agree with you wackome about that Jolin woman's singing style in that other Jay-composed song, which isn't Shuo Ai Ni or Prague Square, and I also can't remember the title. When I listened to it I was like, "What the hell... stop trying to copy him lah..." Totally sounded like something Jielun would do, and "Nuo Fu" popped into my head.
I also agree with what everyone has said about Prague Square, it's suuuuuch a Jielun song! It has his trademark written all over it, especially the intervals whereby he introduces some accordian music (thought it was overkill after a while though, way too much of it already), and her voice was kind of out of place. The style is too Jielun, which means that Jolin woman simply reeks of unoriginality. Probably not Jielun's intention, but too bad lah yeah?
It should've been his own song.

hmm... about this, i totally agree. Coz Jay doesn't has the feeling... and i can't imagine Jay singing Jolin's type song. It's abit far too much for me at least to imagine that keke. hmm.... If there's really a song that fits Jay, it's sure a song Jolin can't sing. I personally don't like Jolin's song very much. keke Not that i wanna be bias. But i realised... Jolin's CD fomat song might sound nice, but when i'm watching her live concert on tv... They're either lip concert or... her voice is...ehh, just not nice as those i the CD. I was wondering... do jolin really have a nice voice like Jay? (oh i'm out of topic :P)
well, if it's a song Jay write for Jolin, Jay must have putted some afford to make sure it fits Jolin keke :P (Any offendes pls pm and tell me, i'll make changes immedianately^^)

honestly, jolin WON'T b so popular w/o jay !!
at first i m happy for jay when the square got the best music arrangement. but when i knew dat it's on jolin's name, i m SO MAD !!! the square is better off w/o jolin singing in it...

When I heard "Square of Prague" in Hi Working Girl I thought that Jay sang it because the first part was the one being played mostly. I really thought that it was his song! Eventually, I realized it was Jolin. I agree that this song would be better if Jay sang it instead of Jolin.

i absolutely agree that the song would've been much better off in jay's 8d album than jolin's. against jay's amazing rapping jolin just sounded flat and crap. i really loved the song but STUPID JOLIN always ruins everything by BEING IN IT!!!! :excited: yeah the kid sounded much better than her! :) it's more a jay featuring jolin song than the other-way round.

you know, after listening to jolin's album several times, particular the square of prague song (cos that's my favourite :D ), i started thinking that square of prague doesn't really fit into jolin's album at all...
it sounds more like a jay song featuring jolin rather than a jolin song featuring jay..i know he wrote it and all that, but what i mean is..let's take landy for example..jay wrote a lot of song for her and she managed to make those songs hers...sure, some of the songs have got 'written by jay' all over it, but landy brings a certain something to the songs (i dunno if i'm making any sense but bear with me :p ) and so do most of the singers jay's ever wrote for..
granted, jolin's new album is much much better than her last ones, but there's nothing there that gives us an idea of what her style of music is, or what she really wants to do with her music..that's why the songs jay wrote for her there, especially square of prague, should've probably been released as a jay single or something before he releases his new album...
or, in fact, square of prague would've really not been out of place in the 8D album..
i dunno...it's just what i think...i just feel a great sense of pity that a song as brilliant as square of prague is being placed in such an unbalanced album as jolin's new one.. :(
I totally agree with you. you hear so much of jay and not enough of jolin for it to "feature" jay, lol.

ok, be honest here...
if you didnt know those two songs were written by jay, would you still like them???
definitely! i started liking jolin after hearing Shuo Ai Ni, Bu La Ge Guang Chang, Hai Dao, Dao Dai... and of course there were other songs not written by Jay that made me like her, like Love Love Love, Greek Girl sitting by the pond, etc... I actually don't really like some songs of hers written by Jay, like Jiu Shi Ai... Ni Zen Me Lian Hua Dou Shuo Bu Qing Chu was ok, but gets boring after a while, I admit.
But yea, I really don't know what kind of "style" Jolin is going for... it's always changing, and it's a nice change... I do like her music... I love Wan Mei and Wu Niang from her most recent album. Her song styles are always a mixture of other people's styles... like Jay Chou, Wang Lee Hom, David Tao... unless she actually starts singing in one style, she's really just all over the place lol... which I don't mind, it brings variety to the album
