i'm reading a sc-fi called "Infinity Concerto" by Greg Bear. It has all those imaginary realms/worlds and its different inhabitants. Reminds me a lot of LOTR but this is about human beings being transported into another world by music. However, in that new world, which is not on Earth, the inhabitants dislike music. So the humans actually suffer bcos thay are not allowed to play music.

I just read Red Dragon by Thomas Harris ( I think ) anyway its the prequel to Silence of the Lambs, well I watched the movie last year so decided to find out if there was anything I missed out on in the movie. They didnt specify why the guy went nuts. Well. Good book. I'm like hlf-way through from a Buick 8 by Stephen King, its rather slow and a bit gross. Bah..
I recommend: The Beach by herm, I forgot who but it was the basis for the film by L. dicaprio..

Currently alternating between:
Sylvia Plath - The Bell Jar (required reading material)
Roald Dahl - Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (to cheer me up)
Enid Blyton - The Magic Faraway Tree (to cheer me up somemore)
Vogue (I'm a girl, nuff said)
Btw, lots of ppl here seem to like Anne Rice huh?
I happen to think she writes too fancifully, too much purple prose.
Nonetheless, I finished her Vampire Chronicles up to Pandora.
How's the ones after that, let me know if I shouold follow up.
Sparkling_Jade:
Hey, Catcher in the Rye isn't too bad. I've still got an essay on that, let me know if you need my help. Alternatively, you can go get the movie version of the book. It always helps when you are in a hurry and can't be bothered to read it.

I've just finished Romeo and Juliet for English class and I'm starting Dragonflight by Anne McCaffery for my Outside Reading Project for English.
I've only read Interview with the Vampire and Monarch the Devil of the Vampire Chronicles series, but I plan to read the whole series sonner or later this year. Anne Rice is a pretty good writer. I like Stephen King and Michael Crichton too. I've only recently begin to read Stephen King books, but I've liked Crichton for a long time.
i'm reading Sense and Sensibility
its actually pretty interesting ^ ^;;
it's not school require though...i just like her writing style

i love Harry Potter! i cant usually stand fantasy, so with Harry Potter i'm able to say that i read all genres, from autobiographies to fantasy :shifty:
anyways, i havent been able to do much reading recently, due to the humongous pile of schoolwork that i'm dealt with. feeling very deprived, cos i used to read an awful lot as i work in a bookstore.
the last book i read was "The Devil and Ms Prym" by Paulo Coelho. it is not as easy to understand as his other books, but a good read nonetheless. the book that i cannot finish reading is Sophie's world, by Jostein Gaarder. I know its an awesome book and all, but i just cant bring myself to finish it. same case with Hong Lou Meng (Dreams of the Red Chambers?), been reading it for 2 yrs and i'm still at the first book
oh geesh! i cant wait for the latest Harry Potter book...sometime in July, right? about the same time as our guy's album. oh happy month!
grasshow-- is Blackwood Farm any good? coz i've always heard tha the Vampire Chronicles are only good up to the third book.

-Jo I'd recommend the film as well, it's by Ang Lee, beautiful, one of my all time fav.
Lovely Bones (sorry forgot the writer, it's a debut novel) - beautiful, poignant, sad. I start reading it in public place - almost cry openly from the first chapter !.

"Lovely Bones" is good but really depressing. I hate books that are depressing but can't seem to stop reading them.
Btw, I love all of Jane Austen's books. Sad that when I mention Jane Austen, first thing that comes to (most) guys' minds are the words "spinster"and "feminist"

It's been so long since Harry Potter I've fallen out of that phase. I used to be obsessed.. I read each book 4+ times.. all in total maybe 20 times.. o_O
Now I don't even read.. just magazines. My sis has Cosmopolitian and I read that but I reckon (Ron's word) it's a bit too mature in the sense of erh.. sex and all for me. But oh well I skip.

hmmm..you're right the first 3 are definitely the best, but then if you're a lestat fan you really have to read 'Memnoch the Devil', where he gets entangled between God and the Devil and all that..it's brilliant...but the rest are probably wouldn't be as exciting if you're not too much into the Chronicles...
Blackwood Farm...as far as i've read it's pretty slow moving, like, you really don't care for the chapters where there's no lestat, louis or the other vampire gang...but once they're in there it's worth a read...plus lestat's up to his old mischief again and i love that! he's a hero of mine hehehe

hey!! i'm a HUGE HP fan! i already pre-ordered my book.. sort of.. I went to the book store like months ago and i "pre-ordered" but their definition of pre-order is to write down my name and address.. o___O;; but im supposed to get 20% off. blah i think im going to pre-order again at b&n later on.
i just finished the book The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. And it's alright..gives you something to think about. I also just finished the book Shopaholic: Ties The Knot. I just LOVED the first two... the title caught my eye originally because I'm a shopaholic myself.. and so I bought the two books right away when they 2nd one had just came out... I saw the third one a little while ago and I bought it.. but I was a bit disappointed... I think throughout the whole thing... she doesn't shop~! Not really shop.. =T Not before. If you know what I'm talking about and like the series too.. There's going to be a new series next year about a girl that has a lot of secrets lol.
And I just finished my Japanese Seventeen mag. lol because they SOLD OUT of my fave mag... ViVi.. -____-;; those jerks!
I like Anne Rice too! Well I'm not a big fan.. but I've read a few of her books... Starting with the Vampire Chronicles. Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, The Queen of the Damned and also Vittorio the Vampire. I haven't read some of her books lately because I got tired of vampires and Vittorio the vampire sorta depressed me because I didn't want Vittorio to become a vampire lol. Plus when her books come out.. they're always in hard cover! So yeah... expensive. =P
As for Stephen King... I actually started reading his books when I was in the 4th grade.... Yea.. I had a high reading level.. :geek: along with Agatha Christie. Alas, I found their books not suitable to my tastes and stopped reading them and didn't pick them up again til I had matured. But I'm a chicken and reading King makes me scared so I don't like to read em anymore lol. ^^;;
There are some books I've started but haven't finished... The World According to Garp by John Irving and The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco. I'm open to all genres of writing...except for Biographies. I'm alright with non-fiction.. if the subject is interesting.... but I still haven't found anyone's life worth reading about yet. =T

Patricia Cornwell books are good, if you like this "profiler" kind of things. All other crime novel seems petty afterwards ( use to read Mary Higgins Clark b4).
Bcos of Patricia, I also read "Profiler" - think that's the title, uf sorry, again forget the writer's name, real story of FBI's profiler.

just finished reading Darkness at Sethanon by Raymond E. Feist.. excellent book..it's actually the 3rd book of the riftwar saga by the same author.. i strongly recommend his books for those who like fantasy/adventure..
riftwar saga : 1. magician
2. silverthorn
3. darkness at sethanon
there are other books (continuation) like
prince of the blood
shards of a broken crown..etc.
most are series so you should get the first book first and continue on..
erm..i like books by tamora pierce too..anyone read her song of the lioness series:
1. alanna
2. in the hand of the goddess
3. the woman who rides like a man
4. lioness rampant
i read a lot....all kinds of genre..read lots of mills and boon, stephen king (still like misery), danielle steel, julie garwood, judith mcnaught etc.

I see that most of you liked English Lit. I am an avid reader myself..but I prefer more contemporary sort of compositions. I used to read Jane Austen, Enid Blyton and Roald Dahl...nowadays I prefer to read about the Chinese Revolution....WW2...stuff like that.....
I will like to recommend a personal favourite which is Angela Ashes by Frank McCourt. The book it's about the author's life...on how he was a poor Irish-American living in the lanes of Limerick.
Happy reading!

i read the handmaid's tale for english last year, i found that so boring. but once we had to analyse it and stuff, it was okay i *guess*. at first, it just doesn't really seem to make sense and i didn't know what the hell it was going on about.
one of my fave books is Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah. It's a true story and it's really sad =( it's about a little Chinese girl [the author]growing up during the war and she's unloved and unwanted. it's pretty much a straightforward book
i wanna read lord of the rings when i can be bothered

I usually indulge myself in trashy fantasy novels that never end [I've read em all-- Tolkien,Terry Goodkind, Terry Brooks, David Eddings, Robert Jordan, the list goes on forever], but I think listing those would be kinda pointless. I used to have a niche for negative utopian novels [ya i'm in the pessimistic, depressing Silence Alliance so what haha] like 1984, Fahrenheit 451, A Brave New World, and the No Exit plays.
Right now, I am reading This Side of Paradise by F.Scott Fitzgerald because I just finished reading The Great Gatsby in english class. It surely beats reading Faulkner... god I hate that guy ^_^.

I'm now reading "The Philosophy of Andy Warhol"by Andy Warhol because I have a sudden interest in taking art and he's one of the quirkier artist in recent history. The book is really witty, something really rare for an autobiographical.
My fave lines:
"Looking at store windows is great entertainment because you can see all these things and be really glad it's not home filling up your closets and drawers."
"I love Los Angeles. I love Hollywood. They're beautiful. Everybody's plastic, but I love plastic. I want to be plastic."
"The interviewer should just tell me the words he wants me to say and I'll repeat them after him."
Lotus:
"The Great Gatsby" is lovely. I admire the way that Gatsby goes all out in his quest for wealth and the love of his life. Not the ending though. Do let me know if "This Side of Paradise" is as good.

03-30-2003, 07:21 PM
well i'm reading it through right now, and it's different. I think the Great Gatsby has something enchanting about it. I just fall in love with all of Gatsby's romantic hope, his devotion. Daisy and Tom, don't get me started... I hate those careless people. Just too cruel. I won't say anymore as not to spoil the ending for anyone who hasn't read it. But I don't know the protagonist of This Side of Paradise, Amory, while he is above everythng human, there is an undertone to him that annoys me soooo much. I don't admire him at all, but he's like that annoying, smart kid in your class that once in a while has to take a hit to his ego and you see just how human everyone is. Well Amory is a stuck up, prep school kid with good looks, so take it from there... Gatsby was always shrouded in mystery, and he had such humility and care. I'll finish the book and then let you know ^_^.
i've finished the Interview, and i'm now going through The Vampire Lestat. it's captivating, i'll tell you guys that. for those who havent read yet the Vampire Chronicles, its really good especially if you like supernatural stuff. these vampires are just too romantically described. :sigh:. :D
does anybody remember the Love Stories series?

yes they were good! haha my favourite one was my best friend's girlfriend by wendy loggia. I read that like 5 or 6 years ago though, but I remember I really liked that one. Before them, I read the series Sweet Dreams.. that was a love stories series as well but the books were simpler and shorter.
i still like reading a lot of childish books.. haha.
i loved those short paperbacks! i always look first in the kid's section in the bookstore. :D. remember Sweet Valley? i have loads of them.
i think i read my best friend's girlfriend too. it was gooood. too bad the later ones werent as good as the earlier ones, and i've stopped reading them.

Speaking of Jane Eyre, I'm reading this new book called "The Eyre Affair" by Jaspar Fforde. It seems rather interesting, shall review when done.

Thank you so much. I was so influenced by your review of "The Great Gatbsy" that I went and read it again. And I still love it. I agree with you that Daisy and Tom were utterly heartless. Arrgh. It helps too when the main character and one of my fave singers share the same first name. Ah, Jay
Anyway, I got "This Side of Paradise" at the same time and I think that Blaine is rather detestable. But I hated Holden Caulfield at first too, so I shall give him another chance. Ah, shall go back to my reading now.

i liked Angeles Ashes for the first half of the book, but after that it just repeats itself, how impoverished the McCourts were, how terrible the living conditions were then...I dont know, i just got bored of it i guess.
and Jane Eyre, my compulsory text for English at A levels. *shudders* there was no possibility of taking a walk that day. (something like that?) it was way too long for me, and the style of writing takes alot of getting used to :squint: and i never got to the end of the story, even when i took my A level papers :shifty:

myo_infarc:
No problem. I did read it quite a while ago really, so my review might be a little off. Here goes:
First off, it has a rather gory premise of the rape and murder of a young girl, Susie (probably inspired by the author's own experiences?). She's the narrator of the story, and she was already dead at the beginning of the story. She's in heaven, and her version of heaven is a setting somewhat resembling her school, only they read fashion mags there. There's even counsellors to help them adjust to the new place.
But Susie can't let go. From heaven, she examines how her family, friends and the killer go about their daily duties. Because her body is never found, Susie watches her family go through emotions ranging from hope to despair before finally coming to terms with her death. She also describes how her killer tries to cover his tracks and resume his droll demeanor as a normal guy from a normal neighbourhood.
You'll have to read the book yourself to find out what happens in the end. From a tragic opening, the author manages to convey some hope and humour. The end result is rather bittersweet. Highly recommended!!

i think i had not been touching a proper storybook for a few months, still remembered the time when i was in Primary School, i am always busy reading all those classics to do book reviews to impressed my teachers(of cos the abridged versions) and in Secondary School, i was crazy over Danielle Steel's books.
Eversince going into college, i stopped reading English books and picked up Chinese novels instead. I like Zhang Xiao Xian;s books and after my exams next month, i am going to get a couple of her new books. Strongly recommend her books to all those who can read Chinese out there.
As for now, me had been reading my own textbooks but dun seems to be making much progress. Haha.. inching at a few pages per day....

I'm reading Prey by Michael Crichton and Perfect Match by Jodi Picoult.
Prey is about some science experiment (nanotchnolgy) thingy. His books are usually quite disturbing as they touch on science developing way faster than our brain cells can grasp. The book's a bit too technical though, so it's been a slow read for me.
Perfect Match is about a couple dealing with the fact that their 5 year old son was sexually abused. Totally heart-wrenching. Had to secretly wipe my tears on the train today and I'm only at chapter 2! looks like i'm going to lose lots more saltwater...
I totally recommend Jodi Picoult's Harvesting the Heart if you like the family story type. Love Story by Erich Seagal is also a great book.
Eh...I also recommend Jeffrey Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme series. It's a thriller series about this quadriplegic criminalist. really good, especially the latest one, The Vanished Man.

for more advanced readers, crime and punishment by dostoevsky is excellent! if u have ever wanted a book that really paints a picture of humanity, this is the book.
it explores the human soul, the good and the evil, and the mind of a criminal....and his beautiful, humanistic side... it is suspenseful, romantic, exciting!
crime and punishment has themes of love, morality, family, self awareness, repentance in it...it is beautiful! so descriptive and it is my FAVOURITE BOOK Of all times.
for readers who want to be entertained, all gordon korman novels are excellent. he is a canadian author who writes humourous novels.... they always make me laugh out loud even tho i've read them many times already :)
lastly, i recommend little prince (esp the original french version) moving, touching, makes u reflect on what really is important in life

Right now, I'm reading this novel 'Jane Eyre' by Charlotte Bronte for my English course. It's supposed to be, quote, "the BEST love story ever" and the "classic of classics" according to my English marker.
I'm always up for a good romance, but 10 pages later, I'm beginning to seriously doubt my choice, becuase it's taking me like, 5 minutes to read one page... I have to read each sentence over at least a second time to fully grasp the meaning... Darn those 1800's authors.
Is that sad, or does Bronte give anyone else a migrain?
Oh well... I'll just swim through it, and maybe survive just to look back and see that I actually enjoyed it! :D

Hey to all:
Just wondering if anybody here loves reading autobiographies. Personally i really loves reading autobiographies. I am currently reading the Robbie Williams one, which is quite good. Anybody have the same thoughts??

How did I miss this thread?!
I liked the Lovely Bones, but I was thoroughly disturbed afterwards. I scare easily and she the little girl's mruder could have really happened, I was just bothered.
I'm a big Jane Austen geek too.:) The A&E version of Pride and Prejudice was awesome. Last year, I read a book called Pride, Prejudice, and Jasmine Field. It was great! The premise is that this famous actor is trying to get this other celebrities to participate in a theatrical stage version of P&P for charity. The lead ends up going to Jasmine Field who is a writer...elements of the original story are weaved all around. There's also a great fight scene to corrolates with the scene where Darcy tells Elizabeth that he likes her but she's beneath him.:D
I'm currently reading Cotillion by Georgette Heyer who is a Regency Romance writer and was really historically accurate. She's like Jane Austen...only more funny.:D Convenient Marriage was great.
Shopaholic...a read for all girls.:D The first was too much like Bridget Jones but the second made up for it.
Megan Cabot...wrote Princess Diaries and actually recently published her first non-kiddie book..The Guy Next Door...it was cute and pretty funny. The whole book is written in email format which was kinda cool.
*whew!*
i love Meg Cabot's novels. though i usually find them in the kid's section, there's nothing childish about them, coz i'm 16 and there are so many instances that i can relate with. the Guy Next Door should be a great read

right now, i'm reading the chinese translation of a korean book... i think it's based on a korean drama (or the other way round, i'm not sure)... winter sonata? :? dunno... however, it's called "lan se sheng si lian". very very sad. :( um, and other than that... a german novel, and in english it's "villette" by charlotte bronte right now.

shopaholic.. i got the book when it first came out and recommended it to all the girls.
isn't it sad? or is isn't it scary? the main character is quite like me, except i don't have money problems. but i'm quite the shopping fiend. :p
i would like to have some good reads, i read all genres except for autobiographies/biographies. =P just can't bring myself to em.
a few days ago i was feeling bored and sorta felt like reading but didn't have anything i want to read.

Shopaholic eh. I'll have an uncontrollable urge to go shopping even reading about shopping. In fact, I shopped myself so broke I even decided to pick on html skills an built myself an pan-handling site a la Karyn. But just looking at the content page of the "Html for Dummies" alone is enough to make me comatose.
Back on track, you must read Wiseguy, by Nicholas Pileggi. It's a terrific book which has been made into an even more terrific movie. Now, does anyone know if "Reservior Dogs" was ever published?

yep shopaholic.
i skipped class yesterday to go shopping.
in the course of 2 days i spent over USD$200.
and it's only wednesday too.
did i mention i don't work either? lol
but i want the new pink coach bags... gonna get me one and a bag from either coach or dooney and burke for my mom for mother's day. if i get myself a coach bag and nothing for her she will get pissed. and so i'm forced to buy her one.
darn her! she doesn't like to spend too much money on things, but i guess if the money is spent for *her* then it's "ok". -_____-;;
right-o, back on track. could you tell me what "wiseguy" is about please? thanx.
satanrina
05-01-2003, 09:48 AM
Pink coach bags, I think I know which ones you're talking about. That's the extent of my shopaholic madness. I try to lock myself in but I will end up shopping online instead. Argghs. And I don't have a proper job either.
Anyways, I forgot to mention the "Wiseguy" was made into "Goodfellas".
You. have. to. watch. the. movie.

05-01-2003, 09:59 AM
yes! the pink coach bags! tres cute right? they're sold out at the coach store near where i live. what a poo. so i'll have to hit the malls =T
you know, it's so annoying how people that work in the stores judge you by the way you dress and stuff. i encountered a lot of that while shopping last night.
i didn't want to be dressed too nice since i was supposed to be in class.. so i just wore whatevers.
i walk into BCBG and the girls at the counter just looked at us and looked away and continued their convo. no "hi~~ how are you doing?" or whatever. none of that. they continue to ignore our existence (my friend and I) until i started taking things off the racks. THEn they come over and ask if i needed a room. and being annoyed at their snotty behavior i just bought said "No, I don't need to try these on. I'll just take em". well, i don't usually like to try on clothes anyway but i felt like acting like a snob since i felt they were rude.
you still haven't told me what "wiseguy" is about. err but im guessing it has to do with gangsters?
satanrina
05-01-2003, 10:11 AM
Yup, they are. I saw them on mags and online but they're not out in Singapore yet. Which is lucky, because I'll go on to something newer by the time they're so so I won't get them. I have to control my buying habit.
Salesppl everywhere are like that. Especially if they are girls. I just try not to buy from them so they don't get the comission. Speaking of BCBG, I just got a lovely wrap dress, too expensive so now I'm in denial.
On to "Wiseguys", it's about gangsters yes. But it's really funny too. Sorta like a modern take on "Godfather". It's written in dialouge, so the book is pretty short, like a screenplay. It's basically about the life of Henry Hill, from the time he was young and wanted to join the mafia, to the time he ended up in police protection towards the end of his mafia career. Even if you don't read the book, you must get the movie. Must. I got the dvd a few years back and it's one of the movies I watch and watch again.

how does your dress look like? I saw a nice, pale yellow dress at BCBG too. With some embroidery on the front, just a bit of beads and stuff. Very cute but I didn't bother to try it on because I don't wear dresses too often.
Ah... "Godfather" I just finished watching that in my classic film class and we started "The Godfather II" today. Very cool.
Maybe I'll just watch the movie. :p

Maggie:
I don't wear dresses that much either but I cannot resist anything with the word "wrap" and "black" in it. It's sorta like those DVF wrap dress but with lace in the midriff so it likes somewhat like an obi. I have a tendency to get excited when I hear "embriodery", "beads" and "cute" together too.
I feel guilty gushing about clothes in here so here's my book of the day:
"Life of Pi" by Yann Martel
I haven't read it yet, but it got the Booker Prize for 2002 so I'm guessing it's pretty good.

tuesdays with morries by mitch albom
i find it a very touching book, but it is also one about the lessons of life. it's a real story about this professor who found out he had a disease which would leave him dying slowly, so he spent his time meaningfully and had lessons with an old student of his about lessons of life. he wanted the student to publish a book about the perspective of life from someone about to die, so as to encourage people.
this is my all-time favourite, and i've cried numerous times whilst reading it. i don't think i've brought out the essence of the book with my lousy description, but i really recommend it... please give it a try

i just finished "Every Dead Thing" by John Connelly, feeling very relieved to return to the world of fiction after 15 gruelling weeks of textbooks. I just decided that I like reading thrillers best, because i like reading about psycho killers, so that i know what's going on in their minds should i ever meet one.
anyway, the book was an excellent one, with very vivid descriptions about mutiliations of varying degrees. but the storyline is rather cliched, along the same lines as "Messiah" by Boris Starling and the movie "Seven". any fellow psychological thriller fans around here, with good books to recommend??

ugh wldn't be as fun as u prob pictured in ur mind!! v. dull and boring, bad weather...god i cld go on forever. but as surprising as it is to me there are other ppl who love it here! tho if i were u, i wld choose japan!!

really? Well, maybe you're just immune to the charms cause you live there. Japan was a lot of fun! I did a lot of shopping and we were there with my bf's best friend who is Japanese....and who's family still lives in Japan and happens to be rich! I had a really good time and we went to lots of places and it was good to be a non-touristy tourist.
gah! am so jealous. saw all those pretty places on telly but it's sooooo far away!!! but must get out of sweden this summer.
i guess when u live here, u get past all the touristy views, but the weather is so depressing. all foggy and rainy. we need the sun!

:excited: I am reading Tolkien's Unfinished Tales right now. It has information on the history or some events that aren't told in detail in the three volumes of LOTR. Plus it is very thick.
Have anyone read the Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux?
Great book. :excited:
Another book Phantom by Susan Kay. The story of the phantom right from his birth.
Oh right! You guys have the summers when the sun doesn't set right? Or something like that. I didn't know it was foggy and rainy over there! Hm...don't recall them ever telling me that.
lol yeah maybe up in the north! i remember going up to the tip of norway or something and seeing the 'sun that never sets' it just stays bright all day, but only for like one or two days in a row.
am v. happy rite now cuz finally we got some good weather! it's sunny :D. so depressing whne ur stuck in the house and got nothing to do when it's pouring outside. hows the weather where ur at?
rojak: i think i remember reading the phantom of the opera. i thought it was realy creepy, but i guess it was too deep of a book for me to read then. it was ages ago like 3rd grade or something. actually when i come to think of it, it prob was abridged!!

05-08-2003, 11:03 AM
:) It was a little creepy. You should read the original version. It is very exiciting, i remember i was glued to the book because i wanted to know the ending. However, none of the movies that were based on the book was true to the original story, sigh.

Phantom of the Opera is a lovely, lovely, lovely play!
Andrew Lloyd Webber made it even more memorable when he made the scores so beautiful. Whenever I travel long distances in the car, I'd play the CD over and over again.
but i haven't read the original book yet. must go hunt for it. thanks for providing the author's name rojak.
hey has anyone read amy tans books?? thay're all about chinese immigrants in the 40s who moved to san fransisco. it's really funny and something asians can relate to. also surprisingly educational in a sense as well! they're so much fun.

I've finished LOTR and I think the Terry Pratchet Discworld series is so funny and it's a good read if you can't really get into the hard dark fantasy kinda stuff. Stardust by Neil Gaiman. I'm a BIG fantasy lit. fan. The Phantom Tollbooth, KLue (local mag), and Jay Chou lyrics and translations.
has anybody read Wild Swans by Jung Chang?
It's about the life of three Chinese women from different generations. A really good read. An oldie but a goody.

Currently reading The Villa by Nora Roberts. I know romance novels aren't exactly the greatest, but I take exception for this one. It's really quite interesting...
As for recommendations, I'd say the His Dark Materials series. It's one of my favorite series. The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass are the titles of the books in that series. A very good trilogy. It's the kind of book that makes you think.
Other recommendation would be Farenheit 451 (I think I screwed up the spelling...). The book isn't exactly scary, but I got so freaked out when I read it. The realization that life could be like that scared me half to death.

I've read the Amy Tan books. They're good, but not really my kinda thing. I loved the Phantom Tollbooth however! And I've read the His Dark Materials series as well, they were pretty good even though I don't really like sci-fi.
I do recommend The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke, and if you're interested in children's books, the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer.
has anybody read Wild Swans by Jung Chang?
It's about the life of three Chinese women from different generations. A really good read. An oldie but a goody.
oh it took me ages to finish that! all bout the cultural revolution and stuff, gives a more clear picture of wat happened. but it probably is biased and blown out of proportion. tho still a good book i must say, v. well written. but i like the beginning more when they were talkin bout the grandma and the mom.
have u read 'to the edge of the sky' its 'tian bian' in chinese? also similar to wild swans, an autobiography. but it's completely bleurgh. i started to hate the author cuz she was so cruel to her sister and then it seemed like everything he talked about was just crap.
has anyone read 'holes'? i loved it. and they're making a movie out of it!! ahhh am so excited, must see it. but am not sure if it'll be any good.

Yeah i liked the beginning of Jung Chang too. My mom bought it for me when I was 12 and I could NOT put it down it was such a struggle for them back then. Even if it was biased (as all autobiographies are) the struggles must have been real and tragic.
No I haven't read 'to the edge of the sky'. I can't read chinese tho'. And what's 'holes' all about?

and the cinema version has been softened (parts on lesbians, bisexuals, childhood abused etc)

LORD OF THE RINGS!!!!! for the 3rd time actually...simply cannot wait for THE RETURN OF THE KING to come out in the cinemas...anybody a LOTR fan?
*raises hand and waves frantically* Yep right here! I loved reading LOTR(2nd time) and The Hobbit, that was really good. I can't wait for ROTK either. Anybody read Diana Wynn Jones books? I liked her sort of children/young adult books. Especially love her book covers. I admit I'm one of those people who judges a book by it's cover. Literally! Then I'll read the summary...and if I like what I read then I'll get it. Her stories have a sort of detachment from reality but at the same time her characters, through their emotions and actions are very human. Sort of real and unreal at the same time. I don't really know how to explain...*work brain work!*

Trashy romance novels? :glug: How are they like?
Currently reading Message In A Bottle by Nicholas Sparks. I like him as an author but this book, in my opinion, is poorly written. It doesn't flow very well as in the sentence structures don't link together as one piece and I can't feel what the characters in there are feeling. Kind of a cold story in that sense, if you know what I mean.

Yeah I think I've read quite a few of those...I'm not sure how to explain what they are.
I think It's a kind of romance novel thats people usually don't read again after reading it once they have explicit details of lovemaking and cheesy dialogues between the hero and heroine. Correct me if I'm wrong here.
Currently reading Adeline Yen Mah's Falling Leaves pretty heart wrenching. But not as good as Yung Chang's Wild Swans. Probably cause her writing style is too factual and practical for my taste. But still very good.

ok, i need some help here, guys. Has anybody read Anne Rice's Memnoch the Devil? It explores this idea that Satan is not really evil bad, he just prefers indulgence in the flesh to suffering, any kind of suffering. The book portrays God as a wrathful one, who sees suffering as the only way to enlightenment (correct me if I got it wrong, but that's the impression i got). I accepted all this, its fiction after all, but in the end where Lestat suddenly went ballastic, I totally lost it. Can anybody enlighten me?

The Blind Assassin by Margret Atwood.
its a good book but it make me think too hard. its a a novel within a novel within a novel. 3 stories. no, its not subplots. its acutal novels. and Atwood is known for her cynical view of the males in the worlds. she lightens up a little. just a little.
i lovebridget jones' diary 1 and 2
but i realized (at 3 am last week) that #1 is a remake of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensiblity

:bounce: yeah, yeah!!! me!!! i was looking for falling leaves at the library but the copies were all out on loan! how was it???
i'm really into historical non fiction right now, esp biographies, they're so interesting! i'm most into WW2 non fiction....prolly the only modern history that i'm interested in, coz i'm more of an ancient historian.
currently i'm reading a bio called Diary of a Girl in Changi by Sheila Allan. it's basically a collection of a teenager's (now an elderly woman) diary entries during WW2, and what happened to her when she was interned in Changi when the Japanese took over. quite an interesting read for anybody who wants to know more about the war and the situation in malaysia and s'pore.
another war book (fiction) i want to recommend is Snow Falling on Cedars er...can't remem the author, but most ppl should know it by the film that was made about it, a few years ago. based in the states, about a Japanese girl and an Amercan boy who grew up together in a small town, and how they had to face the pressures of not being able to let their families know about their feelings for each other, coz of the war.

Ive got Falling Leaves..and Chinese Cinderella, the version that focuses on her childhood. Both very good....Adeline Mah's third book is called 'Watching a tree (to catch a hare)' and its mostly about the customs in China. So its more facts than a story..but its quite interesting.
And if you like non-fictional chinese historical books (however you put it!), the Heavenly Man is great too. Although its about Christianity, there is quite a lot on the history and what people had to go through to have freedom in religion in China.

I just finished up reading "Bravo Zero Two" which is a book about what the British Special Forces (specifically the SAS) did in Desert Storm. It's a pretty crazy book and makes you feel that no matter what type of hardships you are going through, they will most likely never be as tough mentally and physically as what the author (Andy McNab) went through.
For those of you that like war books, try reading "One Shot-One Kill." It's about a sniper(Carlos Hatchcock) and his exploits in the Vietnam War.
For the older crowd who are interested in money management and investing, "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" was an excellent book.
"The Count of Monte Cristo" was a good book as well, even though it's really really long.

i've read a few of his books, like "the alchemist", the pilgrimage" etc. i find him feel good, if you know what i mean.

Just read I Don't Know How She Does It
by Allison Pearson
It's tragically funny reading how a working mother in the beginning of the 21st century struggle to juggle between work (one of the most demanding i can imagine) and 2kids+hubby.
A must-read esp for working mothers, working mothers-to-be

im currently reading 'please'. its...well...confusing and have a lot to do with pyschology and self-discovering and hallucinations all twisted into one book. im not sure where the setting is, since the main character is hallucinating every two seconds, so im not so sure whats real or not anymore. its interesting nevertheless.

I'm reading The Lost World by Michael Crichton.
Just read for my English class. I think it's more descriptive than the movie..and I have a lot of fun by my imagination. :yeah:
Apart from that .. there are tons of Law text books waiting for me to read for the final exam. Wish me luck. It's so difficult especially Obligation and Effect . I really hate it.
Also many articles to memorize.I wish I had Doraemon to help me. :bleh:

Finished: Tuesday With Morrie by Mitchell Albom.
VERY good and touching book about the important lessons on life that most of us miss.
Reading: A Bend In The Road by Nicholas Sparks.
So far it's pretty boring. The only book of his I like is A Walk to Remember.
About to Read: Sense & Sensibility by Jane Austen.
Heard it was really good and excited to start reading it.

At the moment I've just finished re-reading 'The Giver', I actually read this book in Yr 8 and loved, it was the first time I actually enjoyed a book that I had to read for English. It showed what kind of world we could possibly live in in the future.
I highly recommend it, I can't remeber who the author is at the moment though.

yes I have, by Dave Pelzer. I had to put off reading "A Child Called It" a couple of times, because the tortures described were too horrifying to bear. Honestly, I can't imagine how it's only the third most serious documented case of child abuse in the US. Havent read "A Man Called Dave" though.

itīs funny how we usually link poverty and hunger to africa or some third world countries. never knew that ireland has been that poor....

Right now I'm reading V.C. Andrews' Midnight Flight. I love all her books. Most of them are disturbing! You gotta read them to know what I mean. Anyhow, she's one of my favorite writers. Actually, she's already passed away, but her family found a lot of her unpublished work, so there are still "new" books from her.

right now i'm a bit crazy. i've been suffering from reading-for-leisure withdrawal for a long time, coz ever since i started and finished uni and then started working, i've never had time to read. so now i'm trying to read 3 books at the same time, just to make up a bit for the time lost.
Interview with the Vampire, by Anne Rice - i love gothic type novels, and vampires and the supernatural really intrigue me. i plan to rent the film after i finish reading it.
The Partner, by John Grisham - i've never read Grisham books b4 and thought i'd give it a try. it's great! the first line i read captivated me instantly!
The Return of the King, by the legendary JRR Tolkien - reading this one again, just to remind myself of the details b4 the film comes out. :)
i love reading.... :excited:

I just finished reading The Da Vinci Code. It was AMAZING. It's seriously the best book I've read (and that includes Harry Potter, which I was pretty obsessed with). Dan Brown is an absolute genius. He makes you think one thing, and then something completely different happens. There are so many twists and turns in this book, and I love how it made me think a lot. At the beginning of the book, I thought one way about a character, and by the end, my opinion was the opposite. I recommend that ALL of you read it! HOWEVER... If you're very religious, I'm not quite sure how you would view this book. Just a precaution.

OMG :excited: i read that book over the summer! it really IS a great book. i recommend it! and it opened up alot of questions about religion i never thought of before. the plot was really good. definately one of the best books i've ever read.
currently reading "the Power of Myth" for school. Joseph Campbell has many opnions about myth and the effects that it has on the modern society. he talks about religion also. i find that he has a better grasp on religion than many others. his comments are not as biased.

Hes called Phillip Pullman...my little brother and sister are absolutely obsessed with his series. Ive never actually tried reading them but they keep telling me too.
At the moment im reading a couple of books. Im re-reading one called The Heavenly Man which is about a chinese Christian living in China when Christianity was not allowed. Im re-reading it to highlight important verses which come up frequently. I was absolutely awe-struck by the blessings and the events which occured in the book. Another is abouut the role of Christian Women in the plan of God...its amazing as im learning stuff which i would have never known..like how women are part of the Devils downfall...amazing book if you are a Christian.
I really enjoy books, fact or fictional, about chinese history or Christianity...really interesting to learn more about my roots and my religion... :D

I'm reading 'Schindler's Ark' by Thomas Keneally.
A true story of a man called Herr Oskar Schindler who lived in the period of the Nazi occupation in Poland. It is brought to the golden-screen by Steven Spielberg into an Oscar-winning film, 'Schindler's List'.
If you like history and know/learn history of that period, you won't get confused by the names of famous Nazi figures and the list of SS Army Ranks. And you'll enjoy it so much. :wink2:
