The forums aren't at 100%, there are little bugs here and there, and I'm counting on you guys to tell me what they are.
And be honest, if there's a forum you're NOT suppose to see, let me know about it :shifty: . I checked, double checked and triple checked permissions, but it's likely I missed something.
* Also let me know if you can't post or reply in a forum when you feel you should.
* And I'm working on getting the display Usergroups under your avatar, plus other little things we use to have.
* Note: The Jay Videos & Jay Music for Download group members are in limbo right now. I'm trying to figure out what to do with them.
* Remember to check the User CP and update your profile (birthday, timezone, your avatar may need to be re-uploaded, turn off/on invisible mode, etc.)
* Can't figure out how to edit, delete, use BB code? Whatever your problem, post here.

OK I'm just gonna answer questions people pose in various forums/thru PM here so everyone hears it.
1. I've changed the avatar upload limit from 12bytes to 12 KB like before
2. Your user ranks will probably not be back, the importer didn't import them properly, and I'm not too thrilled about adding 100+ ranks back in manually.
3. The reputation button http://www.jay-chou.net/forums/styles/jcnet-default/buttons/reputation.gif allows you to add reputation to a user. I'm still sketchy about how it all works. But basically, you can add reputation if you feel the person deserves it (they posted something good, provided you a download, etc.)
Some may have heard of this in the form of karma...it's sorta similar. Except not just mods get to add to your rep, but regular members can too.
NOTE: Double posting is still against the rules. Except in justifiable cases such as this. I'm working on getting the anti-double posting functionality back.

hello?
I'm worried no one can see / read / reply to this forum as the views on this post still say 2.
Just post and let me know you can see this. Preferably a non-Mod member.
NOTE: Triple posting is definitely a no-no. Don't follow my example.

Karen, i can read and reply in this thread.
still getting myself familiar with the new forum.
i haven't noticed any threads i shouldn't be able to view
thanx for explaining reputation button, i was wondering what it is
aww karen you are the best. can i give you 200 reputations? :) JKJK~ i heard of karma's on solid, but reputation stuff must be a lot easier to get. On SS (Shinhwa Sarang forums) they have a token system (its tough...i got 2 though ^^). this is pretty interesting.

Reputation thing, still confuses me. You just have to click on it and it will do? :?
Anyway, karen, can we request for a forum JumpBox, if it's not much of a hassle.
Thanks.
jayx8318x
05-13-2004, 07:12 AM
Kahel > jumpbox is on the bottom of every page, can you see it?
You can also take away reputation. If you click on it for a person, a box pops up asking if you want to take away or add, and leave a reason (at least this is what I see as an admin, maybe you guys see something different?)

hmmm thanks for clearing up the 'reputation' question and fixing up the avatar size limit...
as for the user ranks... mmm... is it possible for us to customise our own ranks then?? like say... after we've reached a certain number of posts we can just rank ourselves watever we like?? :?
jayx8318x
05-13-2004, 07:14 AM
sagara0510 > When you go to User CP and Edit Profile, is there an option for custom title? I know mods can, I don't remember if everyone else can. If not, I'll set it for group members to be able to use custom titles.
sagara0510
05-13-2004, 07:18 AM
i just checked... there isn't an option for regular users to have a custom title.. i guess it needs to be enabled before every1 can access that option...
wow so we can customize our own ranks later!? ooh.. :shifty: i wonder what i will use...
i can see the forum jump box, and yes~i can take away reputations and add them and everything ^^ so i guess its the same for everyone.

hmmm.... dun wanna seem like a pest but... just wondering is there anyway to remove the hyperlinks from our sigs etc??
kahel
05-13-2004, 07:25 AM
oh, thanks for clearing that up Karen. This forum has a lot of added features, it takes some getting used too. Overall, it's great. :D
Just my two cents about the customizable ranks, if users get to customize their ranks instead of the diao ranks that you have setup, then wouldn't that somewhat defeat the custom ranks the mods give certain users? Customizable ranks means a lot of varieties. It could create a some kind of confusion.
I'm just so loyal with the ranks that we currently have. I really love the creativity behind it. :wink2:
jayx8318x
05-13-2004, 07:28 AM
sagara > Not sure what you mean? The hyperlinks in your sigs are there because you put them there using the [URL] tag and adding the actually http:// address. Do you mean how it's underlined? You can't change that yourself. I'll have to dig thru the CSS file to see where it's located and change it..maybe when I have time.
sagara0510
05-13-2004, 07:29 AM
mmm r u refering to the ranks we had on the old forum kahel?? or the 'gold, silver, bronze' member ones we have atm??
i agree that customizable ranks will lead to lots of varieties... but at least it will look abit more pleasant than what we have atm??
EDIT: karen yeah i just mean the underline under the hyperlinks... its no biggie... just a personal preference i have i suppose... i've never been a big fan of the underline... anyway i'm sure there are other more important things u need to take care of first so its no biggie
kahel
05-13-2004, 07:32 AM
I was referring to the old forum, jason. Don't worry. The old ranks which will be imported here soon, I really love them. :wink2:

Just want to ask about the buddy and ignore list, because i tried adding some names to the buddy list. The FAQ says go to "My vB Home", does it mean the User CP or the forum main page?
Oh yes, and when i hover the mouse pointer over a thread title, it displays the first post. It is possible to change it to view the last post instead?

The UserCP...just about every option you have is under User CP.
The option you're looking for is near the bottom of the page under "Miscellaneous" in the User CP.
it doesnt say that for me :? it just adds you to the list 0_o...atleast when i tried to do it.

The quick reply box doesn't really work for me. At least not like it used to. When I try to click on it, nothing happens. When I try to click on the B, I, or U, a box pops up and asks me to click on one of the buttons above (as in the "post reply" one).
Also, if we can all customize our ranks, won't the nOObs be able to award themselves the "administrator" title then? :?

oh ok, I didn't even know about that buddy list, I'm learning along with the rest of you guys . There are so many options. I kinda miss the simplicity of phpBB.
Anyways, I'll add the "preview last post on mouse hover" to my to-do list, I liked it better that way too.
vunsin: oh it took me a while to figure that out too. you just have to click that button with the paper and the arrow. right next to the quote button of someone who already posted.

vunsin, like ray-chan said, you need to click on the http://www.jay-chou.net/forums/styles/jcnet-default/buttons/quickreply.gif button on the bottom of someone's post so the system knows who you're replying to and can quote them if you enable the check box.

We can disallow certain ranks.

I know... Karen, but I was just saying that it was one step more than before. I'm just lazy. Gosh... there's so much for me to figure out. I think I'll leave that for later as I'm getting a really bad headache from my cold. I should go to bed and leave nOOb-busting for tomorrow.

hmm I see...I could set it to where the QR box is activated all the time. But I actually like it this way, cuz sometimes I do want to quote a certain person who responded, and not always just last person like what we had on phpBB.

I thought we could quote anybody on phpBB? :? I know I've definitely done that before. :hmm:
jayx8318x

Is there a way to make the, "Sticky" notice more obvious and clear? The titles of just regular threads are bolded and much more "black" if they are unread.
That's the only thing I've noticed so far.. I love the new look. Probably because I've used vB at all other forums I've been to.
I need a bit of help with something... before, even if our avies exceeded 12 KB we could still upload them, right? Can't we do the same here? I tried to change my avie by entering the url (from photobucket) on the blank space for uploading avies but it says that it's more than 12 KB so I'm guessing that the avies uploaded here are saved in our own server? Can't we upload bigger-sized avies that are saved in other servers? pls enlighten me. thanks!

Hey guys!
I am glad the forum is back in the new home...... I am not sure if it is my setting, but I noticed that the layout of the forum is kinda narrow, with quite a bit of spcaing on both sides of the board. Thought we should try to utilise the page as much as possible, so that our posts wouldn't look so long and narrow... saves the scrolling also :wink2:
BTW, the gender indication would be good.... too many people think Mac means I am male!!!!
Oh, did I tell you, I love the new layout??? I am still trying to navigate around, but I amd sure I'll make it

still need to click the posts above..
maybe can skip the step!!
and maybe could indicate the group of the members so that we don't need to go to the profile in order to see the groups..
and i miss the old forum where we can see the news once we enter the site..
i think that is a really good feature..
and why is there a 60s before we can search again?? :?

this new forum is nice...
just not use to it...
we will use to it soon ,right...???
many new features it cool
i miss karen's rank .... we only can found it on this forum..

There's a pic of a pushpin to the right of them, I'll see what I can do...
and posting quick reply is so troublesome..
The added step has been removed
and why is there a 60s before we can search again??
Because searching is VERY server intensive especially with a large board.
I wanted to increase that even more...but 60 will do for now.

You need to specify your gender, go to:

It's near the bottom under Additional Information section

Try going to Tools > Internet Options..
Under the Temporary Internet Files square, click, Settings.
For check for newer versions of saved pages, select, "Every Visit To the Page."
That way, when you click something, it'll always load up the page from the net instead of from the cache saved on your hard drive... While you're in the check for newer etc.. you might want to reduce your cache to a size like 50-100mb since you're refreshin everytime you're clicking now.

Okay... I just found a new problem. I think all links to briefcases will have to be reposted. Apparently when the threads were transferred over, parts of those links were converted into some weird symbols so the links no longer work. When you click on those links, you'll still go to that briefcase, but it'll say the folder is empty because you don't have access to other parts of that briefcase. So... we'll have to recopy-and-paste all those briefcase links for downloads.

wow that really sucks.
I'll edit some posts then. Just a tip to the mods if you're not doing this already, just copy and paste the entire contents of a post into notepad or something, then do a Find & replace to replace all & with &, then copy and paste it back to post. You don't have to actually email the Briefcase links to yourself or anything.

Just a suggestion for aesthetics:
The "new post" icon is too similar to the "no new posts" icon.
What I mean is, in a forum, when a thread has new posts you havent' read, there's a little icon displayed beside it.I know, you can tell the difference many ways, including bolded topic text, but here are some suggestions...
New posts: Keep same as now.
No new posts: dim it... make it look as "faded" as the "post reply" button in threads.
Hot thread with new posts: Keep same.
Hot thread with no new posts: Right now, it's the exact same icon as the "hot/new posts" one. I'm guessing that that was a mistake during setup. Also, dim that one so it's easier to differentiate.

Hmm.... I noticed whern I try to quote Karen's previous mails, which already contained quotes, the quotes she quoted did not appear in my reply window. What I got was a truncated quote, which contained the last few sentences of the post.
Which brings me to what I wanted to post here initially..... the option for gender
This is your gender, you're either male or female 99% of the time.
Hmm..... now that is a difficult choice..hmm.... 99% of the time? what if I am a female 98% of the time?

This new format is definitley very different but I'll get used to it sooner or later.

Viv, smilepiggy, perhaps you would like to go to the "low down on reputation points" thread that karen put up to find out more about it:

I guess it's neater and easier if you ask your questions there as well under the same topic.

i just found out something from vunsin that i think members should take note of. right now in your User CP, the default forum setting for viewing threads is only allowing ACTIVE threads from the last 3-4 weeks to be displayed. so, you are probably not viewing ALL the threads in the forums if you haven't changed your settings. to prevent repeated threads from being started, please change your settings!
to do so, go to:
User CP > Edit Options > scroll down to the Thread Display Options section > Default Thread Age Cut Off (last item of section) > select Show All Threads from the drop-down menu
and then you should see ALL the threads around the forums. :D

Did you change the forum default to "show all threads" yet? :D

05-16-2004, 06:16 PM
Erm, is it possible to "prolong" the time frame for the "time-out"?
Okay, this is my problem in short: when I come into the forum, there are some threads that I frequent first (eg my groups private forum thread), and I have a tendancy to type somewhat long replies, and by the time I hit reply, I would have already "timed-out" on the server, which means that when I hit the "new posts" to generate posts that I haven't read since my "last" login, I only get a small handful of threads. (because the server count it as that 've already "logged out", during my "inactivity" while typing my post.) It happened to me when I was translating which I did while I was on the forum too...
It becomes hard for me to keep track of the new posts around the forums since my real logout (usually the day before)...
is there something that I can do?
and there is another problem I am facing.
I can't seem to upload my avatar, which is well within the limits of this forum (9kb, 150x149)... and it seems that I am not the only one as dazzlette also faced a similar problem and we conversed through PM... (I am currently linking from off-site source)

05-16-2004, 07:55 PM
willy, is that question directed at me? :? i'm asking all the members to change the settings themselves. i'm not sure how to change the default setting for the entire forum. (i don't know if that option is available for me to change and i haven't come across something that will allow me to do so as of now.) and i'm not gonna do it manually per member. =0
lattae, i'm not sure i quite understand the "time-out" thing cuz i haven't encountered it. if you've logged on and your username & password are 'remembered', you will stay logged in until you completely log out (which i never do). if you don't get logged out, then you should still view all the new posts (at least for a number of hours). but if you logged out, then you won't see all the new posts from your last 'real' logout. i'm not sure why you're getting logged out. it happens to me at times when i get on a site for the first time and it won't remember my login and pw properly for whatever reason. but after i've cleared my cookies and relogin, it's usually ok from the next day on. sorry i can't be much of help. i'm no expert with these technical issues. >.<
in terms of the avatar though, the upload function should be working because i've uploaded an avatar for someone before. i usually prefer the link to off-site avatar option myself because i don't wanna be restricted by file size. anyway, i'll gonna save the pic in your current avatar and try to upload it for you to see if that works, 'k?

Did you change the forum default to "show all threads" yet? :D
ALL the forums by default show all threads (to prove it, log out and view a forum). And it has been showing all threads for me. I dunno if it really is everyone who is experiencing this or just a handful. I dunno. You don't have to change your profile though just to do that, although that would make it permanent. At the bottom of every forum there is a drop down allowing you to specify the "age" of threads you want to display.

Lattae:
You might want to try going into Tools > Internet Options and deleting your cookies and try to relog in and see if that happens again.
Also, are you running some sort of software firewall? Some tend to do that for the sake of protecting your computer. If you are, check around in the settings about cookies.
I'll try this out myself and see if it happens to me too.

Erm, is it possible to "prolong" the time frame for the "time-out"?
I agree ... I have this problem too. I think the time-out is pretty short. When there's inactivity on my end for a while, it just logs me off, and I gotta re-sign in.
As a result, I have lost track of those unread messages since my last sign in.

Even back then, it didn't always take just 20 posts for the rank to change. I think the higher your post count was, the more spaced out the ranks were. I remember after I got more than 3000 posts (I think), it took around 80 posts for the rank to change.

"Home" is the main page of the site, not the main page of the forums, right? I haven't noticed the thread creator vs. latest poster thing. The only time I'd go to that main page is when I first typed in the URL. After that I'd click on "Forums" and won't go back to the main page again. It's easier just to click on "new posts" from inside the forum than to go out to check for new threads. I kinda miss this aspect of our old forum though.

The banner on the home (portal) page is in Flash, so you need the Macromedia Flash player plug-in to see it. However, the banner on the forums does not move. I figured it would get pretty annoying after a while browsing the forums.
You might also try going to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced
and under the Multimedia section, make sure Play animation is checked (although that doesn't affect the Flash problem, it should make the GIF animated banners work.)

That's exactly what it is, any posts you make in the Give Me forum does not count towards post count.
And Ive got another question. Is there a way to make polls either anonymous or show the voters for each option, or are the settings predetermined for each forum?
Whether a poll is "public" is determined by the person who posted the poll. When you make a poll, you are given these option, note the circled:

If you're wondering why some of the old polls show voters, that's a bug due to the importer from phpBB, and I will try to fix later.

I dont know when this started happening, but I think it's started recently...
When you view a forum, i can see that some threads have more than one page, so it links to different pages. Sometimes however, the last page that it says on the forum page isnt the last page that the thread has. For example, on the forum page, it links to only 2 pages, but the thread itself has 4 pages. So I can't get to the last page directly unless the thread has 3 or more pages which in that case it has a link to "last page"

Is it possible to make it so that we can manually enter the page number we want to view in a thread? This would be really useful for long threads when you want to see some posts in the middle. Otherwise it would be very tedious to try to get to a page in the middle it when only the link to the first and last few pages are visible at one time.

Just run your mouse over a page number and you'll see something like:
http://jay-chou.net/forums/showthread.php?t=4318&page=12&pp=10
Just change the page number to whatever page you want to view.
the pp=10 means posts per page, how many posts appear at a time while viewing the thread. That part can't be changed I believe

And what does it even matter? Why are people complaining their post count is down. Haven't you guys learned at jcnet it's quality over quantity?
I'm really really really getting tired of people asking me about this, your post count isn't everything people. We might as well take it out of view.
I agree with you Karen. Posts are always an issue when it comes to forums, because for some reason, people think that the more posts they have, the more credibility and/or respect they gain. But it's what's IN the posts that matters, not the number. Especially here, where that's really stressed.
I actually used to care about my post count until I realized that it isn't an issue at all. I'd rather see a member with a resynched number of 150 meaningful posts than 800 posts just there for the sake of being there, barely scraping the criteria before deletion.
Oooh, I was surprised to see my nick in the above thread posted by msv :glug:
Would you rather have a post-count of 5000 with one-liners (ooh, Jay is so cute. Thank you for the pic!) or a post-count of 50 with properly thought-out replies ?

lemme emphasize again... do not obsess over reputation points. there's no competition and there are no prizes. who cares if you have 50 points or 150 points? it doesn't make one member better than another. the Members List can be used to look up a specific member. but the sorting options aren't really important. i don't think anyone would care much about the Join Date. and even Post Count... we'd rather someone to have 20 meaningful posts than 120 meaningless posts. so, what would you gain by sorting the members based on posts? nothing! the same goes for Reputation Points.
let's post about more "serious" problems that we need to deal with. :wink2: as far as i'm concerned, there is nothing "wrong" with the members list regarding rep points.

There's a daily scheduled outage from 4:30 to about 5:30 (GMT time)
Any other outages are just caused by huge amount of people gathering here because of Jay's new album release.
Sorry for the inconvienance caused, we'll just all have to bear it.
edit: my freaking gawd...I was back right after the daily outage and was the only one online, 2 minutes later....70+ people are back! poor poor server

Let's turn off registration (hehe I believe we did), ban guest viewing and ban regular users from browsing the threads.

yeah yeah I thought about it ....but I feel bad (yes I do have a heart despite what some people think  ). I know there are legitimate and nice people out there truly interested in reading the current news and lyrics released by Jay, and depend on the translations. It'd suck for them if we turned everything off. If I were in their shoes I'd be pretty sad. So we gotta compromise. We turn off registration, which is good enough for now.

Hey ... thanx for the explanation folks. At least I figured it's not much of my internet connection here coz' I recently switched plans. I can understand about the huge influx of traffic with Jay's new album releasing.
Somehow, Lepencil's idea about banning guest visits is kinda like a good idea. Somehow, it creates the suspense about the forum and whoever wanna view it MUST join. However, we will then have a problem of people joining just to have a peek at what the forum is about and then never coming back.
*sigh* What should we do?

Actually, things are already good as they are right now.
There is some technical reason why our server usually experiences outage at about the same time, but I don't think we need to elaborate about it, but other than that, yeah, our server's alive and kicking.
Just help us all contribute to our site maintainence. ORDER (http://www.jay-chou.net/forums/announcement.php?f=67) your copy of <Qi Li Xiang> / (Orange Jasmine) and earn us some needy dough. Or you could spare a dollar or two and donate via paypal. That'd help keep all guests and our members happy.

No idea whether this has been pointed out but there is a considerable amount of space under certain signatures. i.e. Karen beneath the quote in your signature, there's a lot of lines before it hits the quote buttons. Same goes with Charmed and Cacky has less lines underneath hers.
Weird because water lily is fine.. and mine seems to be also.
jakinni
07-24-2004, 07:42 AM
:? Isn't that just due to the fact that Karen doesn't have a banner in her sig so it appears there's more empty space? As well, the min. amount of space a post takes up depends on length of post or how long the profile is, which ever is longer. It depends on what goes in your profile on the left. Some have a lot in the Usergroups section so it stretches it out, or have long Location names. On the other hand, some don't have an avatar, so less space is taken up.

hey jayx318x i got a little question. What ever happened to the Daily (well not daily..like every other day) Free Music/MV download that went on about 1/2 year ago?
Was that getting leeched like hell or something so you had to turn it off?
oh btw...i'd suggest you block off all of the jay music/movies/works downloads as well as the download and links site as to prevent leeching. That will really discourage leeching..as you'll have to become one of the member groups member's in order to view them.

is there some automatic log out system in place after a specified time of "inactivity"? well, i have a small problem. whenever i'm typing a long post i get logged out after a while so when i go to hit the "post reply" i get a msg which tells me i'm not authorised to post (coz i was logged out). therefore i lose my post. at the moment, i'm just copying my long posts after i've typed it, then i go to log in again before i post it.
is there an option that we can change to stop the automated log off? or can this only be changed for the entire forum by the admins? :?

There seems to be a discrepancy between login/logoff times...
I used to have similar problems to Teresa.
Now, I'm like Kahel... always logged on (with remember me checked) 24/7 until I log off.
I'd say there's something up with her cookies...
Check your interent options...
If you're using IE, go into the options menu, privacy tab, and set it to Low.
Then flush out your history and cache, and make sure you delete all your cookies.
Try that... it might work.
EDIT:
I just thought of something else...
Do you access your account from different computers? For example, a workplace and home one.
If you do, it could cause the sort of thing you mentioned. To fix it, just make sure you delete the cookies from both (or more) computers.

Try reinstalling IE through the downloadable setup file available at Microsoft. It should re-download and reinstall everything through fresh downloaded files.
The link is available on this page (right hand side). (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1e1550cb-5e5d-48f5-b02b-20b602228de6&DisplayLang=en)

Say you still get the outage with the site, immediatly go to Start -> Run -> Type in "cmd" without the quotes and when you're in command, you would type in these exact words: ping -t www.jay-chou.net
That way, if you are getting a ping response back, it's definitely IE because your computer is able to send and recieve data with Jay-Chou.net

charmed if you're going to look at the very bottom of every page on the left side, there's a drop down menu for the forum skin you want to use. By default it's jcnet7lx. You can change that to the old blue jay skin or the default skin for Vbulletin. If she's having a problem with 7lx skin particularly, then she can have the option to change it to something else.
Ask her to clear her cache too. go to Tools->internet options->delete files and delete cookies. Then using a different skin, ask her to sign in. It's more likely a prob with her browser settings.
Pugwash

Was it just that page or every single one?
If it was just for that page, then there could have been large images causing her to scroll horizontally. If it's for every single page, it may mean her resolution is too low i.e. 640x800. Tell her to change it to minimum 800x600 or recommended 1024x768. Of course, tell her to adjust her monitor to the highest refresh rate possible after she had adjusted to these resolutions. If she does not know how, then right click desktop > properties > settings tab > advanced > monitor tab.
I recommend a minimum of 75hz so it's easy on the eyes. 60hz over a long period of time, will screw your eyes up.
What happens when she can't reply to PMs or start threads? They maybe related because one is sending data in a form of a message which would be in an inbox but the other one would be publicly displayed in a thread. Take kahel's suggestion of clearing her cache and cookies. That or re-installing IE6 w/ the latest updates.
Seems like she has a lot of problems. If she needs further help, just PM me for a contact and I'd be willing to help her over a chat program.

Otherwise, PM'ing the person who had broken the banner rules can also be another option.

hey...i dunno if this will be a good suggestion but here me out.
If you go the "members list" on the top and click it, youll see all the members that have logged into jay-chou.net
now i was just lookin through there (i was bored) and i was surprised to see that so many of the users...had 0 posts. Now...i was thinking...why is this? Could it be they're coming to jay-chou.net for the sole purpose of finding lyrics, pics, and freedownloads (leechers ...).
heres what i propose. If its possible (though it may take a looonnnggg time), go through and ban/delete every one of those users. They're not posting...they're not contributing, so chances are they're leeching. i know itll be time consuming, but maybe it'll be beneficial.
oh and another thing. We all know how leechers are rampant...especiallly in the downloads section. Why not do this....block of ALL new users...not just at peak hours..permanently. Instead, if they wish to join they must submit an "application" (its liek getttin a job). If you guys think they're up for it..than admit them in. If not, don't. This way, you won't have to bother with only so and so people who are jcnet regulars can watch this...and only these usergroup people can do that. Everything will be open to everyone. I think it'll make the forums more cohesive and united as one.
so ya..i thought these ideas were good..maybe they aren't..oh well

Hi,
Thanks for the ideas, but I don't think they are practical nor fair, and here's why.
Could it be they're coming to jay-chou.net for the sole purpose of finding lyrics, pics, and freedownloads (leechers ...).
What's wrong if they just come here for the sole purpose of finding lyrics? Or Pics? Or free downloads?
Which we have. Do you never go to other forums for that same purpose, and never post? Alot of us do.
There's nothing wrong with that at all. If we limit the number of people who have access to such things, we lose contributers as well. Many times we've have 0 posters, even non-registered people, who
have pointed out in PMs that there were mistakes in the lyrics or whatnot, which is helpful to us.
We sometimes have people who come here to the Downloads & Links forum and leech, at some point they feel like contributing (maybe out of guilt who knows), so they'll post up a download or something, though few in number, hey it helps.
If its possible (though it may take a looonnnggg time), go through and ban/delete every one of those users. They're not posting...they're not contributing, so chances are they're leeching. i know itll be time consuming, but maybe it'll be beneficial.
First of all, forum software is very efficient, everything can be done in an automated system so deleting 0 posters can be done in 10 seconds. But again, I don't think it's a good idea.
Forcing people to post for the simplest of things such as lyrics or pics invites meaningless one liners. Alot of members we have who do not post don't have a good command of the english language, so they don't post. It's not fair to them, not to mention discriminating, if we say ok you have to post if you want the goods.
Why not do this....block of ALL new users...not just at peak hours..permanently. Instead, if they wish to join they must submit an "application" (its liek getttin a job).
Sorry but our lives do not revolve around this forum 24/7. You're just giving us more things to do.
In the end I'm the one that has to review these "applications" and maybe Lisa and lepencil too. We have our hands tied with more important issues (school, work). And we can't leave this to "people we trust" or other members to review it, because frankly, our criteria for a "decent member" is different than the next person, and again, everyone has more important things to do. We get dozens of new members each day, plus all the current members who have to do this "application" thing, it's too much work.
Everything will be open to everyone. I think it'll make the forums more cohesive and united as one.
I thought the whole purpose of your idea was to block things from certain people? And I don't see how this makes the forum cohesive in any way? How can you with 1000s of members? It's impossible. Our cohesion already lies in the social groups we already have.
In conclusion, there is no big problem with having 0 posters. I don't think the forums are slower in any way (maybe a tad, but it's bearable). How can our forums grow if we keep imposing such restrictions to our members? I'm afraid this will turn people off even more to our forums, we already have so many rules and standards here, another one is going to push people away even further.
I'm a member at alot of forums, most of which I've never posted a single thing, but I still visit them often for news and information. This site is an informative site, not a "leave a penny take a penny" type of site. The only restriction is the Jay Downloads, which we think is very fair, if you want the goods there, then yes you have to contribute.
And I do delete members ever so often, I mean if I didn't we would have over 30,000+ members. So it's not like I'm doing nothing to control our "population problem"

Alright.... Some of you who'd tried to help me might remember this "problem" I was having with the "daily site outage" on my end. Well... I've tried everything everyone has suggested, BUT I'm still having the problem. What's worse is that now I even get the outage when I used Yahoo! browser. So I can't access the site at all from 12:30am to 1:00am EST. I guess I'll just have to remember not to try to post during that time!

The outages happen vunsin, they happen from time to time. It's most likely not your browser. Just let it go, I don't know what else to tell you.

Well... like I've said, I'll just schedule my break time from the forum to be from 12:30am to 1:00pm... It's no big deal. I just thought I should keep you guys updated, since you were so helpful to me when I first brought up the problem.

Hmm? :glug: There's nothing wrong with the forums now, as far as I know. :glug:
The server went down a couple of hours before your post, if I remember correctly, so that might be a temporary glitch there. :glug::glug:

The forum had a problem last night. I think it was a glitch in the system. Somehow eventhough it's still Sept 18 the date for some posts where sept 19, thus the sept 18 posts are prempted before the sept. 19 posts causing double posting in some cases.
I think this went on for about 5 hours...approximately. I think. But it's fixed now, though some posts are misplaced.

hey this is my first time making suggestion and i hope i did it right.hope this suggestion is not taken by anyone yet...
i suggest that its time for a change of the skins...i've browsed through previous skins used by the net and found them quite great...wondered if we can have them back or have something new....so that everyone have more choices to choose....
sagara0510
10-12-2004, 03:38 AM
hmmm a new skin is always nice... but its alot harder to make one than most ppl think..
karen does all the site design if i'm not mistaken and she's been rather busy lately so i don't think it'll be possible to have a new skin implemented any time soon...
not to say this current skin is very old either...
jayx8318x
10-14-2004, 04:15 AM
I don't make the skins from scratch because they take painfully long. I only customize them, and add modifications suited to our needs. Even so, it's not something I look forward to as it takes time I don't want to give up. With that said, we only add new skins when Jay has a new "something" out, be it movie, album, etc.
kasic_fantasy
10-15-2004, 08:44 AM
then how about let us use the ols skins used by the net? coz now we only got 3 choices...can we have the old ones back?
sagara0510
10-15-2004, 09:29 AM
i think some if not all the old skins can't be used because they were used with our old php system phpbb... now we've changed it over to vbullettin which is different and therefore the skins will be different....

Sorry.. but I was just wondering if images/pictures (instead of banners) can be posted under signatures? If it is a case of size-problems (taking too much space, etc), limits can be set. Just a suggestion though. :wink2:

Banners ARE images/pictures with size limits though, so I don't understand how is your suggestion any different? :?

Er, what I meant is pictures/images like eg.20x20.. not something longer like banners, eg.300x150 or something.

As long as it is within the limits of the banner rules, i don't see why you cannot put pictures of 20 x 20 pixels? :?

Just making sure..
So I can put something like the following....

into my signature right? As long as it doesn't exceed the limit?

Yup, rainbow.
That pic's all right. Any pic's fine as long as it does not exceed the banner rules limits. :wink2:

Ok I think that the art studio section should be organized. I think it should be organized like the Karaoke Lounge forum. Now that I think of it, maybe the Reading Room should also be organized this way.
Well here's my proposal.
So here's an example on how it's organized in the Karaoke Lounge:
[KARAOKE] yourusername - (Update: song name dd/mm/yy)
So my example of how the Art Studio would look like this:
[GRAPHICS] yourusername - (Update: added # graphics dd/mm/yy)
[WALLPAPERS] yourusername - (Update: added # wallpapers dd/mm/yy)
[ASSORTED*] yourusername - (Update: added ** dd/mm/yy)
I think most people will go under this title.
*ASSORTED includes wallpapers, graphics, avatars, banners, drawings, etc.
**Fill in whatever you've added, eg. added banners, added avatars and drawings.
And for [CONTEST], [CONTACT SHEETS], and those kind of things can be left that way.
And in your post, you should divided into sections:
Banners
add link
add next link
and so on...
Graphics
add link
add next link
and so on...
I think something similar will go for the same in the Reading Room:
[FANFIC] yourusername - (Update: added # chapters dd/mm/yy)
[POEM] yourusername - (Update: added # poem or poem title dd/mm/yy)
[ASSORTED*] yourusername - (Update: added ** dd/mm/yy)
*ASSORTED includes stories, poems, fan fictions, etc.
**Fill in whatever you've added, eg. added poems, added 2 chapters.
And in your post, you should divided into sections:
Fan Fiction
add links with Story Title*updated* dd/mm/yy
add next link *complete with # chapters* dd/mm/yy
and so on...
Example: (Using Vicluva's as a sample)
Her thread title: [STORY] Vicluva - (Update: completed story 05/02/05)
Stories
Autumn Leaves (http://www.jay-chou.net/forums/showthread.php?t=9475) *complete with 17 chapters* 05/02/05
Poems
add links
or just type it up or quote it
and so on...
Ahh well, yea there's my 2 cents.

htruc: I can see where you're coming from with your proposal for the organization of Art Studio and Reading Room in likeness to the Karaoke Lounge; however, there is a reason why these two forums are not organized like the Karaoke Lounge to begin with.
Allow me to illustrate the differences between the forums and the sort of problems that will arise with organizing things in the Karaoke Lounge format. =)
In Karaoke Lounge, the best way is to have each member start his/her own thread.
example:
[KARAOKE] - your username (updated: song name dd/mm/yy)
This is because it would be very haphazard looking if you create a new thread every time you sing a song. Since only links to songs are provided, if I'm curious to check out a member's singing, I only need to visit one designated thread. Ideally, members who post their karaokes should organize their links in some sort of chronological order so that it's easy to spot the "latest" songs. That's why the Karaoke Lounge is organized by username threads.
In Art Studio, topics are labelled according to the category the artwork falls in - e.g.: GRAPHIC, WALLPAPER, DRAWING, etc.
As you mentioned in your examples, if we were to organize threads by username, most people would go for the ASSORTED option. This is because most people who are "artists" will rarely limit himself/herself to one category of work. But if you think about it, this organization method will not be the best when it comes to artwork. First of all, the ASSORTED title makes the categorizing vague. Secondly, since most people will not only create just graphics or just wallpapers or just one category of artwork, the GRAPHICS, WALLPAPERS, etc. username categorizations will mostly likely be minimal. So, what you will end up seeing in Art Studio would be a list of threads entitled ASSORTED, followed by username and most recent updated date. This becomes rather meaningless because I must click on the member's link to see exactly what kinds of art has he/she contributed. Unlike Karaoke Lounge where I know I will only find songs.
The other problem is the graphic intensiveness of the Art Studio threads. If one posts every piece of art he/she wants to share in just one thread, it can take a while to load all the graphics. Right now, we allow avatars, banners, and graphics along with small drawings to be posted inline (meaning using the [IMG] tags), but large artforms such as wallpapers should be posted as links. When you reflect upon this, you will see that even if the threads are organized in a way where there are sections clearly labelled (i.e. banners, graphics, wallpapers, etc.), it would be tiring to click on every single link the member has posted (e.g. 15 wallpaper links) and it will take too long to load if everything's compiled into one thread (e.g. 10 banners, 5 graphics, 5 wallpapers).
Not to mention, a lot of people may create items related to special themes/occasions. Therefore, if a thread is started, the member may post a few lines describing how he/she was inspired to create the piece. So, if everything's lumped together, it will limit the member on the descriptions he/she may like to offer because everything will pretty much be reduced to links.
That is why overall, the topics should just be labelled with the correct category. Ideally, if you want to post a series of artwork at the same time, you should just start 1 new thread as opposed to 3 or 4 different threads (e.g. if I just made 2 graphics I'd like to share, I should only start 1 thread). The only exception would be if you are continuously updating a thread for a specific purpose (e.g. Miss_gun's banners thread), or if you want to post a variety of categories of artwork in one go and condense your post through compilation of your work (e.g. if I just made 3 banners and 1 graphic).
As for Reading Room, it is currently organized like the Art Studio, but with different categories, obviously. The problems will be similar to what I've mentioned above. Instead of being graphics intensive, it will be text intensitive. Take a fan fiction for example. If you have that mixed in with other stories, poems, etc. that you write in just one thread, it would be taxing on a reader's eyes to decipher what exactly one is reading. Hence, you may post a number of poems in one thread because poems usually aren't that long. But preferably, not stories or fan fics. It'd be just too much to go through at one time. Imagine clicking on a thread where the first post takes up a whole page? And if one writes fan fics, the member should post the first chapter in the first post of the thread. Subsequently, just make new posts in their thread for new chapters, with the associated link edited into the first post. Again, this would minimize loading time and avoid confusion for the readers.
Thanks again for your proposal and I hope it's clear why Art Studio and Reading Room aren't organized like Karaoke Lounge. :-)

I'm not sure if this has happened to anyone else, but lately, some of my subscribed threads have been disappearing from time to time. I'll resubscribe to them, but they'll disappear again. Just wondering if that was a problem I could fix or something. Thanks.

This could be due to the subscribed thread being closed, which cancels the subscription.

I think it may be due to old versions of shockwave/flash installed on your computer.
And I have a question myself: How come it doesn't display our member groups at the side anymore?

I heard a great idea, i think it was from a different thread. If its from this one, I'm terribly sorry and sorry for the incovinience. But its to make a JCNET radio on here, so you can listen to music when you enter JCNET. I know this will affect the 56kbps connectors, but if you lower the bit rate, to say about 48 or 30kbps, then it would be fine. The problem with it skipping can be solved easily, just create a small frame on either the sides or top or bottom and when you change web pages, it wont refresh, it will jsut continue playing. Also it wont automatically start, which helps the dial up users, instead the member has to manually press the play button. I personally dont know how to configure it but i'm pretty sure one of your members do, maybe mandarinradio(not sure if thats his actual username).

chineseguyjl, I think you're referring to the topic entitled [Suggestion] A Radio at JC.NET http://www.jay-chou.net/forums/showthread.php?t=11361
I've been wondering whether it would be better organized if we split the Download & Links forum into 4 sub forums, namely Chinese Multimedia, Japanese Multimedia, Korean Multimedia and Other Multimedia. Right now, if we are to find a particular song or album in that forum, it will be a bit troublesome.
Just throwing in my 2 cents. ;)

Hi there, I have a lil' suggestion, how about including a function that enables you to see all posts you've posted inside the User CP instead of having to find a post you recently posted, click on your username from there and then on the link "Find all posts by ---"?
I was thinking, it'd be easier if we had a similar function in our User CP, it allows us to track our posts easily without having to search all the forums. Especially for people who post a lot each day, they don't have to trawl through every forum to check for replies and such.

if i understand what you're trying to say.. dont we already have that function?
when you click on the username on a post a user makes, a box will scroll down and you click "find more posts by ---" and it'll show all their posts.
is that what you're talking about?
