OMG... talk about being biased here.. but no offence to ppl who have already replied to this topic, but STOP BEING SOOOO BIASED!!! it seems to me that u guys are saying the best vocalist are simply pop stars that u like... *cough cough*

i no some ppl are going to kill me for saying this, even though he is a music genius, JAY IS NOT THE BEST VOCALIST IN THIS WORLD.... he mumbles and struggles a lot to reach notes...... mumbling a whole long line of worlds is not being the best vocalist in the world...i think jay has even admitted himself that he is not the best singer in the world. so stop being sooo biased... thats the same with david tao.. he strains and shouts sooo much.. that is not proper singing...

but for me, i reckon that not many (if none) asian pop stars can really be a spectacular vocalists, but i think elva, hacken and joey are not bad...

i think jay has even admitted himself that he is not the best singer in the world.

true, he has been quoted to have said that.

but for me, i reckon that not many (if none) asian pop stars can really be a spectacular vocalists, but i think elva, hacken and joey are not bad...

true, i agree with that one.

however, you've got to admit that as jay fans, some ppl would tend to be a little biased. i don't see any harm in that considering that biased or not, it's their opinion if they really think jay's vocals are great. and anywayz, this topic is really quite subjective. :wink2:

vocalist, there's a bunch! ARe you talking about pop vocalist or is this soprano vocalist, or what. if you're talking aboutit, I don't even think you can consider Jay

Here's what I think
Japan: misia, Gackt, Mika Nakashima (her voice is very pleasant)
China: Han hong, Song Zhu Ying, Li Na, Wang Faye, Qi Ying, Jacky Cheung, Liu Huan, Coco Lee there are sooooo many I can't even name, if you ever listen to the folk singers, all of them can sing
Korea: Ock Hyun Jun, Bada, Lena Park, Lee Soo Young, Kang Sung Hoon, Hyesung, Kangta (i can't think of any)
Then you have people from southern asia like Regine, the new 15 year old girl which I can't remember the name of, there are lots who can sing really good english too!

I don't listen to very much music outside the Taiwan market, maybe a lil HK but I don't find it anything special maybe because nothing has really sparked my interest.

However, I do think David Tao is the best vocalist in Asia. He has a really nice voice on top of his songs.

I think he screams more during concerts and keeps the level of excitement up (Juding from the Soul Power CD). But other than that, I don't find much songs where he screams? I mean Melody for example, is a song that involves a lot of vocal and hardly any screaming, just reaching the high notes. I think if you were to sing that song and your goal was to sing it perfectly, then you'd definitely be up for a challenge.

Perhaps you can give an example of a song where he screams..

Lee Hom is a very good vocalist, maybe equally good as David for all I know. I just know he has a very strong musical background, attending music college and all. I think what surprises is his low voice and his ability to hit such high notes in some songs.

Jay is not bad itself but as mentioned, he does mumble, whereas Lee hom and David especially sing so clearly in my opinion. Although, he has made tremendous amounts of progress as a singer on top of his piano skills... I mean he sei you mo is a very hard song to sing if you dont think he can hit high notes.

well i dunno about japanese, malay or any other asian language vocalist except for chinese songs vocalist in asia, and i really really think.....GARY CAO GE is the best so far. rich voice with a freaking wide range and vocal that sings with so much emotion, he is really dope!! GARY FTW :D

seriously though Jay is still my role model, Gary has became the next and i think Gary owns Jay vocally wise, no offense here. moreover Gary could really own an english song better than lots of english singers themselves i dare say that.

everyone should really listen to gary at least once in their life! i swear ta god!!

As of the moment, here are a few very talented Asian artists I could think of that passed my standards for vocal prowess:

Singapore: the very vocally agile Stefanie Sun

Malaysia: the mystifying vocal enchantress, Siti Nurhaliza

Taiwan: of course, the heavenly kings Jay Chou and David Tao, and the sultry Coco Lee

Japan: phenomenal icon Ayumi Hamasaki

Korea: the dynamic duo Fly to the Sky

and from my homeland, the pride of the Philippines, Asia's songbird Regine Velasquez and the future of Filipino music, the very young and multi-talented Sarah Geronimo.

watch Asia's Songbird Regine Velasquez hit those high notes (http://youtube.com/watch?v=4c-6yPvcIO0)

Teen powerbelter Sarah Geronimo singing one of her biggest hits to date (http://youtube.com/watch?v=kfPyImPRCkA)

Aiyo, that's going to be a hard one, however, some of the best vocals & music I've heard from asia were from Taiben(1TYM),Se7en,JJ Lin,Fly to the Sky,& my one & only Jay Chou.

In conclusion,Fly to the Sky really blew me away with their explosive vocals when I first saw their MV for The Promise & they were really cute in there as well.^^

I personally think A-Mei and David Tao are very good vocalists. But we can't forget about S.H.E's accapella performance! Their harmonies are excellent, and I consider them great vocalists also, especially Hebe (her voice is strong.) I can't say that Jay is the "best" vocalist, but he is probably the best rapper there is in Taiwan/Asia. Coco Lee's vocals are also impressive :]
