Durians are supposedly a nice Singaporean hallmark and most Singaporeans I know like durians.

But not me.

Anyone else doesn't like durian? Or are there anyone here who loves the fruits till they're willing to defend them to death?

I actually used to eat durians when I was a kid. Until something happened which is still unknown to me today that made me completely abhor it.

I just can't stand the LOOK of durians, let alone the taste, let alone the smell. And it's horrible, the things it does to your breath. And of course it gives you a nasty sore throat if you eat too much of it.

I hate durians and my hatred shall never cease.

Anyway..I like durians, but not love them..
I am fine with people who don't, dislike, hate durians.. because not everyone likes the 'unique fragrance' of the fruit..

Well.. durians always makes me think of Malaysia.. and sometimes when I saw durians, it makes me think of home.. :)

Yup..yup.. eat durians ..but not too much..

I have no special preference for durians. Can eat, but never crave. The smell is usually fine with me.

However, I do so hate it when they place those durians at the entrance of aircon supermarkets (something that NTUC started doing). The smell just totally overwhelms you! Ventilation becomes really bad and I start hyperventilating.

feixuan and miss_gun, you're wlecomed here anytime! :)

Oh god the thought of the stench of durians permeating throughout a bloody air-conditioned place is enough to make me ill. It's the stuff nightmares are made of. I get enough of a headache just walking by a durian stand in the market. :glug:

Feixuan, durians are sold in Thailand at this time of the season?!?! Oh my! Don't buy any, they're very heaty and gross.

WOO-HOO!!! :excited:

i'm not s'porean and i love durian!!! :yeah:

you know i actually discovered something abut durian....when you smell it from afar, it's not pleasant, but if you get your nose a bit closer (okay, perhaps if you just stand next to it) it smells totally different! i think coz the smell is more concentrated when you're close to it...it just smells much more tolerable.

for durian lovers, try cold durian milkshake! yummy!!!! or homemade durian ice-cream!!!

I like durians. It's so delicious. Yummy... :D Well, my mom always reminded me whenever she bought durians home, she told me not to eat a lot coz its heaty. Last time, I got a sorethroat from eating durains but it never stop me from eating it. Durains just remind me of home, of course and besides that, The Esplanade.

I love durians! we also get them here in the Philippines. sometimes it's very expensive but there are seasons when we can get them cheap. i like them especially when they're really smelly and sweet. hehe. i may sound weird but the smell is the best things i like about durian. it just smells good to me. i mean, i admit it might be a stench to some people but to me it's the aroma of the durian that sets it apart.

i like to eat them after they've been frozen in the freezer. i dont know, but i just like eating them cold.

i think our family's kinda divided when it comes to loving durian. my dad, brother, older sis and i absolutely love durian. my younger sis and my mom dont eat it but they dont mind if we have it in the house.

well... as a malaysian, durian is quite abundant here...it's known as the king of fruit...i was watching some European guy trying this durian and he said it taste just like rotten cheese...adui funnylar... i have to say that i like it very much... can't express the taste...a bit sweet, a tinge of alcohol flavour, sometimes a bit bitter..u guys have to try it... it reminded me about a couple of years ago when my dad brought a huge container of durian from thailand back here...haha.. he sealed it so well that he can escape the airport guards...haha...as durian is a seasonal fruit...have to wait a couple months to eat it again...

I like durians!

I used to hate them. I thought the stench was horrible and I couldn't understand how people could eat them! Then a couple of years ago, I was in Malaysia, and my cousin's father-in-law owns some kind of durian orchard, so they gave us like CRAPLOADS of durians... HEAPS!! We had to give them out to other relatives and family friends cuz there was too much lol. So anyway, then I realised that I could actually stand the smell! Then I thought hey.. it smells kinda nice. Then I decided to eat one.. and another one.. and another one.. and so on. So somehow.. I just acquired the taste.

They don't really *taste* like how they *smell* imo, so you shouldn't be deterred if you don't like the smell. =]

I am not from Singapore but when I saw the durian post I had to come see what it's about ^^

Anyhoos, I don't like durian at all and I don't remember a time I actually liked it. I don't like it coz the taste, smell, texture and the way it looks like. :? The rest of my family loves it though and everytime they eat it, I hide in my room to avoid the smell hehe. :wink2:

04-30-2004, 04:14 AM
Oh.. I can't say I love or like them..but I ate them when my sis who loves durian a lot bought them.. and I try to control eating coz I used to fall sick when I ate a lot.. so for a period, I din eat them even though my parents bought them home.. then this year, I actually ate quite a lot.. =P

yeah.. the smell is unbearable like xiaoli said.. but when u eat it the taste is different and makes u wanna eat more! :)

*Malaysian neighbour waves hello*

Love durians! But I must say it is bad for health. Despite adding much unwanted calories, durians are also 'heaty' as most of us would know.

I've never heard of consuming durians for the benefit of health so I guess we indulge in it solely for its tastes?

I love durian ice-creams too.

panda-shine I have friends who walk into the supermarket, smell durian and run out! :lolabove:

 it's pretty funny how different people react to durian. i have a cousin who absolutely refuses to sit on the same table as us people who are eating durians. he probably wouldnt touch it with a ten-foot pole.

altho i really like the taste of durians, call me weird but the smell is one of the things that i like best about it. the smellier the better. hehehe.

oh, and..i also havent heard of anybody taking durian for the benefit of health (as jshley said) but i've heard one can take it for...shall we say... romantic purposes. durian is supposed to be an aphrodisiac. :wink2:

ashley
04-30-2004, 08:35 AM
durian is supposed to be an aphrodisiac.

Probably because it's heaty... y'know... it creates heat in the body that consumes durian. Makes you all hot and sweaty :brows:

hisashiluv14
04-30-2004, 12:05 PM
But I wouldn't want to do it with someone who's just consumed it. Gross. Bad breath and all. :)

My whole family hates durian except for my mom, and this one time my dad stupidly bought a durian cake for her birthday thinking it was a fruit cake and in the end my mom ended up having to eat the cake all by herself. I pitied her so I ate a slice, and the cake was kinda half-frozen so there's bits of ice in the durian bits so it wasn't that bad.

My grandparents from Taiwan like durians though. Hehe.

lol!!!

hey, do the s'porean buses and trains still have the "no durian on board" signs? hehe...when i saw those signs next to the usual "no-smoking" signs, i just laughed!

"aiyo!! what's that dreadful smell huh Mr bus driver???"
"just someone's durian..."
"uh, okay lah...i think i'll just walk home..." *flees in lightning speed*

durian ice cream is actually very easy to make. for those who aren't use to durian, you may wanna give the ice cream a try. all you do is mix soft plain vanilla ice cream with fresh durian, and voila!

04-30-2004, 01:08 PM
Teresa, I've not seen those signs at the MRT stations for some time now, but I'm sure it still holds true. Believe me, a train filled with perspiring commuters together with durians is not a pleasant thought.

Are durians available in Australia?

I've not tried durian ice cream before, but I do have a weakness for durian puffs/tarts. Absolutely wonderful, especially after refrigeration (be prepared for hostile durian takeover in fridge though...the smell stays on and on and on).

And these are my favourite puffs from Goodwood Park - YUMMY!

petheads--> yeah, fresh durian is available in australia all year round...we import from you guys i think...

wow! those puff things look real yummy!!! can you get them from any cake shop?
in australia the only durian cake we have is the rolls and the b-day cake.

(be prepared for hostile durian takeover in fridge though...the smell stays on and on and on).

:lolabove: that is so true!!! whenever we have opened durian in the fridge, we can smell it every time someone opens the fridge! i might be sitting in the living room, and my bro goes to get some water....ahhhhh....the fragrance of durian!

04-30-2004, 03:58 PM
hisashiluv14 how come ur dad mistook the cake for some other kind of fruitcake? :? the cake mustn't have smelled like durian, then. cuz usually anything durian-y emits a strong smell. anyways, that was so sweet of you to brave the smell and eat a slice for ur mom.

"no durians onboard" signs in public transpo? that is too funny. that must mean you can get a lot of durians anywhere then. cuz here, it's a little rare. we only get them when it's durian season. and we usually get them from the southern part of the philippines.

we brought some durian onboard a ferry once and it was closed and airconditioned. everybody was looking around...i bet they were looking for the source of the smell. of course, we ddnt announce to everybody that we have durian meat with us. hehe.

lolz...thoughts and feelings about durians...hehehaa

sorry, now that i'm over that i just wanna say i LOVE durian....

its delicious!

apparently western ppl hate it because of genetics....like the durian loving gene is not in their system

but the vegemite loving gene is....for anyone who doesn't know, vegemite is an Australian spread that tastes kinda bitter if u put too much on....

and yeah, apparently asians are missing the vegemite loving gene...

but not me! i love both! hehehehaa

wow...no durians on board?! hahahee, might stink the place out a bit hey?!

and yes, i know pplz! durian smell just overpowers everything in the fridge!

i love fresh durian but if i want a durian fix i'll go and buy those sticks of durians they sell at asian grocery shops...

my bf hates it, will not kiss me or even talk to me after i've eaten it unless i cleanse my mouth out with listerine.....

he sez its good for keeping strangers and guys away.....hahahhee ^^

durians are ok, soft and gooey  but the durians they sell in sg are actually very good. tt time i bought durians in china and they were all hard and dry. didnt even have any taste.....maybe they imported the durians from some non-tropical country or something. but anw i heard durians will only fall off from the trees at night so that they wont hit any poor fellow on the head :?

crusty-applepie: I dunno, my dad is just... like that. perhaps it's got something to do with him not being able to read English (he's Taiwanese). But yeah the smell wasn't very strong. It tasted fine though. Not as vile as I thought.

But if anyone offers me a durian milkshake, I will run away really quickly.

hehs, i dont like durians. but it isn't to the extent of hating it. its just the smell and the look of the flesh. i think its just a preferance problem...my family have 2 vs 2 on the durian issue, so its yeps, i shun away into my room whenever the durians enters the house. :)

bleh...i 've never actually tasted durian in my life so far...
the smell was jus to horrible...it kept me like like in the opposite side of the house...well away from the room where my cousin n his grandma, n my mum n dad were feasting on it....cept the smell still got its way through the house..i was like suffocating that night..no gasp of air was clean..
...but then i heard from my friends that durians taste like icecream?!......especially when its cold..so i figured the next time i come across a durian..i'm still gonna try it...cept i'm gonna wait until the durian comes to me...if i never come across one in my life..i not gonna bother eating it..

Oh, poor those who hated durians. You simply can't get away from the smell. No matter where they say : "Durian not allowed", when it's durian season, chances are you'll smell it !. Airplane, taxi (my friend's packed it in her luggage !), even Ritz Carlton (posh-hotel !). Hahaha, teresa, durian in fridge really ruins everythings - even my creams/toners which was in a tight plastic box

Several years ago I went on "durian eating spree", and afterwards really reduce my appetite for durians. Seasons may come and go, prices could go as cheap, but I was just not motivated

I still eat durian, but not crazy as before. Had eaten many versions of it : as fruit (bitter & creamy one please !), candy, cakes, chips ( :excited: Thailands - very good peanutty taste), milkshake, ice mix, ice cream, ice stick, jams, ... even as sort of sauce for fish :excited:

No, not at all... my dog actually gets really excited, and hops around us beggin for some when we eat durian actually

and yah, cold durian has a very ice-cream like feel/texture... and if you like durians, it'd taste amazing....

and ditto beach_gurl on the smell issue... It's like you can smell it from miles away... and the smell is super lasting. It's like whenever someone in my apartment block eats durian, we'd all know cos the lift will smell of it... imagine the smell lingering despite the short time one would spend in the lift while "transporting" durian...

Durians. How I love durians.

Thailand do have durians right now as they only come out in Summer. I really like it, but I don't like it too ripe and soft and all wrinkled. I like it quite hard and not too young and not too ripe. I also like to open the durain though it might be painful if u not careful.

Thai ppl have the desert made from ripe durain and sticky rice and coconut milk, too called " Kow Neaw Durain" . Anyone tried it??

That's one of my favorite. The last time I was there, the hotel serve it for lunch dessert. I tried to offer it to my caucasian friends - who - of course reject it one way or the other. :excited: great, no competition !.

We have something similar like that here, called kolak durian - it's coconut sweet sauce with durian.

Oh oh Kow Niaow Durian is Amazing!! so sweet...so soft...i love it. :D
The cool thing about it is that most of the smell is gone once its made into a dessert like that. not only sweet, its so soft when u eat it!! :excited:

Thai ppl love durian, i just like it, not that much. it actually depends on my mood, sometimes i just hate the smell :rasp: , but sometimes i get cravings!! :bleh:
durian does make u fat with tons of calories so i try to stay off.

having lots of calories...did u hear about the thai guy who died after eating too much durian? he ate like 4 huge ones. yeh, he died coz of an overload of calories. poor guy, it was all over the news in Thailand.
i mean how can u eat that much? i get full after 2-3 pieces. and each one has like 6-7 pieces, thats like 28 pieces! so sad he died for eating too much durian.
when u eat, u gotta watch the calories...or u might die like this dude. :bye:
just a little warning to those jay chou/durian lovers out there..

durians...hmmm... I used to hate it when I was a kid, but I will still sit wif my family to watch them eat, or even immitate my dad by using my small hands to crack open the thorny shells...
when I am older I got used to the smell and began eating them, not that bad but it is not my favourite fruit...I think strawberrires will b my favourite fruit...
btw do u realise that the durian smell lingers for a very long time even after u have eaten them a few hours back, for example your burp has a durian smell, your fart has a durian smell, your cough has a durian smell, your breath has a durian smell...

We also have durian here. It does have a funky gas like smell, but when durian is made into those lovely sweets. it's really very good....jams, tarts, pastries...they're all good. My favorite pastilles is the durian one.

Now talking about it, makes me crave for some. But eventhough I love durian pastilles, I could never eat the actual fruit itself. The gas-like smell makes me dizzy.

Man, I hate durians with a vengence ! Whenever I express that feeling, fellow Singaporeans look at me like I'm an alien with 3 eyes and a green nose. But I do hate it ! Worst bit is, I have an *extremely* sensitive nose which means that I can smell a durian a few kilometres away.

Ewww... durians are one of the last fruits on Earth that i wanna eat. The stench is simply unbearable and it's outer appearance is also awful! I wonder why people reckon that it's flesh is sweet and all.. -shivers- and indeed, those 'people' just have to exist in my family, my WHOLE family to be exact. I'm the odd one out that doesn't even touch durian. haha.. so my mom always teases me, saying if i was really part of the family. Bleagh... i'm not taken in so easily..

I've tried very hard to accept durian and make it one of the things in my 'favourite items' list but ah-ah.. i failed. :D I just can't stand anything related to durians.. may it be durian cakes, durian puffs, durian ice-creams or whatever.

Oh yeah.. and you know if you just put only one durian inside a fridge and leave it there overnight, gosh.. all the food in the fridge will be destroyed completely. No matter how hard you try to get rid of that stubborn smell, you just can't. There was once my tutor offered me a cup of plain water and after i took my first sip, i almost spit the whole drink onto her face! It was covered with durian smell!!Things can't get worse

Ew. That's really gross (the water)! I totally understand how you feel. I think a lingering durian smell is worse than the smell from the fruit itself.

This one time, my friend who hates durians too was walking past some roadside fruit stalls that sold durians. She made a face, like, ew, I hate durians, and started complaining loudly about the smell. Then this man who was selling the fruits heard her, and, as a joke, ran after her with the durians and was all, "Yao bu yao chi? Wo gei ni mian fei de!" (Want to eat or not? I'll give them to you free!) :D When she told me the story I just kept laughing. I'd die if that ever happened to me!

I used to like Durians a lot. My parents love it. My sister does not take the real thing, but turn to its product instead. My mom always claims that she did not take Durian while she was having my sister at that time. Only when my father bought a huge portion of Durian for me continuously for a number of days, I got sick of it. Now, my feelings for Durian is just neutral.

Its a matter of whether you are willing to accept it. Cos for me, I liked it from the very first time I saw it. At that time, I didn't even think that the smell is that bad. :D

The weird thing is..i don't really like those food with artificial durian flavourings....haha.. I only like it if the durian is fresh from the fruits..

Char, my sister is a directly opposite of you. Thats really strikes the balance. Next time, if we have a durian and durian product eating competition, I will try to bring her along to do an 'accompaniment' with you.

Haha! :lolabove: artificial durian flavours can never match the real one in my opinion. I wonder why so many people can't stand the smell and taste of the real one... It's delicious.

i love this fruit. it is one of my favourites. I like it cold. I think it taste wonderful after freezing it in the refrigerator.

Yeah,I agree with weemalyn.I love all my fruits to be cold, especially durian and oranges. For some reason they taste sweeter that way.I like both bitter and sweet durians.Durian is indeed the King of fruits but girls, do go easy on it as it has a high sugar content, one should only eat four seeds per day and most.

I love durians. But somehow I prefer durian products (eg: durian cake, durian puff, durian ice cream etc) rather than the fruit itself. I think Singapore has the best durian products ever, which is so very rare here in the US :(

I prefer real durian to durian products. same here, love both sweet and bitter durians...

Must try the durian paste at merchant court buffet. That is just so...... delicious and sinful and real good stuff.

Personally, I don't like them.
They have this smell that make me and my dad feel bad.
But my brother and mom like them so we just have to get used to the smell whenever they're eating it lol.
A few years ago when I went back to Taiwan, I liked them for a day. I don't know why, but I ate it and actually enjoyed it. It was so weird! Because the next day, I didn't ever want to eat durian again.

Okie.. I have absolutely no idea whether I posted here before.. but... I love durians to bits... But strictly limited to those real fruits.. Food with artifical flavoring just puts me off... They really taste nothing like durian to me..

I have always been wondering about why it is called 'durian-flavored' when it tasted nothing like durian at all.

Durians? I love it. Those Thai durians taste like sweet potato. They are too hard. I love those which has tiny seeds, a lot of flesh and are very sweet.

I just visited Singapore a month ago and I saw durians everywhere (even your huge building by the river that looks like a durian!). There were durian chocolates, candies, etc.

This was the first time I had ever heard of this fruit, let alone taste it. However, its smell alone was enough to drive me away. I don't understand how anybody could eat it. I have heard that the more you eat it the more you like it. But why would you subject yourself to such agony before you'll like it?

Durians?

Love them!! The 'meat' is so fleshy and yummy! Durian everything is nice -- icecream, puffs, cakes.. and did someone mention milkshake? I wanna try!

Which reminds me I've not had durians for a long time..

Oh and I remember, when I was young, after eating durians, I'll drink some salty water from the durian shell. fun!

yum yum for my tum tum...

really I don't think they smell that bad.

The fleshy, golden fruit...

yumm..

It's sweet, and has various flavours.

Unless you take the Thai ones, called the 'golden pillow'
Those are large, with small seeds but all have the same flavour unlike the local durians.

Durian is really fattening. I guess you can say I like Durian but then I can't eat alot, I can just eat one and if I try to eat other one, I wouldn't be able to swallow it.

In the beginning I always hated the smell but now I think the smell is alright.
