We thought it would be nice to have a thread where we could practise French. Quite a few of us learn it at school, so it would be practical, and useful, to put it to use here... :bleh:
Im picking it up in September, so it would be great if i can get back into French after a year off...but pardon me if i kill it..only German words come into mind now.. At least i have Bee and Sinny and Viv among others to correct me.. :D
Anyways...
Bonsoir.. :D (merci Bee...)

panda_shine
04-28-2004, 03:50 AM
wow Sinny, your Dutch is tres bien!
Actually my francais est tres mal aussi!! Though this like 7th year learning French. Ionno but I don't think French is a complicated language. I think I enjoy writing the most because it's so much easier and je detestais parler et lire en français parce que mon pronounciation est très mauvais.
Right now I am learning... the Conditionnel verbs.. an example would be, If you studied you would succeed. So in French you would say: Si tu etudiais, tu reussirais. In the first part of the sentence you would have to use Imparfait and the second half you have to use Conditionnel.. Ok this sounds complicated hehe.
Au revoir! ^^
wow really? writing it out is harder for me, because when you speak french, the difference when you WRITE the conjugations and etc can usually be got away with ^_~
wow you are in your 7th year and learning the conditionnel? >.< thats so unfair, we're only in our 3rd official year and we've learned the conditional, the plus-que-parfait, the futur anterieur, and all this other CRAP!! But yes, the conditonal is realllly hard! =/ what i hate the most though is pronouns/ i hate all the intricate complications when to use doute, or dont, or lequel, or lesquels, or auxquels, auguel, laquel and etc etc etc
mais, Je n'aime pas parle ou etudie francais. J'etudie francais parce que mon ecole n'a pas un prof pour chinois ou japonais (erms...i bet i spelled that wrong X_X)
bonne soir! (for some people)

Oh so you wouldn't take French if you had other choices, ray-chan? At our l'ecole, we get to pick our language in Grade 9 between French, Spanish, Japanese, German, Mandarin. Back than I never thought Mandarin would be useful in my future but now after a lot of changes in my life and becoming more.. asianize (though I am Chinese hahaa), I kind of regret not taking Mandarin because all my Cantonese friends are now really good with Pin Yin, and can speak close to fluent Mandarin  ...and me on the otherhand is getting worse in the Chinese language
awww...im only offered two languages...the standard in the US i think. Spanish and French. German used to be offered at my school, but not enough students chose it so the teacher was fired  before i even entered the school~!
wow if i went to your school i would take mandarin and japanese for sure! :excited: i have to try and improve my chinese on my own, since there arent any chinese schools nearby...my parents can only help me sometimes too X_X

Ive only ever learnt French and German..and its hard to compare the two, because i hadnt really had the time to understand German as much as i did with French. Ive learnt French for 5-6 years, whereas ive been learning German for 8 months. But people have always said to me that Germans easy to take to, but difficult to master.
And ive just watched the new episode of Friends (new in UK)...its the one where Joey speaks French! Except it comes out all bloo bla bla pooh... hehe...
*sigh..gotta love Joey..and the time he used Microsoft Word's synonyms to make himself sound more intelligent..he signed the letter 'Baby Kangaroo Tribianni' ... :lolabove: okie..off topic..

its the one where Joey speaks French!
oo is Joey French? coz his last name is Leblanc..
Oh and I didn't know Viv goes to a French Immersion school..!
I think French is alright though I don't think it's hard or complicated for me... In my class it's pretty easy to do well as long as you keep up with your homework and listen in class.. and I have a really good teacher too. I guess it really depends on how well your teacher teaches^^

04-30-2004, 07:16 PM
oh dear... french? i'm really bad at french. i used to be sort of okay, but after graduating from high school, i've barely had the chance to practise it, so it's sorta *very* rusty now. *coughs* :shifty:
i'd say french is a little easier than german, if you're really willing to put some effort into mastering the language. i'm saying this, cos i have to take a class at my university now, which is supposed to show us how to teach german grammar to foreigners. and... er... well, i have to admit that i'm really horrified, cos although i know how to conjugate and decline for example (is it also decline in english? not sure... ), i don't have the faintest idea how to explain *why*. and german grammar has tons of odd rules and even more exceptions. but well, if you're really interested in the language and the people, it might be worth the effort, cos german's a very rich language and it's a very useful language, esp. in europe (maybe save for france and the uk :wink2: ).
Bonjour! Ca va bein? Moi? Oui, oui! Je suis bien! Je m'appelle MSV et toi? J'ai 17 ans et j'aim jour au foot American et au tennis avec mon amis. C'est tres bien!

Anyone knows if there is a French version of the book "The Little Prince"?
kahel
05-29-2004, 07:54 AM
I am bilingual. English and Filipino, then I know a local dialect. A little French from HS, a little german from Uni. Chinese and Nihonggo from my current faves. But I only know a few phrases here and there.
When it comes to languages, vunsin knows it best. :wink2:
I think "The Little Prince" is originally in French. Would it be Le Petit Prince? :?
Sparkling_Jade
05-29-2004, 12:35 PM
yupyup Little Prince is originally written in french, by Antoine de St. Exupery.
I just read from somewhere that it´s the 3rd most printed book after The Bible and the book that Karl Marx wrote.. (don´t remember it´s english name.. :shy: )
We were supposed to read Le petit prince inour french course this year, but didn´t have the time to do it.. But from what I´ve heard it´s definitely worth reading
sauerkraut
05-29-2004, 06:46 PM
yeah, we had to read "le petit prince" in our french class, too. it's not bad IMO, but i guess i didn't like reading it while dissecting it at the same time. it kind of lessens the fun.
does anyone know some nice french artists btw? i'd love to check out some french music, but i have no idea where to start from. :worry:
panda_shine
05-29-2004, 07:16 PM
Hmmm French artist.. In my French textbook, they always talk about Roch Voisine.. though he's music is not really my type. Hmm perhaps try Celine Dion? She sings in French.
nunchakus
05-30-2004, 09:08 AM
Ahh...really? :shy: I am so ignorant. Didn't even know it was a translation. Boy, I should have known...I mean the author's Antoine de Saint-Exupery...like can a name sound more French? Hehhe.
I think Lara Fabian sings in French too. I have a song..it's called "Je t'aime"...That's quite nice.

05-30-2004, 07:00 PM
roch voisine? never heard of him. what kind of music does he make?
as for celine dion and lara fabian, well... my sister actually happens to be an avid fan of celine dion, but i don't like her music too much. it's probably due to the fact that i was kind of forced to listen it all day (or pretty often at least). i'm looking for some pop/rock stuff. but thanks anyway...!

Im picking up french again at school after a year out learning german. Can anyone recommend some french novels as well as singers? :D Merci beaucoup!
I remember sauerkraut helping me with my german the same way hehe... =)
you should try reasing Les Mis, the french version. i heard even if you're always looking in the dictionary, it improves your written skills a lot since its such a difficult novel. i mean, its bad enough in english :dead:
in french class my teacher had music videos and etc, but they were all...very old :dead: the oldies were interesting, but not really my kind of music. i'll ask some friends later for the names, if you dont mind oldies :bleh:

si vous avez besoin de l'aide pour mieux apprendre le francais.call me! ; D
Bonjour tout le monde!
Je dois avouer que je parle français mieux que l'anglais ou le chinois hehe...
Mon français est très mal is not a correct expression, il faudrait plutôt dire "je ne suis pas bon/bonne en français", ou "J'ai de la difficulté à parler le français".
I love this language, it's so beautiful, poetic and rich. I'll write a few sentences about Jay in French :p:

But all the vcds and cds are pirated so I usually don't buy anything there.
french artists?
I like Alizée She's soooo popular in France right now!
Mario Pelchat
Isabelle Boulay, her songs are very romantic and deeply-moving ;_;
il y en a pleins d'autres, mais jamais au niveau de Jay, of course! :bleh:

bonjour! ...I was wondering if you anyone knows how to say " I went shopping". I am having so much trouble with the word shopping.. coz in the dictionary it says "faire des course" ... and in school we use the word.. "magasiner"... Man, I don't think I should even trying helping you cos I can't remember most of my French.
Mais, je pense qu'on utilise le mots 'faire du shopping'.
I think 'faire des course' is for grocery shopping. I have never used the word 'magasiner' before. Maybe that's Canadian French. I'm quite sure people in France don't say that.
yz You sound really fluent in French!!! My gosh, I didn't really understand everything you said. Could you teach us some more? :wink2: I think my biggest problem is sentence structure. I tend to translate stuff directly from English, which is definitely wrong!!
Call me outdated, but the only French artiste I know is MC Solar

what a nice thread!
i love french, i did it for one year in year 9 but realised i really did not have the brain capacity for 2 languages at once (+jap) so i dropped it. but i still love french!
i think one of my main triggers for learning french was madeline i love her! i think it's one of my favourite childhood cartoons
now let me ask tout le monde one question: tu envies ton papa avec tes problemes d'argent?
hehee quite random, but i think that's the only d+m question i'm able to ask

haha, okay, i give it up. looolz. french is indeed very difficult!! i'm studying french the 4th year now and i still can hardly say a sentence properly loooolz. and the grammar *dying* i envy all those who can speak french fluently, like my teacher. i'm always like that o_O when i hear her speaking so fast and so fluently and so.. dunno. haha. but the cutest i think is when lil enfants (children) speak french. that's really cute!! =D
oh yea, sorry for the mistakes i made in my first paragraph. bear with me!! =D (my english isn't better either. hahahaha)

waoouu that's a very hard subject ! you made always those LITLLE mistakes but every foreigners who are learning french do the same mistakes : feminin/masculin lol
when you talk about something general don't forget to use masculine.
for example you said L'exploitation deS immigrants chinoisE" ... there's no E only chinois =p
and another mistake " le déclinE démographique" déclin is always masculine decline is like from the verb "décliner" je décline, tu déclines ,il décline ...etc this verb means decline in english .. voila =p
Bon courage pour tes examens, si tu as besoin d'aide, juste demande-moi

wheee~ that was MY topic in french class the past months!! i'm glad it's over. hehe. we read sooooooo many texts about l'immigration, la violence à l'école, and so on. and i wrote so many essays about that topic. hehehe. well, if you need anything (like the newspaper article i got), i probably can give you one or two textes. perhaps you can make use of it. just tell me ^___^ btw. the texts are really baby-french (otherwise we wouldn't understand. hahaha. we're so bad in french loooolz)

I just took my french test ^.^ It felt easy as I was taking it, luckly there was a lot of grammer cause thats all I seem to be good at, cause vocab is kinda hard, although I must say half the time if I just say the word in english and make it sound french its right....I feel bad for my friend though she's in Honors french and she already knows like what seems to be a billion tenses half of which have such hard exceptions its hard to even figure out when to use. I felt bad since here I was complaining over when to just figure out when to use Past tense and Imperfect past tense (imparfait) and she has to figure out subjunctive tense...
