A lot of people I've talked to call Jay a 'wannabe' rapper. I don't really understand where they're getting this from; I mean, seriously, how can you get more 'rappy' than songs like 'Shuang Dao' and 'San Nian Er Ban'? Is it because he doesn't just do rap, and does other musical styles as well?

What do you think? Is Jay a 'real' rapper, or does he just 'rap on the side' or something like that? Myabe because he mumbles more than other rappers?

And anyway, who would 'real' rappers be? I'm not familiar with any Chinese rappers other than Jay, and I must say that other than Eminem and Linkin Park, rap I hear is pretty crappy.

I don't know, just coming from North American culture and seeing a lot of Rap I don't think Jay's much of a real rapper. He didn't grow up that poor if he had private piano lessons from the age of three. Don't get me wrong, I love him and he's very talented, I just don't think he has the "street cred" to be a true rapper. Mind you, I don't like real rap but I like all of Jay's songs, so I don't mind, hahah! He's cooler as himself than as a rapper. :bleh:

A wannabe rapper? What is consider rap nowadays? I think its the misconception in America that you have to grow up on the streets or been a thug or grew up in poverty to "Rap", because every rap artists in America talks about this in at least one of their songs.

The difference in Jay is that he's better off and unlike others, he didn't have to go through this, but music is music. And if Jay expresses it in this way with his OWN style and OWN uniqueness, those people should just le it go cause there's so many branches of "rap" that its hard to really say, "oh yeah, this is a true rap artist"

jay is defnitely different from other rappers i know. he's got his own style. i especially like that "yi ba tsaang, tsang tsang tsang tsang tsang tsang tsaang, tsang tsang, tsang tsang tsang bien da lun" effect he did for ti tian. majorly unique.

I think some people are too used to American rap so it seems weird to hear chinese people rap. Every musician is unique in their own way and Jay have his own style of rap. Unlike Eminem and LP, Jay's rapping is soft because he mumbles.

If a 'real rapper' is one who is black, swears a lot, constantly grabs on his crotch, comes from the ghettos, basically doesn't know what grammar is, then no, Jielun isn't one.

He gets flak from stupid people for rapping. Yeah, whatever. Just because he's Chinese. I've heard this from my friend: "C (Chinese) rap = Crap."

Whatever. The blacks don't have a patent on rap. so what if they started it? Doesn't mean that other races can't do it.

So if people start giving Jielun crap about rapping in Chinese, just ask them to get a pair of glasses. Obviously myopic.

jay is the diaoest rapper ever. he may not be the typical rapper or the usual rapper we see on MTV.. which would be black, swears a lot, wears baggy clothes, has too much bling blings on his neck and stuff like that.. but he's got his own style. and a cool one at that :wink2:

whoever says jielun is a wannabe rapper i bet haven't listened to him rap. my advice? try listening to some of his songs and judge for yourself.

i personally thik the term "real rapper" is vague. i to lyk jayz rapping because itz very unique. He is also very fast at it and makes it sound awesome. probably the most uniques thing about his rapping is that sumtimes he singz in a different tune to the meldoy, not following the melody and it gives it a starnge but great sound

i agree that his rap style is unique compared to other rappers....i like the rhythms he uses for his raps....it feels good to rap his raps...unlike some american rappers whose rhythms are quite strange and not as catchy as jays....besides i like the meaning he's trying to portray in his raps....esp in ti tian, nuo fu......

Well, I don't think Jays music is even near authentic "hip-hop", but rapping...isn't that just a form of singing? At least it is nowadays, and the way Jay does it is just another form of singing. Most of his raps are nowhere near freestyle rap though. He uses both melody and set rythm to express his words, thus putting more emphasis on creating good-sounding songs.

i think jay is definetely a rapper... isnt rapping just kinda saying the lyrics.. pretty fast and isnt that what jay does? yea it's true american rappers hav the bling and girl and the baggy clothes in their music videos... but jay is a rapper.. that i know.. he's just diffferent.. or mayb cos it's that he doesnt hav all the hand motions... u kno that eminem.. jayz.. and everyone does.

Hmm I guess "rapper" is the same as "singer" to people. What about rappers who begins to sing as well as rapping? Would people still call them rappers?

Well, obviously that Jay does not rap like those American rappers. That's because he is chinese! and growing up in a different culture he has a different way to rap. so i will still call him a true rapper, a CHINESE rapper ^^, not a WANNABE >< because he does not pretend to BE a real one, he already IS. i admire him for being different from other rappers. he is very unique, isn't he?

besides i like more his rapping than the american because of the rhythm, the voice, EVERYTHING! :excited:

Yea totally agree dianilla! And somehow, the chinese rapping of Jay is kinda better, it incorporates melodies instead of pure rap, and doesn't swear! not giving bad images to younger jay fans! And like, you actually tell the difference between Jay's songs! Jay is a real rapper alright!

Yeah me too. I think he's really a true rapper.. I really like how he spell all those words with unclear voice.. To some people maybe they think it as a blurish talking but to me, it's really cool and it's really unique. So i think he's a real rapper

His rapping is comparable to bone thugs, where they rap to a melody. He definately has a distinct style of rap, but i wouldn't call it "real" rap.

I would equate real rap to be able to rap over a beat (not associated with music), where lyrics arent prewritten, more like freestyle.

Woah!! who called him a wannabe rapper!! i angry hor!! no lah, joking, i think he is really great in rapping, i mean, in Ninja, i totally could not catch what he was saying the first time i listened to it!! but i think different people have different concepts about rap bah....for chinese rappers, he is probably the best!!

real rapper? i think that if a real rapper is someone like eminem or 50 cent, Jay is not a real rapper. But jay can rap, and thats good enough to make him a real rapper :)

he is so diao in my opinion that he is not satisfied with just being a rapper and hence want to try out all kinds of music that he loves!
