The Rose, 蔷薇之恋 (Qian Wei Zhi Lian), is a new Taiwan "Idol" show that came out in 2003. It is another adaptation of a Japanese comic. It stars SHE, with Ella as the main character BaiHe and three new comers, Joe Cheng(Kui), Jerry Huang(Jin), and Lu Ming Jun(FuRong). We've discussed this show a bit in the Joe Cheng thread, but I thought I should bring it to the wider public and for those who haven't watched it, I HIGHLY recommend it.
I watched it recently and I have to say I love this series. I think it's the best idol show since Meteor Garden 1, maybe better, but hard to compare since I didn't watch them at the same time and hard to recapture that MG feeling again. I don't watch many of these types of shows, other than MG1 and 2 and The Rose, I've watched a couple in between and didn't really have high expectations for this show. First off, I looked at the cover picture, two guys and a girl, old story? Second most important, checked out the hotness of the guys, and to tell the truth, neither of them grabbed my attention. I thought Joe Cheng(Kui)'s hair was way too long, it was like F4 wannabe, but overboard. I thought Jerry Huang(Jin) just looks ok, but a little weird. Both extremely tall. But little did I know, once I started watching it, I was surprised by the story telling, character development, and touching storyline.
So what's it about?
It's about a girl, Baihe, who finds out, after the death of her grandma, that the mother she thought had died when she was young, didn't, that she's actually the daughter of a big movie star. So she goes to look them up and only to find 3 rich spoiled siblings, who all share the same mother as her, but all have different fathers. That's right, 4 marriages, and 4 kids. There's FuRong, the oldest sister, Jin, second brother, Baihe is the third, and Kui is the youngest. Complicated family, so the story is the relationship that develops between these four characters as well as with their mother as they come to get to know each other, depend on each other, and become a real family. Lots of twists and turns, many funny and lots of emotionally charged moments.
So how can you have a love story with people all related to each other? This story touches on taboo subjects of possible homosexuality and incest. But it does it in a very touching and sensitive wayl. But more than the taboo, the story is about love, lost love, family bonds, and friendship. The characters are extremely well developed and you get to know each of them very well. The story is well developed even though it kinda drags a some places. It's not as plot driven as Meteor Garden I think but more character driven. It's also a little more heavy and less sunshine than Meteor Garden. I had to have the tissue box beside me at times, even watch some scenes 2nd, 3rd time.
Favorite Character
Well for all who know me in the Joe Cheng thread (http://www.jay-chou.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=9069), know that I'm a Kui fanatic. What can I say about the character? At first I didn't have a great impression of him, bad attitude and girly hair :? But the more I watch the show, the more I realize how wonderful this very complicated character is. I have to say he is a mix of Daomingsi's childish arrogance and Lei's wiseness and sensitivity, but MORE sweet, MORE wise, MORE cute, MORE childish, MORE funny, if possible. The first time actor, Joe Cheng, that they picked for the role is spot on perfect. He IS Kui, and from what I've read, maybe embodies the character even better than the original comic depiction. His acting is very good for a first timer, very bold and expressive. His outward appearance can only be described by one word, beautiful. The more I look at
him, the more I like him. I would say he's not one of those “shuai ge” that one takes to immediately, but there's something very interesting about his face that makes me want to look at it more. I've grown to love his long hair, it fits the character very well. I never thought I'd like a guy who is so effeminate, but he mixes that feminity and masculinity very well in the show.
Memorable Scenes
There are a lot, I'll come back with them later seeing as my post is long enough already. I would love to read what you guys have to say. :)

As good or better than MG 1, you say? I might have to look into getting this...but I'm kinda wary because I was really disappointed with Love Storm, after getting it because I really like Vic Zhou. It was so lame and melodramatic...is The Rose anything like Love Storm? As in cheesy and exaggerated, or is it in the same relatively serious style as Meteor Garden?
Guys with long hair have always been my thing...I love long hair on 'em, especially on guys from wuxia stories :)

Do look into it. haha I feel like I'm their sales people, trying to promote it. :D
I have seen Love Storm and it's not like that. Although it has its funny and wacky moments, they're not as caricatured as Love Storm. It definitely is quite serious since the topics it touches on are more sensitive. The theme is more realistic than Love Storm, but then again, how realistic can an Idol show be? Some scenes are heavy, but it's always interspersed with light moments, so it's not a drag to watch.

Excellent; I'll be sure to look into this. Wish Vic would be in it, but hey :) I really couldn't bring myself to watch more than a few episodes of Love Storm, especially with Ken killing my suave image of him with his ridiculous snorting laugh (cringe). And that made me mad, seeing as I actually bought the thing, too.
Thanks for sharing info about this!

haha calcifer10000...that ken laugh drove me insane too!!! not that i liked him that much to start with....but yeah the laugh was majorly cringe worthy....!
jakinni, i don't really see the comparison between meteor garden and the rose.....
i havent seen it yet, but from your description and the pictures, they seem very different!!! :glug:
the guy, joe cheng, looks a little like ekin cheng to me.....hm.....

Hi roche, I didn't mean that The Rose's storyline is like Meteor Garden, because it's not, completely different story. Sorry if I gave the wrong impression. I'm just saying that compared to the tons of idol shows the Taiwan has spawn, I think this show is the only one that measures up to the standard of MG in terms of keeping my interest and involvement with the characters. I used few Meteor Garden examples to just tell you guys what to expect in the characters and the a feel for the story.
Hope you check it out. :)
Ekin? Hmm, I've never heard of that before, but I have read and agree that in certain pictures and certain expressions, Joe looks like Edison Chen. Same type of mischievious smile.

yeap, i've been watching tons of not-so-hot taiwanese drama serials after MG, hoping for another "hit"....
never quite found one though....
seems like our sentiments are similar in this regard :bleh:
i'll definitely check this out after my finals! :)

Well, to me, The Rose are very melodramatic type, with a hint of humor. And... I would have to say this... if Kui doesn't exist,... I might not like this serial at all. He's the best character in the show, even better than Ella.
The show was VERY boring in the beginning. I bought this serial for the sake of watching SHE acting... coz I'm quite curious. And ... because I saw Kui in the trailer, and Joe Cheng is quite the type of guy that makes me goes... "Wow, who's that hot guy?". Okay, back to the story, the first couple of chaps... I was like..."Dang, this show is extremely boring."... but I decided to keep watching since I already bought that thing.
Okay, my review... I'l'l start with the downside of the serial:
To me... the show is quite ridicilous in some points. Like.... how pathetic their mom was... practically sleeping with every guy she met and had kids from different guys... I don't know,... to me it's quite... unrealistic. And these four main leads (Kui, Bai He, Jin, and Fu Rong) to me are like a bunch of lazy people who never gets out of their mansion and get a real life. So.. I was like... these character lives in such a trouble-free life, and only focusing on love and family relationship.... and they're all mature adults for goodness sake... but they live their life like a bunch of useless people. Okay... that's all. And ... the story is a little bit too draggy. And the thing about how Jin (the main lead) escaped the pain by drinking and drinking... to me... as the lead male character, it's quite *sigh* disappointing. To me, Jin had always been a very weak helpless guy... who needs Bai He to protect him. While my idealism tells me that the guy is the one who should protect the girl. And that's why I fall in love with Kui character.
And... let's talk about Bai He character. I think aside from the so-called fatness and ugliness of Bai He are the only minus point from her. To me, her character is nearly perfect. I don't know whether this kind of girl is ever exist. She's so selfless, dilligent, sensitive, kindhearted, innocent, and loving. And... I kinda hate to see a nearly-perfect character... coz... it's almost unreal. And... the fact that Bai Hei could just let Kui hugs, kisses, etc etc. her while in reality.... she's in love with Jin... to me... it's kinda hard to accept. I mean, if I don't Love someone, I won't let him touch me.
And... I think the show exposes too much kissing scene. I don't despise kissing scene, but when it's done way too many times... it became not-so-special.
The Good side of the serial:
KUI!!!! He's the best character of the show. Just like you explain it jakinni, Joe played the character well, as if I'm seeing this Kui character in him. He's the type of that childish but sensitive at the same time. He knew how to treat the one that he loved, and to me.... if he's not in the story... I would think the show sucks big time.
And the dragginess of the story actually let us all going more in depth with each character. I loved how they turned the annoying Kui who didn't like Bai Hei in the beginning, until he finally fell for her. And I actually like how he could sometimes be very aggressive to pursue his love, but at the same time, he could give it up for his own brother.
And of course, as much as this show has a lot of unrealistic side, but it's still sweet and it gets you hooked with the story. There are so many touching scenes.... really beauitiful touching scenes that I actually cried or moved. And if I were to rate this serial... it would be the 3rd best Taiwanese serial after MG 1 and Love at the Dolphin Bay.
My personal best scene:
It would be when Kui got out of his house, because he thought he's not the part of the family. And Bai He was searching for him in the rain. And when she spotted Kui walking in the sidewalk, she asked the cab to stop and she found Kui was nowehere to be found. An
d she broke down and cried in the rain, when suddenly Kui was there... coming toward her, comforting her, and sheltering her with his coat. Gosh... I could actually see how romantic and protective he was.

Yeah, someone who's watched the show! :D
sUm^MeR, I agree with you on a lot of your points. I basically thought Jin was pretty useless and kinda annoying. That borderline alcoholic thing was a bit much. It just seemed like he was taking advantage of the situation. After I watched it, I basically went back and watched all the Kui scenes and skipped over most of Jin stuff. Plus I don't really think Jerry can act, he does a good crying job, but sometimes a little too much tears.
I also agree with some of the kissing scenes being too much, but then I didn't mind any of the ones with Kui involved. I think the one I hated most was near the end, that very very very long one. Somehow it disturbed me.
About Baihe, I sorta began to resent her towards the end, because she's too nice and considerate, almost to the point of absurdity. "We can love Qing together", oh come on! And her constant self depreciation was a little over the top. But then, maybe I'm just biased towards her because of I like Kui so much and I didn't like what was happening near the end.
As for the relevance to reality, well what can you say, it's one of those shows. But I have to say the underlying theme of love and family is relatable.
Memorable Scenes
Too many to pick a favourite. I can't decide between sweet moments and sad moments. I love them all.
I also love that scene in the rain after Baihe finds Kui. It just showed their strong bond. And the hug and he kisses her on head, showing that he was glad she found him just as just as she was. Plus he looked hot in that long coat in the rain.
I really liked that lipstick scene between Baihe and Kui after she had the fight with Jin. Just that moment between them, if Kui looked at me like that, I'd swoon and die.
A very touching scene was Kui's confession to Jin. Wow, just the way the whole scene played out and everything leading up to it with him first confronting Baihe, and then not being able to say what he really wanted to say. Plus his real motivation for the confession was just so moving.

O O O... jakinni, the part where Kui confessed to Jin... I thought he was about to say something about him and Bei He. But when he kissed Jin, do you feel somewhat... irked? I don't know... it's like.. GAHHH, he kissed Jin?!? Hahaha, not that I despise homosexuality, but the idea that he openly kissed Jin was quite startling. ^^;
And... yeah... that "We can love Qing together" thing is quite lame. I mean, Bai He literally NEVER really know Qing, how can she loves Qing THAT much? To me, she's being too considerate and she tolerated a lot of Jin's stupidity.
You know what... I the part where Kui thought he's not Bai He's brother? I was so excited... because I thought. YEAAAA at last, Jin and Kui has the equal amount of possibility to win Bai He. BUt when it turned out that Kui was really her bro... I was so pissed off. Because I think it's really a pity that Kui has to lose just because of the fact he's her step-bro. To me, it's kinda shows that Kui didn't have the chance to win since the beginning.
Oh... the way Kui stared at Bai He in the lipstick scene was.... *sigh*.... soooo romantic. I could just faint. ^^
Oh, I think the guy who pursue FuRong is quite .... annoying. I don't know... I never like that guy... since the beginning till the end.
The funniest scene, I have 2 in mind:
1. When Hebe was sleeping and she snored soooooo loud. Kui was staring at her in disbelief and he screamed on top of his lung (his childish way of screaming is soooo amusing), and woke Hebe up. Gosh, I couldn't stop laughing over that.
2. When Kui got a love letter from a guy (because he thought Kui were a girl), in the class. And he scold the guy, "Wei, wo shi nan ren!". I was like ROFL ROFL ROFL.. that was sooo funny.
Oh... jakinni, did you remember the part where Kui was posing as a magaine model, where he wears this sophisticated outfit and has his hair tighten at the back... he was soooo unbelievebly HOT. I was like... swoon swoon drool!!! And I kinda hate that laced silk robe that he wears everyday in the house. It makes him looks like gay. >,<
WHat I'm so curious was.... like how many pop noodles does Joe has to eat to shoot the entire episode?? Coz he eats noodle sooo many times, and whenever I see him eating, I feel hungry myself. lol.

I haven't seen it and already I say...NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! :) I can't sit through a drama with any of the girls from SHE in it. Yes, I'm closed minded, and no I don't care. I love Jerry way too much. He is NOT replaceable. MG is NOT replaceable. Ok, maybe MG2 cuz it sucked. BUt yea :)

I was surprised at that kiss too. It didn't really irk me, although I was surprised that I wasn't totally turned off by it. He makes even doing that look alright.
I watched a bootleg copy, so basically the first 19 episodes are good VCD versions, and it ends when Baihe and Xiaofeng were going to help her get over her snoring. And the next thing I know in ep20 is Kui and Baihe at the cottage together. I was like WTF??? Did Baihe find out that she loves Kui after all?? They skipped 2 episodes and replaced it with 5 crappy TV rips of the remaining parts. So basically I found out about the whole Kui maybe not Baihe's brother thing like after the fact. But even that, watching Kui and Baihe together, and he kissed her and he was like "First time you closed your eyes", I was very excited too, and when she kissed him back!!! But no, Jin had to come in and spoil it all, bastard, even though it's not really his fault. It felt pretty good when Kui punched him.
Those two scenes are funny!! And about him looking like a girl, when I was watching it, my aunt came in, and she's like, wow, that guy can totally pass as a very pretty girl.
Another funny scene:
Is the whole Jin coming to Kui's apartment and tells Baihe to go home so he could be Kui's "No 1". And the way Kui kinda egged Jin on because he knew how uncomfortable he was. It was sooo funny!
And when Kui was sick and Baihe was taking care of him and he was all sweaty, and she's like take off your clothes, it's all soaked, and then she BULLIED him into taking off his underwear too when he didn't want to. And he's like "There's only one reason that a guy takes off his underwear in the middle of the night". So funny!!! Come to think of it, most of the funny stuff came from him.
And and Kui and Jin and Baihe went to the cottage for the first time and Baihe got sick and the power went out. The scene the next morning...with all three of them....
OMG the model part!! The way he posed with the girl model, SOOOO HOT and SEDUCTIVE!!!! Picture time!
http://club.netandtv.com/picture/pic2003-8-20/2003820175653627.jpg
Another scene that I found very sad was the first time Kui confessed his feelings to Baihe when they were alone in the house and the burglar came in. That afterwards scene went from light and funny to heavy and sad so fast. And when he ran out into the rain and screamed, and said "Yes, I was lying" to Baihe. I felt my heart breaking for him.

I've watched the first few episodes, I think up until the 10th episode, I havent had time to watch the rest. I think it is a VERY WEIRD show!
Some parts are serious and emotional and stuff, but I dont really care about those, I watch is for the comedy! I agree that the characters are very developed, and have unique personalities. My favourite characters so far are mou ji, bai he and kui! I hate the other characters, jins always too depressed and he has a drinking problem, their mothers a bitch, the sister is stuck up and that nanny is always too serious. its so funny when mou ji tries to date the sister even though he has no hope, and she gets all pissed off. (Ok, I dont know if he suceeds, as i havent watched enough, but dont tell me lol). And kui is always hungry and eating. He always watns food! Whenever bai he's around, he always asks her to make instant noodles for him, that lazy bastard lol. Although he isnt entirely useless, eg the robber incident. I just feel sorry for bai he, as she gets bullied around, but I find her comical and playful as well.
btw, I skip the kiss and romance scenes :bleh:

jjfgirl, You don't have to replace Jerry if you don't want to, but if you watch it, you might feel compelled to put Kui up there as #1. ;)
sUm^MeR, I forgot to say, but with the amount of eating he does in the show, he probably is told to show up without eating any meals. I also feel hungry when he eats too, he makes the food looks so good, even if it's instant noodles.
QuietBoy, it's ok, you don't have to hide it. We won't think less of you for liking the drama parts too. It takes a big man to admit this ;) I like the teasing and playing that goes on between Kui and Baihe, like when he helps her go on the diet, 1/2 apple per meal and he pigs out in front of her. What are some favorite funny moments that you like?

im watching it right now!but i keep on missing episdoes..so annoying!anyway my favorite is kui, and i feel so sorry for him that him and bai he are blood related..and jin just gets me annoyed! bai he does too a little bit, she keeps on waiting for jin, when kui is right there for her!but...they wouldn't be able to end up together anyways...one part i remember most is right after kui kisses jin, instead of telling him their secret...and bai he is on teh bed, kui comes in and tells her to sleep and stays with her until she falls asleep..and the way they're holding hands together is so sweet!i really love that part...there's also a lot of other moments with kui that i like.

Claps for Jakinni for starting this new thread!
:D I didn't know actually so many of us in the forum watched The Rose.. :bleh: esp Quiet Boy! Ok.. it's just me I guess.. I thought guys wouldn't watch all these shows..
Anyway... it can't really say it's better than MG..becos The Rose and MG are two different kinds of story lines, you can't compare it.
The Rose is more to family problems and but MG put more attention to young men's relationship..
However.. I prefered The Rose  I liked the show a lot.. it's so touching..
Well.. I like the big sister's character a lot, Fu Rong.. I think they did get together in the end with Mao Ji..
LOL! :D

chiccox3, I also really like the part where Baihe held Kui's hand as she fell asleep, so sweet, shows how much she cares about him. I felt so bad for Kui at that moment. It's like he's put all the pressure on himself and he still has to show a brave face. I hope you don't miss more episodes. Come and discuss more if once you watch more! :)
Most of the people I see here are those that have visted the Joe Cheng thread. Hmm, not many people have seen this show?? I'm surprised since I heard that it was pretty popular in Taiwan, wonder why it hasn't caught on. Hopefully more people will tune in!!!

there's too much funny scenes in the show, almost every episode there'll be funny scenes.... Kui really eats a lot...There's this part whereby Kui was supposed to talk about not going out to Jin and Bai He annd he was stuffing himself with chips and talking non-stop, saying that he does not wants to be like some country bumpkin, haha. And Kui always has the most cruel words to used on Bai He.
Summer: totally agree on the lipstick scene.... almost melted...haha...
Jerry sure is cool and handsome but he always have the same expressions! And I also kinda sick whenever Jin wants to be with Bai He but will always held back by Qing. Jerry is more appealing in real-life on shows.
The main turn off of the show.... Joe's hair.... He looks SO much better with his natural hair.

im really hating the video shop where i bought this series!!! they gave me a bad set! all the cds are scratched! ive only watched the first hour because i haven't gone back to ask for replacement and im so curious why is gui acting gay!!! is he really gay?? anyway i found myself laughing already!

You should as for a refund! I hate it too when i buy at ongpin! They are all pirated! Majority of my cds aren't working anymore.

OMG!! I heard about this show quite a long time ago and I watched bits of it on TV but I was just too lazy to go and buy/borrow the VCD to watch. But the other day I just suddenly decided to go and borrow from my friend to satisfy my curiousity once in for all. NOW, I really really love this show!! I haven't finished watching the whole thing yet but I just watched 6 VCDs at one shot. I had to stop cos my dad wanted to watch TV. Can't wait to continue later
I think this show is as good as MG!! I can't say which is better cos I haven't watched the whole thing yet. Though it's slightly draggy, the acting is better and there's more depth in the characters. I like how everything is somehow related to flowers.
I don't really like the parts with Mao Ji. I skip those.
And I must say that Kui is growing on me. My gosh he looked so damn HOT when he posed with the model. I mean seriously!!! I've seen Zheng Yuan Zhang before a lot of TV and I could never understand why people like him but now I sooo.... see it!! Ahhh.....
I like Ella in the show too. I thought she acted really well. She really looked like such a simpleton and really ugly, especially when she cries. I've got a friend who refused to watch the show cos she doesn't like SHE. But really, once you get over that and start watching the show, you learn to love the show.
Anyone's got the soundtrack? Thinking of buying it.. hmmm
Miss_gun
05-08-2004, 04:33 PM
dazzlette, The Rose OST is a must buy!!!
Those songs are so good, of course, Ye Zi is such a good song!
I love Ye su you yi tian the most.. this song rocks!!
Hehe.. but I thought Mao Ji was funny..
dazzlette
05-08-2004, 04:37 PM
I absolutely love the song Ye Zi. But it wasn't motivation enough to buy the soundtrack. But after watching the show, I'm falling in love with every saong.
Who sang Ye Xu You Yi Tian? There's another english song that they always sing. What's the title of that one?
Miss_gun
05-08-2004, 04:40 PM
Ermm... ye su you yi tian, I think JS shuang ren zhu who sang it. The it's a sister and brother team up.. the brother composed the song and the sister wrote the lyrics. The sister is the one who sang it.
Oh, and the english song is 'The Rose', Ah Sang sung it again..
dazzlette
05-08-2004, 04:49 PM
Was 'The Rose' originally an english song and it was sung by a western singer? It seems so familar. Ah Sang's voice is beautiful but the pronounciation is not very clear.
Miss_gun
05-08-2004, 04:52 PM
yup! It was written by.. ermm..well I dunno. It's a female singer, she composed the song and wrote the lyrics too.
hahaa.. I know, the pronounciation isn't that clear, but still, it's a good song.
and The Rose soundtrack do have 2 backgroud music too.. pretty good^^..
Chun Li
05-08-2004, 05:44 PM
You guys, I think that tall guy is so ugly though... I find him to be an ugly version of Freddie Prinze Jr.
dazzlette
05-08-2004, 06:58 PM
Chun Li.. which tall guy are you refering too? They are both tall!!
Ok I know you're talking about Jerry Huang. Well, I don't think he's good looking either. Even though he looks caucasian.
I have a question. What flower is Jin, Qing and Fu Rong? I know that Bai He means lily and Kui means sunflower.
jakinni
05-08-2004, 08:04 PM
fish7 Scratched and missing CDs when you purchase?! I've heard of that from rental stores, but never from buying. That's bad business.
dazzlette I'm so glad you like the show. Yay a new member to the Kui fan club. He does look very good as the model. The one thing I don't really like that much about the show is too much crying by Baihe and Jin. It's just too much sometimes. And I don't like to see a jocky man cry so excessively, it's a put off.
I also really like Ye Zi, the MV is so sad, made me misty watching it, but then again maybe that has to do with my blurring of the show and the MV story.
I don't really know what the other flowers are and in the show they don't really show any images of them. They do show sunflowers though when they go to the sunflower fields, very pretty.
Chun Li You've seen the show? I agree, I can't understand what others see in Jerry. He's face looks very uncomfortable to me. His lips...don't like. But then again, it's all about Kui anyway.
Miss_gun Ye su you yi tian is really a Kui song. Everytime they play it, I think of him. I also really like Chong Fang Ji Mo, though I don't think that's in the sound track, it's that kind of r&b sounding song that plays during Kui's remembrance of happy times past.

I got the soundtrack and the actually have pictures of each flower printed with each character but I'm still unable to identify them. Maybe when I'm free, I'll try to scan them in see if we all can guess together. Sometimes when they have too many crying scenes, I just fast forward them. hee hee
Hey BaByBLuE637 I haven't got a chance to watch Dou Yu yet. It's probably next on my 'To watch' list.

i really didn't like SHE before this show because ive no interest in girl bands and have not tried to listen to their songs, but after this show, ive listened to some of their songs and now they're one of my favorites! hehehe!
dou yu is soon to be aired by cetv. i haven't watched this show. and i've no plans before reading your posts. i didn't think it is good. hahaha. now im looking forward to it!

I love today's episode. I think it's Ch.21. I cried when Kui found BaiHe and just embraced her. It was so sweet!
It was so hilarious when Jin barged into Kui's home and then he's like "wo jue ding le!" and then Jin's attempt to kiss Kui sometime after that. Hahaha...

im watching the series right now~ im only half done~ and i love it..I LOVE KUI too~ hes so funny...its kinda digusting tho how he likes his blood-related sister...but still i like the fact that hes so into baihe...but the thing is the drama seems to be dragging...it keeps on talking about the same thing over and over again..how kui likes bai he, and she rejects him...it's not really moving..right now...

i guess i just missed your post by few seconds....hahaha!
omg... i never knew there's a Rose thread here!
i like this show a lot. It's hilarious! There's just 2 things I don't understand. First, I know Bai He and Kui have the same father but how come in the beginning they said she's some ohter guy's daughter? I miss a couple of episodes where they reveal each of the children's fathers so that's why. Secondly, didn't Bai He had her 20th birthday like a couple of episodes earlier, why did they say she's 22 now (I believe the story didn't fastforward to a coupel of years later).
jakinni
07-24-2004, 11:46 PM
Ok it's kinda complicated so bear with me. The father Baihe has always thought was her father, he died when she was very young, was the love of the mother's life. So, somehow during their relationship, she thought he was cheating on her with her best friend, so to get back at them, she cheated on him with the best friend's fiance. And that's when she got pregnant with Kui. Baihe is the bestfriend and the fiance's child, but since they died in a car crash, the guy the mother was in love with adopted her and told her that it was his and the best friend's child even though he never cheated on her. To understand why he lied to her, I guess having watched the rest of the episodes you can gather some reasons. I didn't totally get why he did that, to set her free?? Or he knew he was going to die soon and didn't want her to suffer, rather have her hate him instead? So yeah, both Baihe and Kui's father is the bestfriend's fiance while Kui's mother is the mother on the show, and Baihe's mother is the best friend. Was that confusing?
And the story actually spans 4 years so she started out 18 and then she had her 20th birthday where she got all drunk. And at the end at the wedding it was 4 years because the Po Po specifically said that she can't believe four years have passed during their teary talk before the wedding. So it's to show that the characters have grown so much and got to know each other through a long period of time, which makes more sense. I don't like it when in shows everything happen in a span of a few months.
bethie_me
07-24-2004, 11:58 PM
Thanks for explaining Jakinni! That made a lot more sense now. I can't completely understand what they are saying so I was confused the whole time about the family tree thing.
jakinni
07-25-2004, 03:41 AM
Yeah, even though I understood everything, it still had to take a few rewinds to completely understand all the cross connections. When Fu Rong confronted the mother about it, she went through it so quickly, I was like huh?
And of course what's a post without saying something about Kui, I felt so bad for him while he was eavesdropping and found out the truth and then he went on that little motorcycle ride by himself.
bethie_me
07-25-2004, 04:43 AM

hey jakinni.. Actually I kinda understand why Zheng Ye (the guy the mother loved the most) lied to her. Did you not explain it cos you want @lly to discover it herself or you don't really know it? :? Though I might not agree with the reason, I think I do get it.
Frankly I think I liked this show more than MGI.. I was glued to the TV for many hours straight and I couldn't really stop. I only stopped when I had to wait for the next volume to arrive.
I think the VCD version I watched have some parts cut out. (Homosexuality is very sensitive here!) So I wonder if there were any juicy scenes I might have missed out?? :brows:

 gbert! Nice to see a guy expressing his interest in this series! :D What did you like about the show and who was your fav. character? Interesting to see a guy's perspective on this.
dazzlette, as for why Zheng Ye lied to the mother, if I remember, they said something about him feeling that if he continued to be with her he feels like he's going to die because he loves her so much but she was a free spirit and he felt she would leave one day?? :? I thought this reason was kind of weird while the reasons I listed above for @lly seemed more logical. Frankly, I don't remember too much about this because all of my extra attention had been devoted to Kui. So any enlightenment from you would be appreciated. Oh and as for if you missed any censored stuff, I don't know, how much guy-guy kissing did you watch? :shifty:
*sigh* I agree with you girls, even after all these months have passed since I watched it, I still can't help joining in the conversation about the show because it's I loved it so much. At the time of watching and immediately afterwards, it like seriously affected my life where all I wanted to do was find out more and more info about it or rewatch some scenes. And like dazzlette said, I had a mini heartache too, as if I was experiencing the pain Kui was going through.

07-26-2004, 04:30 AM
Miss_gun I know how it feels like to watch on TV. After every episode, you'd probably be screaming at the telly cos they always end the show such exciting parts. Actually I heard about the show since last year but I never got down to watching it proper cos I'm not the sort who likes TV serials. I knew it was showing on Cable TV( Azio channel) but I never tried following it. Later, I decided to fulfill my curiosity once in for all so I borrowed the VCDs from my friend. hehehe I would watch the show late into the night and sometimes I would tell myself, 'Last disc. After that, I must go and sleep cos I got work.' But I would often end up watching 2 or 3 more discs. I usually stop at the boring parts (i.e. some scene with Mao Ji :shifty: )
Ok the reason why Zheng Ye gave up Han Li is cos Han Li is too willful (ren xing) A Han Li is the sort who just can't settle down. She's too spoilt and always gets her way. So she will end up fooling around even though the man she loves most is Zheng Ye. Zheng Ye loves Han Li too much and so he knows that one day he won't be able to take her betrayals and might even kill her. So he rather leave Han Li, use the baby as an excuse and let her hate him so that she can continue to live. Ok this is the reason I gathered. Anyway how did Zheng Ye die anyway? That wasn't very clear right? :worry:
I only saw one part where Kui kissed Jin but it was more like a quick peck than a proper kiss. I thought they had some bed scenes?? :brows:
Haha I think I'm a little quirky. I like to pick up weird details when I watch TV so I sometimes miss certain main actions... :wink2:
jakinni
07-26-2004, 04:59 AM
Yeah, that's pretty much what I gathered too, but then from the way Han Li acts, I would have never thought that she'd cheat on him, except for that fiance guy. Anyway, yeah, it wasn't very clear how he died, just from illness.
You only saw ONE kiss?? Which one?? :shifty: Is it that dramatic one before Kui left the house? Or ones where Jin didn't know?? Kui kissed him in the first episode, and yes there were a lot of bed scenes too!! Especially one where Jin kept getting drunk and ending up in Baihe's room, so one day Kui decided to switch places with her and that was hilarious when Kui was kind of egging Jin on, but then Jin called his bluff and wanted to get it on with him. Did you see that one? That was so funny. I wouldn't mind describing them to you, but I'd have to know what you missed as my memory is getting a little fuzzy as to what occurred in which episode.
dazzlette
07-26-2004, 05:21 AM
 Oh yeah I forgot about all those times where Kui kissed Jin secretly in the bedroom. Somehow I only thought of the dramatic one. hehehe maybe I remember it cos it was so dramatic and sudden.
hahaha the cast was like in PJs like 80% of the time. There were just sooooo many bed scenes.
:? I don't really remember Kui egging Jin on. Can you describe it a bit more?? I only remember one where Jin was dreaming of Qing and then he reached out to touch the person sleeping beside him with long hair but it turned out to be Kui!! heheheh I found that really funny too.
I remember another really hilarious one in the house that Kui was staying when he left home. Kui was actually talking to Baihe and then suddenly Jin appeared and decided to stay with Kui. He then tried to sleep together with Kui but he was very uncomforable.
Oh dear I don't think it was that long ago since I finished watching the show. Yet so many scenes seem kinda fuzzy to me now too..
jakinni
07-26-2004, 05:30 AM
Yes, that's the scene I'm talking about, then one where Jin was dreaming of Qing. Like first you see Kui's long hair and Jin hugging him. Then Jin finally figured out it was Kui and he was like, how come it's you? And Kui's like of course I have to protect Baihe. And then Kui suggestively pulled his PJ off one of his shoulders and he was like, "lai ba" (come on) or something in that really serious and seductive way. He thought that Jin was going to be scared off by that but it turned out Jin was like, ok let's get it on and Jin leaned closer and closer to Kui while he backed way more and more. And even then when Jin was asking him if he wanted to go through with it, Kui was still trying to act tough and said something like I'm gamed if you are, even though he was really freaked out by Jin already. At one point Jin even said now I'm at the point of no return. And that was the whole scene where Jin was pulling Kui back into bed as Kui was trying to leave the room, and at one point Jin was even riding on top of Kui. When Kui finally got out of the room, he was so scared of Jin. But only to be pulled back into the room by Jin again.
And yes, that scene between Jin and Kui at Kui's place was hilarious!! Again, I love how Kui was teasing Jin the whole time.
Another one I found really funny was when Kui was sick and Jin somehow ended up sleeping in his room and Kui took the opportunity to kiss him except Jin woke up and asked him what did he just do. And then Jin kissed Kui.
Oh man, so many funny things I still remember now.
I don't like it when in shows everything happen in a span of a few months.
thx for the explanation. I totally get it now. Hmmm... i think the reason why he left is because he's sick. I remember correctly that Jin said that when he was six, Zheng Ye wrote him a letter and then Jin "thinks" that Ye wrote him that letter when he was in the hospital and that he knows he'll died.
4 years? wow... I always thought it was a year! But in my opinion... it doesn't feel like the 2 year gap between bai he's 20th birthday and then suddenly she's 22 in a couple of episodes after. The events that happened just doesn't matter up to the time. but oh well.
dazzlette, I think jakinni is talking about the scene where after Jin discover that it's kui, kui was trying to scare him off by pretending to wanna do it with him. Instead of backing off, jin insist on doing it and kui got scared was trying to runaway but jin tackle him!

And jakinni I don't remember Kui being sick and Kin kissing him!! I remember Kui being sick.. (there was a scene where Baihe asked to take off everything including his underwear!! )

07-26-2004, 06:18 AM
Hmm, that may be around episode 16? I don't have my VCDs so I can't check for you, sorry!
Jin kissing Kui was after that whole hilarious and super cute underwear scene with Baihe. Kui went back to sleep and when he woke up in the middle of the night, Jin was drunk and sleeping beside him. And Kui's like, wow, perfect opportunity to violate him! :D And he kissed him. And after that, Jin's like what did you just do? And Kui had his back to Jin and was freaked out. Kept saying, "it's a dream, it's a dream. Not only that, it's actually a nightmare. Ok when I turn around it's all going to be a nightmare" But of course, Jin was looking at him. And Jin was like, "is this what you did?" And he pulled Kui's head close to him and kissed him. Not only that, but when Kui tried to get away from him, there was another funny wrestling match of them two on the bed. Then suddenly Jin just fell dead asleep again, and Kui had to crawl out from under his body and escape the room. Shocking both Kui and Baihe who saw it from the door.
You really missed all that??!!?!?! Rewatch!!!!!!!!

So she was hooked on it too after I started showing it to her. And one of the episodes, there was like a long shot of Kui's face, and she's like, now he's the good looking one here (and not Jin). :bleh::roll: I find it hilarious. jakinni.. You have such a cool mum...I mean which mother would watch idol dramas??? :bleh:
My mum just sticks to her same old HK drama serials.. I dunno. After a while I kinda find them all about the same.. same kind of story, same kind of dialogs, same actors/actresses all the time..
My mum was absolutely freaked at Kui's long hair.. she was like 'Is that a man or a woman?? Eeee.. the hair is so long. ' And she went on to make a face like this ---->
I gave up trying to make her like the show. Anyway it saves me the trouble of having to translate everything for her all the time... hehehe
jakinni
07-27-2004, 04:07 AM
Haha, she's not that cool, it surprised me too. And then she was asking where can she watch some more Zaizai shows after MG.
If your mom watch HK dramas, how come she can't understand the Taiwanese ones? I mean there's caption afterall. :?
dazzlette
07-27-2004, 04:18 AM
Your mum's into Zaizai?? Actually it's not really that surprising.. Zaizai has the kind of look that most 'aunties' (middle aged women) like!!
My mum's from Malaysia and the only chinese dialect my mum knows is Hokkien. And she only knows how to speak it and not read or write it. But she does understand some very basic Cantonese and Mandarin. The HK serials she watches on Cable TV have English subtitles though it's dubbed in Mandarin. And even if she does watch the serials in Cantonese which is shown over the Malaysian TV channels here, they have Malay subtitles which she can read. But when it's Malay subtitles I think she's guessing the meaning most of the time.. :bleh:

When you first tell someone about the show, what do you say? I tried to introduce it to people but I've had little success. People always give me these faces----> or
when they hear about the homosexual parts and Kui with long hair...
I tried the quiz but I don't really get it :? I was happily adding up the points when I realised there was no conclusion below...
u don't hafta add up any points. they'll tell u who u are and u just find out the conclusion f/ the name u got!

My Mom thinks I'm crazy for watching the show! Especially when she sees the guys do their thing, lol. And she thinks Bai He is a complete ben dan for no reason. My friend's parents BOTH watch the show! Which is so cool! >_< They are so into it too!
dazzlette, I'm fu rong! I'm happy with it because she's cool :) I just read your other post and realize that your mom likes zz too. Me and my mom use to be a zz fan too. In case your mom is wondering what other drama zz has starred in is: Poor Prince, Love Storm and Mars.
haha when my mom saw the guys kissing and the whole incest taboo, she got freak out! But I like it actually and I enjoy watching it haha. It's something different than what we usually see.

Hehe when I first started watching it and I was telling my friend about it at school. I had to draw a pedigree chart for her to understand who's related to who. But she was hooked from the moment I started talking about it and she was in love with Kui even before I lent her the video and she actually saw what he looked like, which she loved too! :D So then we spent endless hours chatting about Kui's personality and physical attributes.
But of course a guy friend was there too when I first started talking about it and I talked about how Kui kissed Jin when he was sleeping in the first episode, I can see him slowly turning his head away and diverting his attention elsewhere.
My friend's parents BOTH watch the show! Which is so cool! >_< They are so into it too!
:D That's so cute and cool!!!!
For the quiz, I was Fu Rong too, though some of the answers it was kind of hard for me to pick yes or no, so may not be too accurate.

Woww.. some mothers and parents are so cool! My mom is the typical type of TVB fans..
Anyways... I did the test b4.. and yes I am Fu Rong in the show. I quite agree with the results, cos it's quite similar to me in the real life..
Speaking of the Han Family, I do love Kui, Bai He and Fu Rong. I always thought Jin was.. Ahem.. a bit too much with Qing..

So many of you are Fu Rong? :?
Woah jakinni I never managed to 'convert' anyone before. If my friends aren't put off by the storyline etc, some of them just refuse to watch the show cos they don't like S.H.E. and won't give them a chance. They think they're too cutesey and irriating. I dunno some of my friends are a little biased towards Chinese artistes.
Actually I liked Jin a little more in the beginning. I thought it was nice that he was so 'shen qing' (deep hearted? ) but later it got too much. After a while I just got irritated with him. Kui is a much more endearing character.
Does anybody know how long is "The Rose"? :? Its soo long!! At first i though it was already going to end because they are going to show "Snow Angel" but after a few days i just notice that it wasn't the one that will replace "The Rose".

awww... I only started watching it since.. yesterday.. =( and it's already at chapter 31 >.< so sadd.. this sounded like such a good series.. and what i've heard about joe and the model part.. hehe he looks really cool doing those poses =) does anyone know which chapter that was? hehe
Right now i'm at chap 31 too! Today's ep was okay. It mostly talk about Han Li. That woman is just weird. She's having a baby at like age mid forties. I can't wait for tmw's ep. I saw the preview and Han Li slapped Bai He on the face. Why?? I thought they're okay now, but guess not.
What do u think of the guy who likes Fu Rong? After 31 ep, he finally takes off his hat.

I don't like Jin either! I always get annoyed when I see him! He's such a waste of time to watch! Jerry made him so expressionless. Like when he told Bai He that he loved her, he just plainly said "wo ai ni" twice. I really hate those Jin and Bai He mushy scenes. They really bore me. Unless Kui is in them, lol. I was so happy when Kui slapped Jin! I almost gave him a standing ovation.

It grossed me out when Kui and Jin first had signs of loving Bai He :bigyuck: ...
I don't think The Rose is better than Meteor Garden... Coz the acting in The Rose were not as good, even tho they're pretty good-looking! :hmm: Also, MG I was not as good as MG II.
The thing I like about The Rose is that it's very angelicish... Tian Zhen  ... it's really innocent love, but weird things happen... Overall, I think the mom was the best actor  and my favourtie love was Fu Rong and Mao Jie. Just plain fun... even tho the Mao Jie guy sucks at acting !

MWUAHAHAH! I've already stated my dislike of Jin countless times so I won't repeat myself. Just want to say that it irked me everytime I have to look at his face. It's the combination of the character and Jerry's weird face.:rasp:
EDIT: I thought the acting in The Rose was pretty good, esp Kui. Anyhoo, but then again I thought MG1 was better than MG2, and that Fu Rong and Mao Jie was the more boring of the romances, so I guess we differ in opinions.

yeah, mao ji also annoys me...especially when he's panting after Fu Rong like a dog.. his acting also is pretty much boring. and also the way he talks! grrr.
but i like Fu Rong coz she's cool and smart.
today's ep (32) is ... what can i say. Jin is so mushy. The things he said to bai he, man way to scare a girl. I think he came on a little to strong on her. 3 more eps to go and i'm done!
mao jie's voice sounds a bit girlish! but the funny thing to me is dat he never dated fu rong yet he proposes to her?!
btw, jerry looks old... he doesn't look like 23 or 24... more like 27!

I watched the whole series on VCD and the only parts I fast forward most of the time are
1) The parts with Mao Ji
I dunno I just don't like Mao Ji.. he mumbles a lot and I don't really get what he's trying to say..
2)Jin and Bai He scenes towards the end
I didn't like all the mushy-ness :rasp: and they made those scenes really draggy too!!
3) Bai He crying
I found these draggy too.. they will play Ye Zi as she cries and it's just too repititive
I think the acting in the Rose is much better than MGI or MGII..... F4's acting is only just passable..

Mao Jie didn't annoy me, but just that I felt like the scenes were wasted on him when they could have shown me Kui instead.

There's some songs from the OST in this thread: http://jay-chou.net/forums/showthread.php?t=3488&page=1

ep 33 was sad. i felt so bad for kui. I think that kui suits bai he more because he's always by her side when she's side. jin is a pathetic loser imo. he just gets himself all drunk and when he finally find someone he loves, he makes her sad or say things these creepy things.

hahaha! yeah! i thought it was creepy too! and not just because of the Jin but also the song itself. it was kinda bleak and ugly. i usually mute the tv when that song is being played. hahahaha! :)
i just finished watching the show.
Negative: (the last ep)
1.) Gotta say the ending was very lame. They spent the whole ep focusing how to slim down bai he. What's wrong with being slightly overweight? As long as you're healthy, you're fine, especially she's not fat at all.
2) The way they got married. When they decided to get marry, i was like, "that's it? No proposing or anything?"
3.) The final kissing scene. I think it would've just better if they shorten the kiss a little.
Positive
1) It's a happy ending
2) Bai He was so pretty.
3) The mother turned "good"
4) Fu Rong decided to married Mao Ji
5) That speech Bai He made at the end

I watched a bit of this show because it was at the end of the tape my friend lent me that was this other idol series "The outsiders" (WHICH WAS HOT HOT HOT)
And i found "The Rose" HILARIOUS...kekeke well more the Kui and Bai He combination..it was just funny to watch.. because the little bit i got to watch of this series was on Kui trying to make Bai He lose weight... IT WAS just RIDICULOUSLY funny^^ i LOVED IT..i'm waiting to go back to Shanghai so i can buy all these drama series..and i'm definately gona buy The ROSe
i think bai he rejected that guy because she felt that he's too safe or something?? she wanted passion love and not those calm types.

Wow! Cant believe that there's actually a thread on the Rose here which is one of my favourite Taiwanese idol serial dramas! :bleh:
Hmmn...I can see that Kui's the overall favourite character here....I like him too cos he's so caring, understanding (Such characters are usually my fav in any serial dramas anyway... ). Hmmn...this serial makes me take notice of S.H.E as well and they are also presently one of my favourite artistes(think someone mentioned this as well in the earlier posts).
Btw, there's something abt the mum which I dun q understand. Rem the scene whereby she lost the baby and disappeared from the hospital and sneaked home? Everyone crowded around her bed and suddenly, everyone was like they finally understood y the mum's always so cold to them bla bla bla....But I dun understand! What was the mum thinking all the while?? :worry:
Btw, I think the reason why Baihe rejected the guy was because she was in secretly in love with Jin mah...She cant possibly accept the guy. Also, maybe that guy's aso not her type (As if Jin's her type.... ) thats y she feels like a protected kid while with him...more like father-daughter or brother-sister than those boy-girl thing.
piggy36, u no what, I think bai he and jin's relationship is more like brother-sister. The way he talks to her just reminds me of a brother figure. And have you notice that he always pats her head
about the mom, let me try to explain it. I think she's just like this because when she realize that she was wrong, it's already too late because she's all alone so she, mind as well, continue her behaviour. About y... i'm still puzzled.
Speaking of fave character, at first I don't really like kui that much because i think that he's always giving pressure to bai he, don't u think? At first, he knows she's his sister but she keep telling her that he likes her and kiss her and stuff, but later when i saw what he did for her, i felt sorry for him. I felt so sad when i saw his expression in the scene after bai he and jin, u no, "did it". The ending scene was sad too how he said, "take my part of the love and add some more to it." Poor guy did just about everything for bai he and ends up nothing.

omg...i hated the ending, it was so gay! i think baihe should of ended up with kui, too bad they're reallying brothers and sisters. i think they match more tho. jin and baihe are NTH alike, everytime they make out or kiss it digusts me and i change the channel, but when baihe and kui kissed it was so sweet. ok to tell the truth i think ella looks really good(well, better) in the last ep when she was in the wedding grown( I LOVE THAT) and with dark makeup. i think ella should wear her makeup like that more often

LOL after 13 pages of discussion, does anyone actually LIKE the ending? :glug: Don't worry, if you're a lurker, speak up, we won't chew your head off. Just curious....:shifty:
well... i don't hate hate the ending because jin is a nice guy too but kui is much cooler and bai he is more comfortable with him than with jin so i think the ending would've been better if she ends up with kui instead. However, since the person who bai he likes is jin the whole time, then it's good that she ends up with him. It wouldn't be a nice ending if she suddenly changes her mind and go with kui. Morever, kui is her brother. Unless they change the plot a bit, the ending so far is good.
When I first watched the ending, I didn't really like it but after rewatching it a couple of more times, I like it. The wedding scene is so cool. It looks as if it's a real wedding because both Jerry and Ella does have that "gonna be married" face.
After they got married, I really do hope that Jin would stop singing that lullaby to her haha:D

Same sentiments! Initially, I will juz keep on 'scolding' kui...on y he always gives Baihe so many probs...making her so troubled but then he really loves her (though I still cant understand y a younger bro can have love feelings for his sis... ). I am touched by what Kui did for Baihe in the end...unsacificing love.
As for the ending, well...since Baihe loves jin so much and Jin also feels the same for Baihe, its good that they can end up together. I have nothing against fairytale type of endings. If Baihe is to end up with Kui, they will have to do something to the storyline about their blood relationship which will be ultra stupid....meaning after the 1st time when they ran off after misunderstanding that Kui's father's not Cao Zhi...they going to have another scene to say oh, actually Baihe's father's not Cao Zhi afterall?? Get what I mean?
So I feel the ending we saw is oredi the best that could happen. Kui at times can be rather wilful and childish so I feel, he may not be able to take as good care of Baihe as Jin. Jus my two cents' opinon.....
jakinni
08-14-2004, 10:05 AM
Gah you all are so rational about it. I think in the end I didn't really care and just wanted Kui to be happy, even though by the end I kind of didn't want Baihe to get together with him simply because she's been longing for Jin the ENTIRE time. It's like fine Baihe and Jin gets their happiness, whatever, but what about Kui? So it was not so much that I wanted him to be with Baihe, it's more that I wanted him to be happy. *sigh* But I guess these things just won't be so memorable if it weren't so heartwrenching.
I thought the wedding at the end was soooo crappily done. The mom is a big movie star but all they can scounge up are some BALLOONS in a dingy church with guests who look like extras pulled from the crew or right off the street dressed in casual sweats and jeans? :glug:
was han li ever married to that guy that she loved?
if we're not rational, then people would complain! like even though mg 2 ended with dms n sc together, many fans complain bout it.
btw, is that really how u cna earn reputation points, by providing mirrors in jay dl? haha i was always curious about those reputation points.

That is one of the ways you can earn reputation starting yesterday. It's just incentive to get more people to help out. Previously, rep points weren't assigned for that, you earned it through making a good impression on other posters.
Yeah that's what i thought too but in the last ep, han li said, "i want bai he to wear the wedding dress that I 'plan' to wear when i marries [that dude]," that's why I got confused.

Sure Viv, but first you gotta tell us where you left off.
Well it was the first time Hebe came into the show. Not quite sure which episode it was... but it was when Hebe came into their house. Thanks so much jakinni~ ^^
jakinni
09-01-2004, 09:12 AM
Ok so Hebe is a childhood friend of Kui's and she's been in love with him ever since. Her mission is to get Kui to fall for her. When she found out Kui was in love with BaiHe, she was kinda mad, but soon was won over by Baihe and they became good friends and Baihe tried to help her to get Kui. But of course no budge from him and eventually she gives up and decides to leave. Kui and her say a nice goodbye to each other and she went back home.
Somehow Jin manages to get book published, and so he becomes famous plus the fact that he's a good looking son of a famous movie star, there's a lot of fans that start coming to their house. So he decides to move out so to not disturb everyone in the house and Baihe's all sad over it. After he's settled, he starts calling and talking to Baihe and Baihe starts going to his house and basically being his maid. So their relationship gets better and he gives her a necklace, not the one from Qing.
During this, Kui kind of suspects that he and Baihe may not actually be brother and sister, so he asks his fav uncle to investigate for him. At this point, I think Baihe and Jin are getting closer. But then he pushes her away or she finds that he can't let go of Qing and accept her. Kui's uncle says that their blood types are different so Kui thinks they may not be related, he goes to talk to Baihe who has just had one of those cry/fights with Jin. She kind of rejects the whole idea of him not being her brother, she doesn't like it because she wants to be selfish and have a brother who'll always be there to comfort her when she needs him. So Kui is also torn over what he wants, to be her brother, something that Jin doesn't have, or unrelated. Anyway, at some point, Jin tells her to choose Kui and she cries and asks Kui to take her away. So the two run away to the cottage and may have been close to going too far when Jin comes chasing after them and telling them that yes, Kui is actually her brother. Apparently the father had remembered his blood type wrong and thus misinformation. So that was quite sad for Kui.
After all this is a whole part about Baihe going back to her old house and seeing that the roses are still planted there. Apparently Hanli has been keeping up the garden all these years.
Jin has a change of heart and wants Baihe to wait for him to be ready enough to have a relationship, so now they're all good again, going on dates and stuff. Kui is pretty sad around here. He confronts Jin about what he means telling her Baihe to wait, and Jin says wait until "he's ready to ask her to marry him". Kui sad, brings a lot of alcohol to have a heart to heart with Jin. At the end of the night, he says "I'm leaving my sister in your hands" and they hug and Kui cries. Sad sad sad.
So basically now that Jin and Baihe are going to get married, Hanli has to change the stuff on the birth certificates because they are legally related. But she doesn't want to for some stubborn reason. Then she reveals she's pregnant and keeping the baby. Later she has a miscarriage and a life and death situation so that pulls together the whole family and they cry and they talk and eventually all conflicts basically resolved. Hanli changes the necessary documents so now they can get married.
Last episode Baihe loses weight and they get married, Kui giving her away at the wedding and saying "Love her with my portion as well" or something like that.
And we find out that by the time they get married, it's already been 4 years since Baihe moved into the house.
Sorry if I'm remembering them in the wrong order or forget some stuff, who knew even a show I've seen a many times the memory could still get blurry.
OMG. Ahhh Jakinni you are the BEST!

.....Basically, the show is happy ending for everyone except Kui. I wish I could just take him with me so we can elope together. :bleh:
Neh...I wish Kui can continue loving Baihe....something less than those romantic chemistry but more than normal sibling...haiz..get my meaning? Anyway, in that case, IMO Kui wont be able to elope...cos that will make Baihe sad and I'm sure he wont wanna see that. :worry:
actually, on the day of bai he's wedding, fu yong ask cat wut type of wedding ceremony would they have on their wedding. cat laugh and said he couldn't believe what he was hearing. fu yong said aren't u listening and cat answer, "ting dao le, nu wong"

The Rose was nominated for The Best Drama series of the year for Taiwan's Golden Gong Award,金鐘獎. It's like the most important Television award for the Taiwan TV series industry.
It's very slim to win for this award becos the other nominations aren't Ou Xiang Ju at all. They are more like serious type of drama..
I was rooting for Joe Cheng and Ella to win a nomination, but.. sigh*

Wow, thanks for the news Jans! That's really great for the show. I guess it just confirms that we have great taste in shows.
Joe should so get an award for newcomer or something of the sort. I'd give him an award just for looking so damn yummy.

Joe Chang looks great in the show! :-) He acted very well for a first timer too. I’m waiting for his new show with Lin Yi Chen (the leading female role from Love Contract). :excited: The show is an adaptation from a Japanese manga and there a Japanese drama done on it too. The show is hilarious. The part of the guy will suit Joe well (I think). Plus the fact that Lin Yi Chen is a good actress, I was hoping that the show would be good.

To clarify, the guy who plays Jin is not Joe Cheng. Joe = Kui, Jerry Huang = Jin. And sorry, I don't have any info about Jerry.
But glad to see another fan of the show.

The Rose is a very good series! yeah, when it wa on tv in the US, i thought it was going to be boring because i didn't really know the people in it, only s.h.e. but after watching the first episode, you get interested and it catches your attention and makes you want more! :-) When i saw joe(kui) i thought his hair was way too long and mistaken him for a girl a few times! but after a while he looks cuter and funnier! it's so funny when you see him yelling at ella...she looks like a boy in that series! it's so mean when they call her a pig and say she is fat....she is not that fat! this was a very good and funny series! i like/have interest in these actors now! hm....so yeah if you haven't seen it you should watch it! I think its as good as Meteor Garden, but you can't compare it!

yeah ella is not that fat...but if you see in the manga.. yuri was fat....(in the series ella as yuri)...but in this film she wore sweatsuit allthe time so she looks like fat...
before i watched this series i don't like s.h.e (and cursed myself why i would buy this series ) but now i think it's great!!
