honestly, i hate viet music period. i just want to give them the opportunity to prove me otherwise but it hasnt happened.

wats worse is those story songs or something. i dont kno what theyre called but they start out in a regular conversation n then bust out w in song about wats goin on. bleh :rasp:

n u kno those instruments that go bong bong bong when u pluck the string w ur finger. ahh. i dont think its the mandolin cause i like that. wats worse is that my dad is learnin how to play that bong bong bong w an electric guitar. :crazy:

trish's 1st album...half of it was nice. the other half was not so good. after that it went downhill. all the songs sound all like cause she sings it all the same.

Oh yeah, the story/song with the really high-pitch singing is definitely annoying. My mother likes listening to it and she would always buy the DVDs of it. It drives me up a wall!! :oops: I guess a lot of the "elders" really enjoy listening to it. :D

The instrument that goes "bong bong bong"? Is it the zither? LOL No clue!! Like how many strings does it have?

I never really buy any of her single albums, I only buy those 2 CDs The Best of Trish albums.

i kno old ppl r weird :bleh: . it really sucks cause my parents live in the los angeles area n they get the vietnamese station on the radio. ahh n its always on in their car. thank goodness i dont live w them anymore n im rarely in their car cause that thing cannot b changed from where i am seated.

n u kno wats weird? my parents understand some chinese n dont like english yet i always listen to chinese music. but when they drive my car (on rare occassions) they always turn off my chinese music but if the radio is on the stereo is kept on. wats up w that?

haha bong bong bong. i have no idea wat zither is. n i have no idea how many strings it has cause i only hear it.

haha trish has the 'best of' already. how many cds does she have. 3?

heeey..I'm jen and I'm also vietnamese, nice to meet all you other jay chou viet fans. I'm glad jay is known world-wide. I'm from california and even though i dont understand much, his music is really pretty and that's what makes a good artist, when you dont understand the lyrics but you listen to them anyway because it just sounds good.but umm...Trish is okay..her voice is starting to annoy me..and lynda trang dai is old..but there's shayla and i saw her in concert. For some reason, i like her alot better than trish.

whos shayla? i never heard of her. could u upload a pic for us to see how she looks like. trish is done n over w/ :tongue: she was at an asian concert in san diego a yr ago. she was w/ a bunch of other viet singers. it was called "Pala by Night" how original i kno :dry: Pala is a casino on indian land reserves in san diego.

What Lynda Trang Dai got sued by Madonna? Just because of that one song she sang "Fame" or whatever? :crazy: That's crazy!!

And yes, Trish has 3 of the "The Best of Trish" albums and I have all three of them. :laughing: Trish also has that new DVD with all the songs from the beginning of her career, but haven't buy it since many of my friends think it suck. I seriously don't like wasting my money on something not worth it. :angel:

Shayla is Thanh Tuyen's daugther, one of Vietnam's premiere singer in the 60's and 70's. Her aunt is Son Tuyen, also become a well known in the 60's and 70's. She as well work in the same music company as Trish which is Asia Production.

I don't like Shayla whether she's pretty or not. Most of her songs are ehhh, sorry to any of her fans in here. :oops: Talking about Vietnam, my gosh they need to really need to build up the country. Did you know you can live for 1-2 months in Vietnam with only $40-$50 bucks, talk about a unique lifestyle and jobs over there pay so lowwww.

Anyhow, never been to any of Jay's concerts so I don't know. Maybe you should try asking someone who been to one of Jay's old concert and see how to get his autograph. Just remember me f you do get a chance to get one!! :tongue:

aye, trish can't sing, neither can shayla or a lot of the new singers. and lynda trang dai was horrid from the start.
and if you really listen, those "songs that tell stories" aren't really that bad. they're called vong co, by the way.
give vietnamese music a chance, and you'll find that there ARE some gems out there, you just have to look really, really hard.

Hazel - Hi there! Are you guys Viets living in Western Countries or in VN?

Not really into Viet music, but I like Cam Ly..just one of her songs though! It was about war and suffering..never got the chance to find out the name. I also like the song from some singer " Nguoi Trinh Nu Ten Thi"..such a sad song!

Don't know about others, but I live in America don't know how I would survive if I did live in Vietnam. Couldn't stand the humid and hot weather!! :wacko:

I like Cam Ly too and her two sisters Ha Phuong and Minh Tuyet, but probably prefer Ha Phuong love her Que Huong songs. And the song "Nguoi Trinh Nu Ten Thi", love it and I most agree the lyrics is sad. :cry:

by the way, does anyone like nhu quynh?

Who doesn't like Nhu Quynh?!! Always been my #1 favorite singer beside Phi Nhung. Anyhow, her songs are wonderful each and everyone of them. :excited:

I think everyone likes Nhu Quynh. It's been a looong time since I've heard something from her and thought it wasn't at least decent.

Anywho, who's everyone's favorite singer? My whole family thinks I'm really strange because I like listening to songs by Tran Thai Hoa and Tuon (?) Ngoc. Unfortunately, I only know the PBN singers. And maybe Van Son and Bao Lim, but that's because they're comedians and I used to watch their comedy sketches when I was little. XD~

Nhu Quynh is cool, she has an amazing voice. Also like Phi Nhung...she's half French I think, but she is so pretty and a great singer! Some VN singers are trying to become westernised now and its funny and embarassing when you know they look like try hards.

I am a weird Viet for the younger generation as I like to listen to the oldies stuff like Vong Co and stuff. You need alot of skill to be able to sing like that!

Btw, how'd you guys become fans of Jay?

hong_trang - Sorry for not replying, I have been busy with school and at the present moment, I am on holidays..but I still have plenty of work to do! :dry:

I do understad Viet, it was my forst language and I learnt how to read and write in Viet since I was 5.

I am hopefully going to Taiwan at the end of this year! I hope I can see Jay somehow! If not, buying his CDS is good enough for me! :brows:

My family lived in the South...until they cam over here in the 70s.

I was born in Australia, so I have been living here for 17 years :-) ! I will be turning 18 in a few months! Its great that you go to uni, you know that? Very lucky.

I got told that Jay is very popular in Saigon, or Northern VN cause it is closer to China and Chinese speaking countries, so that is why they are influenced with that culture. :whistle:

i've finish it this morning ,i tried my best during the exam so the result is good, now i'm very please.

i wonder :worry: why you said that went to the university was great. you 're living in aus which has got a developed education and a lot of famous universities, you're very lucky because you have many chance to study there,the uni's door is open to every one .r u intend to attend a uni? :grad:
in viet nam it is difference, the uni entrance exam is very very difficult ,just about 6% contestants pass peryear,i'm one of those lucky people.however , the education's system is very bad,it makes every one disapointed.
you're a very big fan of jay,aren't you.you're very enthusiastic and active.
actually , i always hope to make some more friends around the world and condescending with every one but because my E is not very good , i'm affaid that they can't understand what i say.

I definitely want to go to Uni. The Entrance exam is called the HSC (Higher School Certficate). I will be doing all those 6 exams later this year, to get a mark called the UAI (Uni Admission Index) to see if I qualify for a place in Uni.

Why dont you become an exchange student to another country for University if the education system is so bad? By the way, CONGRATULATIONS on getting in!

I have a sister who is 5 years older than me. We get along very well adn we are very close.

Yes, I am a very active and big lover of Jay Chou. He is incredible! Very DIAO! If there were any VN singers like him, I would be interested to hear their songs....but some of the singers aren't very good, so I listen to Western music and JAY! hehe, he gets a cateory all of his own! hehe

Cam Ly is an ok singer..when I was in VN 2 years ago, I heard a song of hers that left a preety deep impression on me...it goes something like this:

Also, I downloaded GMC - Because I am a Girl song and it is amazing! Such a sad song! But I love ballads...

and to answer your question, english slang is a really weird thing, mostly because the people who speak english come from so many different cultures that it is no longer just one language-- it's a mixture of all the languages, assimilated and changed to sound like one.
and as for "surf the thread" or "surf the net", i guess it's like luot song, you ride quickly and smoothly over the internet... unless your internet connection is like mine, then it's as slow and bumpy as a xe do. =D

Tet is going around but i always find nothing to do during the Tet holiday.

i'm not a fan of viet's modern music, expecially oversea viet's music like PBN. may be you're living abroad so you dont know, recently copying music is banned. so there wont be many copy song any more. i do agree with this, i hope one day(may be not so far)viet music would stand in our own, the future fot it would be brighter.and who know there would be a very famous singer that shake the world(just like our Jay:tongue: ).imaginative i am?

poor me, in ha noi, there isnt many ppl know jay. U know,i dont know where i can find jay's cd, even his poster in ha noi . i have been trying to find it in vain.

I can cook..but nothing major and gourmet like...

I just came back from training and I am still in my karate gi..It was such a good training session. I learnt new moves and techniques and how to apply them! :happy:

I will hvae to be making a few sacrifices this year in order to do well in my exams...so thats means less internet free time...but Jay will always be a high priority in my life...hehe..love that boy too much!

Right..I better go have a shower..I have a swimming carnival tomorrow..its going to be a blast! :D

but it is obviously that in vn studying conditions cant be as good as others countries like china (Hong kong), korea and Japan.
but it has a similar point is the puppils in those countries are always pressurized by their family . Every parents want their children go to university, it's the smoothest way to find a good job in the future, and even a partner ( it's the realistic in Korea,^_^ i know that because i watch a lots of korean films).

do your studying go well ?
i'm really curious about the study of foreign puppils. do they have to study hard?, how is the relationship between teacher and student? i watch tv, and i see that they're very equal, student can speak to their teacher like their friend, is it true?

You can't believe everything you watch on TV. Not all Koreans are like they are in series. You have got to understand that.

It depends on the student and teacher. Over here, when you're a Senior, the teachers teach you much better, cos you are an adult now. Some can talk to each other as friends, but you always have to have respect. Its just manners. :D

What makes you think we don't have to study hard? :dry: We are not born with a silver spoon in our mouths like all VN think we are. We have to go to school and achieve great marks to pass. We have to get into university as well. We want a good future. Its the same everywhere.

My dream is to get out of here, to get out of viet nam, to get out of this fucking school....School is really really boring to me....But i still have to go to school, to learn such fucking subjects that i even don't know why i have to learn that stupid things? Anyways, i have to try my best to learn well so that i can get out of here, can learn abroad, and make my parents happy and proud of my as they expect.
The reason why vietnamese students think that foreign students don't have to learn hard is that education in vietnam is more and more difficult. So.....almost pupils don't want to learn any more.

We get heaps of pressure here too...You can never finish all the work as there is more to be done. You have to remember heaps of formulas, techniques, historians...just to name a few...

I guess its hard to get into higher education in VN cos there are soooo many corrupt officials..

But just dont say that VN is the hardest cos I can definitely prove that there is a harder education system out there. Sheesh, I can't believe I am getting so worked up, but I hate it how the Cong Sang keep the citizens ignorant.

Do u want to know why i disapeared for such a long time. I'm so happy now be cause i've been to HCM city with my mon and my two cousins, i've come back last sunday.
hcm city is more noisy and busier than hn, i felt very excited, we visited every where ate a lots of strange foods( basically, in hn still have some of them, but the taste are different) and i was so happy because i've had a vcd :jay incomparable live concert, i bought in china town in 11 dist. althought it is not a original vcd, it's just a hi-qualily copy but i still satisfy( u know it's very hard to buy a cd or vcd of Jay in HN). Jay's so wonderful at that concert.
have u got one ?, i just ask for fun althought i sure that u got it.
may be i wont join in that social lounge, dont think that i dunt like it.
it just because i feel like i'm a fish out of water, i dunt know that u're all talking about and dunt know what to say.

To be honest, I am over the whole Jay-Patty rendevous. Everything I read is about them in some way or another. I like Jay as an artiste, not the state of his relationship with another girl. I think the reporters went a little too far with the two of them. But this incident has taught Jay a valuable lesson to be much more careful.

I do not have Jay's Live Concert DVD or VCD. Havent been able to find an original yet.

Where is the Chinatown in Saigon? I remember seeing a Korean BBQ there once, I was quite surprised! hehe...

My best advice to joining in at the Social Lounge is to state where you are from and to excuse yourself for not knowing what most of them are talking about, and then ask a broad question to get to know your fellow members more.

Next week I dont think I will log on often as I am going to Sydney via train to stay with my aunt and my sister for 1 week. I am sooooooo excited! It is going to be soooo much fun, all the shopping, boys, food, shopping, sight seeing, boys, food, shopping, shopping and more food. Did I mention shopping? :angel:

Korean BBQ is a way to cook food. I almost forgot not many people in VN know what BBQ is...its very common in most parts of Asia and the West. You know, "nuong thit".

Shopping in Sydney was soooo much fun! I saw plenty of Jay Chou stuff, but I refrained myself from purchasing them..I will get them as gifts for my birthday! :D

I knew this 4rum for a long time ago,but like i talk b4,bcoz for a long time,i was busy with another guys and i thought that i dun like Jay anymore,then my Eng b4 is so bad.So b4 dun like this 4rum anymore.However ,the situation changed.
I think this 4rum is very nice.The way the staffs manage this 4rum is really cool.I really admire the way the staffs do their works.Members here are also friendly.Then i found many interested things from here not for only Jay.

^^ its good to know some viet. . you dont have to be pro at it .. but considering it as your native language .. i think it would be shameful not to know how to speak your own language ..

when your living in the US or born here .. its very easi to forget who you are and go with the american way .. sometimes your parents make you go to viet school . .. but even if they do ... if you dont want to learn the language .. and yet you are completing the viet class .. you still wont learn well .. most of my friends that go to viet school doesnt even understand me when i talk in viet o.O ... they only understand their family's voices .. and they feel that it is embarrassing and humiliating to speak their native language in public .. i dont mean yelling in viet and stuff :D .. but just speak it publicly .. they would never do that .. i feel annoyed that i have such friends who can't stand their own language .. some say they hate their language .. :? .. that is scary .. hating the language you were born with . hating your culture .. your history ..

i think i as long as you no how to speak it and maybe read a lil or write .. you are fine .. even if you dunno how to speak it well .. but you TRY to .. that is good enuff ^^

wow.. my friends goto viet skool.. but i dont.. i learn vietnamese from ppl around me.. family mostly.. iv lived with Caucasians my whole life.. in every school me and my brother were the ONLY asian people.. haha so for awhile i was white washed.. but then when i got computer.. i started visiting some viet sites.. and then moms friends kids took me out.. so i got to know more viet n the viet pride hit me.. WOOO.. i love my culture.. we rock.. kekeke.. and my b/f is viet.. he immigrated over here when he was 7.. so he mostly speaks viet.. he's kinda teaching me it.. haha.. but im pretty fluent with it.. problem is my b/f is from north.. and im south.. sometimes i cant understand him.. haha.. so its hard coz of accents and stuff.. but yeah.. im chillin with him n his friends so more familiar with it.. im going to get him to teach me to read and write sometime.. thats just how much i want to learn my own culture cozz i lovee it sooo muchhh!! hahaa ..its also great coz every viet person i know LOVE that their viet.. and i have some Caucasian friends that grew up with viet ppl and r even more fluent then i am with vietnamese.. so its funny.. haha ..but yah.. its a shame some ppl dont like what they r.. you shuld be proud of your culturee no matter what you aree~~~ im certainly proud to be VIETNAMESE!~

hahaha..yeah my folks are the same..after all these years of putting me through viet school and all..I think they finally realised it was a lot easier to understand our vietlish..all other avenues were just futile..haha.. dad's pretty fluent anyway so that kinda didn't help our desire to learn..I remember my dad enrolled us and we didn't end up going for about a year or two before he enrolled us again...hahaha....though I did study all the way to year 10 viet..and now I'm all the way back at grade 1 (or so it seems) .. hahahaha.. :whistle: :rolleyes:

but now I'm trying to learn a gazillion other languages...canto, mando (just for jay :wink2: ), korean (for Lee Byun hun and all the other lovely korean actors..hahaha) , italian..

and yes trying to improve my viet..

I dont think being born in VN would make a difference in learbning viet if u moved to a foreign country at a young age. If u constantly speak viet at home and learn efficiently, you should be ok, but of course, u can never really compare with the viets bak in VN as they learnt it from a young age and thru schooling - we had to learn english..

Speaking of which, i remember when i was in VN 2 yrs ago, my cousin asked me, did we learn english when we were in yr3? haha..i couldnt help but burst out laughing - i went to an english speaking school, i had to learn it in preschool! haha..poor girl..she was soooo embarrassed after that..hehe

u guyz r lucky who can speak vietnamese fluently and understand it..it sad kuz i barely even kno it..so frustrating..my little cousin can speak it, understand it, and write it...glad her parents put her thru the school...i think its because being in a family of 12, the top half kno viet pretty good..butt the bottom half..which includes me, we can barely get by..the top half spoke mostly english to me and the youngesters...i speak most of the time english to my mom..or the words i dont know in viet i just say it in english..sure i should take some classes n learn my own language..try hafin my sisters help me, butt even in front of them i feel really stupid for not knowing enough viet..i guezz its just easier said then done...and with jay in my life..im soo much more interested in learning mando then viet...itz pathetic of me, butt thats how i feel..guezz i should learn my own language first b4 trying to learn another..should have done this a long time ago, butt im a procrastinator...shame on meeh!!!!! :oops: is there ne1 that can relate?

I studied viet for years but I haven't really learnt much..maybe I did and then I went backwards!!.....but then I never practised what I learnt so there's problem number 1 there..

I'd love to speak fluent viet..I didn't when I was younger but as you age...you really do appreciate your heritage..but I also love to speak canto or mando fluently too..that's me appreciating my future..hahaha..with JAY...Jk.. :wave: :D

Well I don't really listen to Viet songs...I'd rather listen to chinese, or Korean songs...not that I'm turning my back on my culture but I like the chinese and korean melodies more...Though I do not know much of what I am singing...I think I sing better in those languages than I do in viet...

Besides, I think that a lot of the meaning resides in the melodies...so without understanding the words, I believe that one can still understand the meaning.. :wave:

vietlish is just combining english and vietnamese in the one sentence...and having a western accent through out....the basic words, are usually in viet..eg..

He he,i'm Vietnamese and my Vietnamese language is very good.However,about 3 years ago,after i like chinese music,i really hate Vietnamese music.Bcoz the melodies of Vietnamese songs are copying from almost chinese music,then the lyrics arevery very nonsense.Even though,my Vietnamese is good,but i really dun understand what dothe lyrics of some Vietnamese songs mean.

i understand and agree with you about viet music copying chinese/korean melodies these days ... but i don't agree with wat you said that the lyrics are nonsense ... maybe if you listen to singers like UHP or soemthing .. all those lyrics are not realli nonsense but straightforward and notmuch of a poetic thing .. but if you listen to other songs by other artistes and composers it is realli poetic and meaningful ..
it might be that you don't understand the lyrics of the song thats why you feel that its nonsense ...
becuz you have to realize that vietnamese is such a language that if you know how to read to the sixth grade level .. you probabli still wont understand poetic phrases as easily as english phrases .. . but if you listen more and more the the lyrics .. you will understand it more ..
i think that our viet lyrics is realli wat exposes our sophisticated and poetic language

I agree maihuong, viet language is a very poetic language...

Nprob: the viet language orginally stems from the chinese dialect...and alot of the poetic phrases are a direct translation from chinese ....eg. the well known quote about fate...huu duyen thien ly...etc etc..is one such example..

the vietnamese melodies are different to western and chinese melodies...i don't know how to describe it but there is a different sound to each...for me, watching all those hong kong movies and growing up in a western society has meant that my ear has become accustomed to the chinese and western melodies. I remember leaving the house whenever mother put on her viet music :playball:..so I never really was able to develop an appreciation for the viet melody...

yea I know, well I'm much older now, so I don't really mind. I usually get my cousins to sing the remade songs in karaoke so its quite nice. I guess my viet is not good enough not take notice of lyrics. If I try hard enough then I will listen carefully to the lyrics, but usually I don't bother! Doesn't Paris by night nowadays always have those American born/grew up Viet singers that sing english songs a lot? I think they shouldn't sing so much english songs. Sorry if I am wrong! pyre=D "Milans small ironsmith" is the E name of the song. N the group's named A#( or La Thăng in vietnamese). It's so ridiculous, the title of the song is "Em hãy xem lại chính mình", it souds like one guy is souting at his girl friend, the lyric is absolutely nonsence. The inpostor's named Hải Hoàng, the man said that he had wrote it but 99,999999% the tune is copied from Jay song. He's so stupid to think that he can fool people (cause Jay's not very popular in vn) but the fact that there're many people in vn love Jay and they dont blind, deaf or dumb.
In Yan, we have been seriously critizing that group and ask them not to sing the song anymore or we'll denounce them to authorities.
U can visit Yan at this address: "yeuamnhac.com" , stop by box Jay( but the website is being upgraded now) and you'll find out the link of the two songs (believe me, the vietnamese version of the song is bad compare to the original one).

Thai, korean language are easier for learner to write, read and remember than chinese. Because they have the alphabet, you just have to remember the letters and conbine them and read. In chinese, you cant do that, you have to remember word by word and their pronounce.

I have to agree with some that Viet language at least you can sound out some of the words (thats is english is basically your first language/most fluent) even though you may get it wrong - it is better than cambo or thai where its all squiggles!!

I don't like the idea of how artists copy other people's songs, however there are some realllly good covers and the rest are crappy. I mean its not just asian people, its the western people too! But as long as they CREDIT who they are copying, and cover the song in their own style then thats ok! unlike some stupid bands like ENERGY (sorry to ENERGY fans) lol sorry I know its a bit off topic but I don't know any viet artists to use as an example

Yea I know what you mean coz you can take me as a perfect example lol I can't read or write viet, but because i can speak viet than reading a lot of words are very easy. I find that some words I can't read properly or at all are usually the words I don't know. I understand how the accent marks go, so I think I do pretty well at guessing. If I really wanted to learn it, I think it will be easy for me ^_^ I wasn't educated any Viet, just what I learnt from speaking to relatives - and well since middle teens I've been speaking more viet to my parents than anything else - so I'd say I'm quite fluent, yet at the same time it can be easily broken lol if that makes sense at all! Growing up in New Zealand and all.

UHP is Ung Hoang Phuc,a very famous singer in Vietnam.But i dunno why how can he be famous like that?

UHP is Ung Hoang Phuc,a very famous singer in Vietnam.But i dunno why how can he be famous like that?
Handsome?No,his face like a cochon(this is a french word,plz check the dictionary),so fat and looks very stupid.
Good voice?No,he can sing but for becoming famous like that i think he cant.
But many vietnamese like him bcoz the melodies of his songs but almost these songs was copied from the chinese melodies.
He is one of the representative for the Vietnamese music nowadays.I dont say all the Vietnamese musics and singer are bad but almost of them are very very bad.I hope one day,in Vietnam will have someone like Wang Lee Hom,can create some kind music like "Chinked-out", Ho ho.
