View Full Version : Do you think Jay would win American Idol or whatever Idol if he's not a singer now?

Well, was watching American Idol yest. It was the auditions episode. Was wondering whether Jay could win or not. Simon might say "Mr Jay Chou, please do not wear your hat. You must be confident first before making it as a successful singer!"

P.S: I dunno whether this is posted before. If so, well, then lock it. I always seemed to post the wrong things.

i dont think jay would join "idol" kinda shows in the first place
he's not...showy
he likes to make music not to be a big "star"/idol (although he is one)

Honestly, I don't think he will win. If I were to guess, the judges will smack him by saying his voice is not strong enough. Maybe they'll compliment Jay for his style. :)

maybe jay will sing one of his songs and the judge is impressed with him and offered him a job as a song writer.
but i don't think he will win

As much as I long Jay but no, not in a million years unless everyone sings llike WIlliam Hung in the competition then Jay would win hands down.

i think he will..cos i heard that when he was small... he did a re-mix of the taiwan national anthem....so he was pretty talented with or without jacky wu... so there's a pretty big chance of him winin it :excited: but then agen the audience are different they wont vote for only singing abilites

Honestly I don't think so.
Been watching Am-Idol and local star search for a while, I think the formula is somewhat similar :
1. Good Voice
2. Good voice is not enough. Performance skills (yeah dance or not dance etc) Personality (confidence, humility, ability to take criticism etc) , connection to the audience, ability to put the "right emotion" to the songs, the right song pick (that "flatter" your sound range), improvisation skills (to set yourself differently), ... it could be useful if you have an interesting family - see JPL, John Stevens, Jasmine (of Idol 3).

Could imagine the jury's comments : pitchy voice, lack of confidence, diction ... blah blah.

I don't think so either. Jay is a good singer, but not great. What makes Jay so unique and special is his style, rhythm and ability to improv. I've watched several Jay performances and what amazes me the most is the way he can make a song on his album sound like a completely different song in a different melody and rhythm. As for Jay's voice, I think it's unique but not that powerful and smooth. I think David Tao would be a better candidate to win Amerian Idol.

Most likely that Jay won't win cause in American Idol or whatever idol some countries in the world are now having, its tough because supposedly they are looking for a "POWERHOUSE" type of voice. ER??????? Meaning "ma'am/sir, can u 99.9% burst your lung with this song without actually passing out in the process?"

And I disagree that Jay isn't a good singer. If you listen closely and see how Jay can control his voice and flips it back and forth easily to high or low tone, its very hard to do so and he can definetly hit the high notes as well. I just prefer to think of him singing with the Usher style, but with an asian and of course, Jay tang ^^

I doubt he would win any Idol competition. I don't think his personality fits well with the whole "competition"

05-21-2004, 08:07 PM
Nah. He's too quiet to be in a competition. To be able to win a competition you must know how to 'sell' yourself well. He's mumbling will be the first thing judges like Simon will criticize.

I'm just wondering.. most ppl here said that Jay will most likely not win the competition but when do you think he will be out of the competition? Straight after the audition or after the final 10 etc?

Ermm.. I think he will not pass the audition...

heh, sadly i dont think he'd win.
But if it was a song writing comp, he will SO kick butt~~

hmm...i think jay's voice wouldn't be strong enough to impress the judges..
like the judges probably thinks its jus not enough..voice wise..
but i reckon he would make it through the 1st couple of auditions..[he can impress them by doin his raps..]...like till about the groups before the final 10..
but then usually in all the idol stuff..they gotta start doin group thingoes..n i dont think jay would really like that..coz then his cant be the boss of everything he wants to do..n its not likely that the other people in the group would wanna listen to everything he says..
n..jay doesnt really know much dancing skills...but if he got into the later rounds..it'll probably be coz everyone's amazed about how he plays the piano and sings along at the same time..full of emotion n everything...and of course how he can also rap as well..
but yea..he probably wouldnt be too overally confident tho..

Well I think Jay wouldn't fit into American Idol because he is more towards the Chinese style... Don't think Simon would be too impressed with him. And the judges would continually be complaining of his mumbling and lack or clarity. He has as much chance as William Hung.

Jay would win if it was a contest for being multi-talented~cos he is
but as u all hav mentioned..his voice is not strong enuff for those kinda contests~
but he's OUR idol no matter wat :)

i think simon won't be impressed wid him too....hes a picky guy...and jay's voice isn't those...really loud...and crystal clear kinds....so i don't think the judges will be very impressed wid him...plus his words...like how he sings...not very understandable sometimes...so...i don't think he would win if he was in American Idol..

i dont think jay would win american idol...since the way american idol chooses people is highly suspect...american idol cant choose anybody that will ever be famous even if they were standin rite in front of them...it jus churns out a bunch of mediocre singers, with no "te she"..cant compose their own songs and lacking in personality...look at all da singers that have come out of american idol...none of them are gettin anywhere...american idol cant produce anybody, that will actually be like superstar singer to any extent...

06-05-2004, 08:34 AM
no he can never win in the america idol. look at all the contestants at the american idol he are able to express themselves really well on stage like body movement, facial expression. jay is just a shy and quiet guy who is a great songer writer and turn each song lyrics into his very own. he is good and his rythem and vocal expression. as in the american idol, they look for somebody who can perform on stage with strong vocal power. jay may be successful in the chinese music industry but no way into the western. however, he is still the best singer i have ever heard from. he cannot be an american idol but definetly everybodys' chinese idol

invis
06-06-2004, 09:03 AM
i don't think so... they would say he's too shy and not confident enough! but, if he sings the songs he composed, he'll surely win over the hearts of the audience! and his clothes... so long as he don't wear those fashion-disaster clothes, i guess he has a pretty high chance... hehe~

sweep
06-06-2004, 11:59 AM
I also do not think that he will win because he mumbles lyrics. His singing also is not that great -- which he admits. I also have to agree with the clothing. Since he's famous now, he has cool clothes. But I'm afraid that in this situation where he is not famous, he will wear ugly ones. Another disadvantage is that he is shy.

He may not win the American Idol but im sure that he will stand a chence in the Singapore Idol...Although he may be shy but his talents will still be recognised!!
He can compose and sing the song on stage...many ppl will still be mesmerised...thats what i believe...hahaha...
Go Jay!!

i think jay will win because many will think that he's cute and diao....he has a unique style of singing that everyone will love....although the judges might say he mumbles the way through...but thats wat makes him jay...

:) true true! the aus idol is alright i guess, i guess at least aus idol has a bit of talent, not just a pretty face, ur know.

but i don't think jay will able to win in the american one~~~~ but he might if there is heaps of asian voting :bleh:

06-27-2004, 07:24 PM
Um... not a hard question... i reckon jay wouldn't win. Like, if you compare Jay to whats-her-name Kelly Clarkson, she has such a strong voice! And if anybody knows Will Young from Pop Idol in UK, the original idol, he has a really distinguished voice too, so i reckon Jay our idol would lose... Asian-wise maybe he'd stand a chance with his different sing abilities, but if he wasn't the Jay that we know, would we know him to support him? Ooh... a turn back the time question...!!

haha, of course, I don't have any doubt on that. BUt I am kind of worried about his english, if he knes more englishes, he would win for sure, But i am not sure right now. I don't think that hat is a big problem, is just his style, of course. People sure can accept his style if they really like him. I am not sure if the englishes can accept his music.......

because he can't hide the talent that was meant for him and he's destined for

Oh,I guess our heavenly king won't make in the American Idol. :hmm:
But having Jay on Idol wouldn't be much of a surprise
since already three American Idol finalists so far have Asian roots.
They are Season 3's Jasmine Trias,Camile Velasco
and this season's Melinda Lira, all of them being 100% Filipinos
living abroad. They make me proud of being a Filipino
and makes me wonder if other Asians can also make it
big in the US of A. :hmm:

Anyway,Jay on American Idol? :hmm:
That would be exciting! :excited:
He will surely win if the Asian vote would be recognised. :wink2:
Simon would probably tell him harsh criticisms about
his choice of song and um,his outfits, maybe.
But I think Paula Abdul will love Jay the way we love him
and Randy would probably surprised by Jay's roster of talents.
Aside from singing,he can play the piano, cello, guitar, drums, flute
and can do several things enough to please the judges
and more importantly,the American audience.
Suffice it to say that he deserves a bigger title - World Idol perhaps.
But I think Asian Idol is more appropriate.

First, I don't think Jay will joy that show. Why? I haven't a good reason yet but I think it's up to his character. He's not a guy who want to shows his self to all people.

Anyway, if he joy that, I think Jay wouldn't win. lol. Haha...I don't think every people like the guy like Jay. Just think of my aunt, she said she don't like Jay. So...not everyone like Jay. And in my point of view, the character of Jay isn't a type of normal people. Hehe...not offence* But if most of people are like me, I think Jay would win definitely. :brows:

I don't think he'd win cos for one thing, alot of people don't think he's handsome enough and also his mumbling. Most people who watch idol probably wouldn't even have a clue about music, they just judge what they see on the day....and we all know our Jay is talented in the fact that his songs are written in a deep manner and often very poetic, you need to listen to a few to judge.

I know one thing for sure, my parents wouldn't pick him nor does any other adult i know.

03-31-2005, 01:58 PM
haha i dun think he'll win. yap 1stly he's not handsome, yap n he mumbles. moreover i dun think he sings very very well - compare him n the american singers - dun think he's better than them in terms of singing.
however if it's some song writing competition, maybe he'll win cos he's talented! ya haha
hope no one beats me up for saying his singing is not very very good! :brows:

LOL I can imagine the dialogue in the audition.

*Beginning

Simon (thinking): Great, another William Hung -____-

Paula: So what's your name?

Jay mumbles in English: Ja..Jay Chou

Randy: Alright, show us what you got?

Jay: Okay. *starts singing in Engrish*

Simon: STOP STOP STOP. That was just terrible. Please learn to speak English and then come back.

lol it'll be something like that, doubtful that Simon will be that nice though XD

>.< poor jay

I think Cowell will bash his looks and his voice.

But I think his Music > Voice

i dont think he would win an "Idol" position, because i think a big part of american idol is based on personality. not saying that Jay doesn't have any personality but i don't think its the type to appeal and attract a countryful of audience. Besides i think part of why Jay is so talented is because he makes up his own songs and he plays the piano and cello extraordinarily well. I dont think Jay would have a chance to show off that talent on something like american idol.

snow_drops
01-21-2006, 06:50 AM
Um...no, because Jay isn't your typical prettyboy male idol, and a big part of American Idol is based on your looks. And he also needs to work on his English. But I'm sure he'll still charm many of us with his amazing composing skills and romantic piano playing

01-21-2006, 07:06 AM
i dun think he will win, because those idols contests requires you to have a very strong voice

He is good composer, and a good singer in another way, a way that will not impress the judges alot..

01-21-2006, 07:15 AM
yeah sure many like jay a lot but i dont think he'l win because he might not join such a thing and i dont think american idol is his kind of thing the judges comments are kind of sacarstic at times

interesting.. i felt like a dejavu.. (not exactly though) but yea my sis asked the same thing when i watched american idol.. hahaha.. and my answer is probably not.. i mean.. first they won't like chinese.. and jay mumbles when he sings.. hence u know the result.. it won't be if it is a singing competition because he has to sing other people song.. (consider the fact that jay can;t speak english) anyway.. i think when he sings his own song that's what makes him really diao.. not other people songs because somehow someway it lacks something.. hehehe..

01-22-2006, 06:55 PM
He's not just an idol. He's an artist. Not only can he sing, he can also write his own songs.

American Idol is one dimensional. It's a singing contest so they mainly focus on the voice. Jay has a unique package of his own. Would he win if he competed? Prolly not, but one thing's for sure, he's got my vote. :)

but not at american idol.

but someways, i think he will win in composing than singing .

02-01-2006, 03:21 AM
I believe he stands no chance to win the American Idol. It's a totally different environment over there. Of course, if he sings in english, he'll have a better chance of winnning.

I would rather say he'll definitely win competitions over here in the east like Malaysian Idol or the China's version of American Idol.

lotusSan
03-09-2006, 08:27 PM
I personally don't think he'll win and there's a good probability that he won't even make it to Hollywood. However, Jay doesn't need any kind of singing competition to get him to where he is today. In fact, singing competitions would do him no good because it would prevent him from making his own music. Jay isn't just about having a good singing voice. He is a talented musician, who has his own unique musical style.

i dont think he will win American Idol! It must be English song! but Jay cant sing well using English(no offence).
But, if he join those competitions that require to sing in chinese, he definitely will win!

rozmary
06-06-2007, 07:57 AM
i dont think he will, he doesn't speak english, right? it would be really hard. if only he speaks real good english, the world would have known him and perhaps he would win those type of contest. if china would have then maybe he'd get the chance but nowhere else would he make it.

02-21-2008, 04:34 AM
Yeah, I agree with a lot of people here.

Jay is too quietly talented to be your typical 'idol'.

And remember when he first came out and people were like, 'You're not good looking enough'?

The judges would probably say he mumbles when he sings and he's not charismatic enough or to quote Mark Holden 'I just didn't feel it.'

LOL.

Akira
02-21-2008, 09:20 AM
Yes I agree with sha
I find the american idol process quite harsh at times but that is the reality of the music industry.
I was thinking how about Wang Lee hom, his command of english is pretty good isn't it? Do you think he could win.
He could go like undercover! :D and try to audition.
Do you think the judges would have heard of him?

hobielover
02-21-2008, 02:53 PM
I think that Jay would pull a Daughtry. He might not win, or even come in second or third, but still make a huge impact. Chris Daughtry came in 4th a couple years ago, but his songs are constantly on the radio and "Home" is a Grammy nominee this year. Jay might not have the best vocals, but he has talent.

I think it's quite possible that Simon would have heard of either LeeHom or Jay, since he knows a lot about different singers and he put "Il Divo" together. That's an Operatic Pop group, with singers from several different countries. I'm sure Simon wouldn't like "Niu Zai Hen Mang," though, since he hates country.

There was a shy singer last year who came in 3rd, and Simon really thought that she should have won, so I don't think Jay's shyness would be much of a problem, as long as he didn't let it mess up his singing.

But with jay's talent, joining American Idol might shadowed his talents. American Idol cant be show casing someone playing piano on stage etc...

But I think he can probably win

02-21-2008, 03:14 PM
LOL! That would be funny if he always wanted to wear a hat on stage to hide his face. He still wears hats when he goes to concerts and in his MVs. Maybe the judges would like his mumbling. He would be so funny on such a show. Maybe people would vote for him because he's so goofy and cute.

I can't really imagine Jay in an Idol-like show. Jay's strongest point is his musical genius in writing lyrics and trying new things.

I'm not sure...for "idol" type of things, you generally have to be very outgoing and rambunctious. Jay is pretty quiet, isn't he? although he could definitely bust a rap and surprise everyone XD

Those who win American Idol so far,
is always very powerful and loud in term of voice.

Jay is more soft spoken and soothing to enjoy.
But the voting system means anything can happen..
How many will vote for Jay.. that makes the difference..
I'll vote for him.. and I think everyone here will too..
Yeah.. he might win..! :D
