View Full Version : Apocalyptica [cellists unite...]
...while i doubt many of you have heard of them...
wait...maybe you have...i'm not sure...=]
anyways...they're a sort of finnish/swedish band (which amounts to the same thing)...
not really a band...just...a trio of cellists...amazing cellists.
they convert many metal and dark rock songs into classical cello pieces...and also compose some songs of their own, of course. a very big inspiration for my art...heard of them?
visit their website at www.apocalyptica.com if you want to find out about them =)

well, i have heard of them. it's quite odd, since it seem like hardly anyone knows them, but most of my friends enjoy their music. it's really... um... unique?
they're best known for their metallica covers, i think, but there are also a couple of collaborations with other artists, like "path 2" with sandra nasic (really good) and "seemann" with nina hagen. (both happen to be german female singers with really deep voices.)
er, btw, i always thought they're all finnish. :glug:
one of them is swedish, and since finland was under swedish rule, i'd say they could be either :bleh:. but yea, they're a finnish group.
they do a lot of metallica recomps...very nice. :)
i think it's weird so little people have heard of them too.

yup, Jo´s right.. we have a lot of swedish ppl here in Finland, and although they´re born in here and speak finnish, techically they´re still considered swedish :bleh:
apocalyptica is great, i´ve seen them performing live and it´s so amazing how versatile their music is.
i like the song "Faraway", it has a swedish (this time a real swedish :) ) singer called Linda in it. (she´s a vocalist in another band, can´t remeber it´s name though  )

this celloist/rock band is a brilliant lot of horribly talented lads..right when i heard one of their famous singles, the path (sable enforcer), that's when the hook got me stuck on their music..i began experimenting with theirs songs, or should i say magnum opuses, and i won't deny they are for certain from a different perspective of intrumentalists, as compared to the corrs, bond, and the 12 girls band. unlike the listed group artists, they are a bunch that play the cello, and not the common violin, flute and other instruments that are known to many people. knowing that jay is a cello player, perhaps he might as well try to squeeze in the band? lol, it was merely a pretend.. it's pretty quite paradoxical if we imagine jay were to lessen on the vocals and bring emphasis to his instrumental side.. wouldn't it be say intriguing? come to think of it, i like him the way he is now. he should prolong his singing career.

kasic..they're basically a trio[or was it a quartet?] of cellist. They're a cello band/group that play something like cello-rock.
visit www.apocalyptica.com and you can read their bios and listen to sample tracks of they're pieces!
I've only heard some of they're pieces, but I'd certaintly say they're music is very..."diao".
i can upload some of they're stuff [that i have] if you want.
anyway, you should really try them out!

aahhh i must revive this thread. my friend, who's an amazing cello player, told me about apocalyptica a couple months ago, but i never got to listen to them until my cousin burned me their CD and they're AWESOME. it's actually hard to tell at times whether they're really playing on the cello or not cuz it sounds like a guitar. i think they're amazing to turn rock music into a cello quartet thing. it's very unique, and i really recommend everybody to listen to them.

junnleenfaah..yes they're very unique!! I think Apocalyptica make probably the most original, coolest music I've ever listened to. And if you gave their songs to some random to listen to, I'm pretty sure they'd think its some instrumental rock track, featuring guitars[not the slow songs tho]. Its a bit scary how fast they can hack at their cellos. But its all so exciting to listen to.
I've managed buy albums Apocalyptica, Reflections and Cult to listen too. Needa get hold of the earlier two albums eventually. I've spread their music to my cello teacher, and he spreaded it to all his other students and music colleagues!! and from what I heard, everyone likes it alot.
The only baddish thing about them, is that some of their pieces sound similar to others, and they usually follow the same format/structure in each album.
Anyway, anyone interested in listening to instrumentals or wanting to hear something extraordinary and new should try them!!

ekyec, that's awesome how you got their music to spread! i do hafta agree with you that a lot of it sounds very similar. but in general, if you listen to a couple songs, it's completely amazing. especially the parts where they go really high on their cello and it's practically identical to an electric guitar.. ahh, it's soooo cool. i wonder how they figured out how to play the music on their cellos?

I don't really know how they figured to play that way. Probably entirely the result of random experimenting with the cello.
All the players have been formally educated in music and cello for a long long time..I believe. And they liked listening to that hard metal rock music, so I figure they just tried to play this on the cello using whatever technique they could think of............ and it worked!
But I've seen part of a clip of an actual performance of theirs and its rather freakish. Like how crazy guitarist smashing their guitars.....they look like they abuse the cello just as much. poor cellos...the strings probably very much pained.
and like you said, listening to a couple of pieces at a time is just a thrilling ride for the ear!
But once I tried listening to the heaviver, fast, frantic songs, track after track, and it can actually get exhausting on the brain....but then their slow songs can calm so well.
I'd really want to see them perform in real life one day! it would be so exciting. Too bad they mostly only tour europe[sometimes america]....and I live in australia, where very few people know them.

aww that sucks that not many people in australia know them. well maybe if the word continues to spread about them and more people like them then they might come (=
i saw their website, and it's so funny cuz they actually do look like heavy metal rockers but then you see that they play CELLO to heavy metal.. haha, i think that's so awesome. i wonder how much bow hair they lose from playing it so hard? one of my old orchestra conductors told me that the more bow hair you lose as you play means you play with more intensity. that'd be so crazy if they had to change their bow hair at least once a week or something, lol
