I guess I am one day late in posting this. I just saw the Channel News Asia's re-airing of the unveiling of the Fabric of the Nation project..... I guess in a way, I was very touched by the project.

Last year, it was a tough year to bear. During the SARS period..... we all felt so helpless and fearful.....

Helpless, because I saw what was happening all around us, and feel like I really want to do something, instead of waiting around everyday, waiting to hear about more nurses and doctors being knocked down by the diease in the news, saddened by news that people had lost the battle with SARS.

Fearful because we are so afraid of people around us. We cringe back in fear whenever we see someone sneeze beside us, wondering if the person was a carrier.....

But when the Fabric of a Nation project was initiated, it gave us all an aim in our lives, allowed us to do something, anything to show how much we love this little country of ours, and in an indirect way, gave us a physically way to thank all those who contributed so much during those tough times.....

I wanted to contribute a patch for this project, but due to my oversight, the patch never left my possession. I guess this would be one big regret in my life. As now, I looked with awe at the 62 huge works of patchwork, I felt this emptiness in my heart, that my patch never ended up in those 62. But also, I felt a surge of pride in our hearts.

We may have our little faults, people can say Singaporeans are cold and un-feeling to things around us, but when We look at the Fabric of a Nation, we can say proudly, that when push comes to shove, we can show that we care, and want to contribute our little part to our nation. This patchwork will go down in our history as a proud symbol of unity and nation teamwork.

I am proud to be a Singaporean.

PS: For those who are interested, the Fabric of a Nation is up for display in the HDB Main office next to the Toa Payoh MRT, opened from 9am to 6pm. Do try to make a trip there!

Yeah I was pretty moved by the Fabric of the Nation project too. I was channel surfing the other day and I happened to watch the program on Channel News Asia too. To be honest, I almost cried at one part.
I admit, usually I'm a damn cynical person when it comes to this sort of national projects and all.. but now that I think about it 2003 really was a tough year for a lot of Singaporeans. Many were shaken out of our comfort zone and complacency. The SARS period was terrible. Nobody believed school would stop, but it did! All us students could not believe it. It was like out of a dream! It made me realise we take so many things in life for granted.

I would have contributed something too. But I'm not creative and well, I can't sew for nuts!

damn.. i typed quite a long reply and my post got lost...

well anyway.. I thought it was really meaningful... and I was really impressed by the number of patches sent in.. and also all the elderly folks who did their part..

I had actually also considered sewing and then sending in my own patch.. But I guess I never got around to doing it..

Well, 2003 sure is a bad year for all of us. SARS, bad economy and war everywhere so everyone wants to do their part to help. I want to help too, but just like dazzlette, I not creative enough, don't no what to sew and not good in it.

Dear everyone, the warm blanket is still there. Its very comforting to know that there are so many people doing sweet things for our country.

I think that the fabric of the nation, in a subtle way, brought the people together. It is not some mega show of charity or what, but it does prove that Singaporeans, when you guys are united, great things could be done:)
