I think most of you would agree with me that Jay has been one of the most popular/succesful Chinese musicians in the last 5 years. But do you think he would've been as popular/successful if he was a musician in the 80s? What do you think his musical style would've been like? Do you think he would've conformed to the tacky fashion that is often associated with the era?

Hmm, of cuz we dont expect a sudden RnB music from him in that era? Cuz the influence of music styles he got from anywhere arent that. The 80's have their range of talented composers too. So maybe Jay would just be like one of them, but maybe more outstanding? If that is he can develop his pieces like how he is doing now.
I wonder if anyone gets what im talking about. Im not really good expressing in words. :glug:

hmm...i don't know...music in the 80s...and in the 20th century now....are totally two different styles...it's like that anything..u can tell the difference between music 20 years ago to now. the older ones are more tranditional i think..but right now it's a new generation and ppl like to heare new/fresh things. and what jay is making right now does not suit the taste of people in the 80s. jay MIGHT be sucessful in the 80s...if he follow the trend of according to what people would like to hear. if he introduce r&b/hip hop like how he did now..i dunno...wouldn't it be too soon? i think people will throw rotten eggs at him...OR people might accept his music. but since there are artists who are famous already in the 80s....it's hard to compete with them too. it's two different music styles that u can't compare. but as of right now...WE'LL throw rotten eggs at anyone who makes music like in the 80s!!!!

Hmm.... in that time... R&B wasn't there yet... But, Jay's composing skill would be good^^ coz the songs last time is not crete beautifully like what Jay did now^^ there's seldom good composer like Jay in the 80s. So, if he's there, he would be another Elvish that time keke :P

itz true dat bk then in the 80's the music style is really different from now...but since Jay has been able to popularize R&B in Asia he probably would haf brought in a new trend of music bk then too!

I think he'd be starving by now cuz I don't think his music would have been very well received in the 80s...so good thing he was only a kid then...

Ya...i agree that his style is affected by the RnB trend....
If he is in the 80s,he may produced a different style of muisic...but i can assure everyine that no matter when he s goin to compose...it will be good music only....

oh my god, i swear to god this is the most HYSTERICAL topic i've read on the forums so far.
if jay we're a funky groovy 80's guy, i can already imagine him like james brown going "i feel good..so good..so good..i gotah you!" or in an elvis presley costume.. that's delirious and outrageous, at the same time!! HAHAHA!

Jay in the 80s? :hmm: Life would be tougher. I think it's really hard for singers to become AND remain popular back in the 80s and also early 90s. That was why singers like Leslie Cheung, Alan Tam, Roman Tam, Anita Mui, Danny Chan, etc. made such a big impact those days. And later, Jacky Cheung, Andy Lau, Leon Lai, and Aaron Kwok.
Anyhow, I think maybe Jay would be like Elvis, kinda.

sometimes Jay's fashion reminds me of the 80's
The 80's was the decade for eclectic music. The main instrument is the keyboards, and musicians were fascinated by how they can generate various sounds electronically.
He might've probably created a new genre of music if he was in the 80's. He's innovative, so he could withstand the musical demands then.
But he's born in the right time. hehe. Just imagine him being the idols of our older cousins, instead of us. hehe.

God has his reasons making Jay famous at the right era. hehe.

hmm...interesting question i'd say...ok. If he was a singer back in the 80's and kept his style as it is NOW, i don't think he would've been very successful. But if he CHANGED his style, it would probably be more like whatever was hot back then. I'm not very sure about old music. But he would still have his own very special style~~

Uh-on... 1980s? I do not know Chinese music back then but American music... in terms of Madonna... I could just think of the clothes... :bleh: Hmmm... I dunno what Jay's influence for making music might have been... Imagine, Jay wearing those crazy outfits... I definitely would not be RnB or hip hop... Ballads or slow songs?? All I know, that it would be definitely be different from the kind of music he makes now...
HHM.... good question...
i think the 80's and 90's pop music had much less words/notes and long notes. Jay's R&B style prolly wouldn't have been accepted as well as now. I mean, if you think about how FAST some of the lyrics in jay's songs and all the rap.... wouldn't really fit with the "simple" era... :?
