Read this in Singapore's You Weekly (You Zhou Kan). If it's already been posted, just delete this, but I didn't see it anywhere. I'm just going to translate it as best as I could 'cause I can't input traditional Chinese characters.
Top Ten Selling Albums of 2003.
1. Yeh Hui Mei - Zhou Jielun; 330 000 copies sold
2. 72 Changes - Jolin Tsai; 310 000 copies sold
3. SuperStar - SHE; 240 000 copies
4. Le Zhi Lu - David Tao; 230 000 copies
5. Together - SHE; 220 000 copies
6. Yu Jian - Stephanie Sun; 200 000 copies
7. Yi Guang Nian - 5566; 200 000 copies
8. Wu Jie Ke Ji (I think?) - Energy; 180 000 copies
9. Lian Ai De Li Liang - Liang Jing Ru; 150 000 copies
10. Shi Guang Ji - Mayday; 140 000 copies
Jay Chou, Jolin Tsai Emerged Top
To sum up Taiwan's music industry of 2003, local papers have described it as "unsound". According to estimates done by record companies, the total sales of albums have decreased by 10% from the year 2002, owing to the proliferation of privacy and the ease at which songs can be downloaded online, thus adding to the already-gloomy prospects of the recording industry.
However, despite the gloom, Jay Chou, with the title of the Asian king of pop ("ya zhou tian wang") behind him, still managed to easily sell many copies of his album "Yeh Hui Mei". In addition, it even managed to break the 300 000 copies barrier; evidently, this album, lovingly named after his mother, managed to capture the heart of the market (at least, I think that's what it means) and emerged as champion amidst all Taiwanese records released last year, allowing his mother to become famous almost overnight.
Besides Jay Chou, Jolin Tsai, too, sold many copies of her album, "72 Changes" and came in second after Chou with 310 000 copies sold, making her the only female singer on the list to sell more than 300 000 copies.

Okay, the rest of the article is about the other singers and things like that on the chart, no further mention of him.
And personally, I think Jolin managed to sell so many copies of album only because Jielun worked on it. I mean, I was actually tempted to buy it just to hear his rapping on "Shuo Ai Ni", for example, and I'm sure some Jay fans bought it for that very same reason. So. Yeah.

Thanks for the news hisashiluv14. :flowers:
Not to be Jolin biased...(oh well, I am Jolin biased) but I agree about you on this one. Maybe Jolin's album sold a lot because it practivcally has Jie Lun's name all over it. Let's have to wait for her album that doesn't have anything Jie Lun in it and see if it sells well. The songs Jie Lun composed for her were all catchy. So it was a selling point. Anyway, wasn't it "Bu Le Guang Chang" that Jay rapped in? :?
I'm glad, my favorite artists sold their albums well too. But with this fast growing technical world, it is indeed harder to sell music. But there are still lovers of music like me, who buy their albums even if I've downloaded it. Buying the album does help make the industyr alive. That is a big known fact. :wink2:

wow i'm not surprised that jay came to 1st, because i knew he was going to be no 1.
I didn't buy jolins album cos jay composed some of the songs for her, i never knew then until i bought the album.

thanks for the news. :D i agree with everyone, jay put a lot of effort *cougcough* to make these songs for her, and her album sells well. she's lucky to have a friend like jay. i hope she's not trying to hunt for jay to make her album sell well. personally...i really didn't knew jay was going to be at the top of the list...and i didn't know how jolin's album was selling except that it was selling well, but i didn't know how well.
but i'm glad with the results, YHM is a success.

Mmmm.... i think that jolin doesn't merits the second place of the chart!
She can reach there only because of jay's work. I think she is not really talent. Poor jay! he is like used by jolin to be more famous. Also... she is ugly! with her burger lips!

Thanks for the news..
We all knew that YHM would be a success, as was all his other albums, but its always nice to have proof and im sure Jay will be happy with the results. Its disappointing to know everyone could have sold a lot more but 300,000 is an amazing barrier to break, especially when the industry is suffering as it is..and he beat Jolin... :bleh: If YHM doing well wasnt enough, Jolins album which contained pieces of Jays work also did well and deserves the same credit...just goes to show how amazing Jay is as both albums did soo well... :excited:

Not surprising that Jay is number 1 :) It's nice to see that both of SHE's album sold well. And last but not least, Go Jolin

That's great news! Go Jay!
Though i find it strange that the article specifically mentioned that Jolin is the only female to sell more than 300,00 albums....she's the only other person to do that. It's like saying Jay is the only male singer to break the 300,00 barrier....
And I also agree that the reason why Jolin's album sold well was coz of Jay's contributions! I'm sure lotsa Jay fans bought her album for HIS compositions and rapping....
Plus I think her album came out during a lull in the emergence of new albums, so she had a lot less competition!!!

Yeah he did rapping in that song, though I've only listened to it once after downloading it (really dislike her vocals man!). But he did a bit of background rapping in "Shuo Ai Ni", if I'm not mistaken. :)
And maybe I'm overreacting, but I saw the advert for A-Do's new album today on TV. And it certainly did seem like they're trying to use Jielun's name to sell the album as they specifically mentioned that he wrote the song "Tui Rang" (is it?). It's so... haha I don't know. Quite funny to me.
But anyway, yeah go Jielun! :D

Jay did great considering he released his album in July 31st ...basicly August and had only a few months to sell...and it sold 330 000 copies !!!

it no special that jay got first position..
cause Jay fourth album is really good and i bet jay next album would break that record
and finally GO JOLIN ..nice job
yes cooliemen, that's true too. jolin's album and one of SHE's albums came out at the beginning of the year right? so in a much smaller amount of time, he managed to sell the most albums, congrats to jay!
although i'm not a jolin fan and i agree that jolin's album sales were helped along by jay's contribution, i'm sure that regardless of how much jay put in, if she didn't have her own strong fanbase she couldn't have sold so many copies (more than david tao and yanzi!).
however, were these numbers only for within taiwan? 300 000 doesn't seem that much when thinking that jay has so many fans worldwide, but i'm mostly thinking about the major american artists who sell millions.

yay go jay!! :excited:
i'm not very surprised with this news though...
i've managed persuade a lot of my friend who doesn't know about jay at all to buy it...
but i'm kinda disapointed...
i thought jay could sell millions of copies...
but never mind...GO Jay!!!
and thanks for the news!!! :thanks:

Yes it's only within Taiwan. Worldwide, I think that his album sales will approach a million. (Just my hypothesis, not a fact!)

I saw it too! They wrote "chao ji tian wang + qing ge tian wang = [poster's note: i cant remember]" Yups! i was like, erm so are they selling the album or selling Jay's song? Haha, what a way to advert the album, faints. and i notice that to whoever who sings mostly love-based songs in their albums would be called "qin ge wang zi" [prince of love songs]..

01-22-2004, 09:52 PM
eh? i thought that besides "bu la ge guang chang", the only background rapping by jay that took place was in "qi shi jing shen"... didn't know there was any rapping in "shuo ai ni".
and looks like jolin's album will probably sell pretty well since jay'll be writing songs for her again. anyway, it's no surprise that jay is no. 1 on the list. didn't expect anyone else to claim that throne. :wink2:
wow, they're using jay's name to advertise a-do's album? oi... i think they should give a-do more credit. his album will do fine. he's got a very unique voice.

Yup, there was a background rapping done by Jay in Shuo Ai Ni too, but some parts doesnt sound like him, maybe there's another rapper. But he was in it alright.

Doesn't that about sum pretty much every singer up...? The media is so hilarious.
Yeah A-Do's got a unique voice but it doesn't really go down well with me. He's all right. But still, Jielun is still a bigger selling point than anyone in the industry, since he's so hot and popular. But of course. He's the best! :yeah:
