scarletwillow
01-14-2004, 09:46 PM
The generator changes your name phonetically, not by the actual word.

Like I mentioned,
my name = Jialiu
generated Japanese name = Jiariu
real Japanese name = Karyuu

The program gave my name as
Dawn ~ Debunu
sounds kinda weird. My japanese name, if you take the japanese meaning of dawn(morning) is Kyooko..... There, that sounds more like me...... I sure feel more like a Kyooko than a Debunu!

If I take the Katagana translation of Dawn, I get DON.... which is what many people thought that's how my name was spelt..... Can they tell Don is for males and I am not a male???? :-x

Haha, the algorithm the script uses can't translate Dawn correctly because apparently it doesn't interpret the "w" sound correctly.
I imagine that:
The Da in your name corresponds to the De.
The aw in your name corresponds to the ebu.
The wn in your name corresponds to the nu.
And yah, a better phonetic translation would be Don :D

aw, poop. i'm still serena. oh well.. i guess my name is just that universal! :bleh: uh, hrm, sure. lol. i wonder what my real japanese name would be.. and what it means!!
Hee hee... so happens, your name can be broken down into Japanese phonetics exactly, so that's why it is the same....

It becomes:
Serena --> Se-Re-Na.....

This program is sort of like the kind the Japanese use to change english into katagana, the japanese characters they use to represent foreign words, since they do not use alphabets in their language....

Also, Japanese phonetics do not have the sounds for 'L', so usually, they replace the L sounding words with 'R' sounds.... So, 'Lin' becomes 'Ri-n', those that ends with T, they would end it with 'To', so 'Toliet' becomes "To-Ri-E-To".

I thought that was one of the most confusing things I have to learn when I was doing Japanese....

Marvdogg
12-08-2004, 12:49 AM
ok real name:

Marvin

Japanese name:

Marubinu

what the heck .. that doesnt even sound japanese

naughtygal
12-08-2004, 08:07 AM
It does sound Japanese. That's in Katakana. Japanese doesn't have the "v" sound, so all "v's" sound like "b's." And anything foreign that ends with "r" becomes "ru" in Japanese.

And if you put in your Chinese characters, you're not really getting a "Japanese name." All you're getting is how your three (or two or four) characters are pronounced in Japanese.

Anyhow, I don't need the program to translate my name. I'm half-Japanese, and the Japanese nickname that my parents gave me is Sachi, which means happiness or good fortune.

aznsweet_sakura
12-12-2004, 05:00 AM

12-12-2004, 07:22 AM
::laughs:: so someone finally pointed out the mystery behind translating a foreign name into Japanese? way to go Sachi! v(^_^) Oh, something to point out, in case some people don't know; when words end in "u" in japanese, it usually isn't pronounced (or barely heard), if I understand correctly (correct me if I'm wrong)..
