It's alright to not be able to understand Jay's singing, but to not comprehend the lyrics will be a real pity.

You may not understand Jay when he sings his songs, but if you do not take a peek at some of his lyrics, it'd be a pity. For example, San Nian Er Ban from his album Ye Hui Mei, is resonant with a school boy's thoughts and desires.

The song speaks of how a less academically-inclined boy buries himself in ping pong so as to impress the girls, as well as to steer away from the painful fact that his grades are poor. However, his world of ping pong is also riddled with adult-like pressures, which he must bear as burdens.

Resembling the bounce and rapid speed of the ping pong ball, the song flits from scene to scene. It starts with the boy's glory in the game arena, proceeds back to the boy being disheartened by his mediocre grades, before emphasising his shining status in the game of ping pong again. This interspersing of different feels altogether seemingly reflects how some boys who have a strong and rebellious facade are actually confused and troubled deep down.

The inner most desire of the boy is only revealed in the last paragraph. He only yearns for the simple; a place which is fragrant with flowers, and where the birds are free to fly. He wishes to discontinue with his present life. With a boyish determination, he does not hanker after the shallow title of Champion, but wants to judge his own destiny.

My first take on a translation. Hope I didn't spoil the article for you guys. Feel free to comment on my effort.

Generally, the reviewer just about sums up how I interprete the song too. It's about the angst of this student and how he feels deep inside, despite his superb skills in ping pong. Definitely one of my favourites! And one of the reasons I love lyrics written by Vincent Fang is that they hide deep meanings yonder. :wink2:

hey sky lark, thanx for translating and sharing it with us, well.....i think your translation is good. personally, i really love this song, the lyricks has deep meanings.....and its one of those songs like 'ba wo hui lai le' that speaks of the reality, some of the unahappy and pressured situation or lifestyle that lots of young ppl are facing these days. and no doubt the composition of the song is special, jay really has a way to write songs like this , with the lyricks, its sure a great song. and also......somehow, i personally feel that this song also tells us that, craving for victory something is very painful.....but infact if we made efforts to strive for a certain competition.....and when we are near that split moment of victory, we can feel that ......victory is not all that important, in fact whats important is the effort we made, and the experience we gain in the course that matters most.......just like in jay's mv for san nian er ban, when in the end jay actually has a good opputurnity to defeat his opponent.....but instead he let go......bcoz he realise that victory is not what he wanted the most......what he wants is to show ppl that he has the ability and talent in this sport.....and as long as the audience see it, thats most important, proving to ppl , is what he strive the hardest to show. its really.....a very touching song but the speciality lies in, that it is a touching song but not expressed in the slow ballad way, instead in a fast beat song......this composition of jay sure has a degree of depth.
