mh, i admit that this topic's not really original, but i really can't stand seeing our beloved european forum drying up like this. :?
so, what kind of european food do you like? i think the most popular cuisine is probably the italian one with pasta, pizza, and stuff like that. but maybe some of you can tell us about some not so well-known delights of your home country?
personally speaking, i like them all (or most of them that is), as long as they're not made of too much meat. :hungry:

I love Italian food! Those varieties of pizzas and pastas.... :bleh:
I'd like to try that Scottish delicacy whose main ingredient is sheep's gut. What's the name of this food anyhow? :?
caviar of course! top of my list! :D
erg...i fall for italian food any day.
fettuccini and ravioli are my favorites. they are in actuality the only european food i dabble in...otherwise...i like Japanese/Chinese/Korean food more.

Hhmm...english delicacies.. :hmm: fish and chips wrapped in newspaper (although my dad thinks its unhygenic) and bangers and mash! Bangers and mash is basically sausage and mash potato... :D And then you have the good old Sunday roast...which i rarely have on Sundays hehe...
But i love Italian food as well...just so yummy! French food automatically makes me think of escargot..but breakfast is nice, with the croissants and chocolate buns..

Haggis... ...left over sheepy bits stuffed into its gut...
As for caviar...i came across it when i was on holiday and the waiter asked me how i liked my caviar lol...my friend quipped nowhere near my plate...

:hmm: interesting. according to this article (http://www.stim.com/Stim-x/9.2/fries/fries-09.2.html), french fries are indeed either from france or belgium.

Okay, I clicked on the link to that page, and on that page, I clicked on the "Take Me to the Fries" (http://www.stim.com/Stim-x/9.2/fries/fries-sidebar-09.2.html) link.
And according to them:
"The Dutch, however, cannot take responsibility for inventing the fry. Neither can the French. That honor goes to the Belgians, where fries are cherished even more than they are in Holland."
And then later on:
"It is only in the United States that the nomenclature of fried potatoes insinuates a French connection. In England they are called "chips," in France "pommes frites" (which means, literally, "fried apples"), and in Belgium and Holland "patat" (not the word for potato, which is "aardappel"). The French fry has little to do with France other than the fact that it's popularity spread to that country as quickly as it did to others. In fact, the French, like most of Europe, eyed the potato with suspicion until the last century or two."

Sinny - escargot? :bigyuck:
 i was discussing the many names of the 'french fry' with a friend the other week. And i never knew they were that popular in Holland...but the Belgians? Had no idea it was them hehe...
Maybe the Americans got confused between the French and the Belgians? :? *shrugs
Thanks to both sauerkraut and vunsin..learn something new everyday.. :D

thanks vunsin for enlightening us! there are so many odd names for food. i wonder if hamburgers are really from hamburg. or berliners from berlin. :hmm:

Oh... btw... did you guys know that they renamed "French Fries" to "Freedom Fries" (and replaced everything that has "French" in it with "freedom") because France didn't want to take part in the war. :shifty: I mean, not officially, of course. But still...

yeah, i've heard that bit about french fries being renamed to freedom fries, cos the german media was quite... er... protective of the french (wow, that's news :wink2: ), cos neither the french nor the german wanted to support the war.
jessca: that's great! yvonne's definitely a great singer. she's just released a new single. :wink2:

waah... are you serious? escargots? frog legs? :glug: no offense, but that sounds pretty revolting to me. call me old-fashioned, but i'd rather stick to chicken, pork, beef and seafood.

01-22-2004, 11:27 PM
I was pretty disgusted by the thought of frogs legs until my dad assured me that the 'frogs' werent slimy green frogs that you see by the ponds but edible farm-reared frogs...all the same, i had a bit and it seemed like chicken to me....but i didnt manage a lot...
But escargot? Minus the shell its basically slugs... :bigyuck: Sinny..how!?!
Come to think of it...would they be like welks? (is that how you spell them?) Seafood which you eat with a pin....all seafood is kinda sluggy... :glug:

Hehe i've had frog legs (well my mum made me try them!) and yeh they taste a lot like chicken to me too...but slightly different...I don't know...tried it once and never will again - didnt like them...as for escargot...never tried but hehe I would give it a go...I'm up for any kind of weird cuisine.
Food over here is so plain compared to other countries...can't believe our 'national' dish is fish and chips! :glug: Italian food on the other hand is really good and so is spanish tapas...kinda reminds me of chinese food. :)

what an interesting thread! snails and frog legs! my dad had a frog leg RIGHT IN FROM OF ME i thought i was going to puke.
i only really like italian food...and fries. i think belgians consume more fries a year than any country in the world! even america. did someone say that? oops.
i like this one greek/yugoslavian dish. i know this guy who is yugo/greek (a war sometime?) and its like a crepe....with potato and meat and yogurt. its really yum when its fresh. i LOOOOOVE crepes, those are the best. with strawberries, and i like cheese quiche. french food, yum yum. and chocolate croissants. :excited: im getting hungry

And french fries really are Belgian! My dad was loading boxes of frozen chips into the car for his shop, and they had 'Produce of Belgium' stamped on the box! :D
I dont think ive had a lot of Greek food before and crepes are lovely, especially when they are freshly made and piping hot...

Okay... I'd like to know if there are any Greek food that taste good... You know, nothing too exciting.
My only experience with Greek food had been a horrible one. Two years ago, my Canadian net friend came to Michigan, US to visit me. Since there was absolutely nothing to do in Kalamazoo, my boyfriend and I took him to Chicago (2 hours West) and Detroit (2-/12 hours East). In Chicago, where there's a Chinatown, we had yummy Chinese food.
But when we went to Detroit, we wanted to try something different. We were driving around with no clear purpose and we reached Greektown. It was the first time there for all of us. We chose a random restaurant and had a hard time deciding because those stuffs on the menu looked really strange! Finally, we decided on something. We ordered three appetizers (huge servings) and just one entree (or so we thought). Okay, before I go on, I want to say that the appetizers totally sucked! I don't remember what I ordered anymore, but they were sure yucky! :rasp:
Anyhow, dinner came, and the stupid waiter misunderstood and thought we wanted THREE identical meals! We were too polite to tell him he'd made a mistake and since we didn't really eat the appetizer anyhow, we kinda wanted more food, you know. So... we tried the dish, and it totally sucked too! :bigyuck: We didn't know what to do...
We barely ate anything, even my boyfriend, and his nickname was (and still is) human garbage disposal! :shifty: We just paid and left. And all three of us swore off Greek food for the rest of our lives! Well... as long as we don't get senile anyhow.
So tell me... was there simply something wrong with that particular restaurant, or do Greek food just suck? :?

i don't think that greek food's awful in general. as a matter of fact, it's quite popular in germany. :wink2: the most popular dishes are gyros with tsatsiki (not sure how to spell it in english). basically, it's grilled meat (pork, i think), with a nice yoghurt garlic dressing. it's quite delicous. :wink2:
has anyone ever tried goat cheese? it actually tastes quite interesting, once you get used to it. but based on my experience, most asians hate cheese, esp. goat cheese. well, i think i'm an exception then. :wink2:
vunsin
02-01-2004, 09:58 PM
They have gyros in my school but my guess is that they (the cooks) have no idea what they're doing. :shifty: And I'll leave it at that. :shifty:
Oh... I love cheese, all sorts of cheese. Goat cheese is more expensive compared to other regular types of cheese. You don't just eat it plain though, right? There's something that goes with it.

i went to a couple of french restaurants as a "field trip" back in my high school french class (really nice teacher!) and at first, i only tried the "coventional" french food (which is REALLY YUMMY! ) but one day, i decided to be brave & tried the escargots (aka snails...) and they're GOOD!!! :) i only had them 2-3 times, but i highly recommend it!
also, french (as well as lots of other european countries) are known for their yummy (but fattening... ) deserts!!! hehehe~
just thinking about them make my mouth water~ yummy!!!

yeah, it is indeed called bratwurst in germany. germany's quite famous for bratwurst and sauerkraut. :wink2: traditional german food happens to be kind of fat and greasy, but it's nice to indulge once in a while.
vunsin: well, you can have it either plain or with something else. greek usually have it with olives, if i'm not completely wrong. :hmm: the price depends on where you live, i guess. it's not that expensive in germany, but that's probably due to the fact that we have lots of greek ppl around, and (as i mentioned) that goat cheese is quite popular among germans.

 lol, well, there are lots of ppl who would agree with you, but the netherlands have always been famous for their cheese (at least in germany), so i thought you'd perhaps like it. :wink2:
nope. sauerkraut is sour cabbage. it's often served with bratwurst. :wink2:

feta cheese is goat cheese, right? they use those a lot on greek salads.
i've tried gyros before and i found it really tasty and delicious. maybe it just depends on who makes them cuz i've also tried one from another store that ddnt taste like the other ones i've eaten at all! i also find that the gyros is very similar to the iranian kebabs. there's a restaurant, which was like a fastfood chain, in florida that makes really good gyros. i forgot the name but i remember their sign had a crocodile on it and the dominant color was pink, i think. very florida but i dont know if the chain exists only in florida.
ok..so aside from gyros, i like crepes, croissants, esp the ones that i've tried in paris - they had different types and not all of them look like the typical croissant we know, spanish food - paella, sardines and others. italian food is an all-time favorite.
:bleh: yummy. this thread is making me hungry. hehe.

As I used to live in UK, I think I am always cannot forget the taste of the original fish and chips, baked potatoes, jacked potatoes, and Shepherd pie... It is so ordinary, but I always can't get enough.
Home made pizza selling in small shops on the roadside of Italy is also very yummy and the Cheese fondu from Switzerland is very tasty..
What I don't really like is anything consists of lamp :rasp: So smelly, can't stand it. I tried eating it with my hand squeezing my nose, it didn't help a bit.
