Correct me I'f I'm wrong but I haven't seen anyone post this topic before so I decided to post it up!!! Anyway, does anyone watch this series?? I'm so SO addicted to it more than any other series and in my opinion, it so SO diao!!!! There are so many amazing scenes (like pehaps the show-off of skateboarding skills, rollerblade skills, even motorbike and bicycle showdown!!!!) and funny scenes as well...and the cast are HELLA GOOD!!!! I love Esther and Zaizai, especially Tony!!!! Haha...they're so cute... :love:

Ok...so since most of you doesn't know what it's al about, I'll give you a brief definition....

The story revolves around a gang that inhabits a popular place called "West Street" or "Xi Jie"...Now this gang, composed of 3 guys and 1 girl (ok...she doesn't count as a girl to me in the series) are merely teenage kids who loves bluffing around and making chaos, but in actual fact, they're heroes of West Street because they help citizens in need. Anyway, the gang stars Tony Sun which acts as You Ya yu, the leader of the gang who was expelled from school for defying their principal and was searching for his father who had abandoned them since hetr mother got pregnant. There's also Jason Xu, who poses as Feng Ai Sen, a teenwip who's obsessed with science and inventions (his nickname is actually "Ai Se Tan" or Einstein...he invents weird gadgets that makes him both a genius and an idiot :happy: ) And there's Ren Fu, who acts as Wang Xing Jie, a movie freak who loves pissing girls off with his good 'ol tongue. And lastly, there's the new member of a group called R&B named Lichen Chou or Zai Zai (don't ask me why she got her nick...you'll probably kill me) who poses as the tomboy who loves beautiful girls. Together they form a group called "203" and has the motto of "WE ARE THE BEST" ...

There are so many characthers in the story, first we'll start with:

Lan Yu Li (Esther Liu of Sweety) - a girl who thinks that West Street is inhibited with criminals, she goes posing off as a female heroine and goes bickering with Yayu who later on falls for her...

Xing Wang (Wallace Huo) - a Harvard geek who went to West Side to look for Yayu...he apparently want to befriend him, but since he doesn't know how, he ended up as Yayu's rival. He's also inlove with Yu Li...well, sort of...

Shen Yin He (Cyndi Wang) - a bright sudent who's unfortunate background pushed her to become a social girl. She's had only one dream, and that is to be taken care of. Fortunately she met Xing Wang, who is willing to take her for 3 years and be payed without doing anything.

Tian Le - a mysterious guy who goes robbing banks to give Yin He the money. He wants her to stop being a social girl.

You Lan Lan - Yayu's mother who loves Hello Kitty.

You Ya Wa - Yayu's brother who hates him.

hmm... personally, I'd never place an age cap on any show... since I still watch sesame street and have a whole lot of fun. (there are others like myself out there) so I won't really say this show is only for the under 16...

I'll have to agree that the plot is weak, but it makes up with the interesting scenes. Maybe you think the show is silly but it does make me laugh and I call that entertainment... (just like variety shows, they have no point but to make us laugh/keep us entertained)

As for the 'fake' fight scenes... well, it's supposed to be that way.. if you haven't realised, they are trying to mix in 'anime' features... the producers did it on purpose... I kind of like that, cos I am a big anime fan. so it's interesting for me to watch the 'anime tainted' fights

in conclusion, the show is not all bad... just could have been better if the plot is more 'solid'

yeah the story's pretty crap, i heard they kinda make it up as they go along, as in the actors also dunno wat's gonna happen in the next episodes.
but i have to bring your attention to Huo Jian Hua, who plays the Harvard geek Xing Wang, he's the reason i'm watching the whole show even though all the other cast irritates me no end. He's got to be the only guy better looking than Jay, cos i kinda shifted my attention to him when he came out. His eyes are arrogant and cool, and he's got a perfect face. i dunno about his talent but at least he can act better than those losers in the show, who i can never be sure what they're supposed to be feeling, they just look shifty and uncomfortable like they're gonna burst out laughing anytime.

okay, some of their acting skills are still raw... they are newbies mind you. Give them a chance... give them some time...

but I'd say there is some decent acting from Tony sun, wallace and esther (to a certain extent extent for esther)...

as I mentioned in an earlier post... this show was supposed to be a 'human anime'... the producers meant it that way... so some of the expression/acting is exaggerated, and it's meant to be that way... (if you watch enough anime, especially Japanese ones, you'd understand) maybe it's a bad idea to get human actors to do 'anime-like' acting... but that's what they are attempting (notice how the mix in manga stills here and there?), give them some credit for trying...

I am not a fan of 5566 or anything... just trying to offer a different perspective...

perhaps if you look at the show in this perspective, then things aren't that bad?

Oh...I love Wallace too!!!! I actually wanted to post a pic of him in the show...anyway, well...I love the series, but of course, that doesn't mean that I can't see through them...Wallace's characther is so SO pathetic that I can't bear to watch him do those skateboarding stuff...did you see him manouver that??? He loooks like as if he was trying to be young when he's not...haha...ok, kill me now.... :oops:

Anyway, I like the love storyline....A gangster leader paired with an assuming-female-heroine, a Harvard Geek paired with a social girl, and a Science freak paired with a completely, boyish, playgirl....naah....I'm naive you know...Lattae's right...It IS anime-ish in its own way that I get to love it...really :love:

Actually I quite like this series. din think that it is only suitable for those under 16, instead I feel that this is a fairly nice show, though there are 1 or 2 times I tink is quite "wu liao"(silly).

5566 acted not bad too, i dun like sun xie zhi initially but his image & acting in the series cause me to like him now. As for the anime part, I like the effect of the comic feel, so its a plus to me. I like the songs & background music too, really suits the series, esp chun zai, can be v touching.

chun zai is a pretty nice song... but I think for the background music part, I prefer the song 'sa gua qing ren' (silly lover), cos it's got a happy tune yet an ironically melancholic lyrics... it brings out the atmosphere/feeling of a 'silly lover' giving so unconditionally even though his efforts go unrecognised that sort of thing...

Nah....We're the same!!! There are so many touching scenes in there...like perhaps the one in which Esther was actually injured just to make that VCD for Tony....so nice :blush: ...and yah, he does look like Toro...well, sort of...His face and his eyes...Whaha!!! I'll go killing any girl just to be his anytime...And I love the song Jian Ao better than Cun Zai...the one in which Tony sang with Cyndi....oh well...It's better that way... :happy:

oh well... perhaps the reason why Meteor Garden (MG) was more smooth sailing was due to the fact that it was based on a well recieved anime/manga (westside story wasn't, westside was written to 'reflect' 5566's character and such...)

besides MG had a very clear plot weave around romance, and a smaller cast... which kept things very neat... whereas for west side, I think the producers were a little to ambitious to include so many characters/relationship... so things became messy... that's the only major drawback...

and I agree with the 'ou xiang ju' factor... it's just meant to be an eye candy like all the teen flicks and such... but teen filcks can be real entertainment (just look at smallville) .... so give these people a chance... at least they are willing to try...

I have watch that show too and many of my friends are watching it becos they are the fans of 5566. I think the reason why this drama attracts a lot of pple is becos of the actions in the drama like the fighting actions and biscycle showdown and it mostly attracts the pple below 18 including me, my brother and my cousin.

Another thing I found is there are a lot of first time actor in the drama like the members from the group R&B, one of the member of sweety if I am not wrong called Yan Yan, Wang Xin Ling and also Huo Jian Hua. So the drama is more teenagers style as there are many young actors acting on it and most of then are singers not actor so many are first time actor. So if you asked your parents to watch this drama, they may not be interested in the drama.

Hey, I'm going to raise my voice here. I'm 25 and I enjoy watching the show!!! So, it's basically isn't targeted for young audience only. Just as mentioned by lattae, you guys need to see it from different perspective. Lighten up guys. It's just a show. It only meant to get you entertained.

The only drawback from this show is having too many casts and too many relationships. But, I don't really like to take this show seriously. Westside Story is meant to be a serial (like Friends)... they have different story in each chapter. In the beginning of the chapter, they encountered problem, and the problem ended as the chapter ends. There isn't any specific plot put in the show... so if we want to enjoy this show, don't expect something like "Love at the Dolphin Bay" or "Meteor Garden" where you get this serious strong plot. To tell you the truth, I'm kind of sick with the complicated drama plot. And this Westside Story is something fresh and new.

I enjoy watching it so much. It's like I'm reading a comic. ANd I think the casts aren't that bad either. The characters meant to be comical and I think they all fit the comic figure. I give Tony a two thumbs up in his acting here. Watching him is like watching the anime version of Ya Yu. He's perfect for the role. Esther's acting is also quite good for first timer. Her high pitched voice is very funny and her expression is very natural, and she made me laughs. And my most favorite part in the show is where Yu Li nags with her high pitched voice, and Ya Yu scold her to "Shut Up!". Their relationship reminds me of Dao Ming Shi and Shan Tsai who fighted all the time, but helplessly in love. I know.... it's very teenager-ish... but hey... teenage love does have its own sweetness.

So I think this show is pretty nice. It's far from sucks... really. I personally think it's more entertaining than MVP lover because WS has this humor side that made me laughs all the time. And there are also some touching and romantic scenes and the stunts are pretty impressive. So despite of how people say it's kind of stupid and unrealistic, I think Westside Story needs to have some praises for its creativity and freshness. And anyway, guys... this is a "story" as if a "fiction". It doesn't need to make sense. We all need to be able to appreciate this show if we aren't just lighten up a bit. Trust me. :wink2:

Even though I've met them and attend their autograph session, I thought it was nothing great.... until this moment.... when I fall in love with Tony after Xi Jie. :love: Tony wasn't this hot when he played as Taizi in MVP. Seriously. Besides, Ya yu has always be my perfect dream guy.:rolleyes:

Well, I really don't like Yin He's character. (And I don't really like Cyndi that much either to help me liking Yin He). That's the problem. So the idea of having this one girl that I don't liked, being liked by two hot guys (Shao Wei and Wallace) just irks me. :dry:

That's so true. Too many relationship in the story would make be a downfall and make the story too dragging. Actually, I'm more agree if Xing Wang could be the third person between Miejueshitai and Ya Yu. YOu know how great romance story always have that 3rd person so that you can see the jealous expression of the guy. (Just like how DMS jealous of Hua Zhe Lei in MG) So the main story is just the relationship between Ya Yu and MIejueshitai with some Xing Wang in the middle. (as if I'm the writer of this serial) :sweat: :oops:

Anyway, a little off topic here, but I'll spill just for you. :happy:
My impression of Tony, hm... he has a really tanned skin, and not to tall... well... kind of short. He wore a sleeveless blue top and basketball pants (because 5566 were going to play a game with some of the fans) and his arms were very muscular and defined (just like Jay's). He smiled a lot to the fans. Gorgeous smile! :love: I remembered I kept calling Shao Wei all the time, but he seemed to ignore all who shouted for his name. And I shouted Tony's name ONCE, and he looked at me and smiled and waved. OMG... *feels like fainting* Then in the autograph session, I didnt' come upclose to them because I didn't have their album at the time. I was just accompanying my cousin. My cousin said that the girl behind her said "Tony, I love you." And Tony looked up to her and said, "I love you too." My gosh... if I were that girl, I wouldn't be able to sleep for one full week. But anyway, I think Tony is the friendliest of all. He smiled a lot, and he waved a lot. And there's this one group of girls who danced with their "Ai Qing Man You" song... and they watched from the back corner.... and suddenly Tony and Zax came up and followed their dance step. It was very funny because the dance step was very girlish. BUt they're like sniggering while dancing with them. Well, later on... everybody came up and dance the Ai Qing Man You dance and everybody totally screamed and ignore the girl dancers. But I envy those dancers, because they got to get upclose with 5566, and even had 5566 watched them dance.

ok back to topic. well, i dont think that westside is better than MG I at least. westside does not really has a story focus. its sort of jumble up to me. BUT the only good thing is it is funnier, a more relax drama, esp with the animations. i think it is just so much like a comic. the storyline is very simple, relaz, easy to underst.. like summer, the reason why i like watchin westside is "it is simply like watching a comic". if u like reading comics, i think u will like this drama. i haven really seen a drama tt is so much like a comic. even MG, i read the comic, but watching the MG drama, they are just different, in terms of plot, they did change some parts to make it more real life. comics are not so realistic. thus i prefer the comic MG than the drama MG.

summer... actually westside is 25 episodes.. not 24. i already finish watching so yeah, it's 25 episodes.. the 1st 2nd and 3rd volumes have 6 discs each [each dish one episode] and the 4th volume has 7 discs.. plus the last episode, of course... so it's altogether 25 episodes... :happy: anw, yeah, i liked xi jie more than mg... coz i think mg is kinda lame.. esp the "you'll be dead" thingy... :sweat: yeah.. and i think the mg comic was nicer too... then xi jie.. i haven't read the comic yet but i think i will though i have a feeling that the show would be nicer than the comic.. :oops: yeah...

Unlike in MG where DMS just bluntly kissed SC even before they went out.... isn't it sweet when Ya Yu ONLY hugged Yu Li from behind and stroke her cheek the first time he revealed his feelings for her. It shows how Ya Yu isn't one of that impulsive kind of guy. (MY goSHHH... how I wish I was Esther!!! :rolleyes: )

Merriana, the reason I like Ya Yu better is because like a guy who has some bad-boy traits but is actually kind at heart. :love: (That's very Ya Yu, right) And Ya Yu is the type of guy who doesn't do every single thing in the name of love. Though he likes a girl, he distributes his attention evenly to everyone. He liked Miejueshitai, but he still let his logic works. Unlike Taizi... he's one TOO perfect guy and he did EVERYTHING in the name of love. And I think his character is kind of too perfect and unreal. That's why I didn't go gaga over Taizi. And I think Ya Yu looks a lot hotter. I like his streetwear and his ponytail. ^_^

I totally agree with summer jie... it's like ya yu has this like 'flaw' and I like flawed characters (esp heroes)... it makes them human... so I think I like ya yu a little more than taizi :happy:

merriana jie... ya see, the whole story is connected.. but.. the reason why they're split up into 4 volumes is basically because of one thing... money... :oops: yeah... coz 5566 is supposed to be the main attraction for this series.. people are bound to buy the series.. so they split it up to make more money ya see... hee... just like how mg2 was split up into a few parts too... but i didn't buy that one, of course... i only bought westside...
and.. haha.. i like both yayu and taizi! afterall, taizi was the role that made me fall in love with tony... :wink2:

well, like *meow said, money is one of the factors... when they launched each vol they sell at about SGD20... then the price will drop gradually as the days pass (cos the really interested fans/addicts would have acquired it already)... now the combined box with all the epis go for about 35SGD as I last saw it... compare that with 4vol X 20SGD... world of difference

and the other factor is that the show is still in production when the first box/vol was launched thanks to the fans demand... so they had to sell in separate boxes, as and when the next batch is ready.

There were some parts which were too lengthy and ridiculous. :dry: But i love the mystery of the plot. And the philosophies that were brought up. It's like getting to hafe a deeper knowledge of life. :happy: Moreover, the philosophy are not crap made up, but rather true i think.

Wallace was rather funny in some aspects. I think he's crap in the show. Being so lame and all! :laughing: Gosh, like a lunatic. Lols! He's funny. I love his name. Xing Wang. Sounds cool to me. :laughing:

I reckon westside story is pretty good.. it's not those sad and serious.. tear jerking stories like lavender or dolphin bay.. but it was good for a change I guess.. out of all those typical type 'ou xiang ju' ^^ so yeah.. westside story is more like a comical serie, the one that is intended to make people laugh with their light hearted storyline.. so nothing in the plot really goes all that deep ^^ But it was a well done tho.. some scene is shoo sweet.. ^_____^ that when ya yu run all the way to tell yu li that she should come not only because of yin he.. and the part when he still sends her home even with him half blinded, on wang xing jie's bike.. so sweeeet ><

aww.. xiezhi acted shoo good in here... he is so in character.. when he was crying because of his dad's diary.. OH.. and when he was crying when he is eating the ice cream~~~ that was shoo good.. I feel like crying with him ><;; well in a newspaper article it was said that ya yu's character was made FOR tony to act it out.. since it pretty much reflects his old rebel self.. heeh.. anyway to choose between ya yu and taizi.. hmm can i have a misture of both?? LOL.. ya yu is cool and sweet.. and taizi is sooo sweet and rich ^___^;; well instead of that... i'll just have sun xie zhi.. LOL..

Oh yeah that ai sen and da beck's version.. I think it is okay. Maybe because the story is too teenage-ish and doesn't make sense to me, and I have never been a fan of any of the actors/actresses in that serial. The story about Wallace Huo and Cindy Wang is not bad though...
