Netball....NZ won the netball in 2003, but how times has AUS won it????? about 10 times? :hmm:

Rugby Union...okay so we lost the world cup but at least we got into the finals.....plus we have won it on 2 other occasions.... :D

Rugby League.....well the Warriors are a formidable team, but it was a sydney-based team, the Penrith Panthers who won the premiers this season....the kiwis have yet to win their first....

basketball....well, we all gotta admit. both the aussies and the kiwis are pretty average in this area.... :sleeping:

soccer....hey you guys don't even have an established comp! the Football Kingz is playing in the AUS national league and last time i checked, the kiwis haven't yet won a game this season.... :whistle:

Tennis....we have Lleyton Hewitt unfortunately (former world number 1), Mark Phillopousis, Pat Rafter, the legendary Rod Laver, and other well known players, but what about NZ? come to think of it, i've never heard of a NZ tennis player...... :rock:

swimming.......ahhhh......Ian Thorpe, Grant Hackett, Matt Welsh, Susie O'Neill, Michael Klim, Geoff Huegill, Dawn Fraser....etc.....etc......etc..... :thumbsup:

i wasn't arguing, just pointing out some facts in a friendly nature.

olympics.....i generally prefer to watch the swimming, gymnastics and soccer. the only prob is because of the time difference we prolly won't get to see anything live, maybe only highlights.

um...the olympics will be held in August tho, coz it would be summer over in Athens.

i really don't think the population of a country necessarily determines whether they are successful in sports (or anything else) or not. look at Japan. the country is about the same size as NZ yet they have a population of 127 million compared to NZ's 4 million!!! :crazy: even with that many ppl crowded onto their 4 main islands, their sporting feats are quite average. they have some outstanding soccer players as well as baseballers and of course sumo wrestlers....but in other sports, they don't exactly stand out.

i believe aust does so well (and the USA also) in various sports becoz our country and government invests in it. aust is a "sporting nation" and many sports are supported and funded by the government for training and development, that's why we have so many outstanding individuals, it's becoz they've been given the opportunity ever since they were little to train in good facilities and with professional coaches. so really, size and population can be taken into account, but if the country wants to excel in the area of sports, it's not impossible regardless of population.

a country with a large population is able to put larger funds into sporting investment such as the aus institute of sport because their economy is able to generate larger amounts of money. the average income in australia is much higher than nz (the standerd of living is higher too).from this, we are able to conclude that the australian governemtn is able to earn more money from tax revenue through the greater population and higher incomes.

economically australia has enough money to put more funds into sport science, such as the american governent has large surplus finds to use on military expenditure. (the idea of low marginal costs and economies of scale)

a small country such as nz with 4 mill peeps. the governtment cant afford to spend dollars on sport as other areas are of greater priorty (education, haelth care etc)

when u use japan as an example of a high population, crappy at sports, u have to take in account the mainstream sports in that country and their cultural attitue to sport (play sport or get a good education). id say japan is the best at sumo and kendo lol. likewise usa is good at american football, basketball etc, and malaysia/indonesia good at badminton. its like comparing oranges to apples. the jap government probably chooses to pump money bak into the economy through R&D expenditure, hence there powerfull economy.

at the olympics it is the large powerful wealthy nations that win the most medals. why? they got the money and the large population to choose from. there are a few exceptions such as kenya and the bahamas (u know its crazey how fast they run, u could also argue its in the genes why kenyans win all the long distance events).

in conclusion, population (and money) are the major contributing factors to a countries sporting success.

And actually, if you use the proportion / population argument, Australia is the #1 country in the world, based on Olympic results. um. ive actually played aussie rules (gaelic football) at school. ive watched 40 plus games. its played in nz every sunday morning on prime tv which i watch while eating my breakfast at 11am. as far as i can tell its a whole lot of people scatter all over the feild kicking the ball to each other until someone gets the opportunity to catch on the full and hav a free kick at the posts or they get it thought the posts with lots of hairy guys on their back LOL.

still a stupid ass game.. but unfortunately the only thing to watch on a sunday morning when all the other channels are chruch group stuff.

unless u r able to explain to me what kind of strategyr their are or game plans than can be implemented to make the game interesting for people that watch sport for skill and variation of gameplay. as far as i can tell people only watch this game because they wana c guys bash each other hahahahahha. there no offsides or anything what a joke of a game lol.

Err.. your point is? Soccer too, is basically a game where players kick the ball to each other all over the field, until one side gets lucky and it goes in the net. Hey, play your cards right and you might even score a penalty corner. Golf is a game where you try and hit the ball into a hole. Tennis is a game where you whack the ball to your opponent until it hits the net. Basketball is a game that involves running up and down the court trying to get it through a hoop. OoOh, free shots are given there too.

You watch too much AFL for someone who dislikes it and find it stupid, haha. I live in Aus and even I'm not that interested. i wasn't attacking you. i was merely questioning you on your opinion that AFL isn't strategic, i didn't say anything about you as a person. i've never played AFL or watch it much, therefore i was curious as to why you thought the sport isn't strategic.

NZ is actually quite good for a country that is quite substantially small to australia
We all know the All Blacks are the pinnacle and the best at rugby

Other than that we've been pretty solid

The NZ breakers team have been great this year considering their standards. Have been able to string a couple of good games together, and have been able to close out tight games more.
Wellington phoenix have also improved tremendously this year.
Both NZ teams are close to making the playoffs for the first time ( I think? :whistle:)

Well NZ cricket is a rebuilding phase, thus we dont have much firepower as the aussies. But aussies are probably the best at that sport :shy:
