View Full Version : Vietnamese music, anyone?

Okay, if anyone's ever bothered to listen to any Vietnamese songs, the first thing that comes to mind is the word "primitive". Song composition is anything but original and occassionally you'll run into one of those screeching opera-type songs that makes you want to run away.

But as someone who just recently got into Vietnamese music (again), there are the few occassional songs that really tug at you that makes listening to all the generic crap worth while. Vietnamese music is wonderful at depressing you, if nothing else.

I just thought I'd show an example of some songs that are really great. As soon as I buy a couple more Vietnamese CDs, I'll be uploading a bunch. Right now, I only have CDs from my new love - Tran Thai Hoa.

Edit: Change of songs since I apparently didn't upload properly. =/ Here are some songs off of Tran Thai Hoa's album, Cô láng giềng. There are about four that I really like, so hope you guys enjoy. They're all in WMA format, unfortunately, because my cousin doesn't seem to have a proper CD ripper.

01. Cô láng giềng (Girl Next Door) (http://downloads.tsoba.net/01colang.wma)
02. Cây đàn bỏ quên (Forgotten Guitar) (http://downloads.tsoba.net/02caydan.wma)
03. Đường em đi (The Road You Walked On) (http://downloads.tsoba.net/03duong.wma)
04. Con đường tình ta đi (The Emotional Road I'm Going On) (http://downloads.tsoba.net/04conduong.wma)

Note: These are really crap translations of the song titles since my Vietnamese still isn't completely up to par. -.-;;

I'd be interested in giving Vietnamese music a try. Seriously though, no offense to anyone who'd Vietnamese or fans of Vietnamese music, my friends and I just couldn't stop giggling and chuckling everytime we go into any of those Vietnamese stores selling oriental food items or Vietnamese restaurants in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The music is so, er, funny! It's even funnier when we go to the small CD sections. If we don't look closely, we'd just think that they were selling pirated copies of Faye Wong, Sammi Cheng, the four heavenly kings, and other HK or Taiwanese artists' CDs. But upon closer inspection, those CDs actually contain Vietnamese versions of those original songs! And then when we go into one of those restaurants for our favorite beef noodle soup, they'd actually have big TV screens and karaoke for Vietnamese songs (read: Chinese hit songs with Vietnamese lyrics)!

Alright, so, if anyone has anymore suggestions (as in ORIGINAL good Vietnamese music), please post them.

*sigh* Sadly, Vietnamese music isn't really the highest quality. I generally stay away from the scary cai lung (which I think is the opera-ish music). I doubt there are very many good Vietnamese stores with the exception of the stores in Santa Ana... I think that's the most heavily populated Vietnamese city in the U.S.

Anywho, there's only one major, quality production company that seems to have all the better CDs, which is Thuy Nga.

Thuy Nha is a 60-something year old woman who began this concert/show that they put on a few times a year called Paris By Night. The concerts are released onto DVD and VHS for people who'll buy them.

During the show, various artists sing old Vietnamese/Chinese songs and also showcase some of their newer songs. There are also the occassional comedy sketches as well as guest stars (i.e. the Caucasian man who can speak Vietnamese and rhyme out poetry).

What sets Paris By Night apart from the more bootleg looking stuff is the fact that they have the help of French producers, set designers, etc. etc. The stage never looks quite the same and it's truly gorgeous when compared to other shows like Von Son (funny guy, he is).

*cough* And that ends Linny's Vietnamese music lecture of the day~! I better get uploading some more songs. >.<

I listen to viet music when i have the time some songs are good but the rest don't have rthym. i like
Thuy Duong because she sings thoses old songs. for modern songs i like the sisters truc lam and truc linh, thuy tien, nhu quynh, lam nhat tien and lay minh.

hey linny you watch PBN 20 th anniversary too i see. which song did you like the best?

linny

I don't know. I actually liked PB 68 better than 71 (because the theme was so pretty). In 71, I'd say I like Tran Thai Hoa's performance of "Thuo Ay Co Em", the duet between Lam Nhat Tien and Nhu Quynh at the end of disc 1, and I LOVED the performance by Bao Han near the end of disc 2 though! It was so much like watching Chicago and I couldn't believe she sewed that dress all by herself!

I think Truc Lam and Truc Linh are cute, but did you see them in 71? They looked scarily thin! It's just WRONG.

Nhu Quynh's probably my favorite female singer. She's one of the few who consistently sings good songs during the PBs and her face is surprisingly attractive. Like, at first glance, you'd think her face is too simple looking or too plain, but the more you look at her, there's this simplistic beauty about her. And! She looks GREAT in traditional clothing.

Vietnamese music really isn't THAT great to listen to when compared to other types released by say Chinese or Japanese artists, but I suppose I'm starting to really like it because more often than not, the songs have this heavy, depressing feel to them. Plus, Vietnamese music uses instruments like the er hu a lot, and I really adore listening to that.

Hey linny... I couldn't download that song in your first post. It keeps saying done or completed but it's only 60kb. What have I been doing wrong? :?

yeah, linny..i had the same problem as vunsin..i downloaded the song..it was only 60 kb..but when i tried to listen to it..it wouldnt work.!! o0 and my opinion on viet music is that the songs that i've heard seem to all be translated music, mostly translated chinese music..so i never really bothered to listen to much viet music..basically what vunsin said.

Aaaah, I'm so sorry guys. I forgot that I didn't completely upload it because my modem was being funny at the time. Bah, I'll just upload that song when I get the CD when it comes out. I've uploaded four other songs instead.

Sorry for the mishap. ^^;;;

I listen to Vietnamese songs. But only (or mainly) PBN (Paris By Night). I don' t listen to Asia because most of their singers sings English, but I like their MC's. I don't speak Vietnamese though, I just listen to the songs if they are good. I have no clue what they are singing though. I watch PBN on DVD's. Like I just bought Minh Tuyet's CD, "Ngay Xua Anh Hoi". It's a pretty good album. She's a good singer. Most Vietnamese songs are taken from Chinese, Korean, and etc. and then translated.

I hate the ones where singers sing Cai Luong (I think), those weird voices and they turn off the instruments and start singing very weird. I always skip those songs and go on to the songs that are more pop-ish. I like the song "Sunday Buon" by Bao Han and Nhu Loan from PBN69. I like singers that sings more of the modern songs.

So far I have the latest Thuy Nga, PBN73 is it? The one with Bao Han and Ho Le Thu singing "It's Raining Men". This one is pretty good, but the best so far I think would be PBN68 in San Jose. I practically like every song in that one. Especially the song from Minh Tuyet, "Tham Goi Ten Anh".

has anyone ever heard of the viet singer Cam Ly? She is heaps good! There was this one song that i heard when i was in VN holidaying with my family..its about war and some lyrics are:

hac cuc ca so di han thu

which roughly translates to:

sing a song to take away the hatred

has anyone ever heard it? she loks liek halina tam in my opinion!

htruc
09-08-2004, 12:33 AM
Yea, I know who Cam Ly is. She is a VN singer. She is Minh Tuyet's sister right? Now that you've mentioned it, she does look a little like Halina Tam. Never heard of the song though. I only listen to Vietnamese music from Thuy Nga (USA).

linny
09-08-2004, 02:37 AM
Sadly, I only listen to Thuy Nga artists too... I've heard of Cam Ly, but I've never actually heard her music. O.o; I'm such a Paris By Night person. I prefer it so much more when compared to Asia. There's something about Asia's proudctions that just doesn't appeal to me. >.>

Anyway! PBN74 came out a few days ago and my uncle was nice enough to buy it for me. I thought I'd upload a performance with Chi Tai, Tran Thai Hoa and The Son if anyone wants to see. It's not by any means one of the great songs on this particular PBN, but I have a slight blind love for it because Tran Thai Hoa is smiling. A lot.

Right click + save target as to download. (http://www.tsoba.net/downloads/Tran%20Thai%20Hoa,%20The%20Son,%20Chi%20Tai%20-%20Bung%20Sang.mpg)

Chi Tai = old tallest man, The Son = the man with the freakish white teeth, Tran Thai Hoa (my favorite Vietnamese artist to date) = man in middle wearing orange. It's about 45MB and features some tribal song that translates to "[insert word i don't know] Bright". Yar.

bung sang translates to a bright burst of light, pretty much. hey linny, how was PBN74 compared to the others? i want to go buy it, since all i've seen is the clip from the thuy nga website. by the way, you're right, the son does have freakishly white teeth. my dad really hates the guy. :D

That's so sad~ He's actually a very decent singer... even if I like Tran Thai Hoa infinitely better. :D

As for the new PBN, I actually like it a lot better than Song Ca. The theme this time around suits my odd love for the oldies and romantic songs more. Plus, Tran Thai Hoa sings in it THREE times, which is practically heaven for my poor fangilish mind. XD~

Manh Quynh actually ditched Phi Nhung! It was so depressing because I always thought that their music styles really suited each other... There is this music video of Manh Quynh and Nhu Quynh that is sooo hilarious. XD! I dunno, I liked this one. And Ky Duyen's makeup/hair/costume looked really nice this time around.

i dont know about ky duyen's make up, makes her look like she's trying way too hard to be cute. i liked how she was before, but this song is definately a nice one to listen to. and i like manh quynh and phi nhung, but i'm sure nhu quynh and him make a great team too.

Vietnamese music is alright with me, I like listening to the Que Huong artists from PBN like Nhu Huynh, Phi Nhung, Manh Quynh, QUANG LE, or Truong Vu. Gosh, I love Quang Le, his voice is so amazing and he's adorable. He's my adorable Hue guy and that remind me that his Hue accent is to die for!! He need to come out with more albums because I'm getting kind of tiredsome listening to all of his old albums right now.

I think Vietnam artists are great also like Dan Truong, Lam Truong, Ung Hoang Phuc, Van Quang Long, and Quang Dung is good too. Anyhow, I also heard a new PBN just came out someone care to give out some opinions on it before I get my hand on it soon enough.

I just finished watching PBN 74. It was so hilarious when Ky Duyen was trying to speak Mandarin. Did anyone get what she was saying? The only thing that I heard clearly was "Kong Xi Fa Cai", the Happy New Year phrase. All the songs are like oldies. i heard the songs, and was like "I heard this somewhere before!" My parents knew the songs and started singing. They did PBN74 in Toronto, right? The Son is a decent singer, but let me tell you, he cannot dance. Have you seen the ones where he tried to dance? It's so funny! I mean what happened to Luong Tung Quang, Tu Quyen, and all those other singers. You notice the ones in Australia and Canada, you don't see those singers?

Oh great, another one of those dedication to all the oldies songs. I should buy it for my mother I bet she'll enjoy watching it. At least I get to heard one song by Quang Le. Luong Tung Quang and Tu Quyen disapppear somehow I love them two!! The Son is getting a little chubby I use to like him, but now ehhh some of his songs are okay I guess.

Is Lynda Trang Dai pregnant that's why she disappear after singing that "Fame" song? :?

Oh great, another one of those dedication to all the oldies songs.
Haha! Yea, I think there's too much of those. They usually do those things when they perform in Toronto, did anyone notice that? Not many good/exciting concerts from Toronto. And you know most of the worth buying concerts are the ones in San Jose or Paris.

Yea, what ever happened to Lynda Trang Dai? I hate Tommy Ngo, he can't sing. Did you see him in the "Matrix", PBN71 20th Anniversary, and the "Elvis Presley", "Hound Dog" he sang. Horrible. I think the only reason he is in PBN, is because PBN wants a couple married thing to sing. But my gosh! Maybe Lynda Trang Dai is pregnant. I never thought of that.

Speaking of couples, is Phi Nhung and Manh Quynh married? I've always been wondering.

Not only Luong Tung Quang and Tu Quyen. What about Truc Lam and Truc Linh? They are not twins right?

for some reason...I'm not into the whole vietnamese pop thing even though I'm vietnamese. I'm not hating on my own culture, but I think that Chinese, japanese, or korean music sound alot nicer. Vietnamese music just doesn't seem to have style to me...I can't really explain. If any of you guys have listened to viet music..you'll know what i mean. Plus, I always fall asleep to the really ancient sounding ones..it drives me crazy how the yell and stuff.

Yeah, that's so true even though I haven't been to any live shows. Seems like all the stirring concerts are in California cities (like always) and Paris (most of the time). I bought the PBN 74 on DVD the day after I made my post in here. The first disk was so boring I was like falling asleep. I had no clue who the two song writers were and it seem like not many of their songs were appealing to me. The second disk was actually good probably because I perosnally like Song Ngoc's songs and Quang Le was the first to sing the opening song for the second disk which was so GREAT!! :bleh:

I heard Lynda is pregnant so she's like on a break now. She disppear after she sang the song "Fame", notice the meaning of the song was to not forget who she is and always remember her name. I think it was kind of like a farewell song to her fans or something. Tommy Ngo? I thought he was actually good when he started out on PBN then after he got marry to Lynda he went bejerk.

I don't think Phi Nhung and Manh Quynh are marry because Manh Quynh just got marry or is planning to marry his girlfriend in a couple of months. I saw pictures of them at Bang Kieu's wedding. Manh Quynh and Ky Duyen were on this current vietnamese article saying to be marrying soon.

Anyhow, Truc Lam and Truc Linh are real twins!! Believe it or not!! I miss them on PBN. Online people were discussing that they were getting plastic surgery or something that explains their disapperance. :?

khupno0do
09-19-2004, 05:19 AM
but if they had plastic surgery... wouldnt that make them nicer looking and more appealing to the public? then why would they want to hide, or stop with the PBN videos? maybe they just wanted a break from the spotlight...

htruc
10-11-2004, 11:04 PM
Plastic surgery ay? I heard that Nhu Quynh had plastic surgery done on her face. I heard that she was really ugly back then, and then she went to go get plastic surgery. I'm not sure if that's true or not.

I just remembered. Doesn't Bao Han look like Anita Mui? They actually look very similar to me. If I can find pictures than I'll post. But if you can remember who Bao Han is, doesn't she look like Anita Mui?

Yup, Lynda Trang Dai does have a son, a newborn son named, Neo. SO they won't be on Paris By Night for a while even, Tommy Ngo. They need to spend more time with their son.

and anita mui? who's that?

Anita Mui Yan Fang. She's a great singer and actress, but she deceased December 2003. This is a picture of her:
http://csc.ziyi.org/news/120302.jpg

Some of her apprentices include: Denise Ho, Patrick Tang, Andy Hui, Edmond Leung, The Grasshoppers (1980's)

This is a picture of Bao Han:
http://www.baohanvip.com/index.jpg

I couldn't really find a picture of them that look similar, but in real life the way they look, looks more similar. If you have watched Paris By Night Videos or any Anita Mui clips, you'll see that they look very alike.

They are going to have Paris By Night 76 in Canada on October 26, 2004.

khupno0do
10-16-2004, 03:06 AM
wow, they DO look alike. and by the way, did they already film PBN 75, if there's a 76 coming up? and since it's in canada, is it anywhere near toronto, and are you going? any good seat costs a boatload of money, ten fortunes, for me anyway, so tell us about it if you get the chance to see it, because i'll be SOOO jealous. wah

htruc
10-16-2004, 05:40 AM
Yea they do look alike. They filmed Paris by Night 75 already in San Jose around the end of August.

I never went to a concert before. I don't understand Vietnamese anyways. I don't think I'll be able to go because it's a weekday, that means school. It will cost a lot of money, probably over CAN$100 for good spots. It's most likely to be in Toronto. I'm guessing it will probably be one of those dedications to the oldies. :shifty: Anyways you know the Vietnamese newspaper, Thoi Bao, right? You never see the advertisement for Thuy Nga, but always these small concerts with the Libertys or something. It is like when ever they have it in Toronto, it's not that rumoured out. It's like nobody knows about it. Which is definitely not fair.
