If you're both leaving I guess you should say: Jumpa lagi = Meet again (see you).

Haha... this thread is a good idea. I haven't really used my Malay since 1995 (Form 5). Haha... :shy: Especially not after I've come to the U.S. :sweat: I hope people won't think I'm a foreigner when I go home for vacation next year. I haven't been home in more than 4 years. :whistle:

Well, ashley, I wasn't exactly sure if we're discussing "bahasa pasar" or "proper Malay" in here.

Anyhow, the thing with the Malay language is that it's still evolving. Every year, the grammar and the usage and/or spelling of certain words change slightly. That's kinda annoying. Like, every year, I'd have to buy a new Kamus Dewan. :shifty:

Yep...Kamus Dewan is a dictionary. :happy: I have one now but it's pretty "old"--more than 10 years i think (it has become an antique--hehe).I guess my dictionary is really old..so old that some of the rarely-seen-malay-words couldn't be found in it. :?
Anyway...sometimes when i chat on the net with some of the malay fellas,they use too much bahasa pasar,some of it i dun even understand.So,basically they'll go like a'kum--and i was like huh? :? And then when i thought about it..i realised it was actually assalamualaikum (malay way of greeting) .Here are some bahasa pasar which i think are pretty funny...and confusing too!

amenda--apa benda
pekabo?--apa khabar?
opis--office (this couldn't even count as bahasa pasar..it's more to..malay version of the word office).

Note:Those in bold are the formal ones while those in italic are the informal.

Anyway..i've always wondered..what's the exact meaning of "kelentong"?I heard many of my malay friends use it (always!).What does it mean?Does it mean..."tipu"?

I think kelentong means 'talking crap', yeah, in some ways i guess it kinda means tipu.

I doubt kelentong is a formal word...heh.

Anyways, a lot of Malay words are ripoffs from the English language...

communication - 'komunikasi'
compromise - 'kompromi'
fanatic - 'fanatik'
location - 'lokasi'

:) These are proper Malay words, but I think they;re the more modernised version...For example, 'bertolak-ansur' is the proper classic term for 'compromise', but still, 'kompromi' is accepted as formal.Hah, am I making any sense?:)

Um..i dont think kelentong is a formal word.Coz i'm sure if i used the word kelentong in my essay,the teacher will definitely circle the word with red pen! :dry: And the word kelentong kind of gives me the feeling that it's not a really polite word to use.

I never really like those 'rip-off' version of Malay terms from English (except some really cool ones that can enhance your essay), especially the newer ones. Like, remember when the government started replacing the word 'belanjawan' with 'bajet'? That was really tasteless and I'm so glad most Malaysians agree. I still don't see any reason for replacing that word. By the way, both belanjawan and bajet means budget.

Thanks for the clear definition for selamat tinggal and selamat jalan. Honestly, throughout my years of learning Malay, I've never thought there were any differences between that two phrases.

:laughing: I remember when I was like 3 years old and hadn't learned Malay yet and I thought our Indonesian maid meant "police" when she said "mata" because in Chinese (Hakka and Cantonese) "maada" means "police" when in fact she meant "eye" in Indonesian (same in Malay). But after I started learning Malay in school, I found out that adding another "mata" to the word actually meant "police" also. :laughing:

I forgot to add to Ee Ying's kelentong.
The word goreng is also used now, for the same reasons.

Eg: Awak jangan cuba nak kelentong saya. ... will loosely mean "Don't try to con me"

usually malay phrases are conversed in such a way that it is opposite with english! don't believe me? (well this is directed to the foreigners who doesn't malay)

1)kari ayam-chicken curry( i'm confused with this for sometime before i began to accept it :laughing: )

Malay is very similar to the language Maori in New Zealand, for example....the numbers 2 and 5.
in Malay: Lima Maori: rima
Malay: dua Maori: rua

Hmmm, I seriously think before we teach anybody Malay, we should teach the Malay pronunciation first because Malay pronunciation is the easiest of any languages so far! If you know how to pronounce Malay by learning the vowel sounds, you can never go wrong with spellings and pronunciations anymore!

In standard Malay pronunciation, there are only 6 vowel sounds, which are

The rule of adjectives-after-nouns in Malay phrases is called Hukum DM; D stands for disifatkan and M stands for menyifatkan.

pop, I know what u mean about the direct translation thingie, when I went for Return of The King in the cinema, they put Lord of the Rings as "Ketua Perhimpunan Bulatan" or something like that.I wonder where they get all these bad transalations..Have u ppl seen some VCDs, whereby the Malay subtitles are much more interesting than the movie itself? Heh..

Oh and another mistake most foreigners make with the Malay language is the pronounciation of "c". Most Malay words with "c" are pronounced as the "soft c" as in "charmed" instead of the "hard c" as in "cringe"..
Try it..."cuti" (holiday)= chuti instead of kuti.

Maori is the native language of New Zealand....
Ofcourse, not many europeans or asians can speak this language down here....
Only the Maoris....and now days, some of the Maoris themselves can not speak their native dilect because of all the mixed marriges over here.
I think all of the native dilects in every country would sound simlilar....

All of the Romance languages are descended from the Latin language. They are called Romance languages because their parent tongue, Latin, was the language of the Romans. Because of their common source, the Romance languages have many similar features, both in grammar and vocabulary. The differences between them tend to be phonetical rather than structural or lexical.

I think...the Indonesian language is totally different from Bahasa Malaysia.Though some ppl might say that Bahasa Indonesia and Bahasa Malaysia are almost the same,but that's wrong.I remember once the RTM2 was showing this Indonesian series (forgotten its title)..and heck they didnt include the Malay subtitle so i was like :wacko: "What are these ppl saying???"I didnt understand a thing.

Actually, at least when I was still in secondary school, Malay Lit was only compulsory until Form 3, and only as part of the BM subject itself. And after that, it depends on what "stream" you're in. They have the science stream, the art stream, and the commerce stream. To those in the art stream, Malay Lit would be compulsory. And in the commerce stream, it was an elective. People in the science stream wouldn't have to have anything to do with it.

Stupid is an adjective and idiot is a noun, so they're not the same to begin with.

I've checked my English-Malay dictionary (thank goodness I still have it), and it defines an idiot as: "orang yang tumpul otaknya sehingga tidak dapat berfikir dan bertindak secara rasional; orang yang tolol."

So I guess there's no one word to say "idiot" in Malay. Maybe you can say "idiotic" then, and that's "tolol."

Shut up = Senyap? (that means silent)

Jo: They're not that hard to pronounce. Just read them they way they're written. Basically, the vowel pronunciation is like this:
a - "ah"
e - close to "uh" (rhymes with "duh")
i - "ee"
o - "oh"
u - "oo"

malay language hav many influences actually....arabic like khabar, portuguese like almari, sanskrit like derhaka, duka, etc, and that leads to tamil like katil...even chinese words like laici, chakoi (that kuih chakoi, i think u guys called it what...cha kwai? or sth? i dunno), this bcuz of the colonization by many empires throughout centuries...
and that word tipu/bohong or lying has many many slanga...like;
-kelentong
-melampit - it comes from the word Tok Selampit. Tok selampit are the old story tellers during the old times... so, we throw away the tok se- and use Lampit which means lying cuz it's like u know...'storytelling'
- Kencing - i know...it means peeing actually but many malay guys use this word to 'define' lying...

Now, when we wanted to say sth big like 'so beautiful' we would say 'cantik gila!'...which literally will be 'crazy beautiful!'..haha...
and dont go use word kahwin (married) to married couple in Indonesia cuz they use Bernikah (which malay people use that for that shaking hands and oath thingy we do when one would get maried), for them 'kahwin' means living together without marriage....

I remember there's supposed to be a difference in the usage of "ialah" and "adalah." Could somebody please explain it?

Also... I thought "sebuah" is used for houses and... erm... I don't know.... cars? I've forgotten how to use all those counters.

'sebuah' is used to mostly big things/ non-human, (and not soft things) . Like of course cars, house, computers, books etc. It's hard to explain also because it has the certain things where u use 'sebuah', and they've the lists of the things...it needed memorization. Example, even though book, u use 'sebuah buku', but for magazine, we use 'senaskhah'. same goes for clothe. If one piece of clothing, we said 'Sehelai' but if it's two piece we said 'Sepasang'.
About adalah and ialah. I dunno much but adalah must be followed by a noun, like "Pemenangnya adalah Vuns" (the winner is Vuns). I dunno how to explain 'ialah' but it's the opposite of that....
just like 'mengenai' and 'tentang' which means 'about' (eg: the book is 'about' me). Many ppl use 'mengenai' - 'Buku itu ditulis mengenai saya' but the right use is 'Buku itu ditulis tentang saya', since mengenai may be misunderstood with the verb 'hit' as in 'the ball hit me on the head' (Bola itu mengenai kepala saya).

People who suffer from dyslexia have been known to read/pronounce syllables in the wrong order. That could probably be the reason why he could pronounce the parts of the word, syllable by syllable, and still end up confused when he tried to pronounce the entire word.

Possibly, but not probably. Because... that's the ONLY word he was having problem with. And he did well in high school too. I don't know... Back then, nobody knew much about dyslexia. I mean, even now, there are a lot of learning disabilities that are recognized in the US but not in Asian countries.

A1 for Malaysian high school English is actually a piece of cake. It's nothing compared to O Level English. I'm not dissing the education system, but that's just a fact. I've done both and could do a comparison. Anyhow, languages are tons of fun.

1. Cantik Giler (n some kids used cantik gilores, cantik gila babeng <babeng is the short form of babi and kambing, used to be cantik gila babi, but babi is a kind of swear word so, the Scout kids try to make it sound decent>, cantik gila babas,.

3. Cantik yang sesungguhnyer (it may sound like a good bahasa melayu but actually its kinda slang)
4. Cantik nak mampos 5. Melampau cantik

Or now, the new fav. word is terlampau - used for saying... i dunno how to explain but example, for singers that have done sth wrong, like become prostitute or do porn, we call em 'Artis yang Terlampau' or in this case, the case of the steward who became a porn star of his own 'home-made' porn movie... they call it 'Kisah Pramugara Terlampau'... the tabloid uses that words too...

But it's good in terms of writing formal letter- which reminds me of my grandpa's colleague who was a police like him. He wrote a formal letter to his chief, and at the end of the letter, he wrote sth that ppl usually write to family..u know- like Sekian jua adanya, or Salam sayang jua adanya (old malay literature), but he wrote 'Tabik jua adanya' (how can I say it in english... -'Salutation' as it is-)....

When Anita Sarawak Sang "mereka kata 'lady driver' they say it's wrong to mix the language... and when Ruff Edge sang "Tipah tertipu, tipu tertipah", they say there's no such word as 'Tertipah' (though the lyrics are just being funny). But many complaint, and those songs are back in the charts...

There are always changes in committees in Malaysia, so I dun really know who have what and how... but, Malaysia always do such trivial things and make it as if it's a big thing.. when i was in primary school, there is this new word 'tohor' which means shallow or sth like dat. But in third edition or sth, i can't seem to find that word... so many changes... and some words that ppl thought exist, actually doesn't. Like the word Posesi that malay words which came from the word 'posession' actually does not exist...
I'm clueless about some words actually, but better use those that we only familiarize with... Some sasterawan like to create their own words..like Azizi Abdullah uses ''Ber-d'uh, berd'ah" to mention hesitation...but cuz they're sasterawan, DBP allow that...so, my point is...language is too complicated for words...eheh

FYI, you don't necessarily know that much Malay if you attended Chinese independent school. This is where people who don't know a lot of Malay could ask questions and the rest of us could answer them. And in case you haven't noticed, some of us are not physically in Malaysia. This is a good place to practice Malay so we don't forget the language. And then, there's a third group of "Malaysians" who're actually not born in Malaysia, but their parents were. They're still proud to be Malaysians though, so why should we deny them a chance to learn Malay?

Is this good enough explanation to you to justify the existence of this thread?!

talking about malay... i have been to indonesia for one week last month. and at there i was using malay to communicate. cant believe i am talking malay to chinese there. and my malay is somehow "improved". now its like RoJaK. Malaysia malay + indonesia malay. Scolding people goblok (maknanya bodoh dalam indonesia) to people... but i still dun get most ofthe indonesian language and i feel thato ur malay language is way much better to learn. in indonesia, there are like hundreds of diffrent languages! eheh...actually cuz my mom membantah sekeras2nya any swear words in our house (and it is kinda tak selesa if u can't swear when you are angry, it's not satisfying!) so, we create our own swear words that sounded err...less violent...
My mom used to use 'Bloodybostok' , the mix of Bloody Bastard and Vladivostok.
I like 'mangkuk ayun' better. my sister like 'stupid bumping'.

Peribahasa here;
"Kalau tak tahu menari, jangan salahkan lantai bengkang bengkok" means if u dunno how to do the thing that u were supposed to do, or you're failing at it, dun put the blame on others...

Isnt ciplak means 'cheap'?We used to use that a lot in primary school, especially during the conversation with Malay boys.When we brought something new to school, let say a new pencil box, those naughty Malay boys would say 'Ala...ini ciplak punyalah!' which means 'This is a cheap thing!' .

ciplak in its actual context means 'copy' but maybe today's youth replaced the meaning as 'cheap' in conversations.

I have only one understanding for the word kantoi, it means being caught in the act (of bad behaviour). Not sure how people use it these days either because my Malay sucks now.

Other words I usually use when I'm sarcastic are minta puji, menyampah, biar betul, ye ke??? Tenuk betul ngko ni (You're so stupid; tenuk is an animal know as tapir. It's the half black, half white animal found in Peninsular Malaysia. Forgot the English name :sweat: )... I think the best way to learn the slangs is to read local comic magazines like Ujang.

coolieteen, the best way to learn a language is by listening and reading. I suggest when you're in Malaysia try to pick up phrases when you observe conversations or watch the news on TV. Ask what they mean, repeat and try to use them every chance you get. If you can do this, you will be able to pick up around 100 most commonly used words in a week.

jakun & sakai are actually Malay words. It's the tribe names of Peninsular's aborigines (Orang Asli) in Pahang and used to tease people who are very much taken with their new surroundings. Best proverb to explain jakun & sakai is "Rusa masuk kampung".

I don't use these words anymore because it's kinda rude since Orang Asli is not as naive as they perceived to be. Sure, they still live in the forest and live a nomadic life but they're slowly keeping up with the country modernisation as well.

Oh i have one too..we used it a lot during primary and high school days--> "memalukan kaum mamalia". My science teacher loved to say that, when he was joking with us, or when he was pissed with us.I think he wanted to say "memalukan kaum manusia", but since he was a science teacher, he wanted to use words found in the subject.So he said "mamalia".Hehe, i was just guessing but i dont think he was the one who came up with this phrase.He wasnt that good!lol! :shifty: But it was becoz of him that i got to know this phrase. Gosh.. the word "mamalia" has a very big scope, it includes not just men, but cows, cats, dogs, goats and many many more as well! :laughing: So when people say that to you..i guess you know what they are trying to say! :whistle:

We used to use "ter" with everything, especially with non-Malay words, to mean that made a mistake with something, for example, "I ter-check the wrong answer!" It's so easy to use, you know. :tongue:

And I remember my math teacher in form 2. He was a little bit crazy. He was a tiny old man, but very fierce! Anyhow, he always wanted to say "celaka" to us, but of course he couldn't. So, instead, he always said "lakaci" (because he pronounced "celaka" as "cilaka").

I was just thinking... the Spring season is called "musim bunga" in Malay, right? If I remember correctly... Anyhow, we're having Spring Break next week. It's very similar to Malay, you know. It's kinda like British English and American English. Anyhow, I love learning different languages. I learned Spanish (second major) and Japanese (second minor) too after I came here. I also learned some Korean from my best friend and pick up bits and pieces of other languages from my students.

Actually, most Malaysians are already multilingual since a young age! I spoke Cantonese, Hakka, Mandarin, English, Malay, and some Indonesian (learned from our maids) when I was growing up. In the US, most people just speak English until they reach high school. And then they usually learn either French or Spanish.

But Chinese dialects are so different from one another that some linguists consider them different languages. I mean, just because you speak Mandarin doesn't mean you can even understand Cantonese. Sometimes, I think Spanish has more similarity to Italian, Portuguese, and French! I mean, I know Spanish, but I've never learned the other three, but when people speak those languages, I can understand maybe 75% of them, because they're so similar to Spanish. I can read them too.

Okay, let's get back to Malay. :rolleyes: When I was in school back in Malaysia, they kept changing the grammar and some spellings every year. Every year, we had to buy a new Kamus Dewan. Are they still doing that?

I didn't know that. I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, I want us to be proud of our own national language, but on the other hand, is it really practical? I mean, I had some problems with the different terms that they use in math class when I first came here. The math is generally easier, but I couldn't understand a lot of things simply because I didn't know what was supposed to be what!

Oh... I love literature. I actually learned sastera in secondary school until Form 3. And I took English Literature in O Level too.
