View Full Version : Anita Mui has passed away
Cantopop diva Anita Mui has lost her fight to cervical cancer. She passed away at around 3am this morning. She was 40 years old. The star, one of Hong Kong's most popular singers for over two decades had been hospitalised earlier on Monday. Many of her celebrity friends including Jackie Chan and Nicholas Tse had rushed to the hospital to see her. The singer held a series of concerts in November and had put on a brave public face, saying she would overcome her illness.
from RTHK.
This is so sad.... I never saw this coming.
When my mother told me... her eyes were all red ><
She should of rested instead of putting out so many concerts in Hk.
She will be very missed....

I really wasnt expecting this..i knew she had cancer but i didnt know it was so serious. I believed it when she said she would overcome it and come back and I admire her so much for holding the concerts for her fans, i suppose it was meant to be a sort of comfort for them, to encourage them to stay strong for her, in the end, she should have rested for herself.
Im not really a fan, but i acknowledge the fact that she was one of HKs most valued stars. I checked on rthk and her friends and family were by her side as her condition worsened and she slipped into a coma. It was her wish that people would not cry for her.

 Oh my gosh... I haven't been on this forum for ages- and now that i'm back, i see such sudden sad news.. -_-
In fact- i was listening to entertainment chinese news about Anita Mui yesterday. But i am very very shocked about this sudden news.
I think she's one of the greatest singers in history! To sing for sooo many years and to become so successful. She is indeed one celebrated singer that i'll never forget. -_-
May God bless her soul

I watched all those clips of her on the news recently saying that she was fine, etc. She also talked about how her friends told her to rest and whatnot. How unfortunate she passed away. My parents will be sad. I never really listened to her music, but I liked her. She was an individual, and had a real interesting sense of fashion.
We need more individualistic people in our society, especially in the celebrity circles. I'm sad for her family, and I will miss her.

such disheartening news. i as well didn't expect her to pass away, especially not so soon. i remember watching the news when she first addressed the press and public about her cancer. she seemed so strong. but now she can rest in peace and won't have to suffer. her older sister also passed away from the same thing earlier in 2000 as well.
Like I said in our Canadian thread, I never know who artists are by chinese name...so when my mom told me that she died, I was like oh well...dunno who she is, probably some old lady that no one knew about...but now, I go online and see her name...I had no idea it was her. Stupid me. Now I feel so bad for thinking like that. RIP Anita. You'll be missed.

I found this sad news caption thingy about her death
Year 2003 is a sad year for HK's show biz industry. There's 2 more days till the new year and celebrity Anita Mui has passed away at HK hospital at 2:50am this morning, at the age of 40. (She didn't even get to reach 2004!) Friend Jacky Chan said Anita passed away peacefully, she passed away wearing her prettiest clothes, wore the prettiest make up. Jst before she passed away, Anita told friends that tell fans not to cry for her, and don't call her name!!
Aww.. this article is so sad  Anita know's she is about to die and made herself look the prettiest.

I was shocked when my friend sent me a message on my mobile to say that Anita Mui passed away. I knew that she had cancer but didn't know it was so severe - one of my friends actually told me that her cancer/tumour was beneigh so I didn't expect her to die.
I was never a fan of hers, but I did like a few of her songs and movies and I honestly thought she was a great performer on stage!
Her death made me realize just how fragile life really is (pardon the cliche) and how quickly one's life can slip away.

oh my gosh, that's probably why Anita Mui was so intent on having that last series of concerts even though her friends told her not to. She knew she was going to die and she wanted to enjoy her last three months... and she died in her prettiest clothes and make up.... I hope she lived her life to the fullest. I really hope she did.
Miao, I can totally understand why your sister would feel that way. Like with Jay, Lee Hom, David Tao, etc... we sort of grow up with these people and our childhood memories are also wrapped around their lives as well... so when they pass away, a part of our childhood memories dies too since they were such a big part of it. We remember how much we thought about them and now that they've died it's like those memories kind of went away too. It's really sad. Can you imagine being like 50 years old and reading about *** or some childhood celebrity passing away?
Omg I don't even want to think about it!

yup.. its pretty sad news actually.. she even cancelled a recent appearnace for a charity foundation in singapore recently due to her appalling health condition..
must say its a pretty luckless year this year with the show industry losing leslie then Ke SHou Liang and now Anita..
as with Leslie's death i thibk the HK press sjould really leave the family members and firends alone although its their job.. pretty unethical to see the press going after anita's close pals like jackie chan, eric tsung and alan tam for interviews when it was apparent that they were pretty much in shock and entrenched in sadness from the looks on their faces..
i knew it only today too and this thread has already spawned five pages!! although most of us is not a fan, but we recognize her as an artist ritez? yeah she is no biggest star, we felt the shock for such a popular artist to pass away so suddenly!
i watched a program just now, people came to visit her were crying and all that, it made me sit down and watch too...it's always tragic whenever an artist die all of a sudden...

i'm just wondering.. anita's sister died of womb cancer while anita died of cervical cancer.. these are pretty much kinda part of the reproductive organs.. could it be hereditary? but it is truly a great loss to all of us now that she's gone.. at least she led a dynamic life and will be greatly missed and remembered by many. i think thats the best thing a person can ever earn in his or her lifetime, to continue living in the hearts of many.

yea, i think it may be hereditary... i read in the news that the doctors sort of suspected that the cancer is herditary or some sort. i think its pretty sad.i mean she's still got a long path ahead and there it just ended. but i think she's considered good alr, considerong the fact that there were so many friends to help her and stuff.

I just find this beautiful article in Time Asia :
January 12, 2003 / Vol. 163 No. 1
Farewell to Hong Kong's Sour Beauty
Never the fairest of songbirds, she brought a stoic sexuality to music and film
Anita Mui, 1963-2003
BY RICHARD CORLISS
They called her the Asian Madonna because, in the ultra-staid world of Hong Kong pop music, her boldness was not just a sensation but an affront. If Madonna was the Material Girl, Anita Mui Yim-fong was the Bad Girl. That was the title of her 1985 hit song (which was briefly banned from radio for its raunchy lyrics) and best-selling album. In concert, Mui was a strutting, scowling presence, exuding sexuality like a visual and aural musk. She didn't simply command the stage; she commandeered it. She set attendance records with concert series in 1987 and 1991, and her 40-plus albums sold more than 10 million copies.
Still, the Madonna analogy limps. For one thing, Mui really could sing. Her sultry alto voice wrapped itself like a python around Canto-pop ballads, giving them a power, precision and, often, a desperation that never begged for pity. She sang of a strong woman's isolation—above, apart, alone. She was not the Madonna of Chinese music, but its Garbo.
And Madonna didn't die at 40. Mui did, last week, of cervical cancer, in an exit as poignant as any of her songs or films.
Most Hong Kong thrushes are sweet vixens. Mui was different. Her large eyes, beaky nose and small, lurid gash of a mouth gave rise to another sobriquet: the Ugly Queen of Pop. That's a harsh way of saying that Mui was a throwback to chanteuse Bai Guang and other Shanghai "sour beauties" of the pre-Mao era. The sour beauty sang of love as a burden that made the sufferer superior. Mui was that survivor: battered but proud.
Her vocal authority and concert-stage charisma served Mui well when she made films. She lent coherence and gravity to such doomed characters as Fleur, the ghost lover of Leslie Cheung in Stanley Kwan's Rouge (for which she won the 1989 Hong Kong Film Award for best actress), and a Chinese spy in Eddie Fong's The Last Princess of Manchuria. In the latter, she played the real-life title character Kawashima Yoshiko, who spied for the Japanese during the occupation, and Mui was cold steel personified. She slapped men's faces, spat out her scorn at those who would use, abuse or condemn her. At the end, facing a death sentence, she remained defiant: a ghost asserting her haunting hauteur.
Mui lightened up in action films. In Shanghai Shanghai, she showed her dancing skill in a wild kung fu tango with Yuen Biao. She played the double role of a (male) emperor and his ancient (male) ancestor in Wu Yen. She graced three Jackie Chan films (playing his stepmom in Drunken Master II) and four with Stephen Chow. Her finest fantasy role was as Tung the Wonder Woman in The Heroic Trio and Executioners, in which she joins forces with Maggie Cheung and Michelle Yeoh to save the world. Even in this comic-book chaos, she has an iconic Mui moment: she hears that a child has died, and a teardrop falls from her eye to trickle down her super-heroine mask.
Mui was known as a tough cookie with even tougher pals. In 1992, a triad member who had slapped her was shot dead three days later. (No one was convicted of the crime, and Mui was not charged with complicity.) But she was famously generous, raising funds for a San Francisco nursing home and, last year, for the families of SARS victims.
In September, Mui announced that she had cervical cancer. (In 2000, her sister Ann, who had performed with her in a childhood act, died of ovarian cancer.) Flanked by a phalanx of stars, including Chan and Yeoh, she told her fans: "Please don't worry about me. Watch me win this war." She threw herself a lavish, tearful 40th birthday party and, ever defiant, prepared for a role in Zhang Yimou's next film, House of Flying Daggers. "I realized she w
ould never surrender to the devil of the disease," Zhang told Time. "To her, this film wasn't just a job but her ultimate struggle—to challenge her life, her destiny."
She also gave her last concerts. At the end of her final show on Nov. 15, Mui, who had never married, stood on stage in a white wedding dress and told 10,000 onlookers it was unlikely she would find a husband. Then she walked into the darkness. At her deathbed last week were a slew of Hong Kong royalty.
All had sweet, sad words for the occasion. But Mui provided her own elegy when she said, "I wonder how many people will remember me after I leave the business for good. My hope is that when they look at the stars in the sky, people will think of my name."

I was in HK when she passed away. I remember I was out until 1 am and as I was going home with my mom and brother in a taxi, the radios were all talking about how Anita was in the hospital. But we had only caught the news in the middle, and so I didn't know what the big fuss was about.
The next morning, I walk out of my room and my mom tells me that she passed away in the morning. About 2 hours after I heard the news on the radio last night.
As I went to a restaurant for breakfast, EVERYONE was holding the same newspaper reading the SAME article. It was amazing. You look around and everyone was reading the same thing. (because one particular newspaper in HK is popular, most people read that one)
For the next few days the newspapers wrote about her, there were special memorial books, shows, etc.
It is quite sad, I heard the jewelry she wore at her concert for the part with the wedding dress is jewelry she bought herself for marriage. (You know how in Chinese weddings, your parents prepare your "dowry" sort of and they give you jewelry too. Well she bought that herself)
I remember listening to a few of her songs when I was little, even though I really grew up listening to Faye. I had always thought that she had real class and style. She could be fashionable, without over doing it. Unlike other "older" singers/celebrities that do it to be "young". Anita Mui did it effortlessly.
When she left, she told her friends not to cry and to let her go in peace.
So I hope that no one here will cry because that was not what Anita wanted.
 i just finished watching star news on tv... and they were showing the ceremony for Anita, so many of her friends went, and most of them wore sunglasses to hide their red eyes because they didn't want anita to know they were crying.
The part that made me bawl was when they showed all her fans. The van covered in flowers where Anita was , was driving pass all the fans and you just see everybody bawling and waving goodbye to their idol.... oh gosh it was so sad. So many fans were crying their eyes out, and many of them sang Anita's songs.

I caught the news of the ceremonies and although im not a big fan of hers and i found out loads about her only after she passed away i was very moved by the scenes. Like miao, seeing her fans like they were made me weep. They, like Anita, were brave enough to keep their tears back, until right at the end.
I was also saddened by the sight of her students, screaming 'teacher' at the sea. I was upset to see Hocc, Andy and Edmond cry and the sight of Anita's mother being helped in and out of the car. Although it was Anita's wish that nobody would cry, they couldnt help it. She was a great person and will be greatly missed. Like her friends, family and fans, i hope the paparazzi will leave her alone and wont try to drag up the past.

jackie chan n her promised each other tat they will fight their cancer together ..... but now since Anita passed away... he's going solo... Anita wa great actress and singer... she suffered so much throughout her life... she was forced to become a singer wen she was 5 or 8 years old... her sis died at the age f 39 because of the same type of cancer Anita had... her best friend, Leslie Cheng (sorri if mispelled) jumped off a buliding a year or two ago... so many things happened to her... also, her cancer could have been cured if she had gotten treatments earlier but she didn't want her mom to know that she had cancer and she wanted to do concerts for her fans..... ANITA MUI WILL BE MISSED...RIP... :wink2:  :wink2:
